The 2nd and 11th Houses Together: Keeping and Gaining

Most money readings look at the second house or at the eleventh, and the money lives in the relation between them. The second is what is kept: savings, the family’s wealth, the food on the table, the face and the speech. The eleventh is what is gained: income, returns, the network, the wish fulfilled. Counted from each other they explain each other. The second is the fourth house from the eleventh, the ground the gains stand on and the home they return to; the eleventh is the tenth house from the second, the career of the savings, the work that accumulated money does. A chart with a strong eleventh and a weak second earns and does not hold; a chart with a strong second and a weak eleventh holds and does not earn; and the charts that are called wealthy have the two in agreement, by the exchange of their lords, by each lord in the other’s house, or by dignified planets in both. This article reads the pair as one thing, which is how the texts read it under the name dhana and labha, and it ends with a five-minute reading that anyone with their chart open can do.

It belongs to the complete wealth astrology guide. The two lords are read placement by placement in the second lord in the twelve houses and the eleventh lord in the twelve houses, and their combination as a yoga in the Dhana yoga guide; this page is the axis itself, the geometry the lords and the yogas sit inside.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha, the houses counted from the lagna first and from the Moon second, the Sarvashtakavarga for capacity. The second and eleventh are read as a pair, with the twelfth between them as the outflow. Money is tendency and timing, never figures; nothing on this page is financial advice.

The two houses beyond money

The second house is dhana bhava, the house of accumulated wealth, and it is also the family the native was born into, the speech, the food, the face and the right eye, the values the family taught, and the things the native keeps because they were given. Money in the second is therefore money of a particular kind, held, familial, spoken about, eaten; a strong second gives the native who keeps and who is fed, and an afflicted second gives the family that quarrels about money and the speech that loses it. The eleventh house is labha bhava, the house of gain, and also friends, the elder sibling, aspirations, the network, the fulfilment of desires and the left ear; money in the eleventh is money of gain, arriving through people and through what the native reaches for, and a strong eleventh gives the native whose wishes are met and whose friends pay, while an afflicted eleventh gives the network that costs. The two are the most benefic pair of houses in the chart after the trines, and the classical rule that malefics do well in the eleventh, an upachaya, while benefics do well in the second, is the first thing a reading of the pair applies.

The geometry: the fourth from the eleventh, the tenth from the second

The second house is the fourth counted from the eleventh: the home of the gains, the ground they rest on, the security that income gives when it is kept. The eleventh is the tenth counted from the second: the profession of the savings, the work that accumulated money does when it is put to use, the returns on what is held. This is why the two must agree for a chart to be wealthy. Income without a second to rest in is the eleventh with no fourth, gains with no home; savings without an eleventh to work through is the second with no tenth, money with no career. The same geometry gives the twelfth its place, as the second from the eleventh, the expense of the gains, and the eighth its place as the tenth from the eleventh, the karma of what is gained, which is why sudden reversals of income are read from the eighth. A reading that holds this geometry in mind stops treating the two houses as separate columns in a table and reads them as one structure with an entrance and a foundation.

The exchange of lords: the Dhana Parivartana

When the second lord sits in the eleventh and the eleventh lord sits in the second, the two houses hold each other’s rulers and act as one, and the formation is the Dhana Parivartana, the strongest form of the wealth yoga because neither house can be read without the other. Each lord delivers both houses in its period, the gains are kept and the savings are worked, and the exchange is a Maha Parivartana in the classical scheme when both houses are benefic ones, which the second and eleventh are; a rare formation, since it requires the two lords to be exactly ten signs apart in the right direction, and in the charts that carry it the money is usually visible by the mid-thirties. Its weak form is the exchange in which one lord is debilitated in the other’s house, the debility cancelled by the exchange itself, which gives the same result late. Whether a given pair of lords can form it depends on the ascendant, since the two lords for Leo and Aquarius are one planet and cannot exchange; the lordships are in Wealth by Ascendant.

Each lord in the other’s house

Short of the exchange, each lord in the other’s house is the placement the money texts prize. The second lord in the eleventh puts the keeper in the house of gains: the family’s money at work, savings that earn, and income that arrives through what the native already has, the classic placement of the rentier and of the family business that grows; its period delivers the second through the eleventh, accumulation as gain. The eleventh lord in the second puts the gainer in the house of keeping: income that is saved, gains that become the family’s wealth, the native whose returns go straight into the reserve; its period delivers the eleventh through the second, gain as accumulation. Both are Dhana yoga by connection, since a lord in the other’s house connects the two, and both are stronger