Mercury does not make money the way Jupiter or Saturn do, in a fortune or in a foundation. It makes money in pieces: the trade, the fee, the commission, the margin between buying and selling, the calculation nobody else made, the sentence somebody paid for, repeated until the pieces are a fortune nobody saw accumulate. It is the planet of the merchant, the broker, the accountant, the writer, the agent, the programmer and the middleman, and its wealth has two marks that the other planets’ do not: it comes in many small transactions rather than a few large ones, and it is hard to hold, because the same quickness that makes it scatters it. This article takes Mercury layer by layer, its lordship for each ascendant, its house, its sign, its condition, and it gives proper weight to the two states most charts carry and most readings skip, combustion and retrogression.

Mercury’s money: trade, fees, calculation and the word
Mercury gives money in four ways. Through trade: buying and selling, the margin, the shop and the market, the import and the wholesale, the broker’s commission. Through fees: the skill sold by the hour or the piece, the accountant, the consultant, the tutor, the professional whose income is a hundred invoices a year. Through calculation: the analyst, the actuary, the programmer, the person who saw the number before the market did. And through the word: the writer, the journalist, the copywriter, the publisher, the translator, the agent whose living is other people’s sentences. Its trades change with the technology and its nature does not: the Mercury native of one century kept ledgers and of the next writes code, and both made money in pieces from the mind. Mercury’s money arrives quickly, in its own periods and transits, and it arrives often, and the reading of it is always half about accumulation, since the pieces have to be gathered somewhere, and Mercury is not the planet that gathers.

Mercury is a money lord for three ascendants, Taurus through the second, Leo through both money houses, and Scorpio through the eleventh with the eighth attached; for Cancer and Libra it rules the twelfth and is the planet the money leaves through, on paper and in transit. Mercury in the second and eleventh
Mercury in the second gives the family’s money made in trade, savings that are counted and recounted, speech that is paid for, and the native who knows to the rupee what they have; it is the accountant’s and the merchant’s placement, and dignified it gives accumulation by calculation rather than by fortune. Its cost is Mercury’s restlessness, the savings moved between instruments so often that the moving costs more than the return. Mercury in the eleventh gives gains through trade, writing, the network of the clever and the many small sources rather than the one large one; it is the placement of the native with four incomes, none of them large, and it aspects the fifth from there, favouring calculated speculation. Sitting in either house, Mercury brings money regardless of what it rules, and when the native is Taurus, Leo or Scorpio the money lord occupies the money house, Mercury’s best wealth placement; the Leo version, one planet owning both money houses and sitting in one, has no equal in the zodiac.
Mercury house by house, for money only
In the lagna, Mercury gives the native who is paid for the mind, and when it stands there in Gemini or Virgo it forms the Bhadra yoga, read in the Bhadra yoga guide, the great-person yoga of intelligence and trade. In the third, money through writing, media, communication, agency and short travel, the natural house of Mercury’s pieces. Mercury by sign: Virgo to Pisces
Exalted in Virgo, which is also its own sign, Mercury’s calculation becomes precision and its trade becomes system, and an exalted Mercury on a money house or aspecting one gives wealth made by method, the native who built the process everyone else uses. In Gemini, its other sign, it delivers through breadth, the many trades and the many sources. In Leo, Taurus and Libra, the signs of the Sun and Venus which count Mercury a friend, it works comfortably, Taurus in particular being the sign in which Mercury’s pieces are kept. Debilitated in Pisces, Mercury’s calculation dissolves in Jupiter’s faith: the numbers are approximate, the paperwork is late, the trade is done on intuition, and the money stays small unless the debility is cancelled, by Jupiter in a kendra since Jupiter owns Pisces, by Mercury itself in a kendra since Virgo is its own exaltation sign, or by Venus in a kendra since Venus is exalted in Pisces; cancelled, it gives the Neecha Bhanga fortune of the native who earns from the mind by imagination rather than arithmetic, the writer and the designer rather than the accountant, and the contrast at the end of this page is one such chart. In the Moon’s Cancer, its enemy, Mercury’s money comes through the public and the home, with friction; in Mars’s, Jupiter’s and Saturn’s signs, its neutrals, through force, faith and the long game, none of which are Mercury’s own.
Mercury combust, and the Budhaditya yoga
Mercury is never more than about twenty-eight degrees from the Sun and is combust for a large share of its cycle, so that a combust Mercury is among the commonest conditions in any chart and the one most often read wrongly, in both directions. The Sun and Mercury together form the Budhaditya yoga, the combination of intelligence and authority that gives money through commerce, administration and calculation done with standing, read in the Budhaditya yoga guide; and the same conjunction, within the combust orb, burns Mercury’s independence, so that the trade is done in the Sun’s name, the fee is earned in an institution rather than a practice, and the money through the mind comes through position. Both are true at once, and the reading distinguishes them by distance and by dignity: Mercury within a few degrees of the Sun in Virgo, Gemini or the Sun’s Leo gives Budhaditya with its independence largely intact, the administrator who is also a trader; Mercury deep in combustion in Pisces or Cancer gives the clerk whose intelligence serves someone else’s authority. Combustion does not strip a money lord of its house; it redirects the channel from Mercury’s own trades to the Sun’s, and the reading says so instead of calling it a denial. Mercury retrograde
Mercury is retrograde three times a year for about three weeks each, which puts a retrograde Mercury in roughly one chart in five, and for money the reversal costs nothing. Retrograde, Mercury’s calculation turns inward and its trade is reconsidered: the native revises the numbers, checks the contract twice, and makes money by finding what the first reading missed, the auditor, the editor, the trader who profits from the error everyone else made. Retrograde Mercury in a good sign, standing at its closest to the earth, often gives the sharpest arithmetic in the chart, with the money coming late and after a correction; in Pisces it gives someone who revises the route to a modest fortune more than once. Transiting retrograde over the money houses, Mercury gives three weeks of re-read contracts, delayed payments and sales that collapse and revive, the stretch in which nothing should be signed, which a native born with Mercury retrograde tends to know without being told.
The seventeen-year period
Mercury’s major period is seventeen years, and for the three ascendants for which it is a money lord it is the trade of the life: for Leo, both money houses in one planet, the cleanest wealth period in the zodiac; for Taurus the second delivered through calculation; for Scorpio the eleventh delivered through trade with the eighth’s reversals attached. Mercury’s own way of spending: the scatter
Mercury spends on schemes, gadgets, subscriptions, courses, the clever purchase that was going to pay for itself, and the small thing bought often; and it does not so much spend as scatter, the money in twelve places and none of it counted. A Mercury leading the twelfth, for Cancer and Libra, gives the native whose money goes on paperwork, communication and the foreign and who cannot say where; a Mercury afflicting the second gives the savings moved so often between clever instruments that the moving is the expense. Mercury’s spending stops when it sees the total, which is the whole of its correction: the Mercury native shown their twelve subscriptions on one page cancels nine, and the one given a single account instead of six begins, for the first time, to accumulate. The weak Mercury, and what helps it
An incapacitated Mercury, debilitated with no cancellation, buried in combustion in a hostile sign, or crowded by Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, hurts the money three ways. Calculation goes, so that the native misjudges the margin, the interest and the tax, and the pieces that should have been a fortune are a scatter of small losses. The paperwork goes, so that the contract is not read, the filing is late, the clause is missed, and a weak Mercury with Rahu on a money house is the placement of the native who signed what they should not have. And the trade goes, so that the buying and selling that a strong Mercury does by instinct is done badly, and the native in Mercury’s professions works twice as hard as the colleague with Mercury in Virgo. The chart’s response is to borrow the calculation from outside: the accountant, the adviser who reads the paper, the single account, the rule that nothing is signed the day it is offered; and since the second and eleventh lords deliver on their own schedule however Mercury fares, a chart with a poor Mercury and good money lords ends up with money that somebody else has to count. A worked contrast: the trader and the writer
Two charts with particulars altered show the two faces. The first belongs to a Taurus lagna native with Mercury, lord of the second and fifth, exalted in Virgo in the fifth, with the Sun, lord of the fourth, in Virgo beside it a few degrees away: the money planet exalted in its own house of calculation, the Budhaditya formed with the independence intact, in a sign where Mercury’s pieces are kept. Venus, the lagna lord, is in Leo in the fourth. He is a commodities broker, Mercury’s trade done with the Sun’s standing, and his Mercury period, from his thirty-second year, was seventeen years of the pieces becoming a fortune: the margin on a thousand trades, the fee on a hundred clients, Mercury-Venus bringing the first property from savings and Mercury-Saturn the second, the two keeping sub-periods for a chart where Venus is the lagna lord and Saturn the yogakaraka. The money was never dramatic and is now considerable, which is the whole of Mercury’s way.
The second is a Cancer lagna native with Mercury, lord of the third and twelfth, debilitated in Pisces in the ninth, and Jupiter, lord of the sixth and ninth and owner of Pisces, exalted in Cancer in the lagna: a clean cancellation, the debility sign’s ruler exalted in a kendra. Mercury rules the third, the writer’s house, and the twelfth, the foreign, and sits debilitated in the ninth, fortune through the foreign and through learning. She writes, and the arithmetic of her Mercury is hopeless, the paperwork late and the accounts a mystery; the money came in Mercury’s period, from her twenty-ninth year, through a foreign publisher, the twelfth lord in the ninth delivering fortune abroad, in the imaginative form the cancelled debility describes, sentences rather than sums. Mercury-Jupiter, the exalted cancelling planet’s sub-period, was the year the second book sold in the country of the ninth house, and the money that a debilitated third-and-twelfth lord would have scattered was gathered by an agent, Mercury’s calculation borrowed from outside exactly as the weak-Mercury reading advises. The trader had the better Mercury and made money by arithmetic; the writer had the worse Mercury, cancelled, and made money by imagination; both made it in pieces, from the mind, in Mercury’s period, which is the sentence that applies to every Mercury fortune however it looks.
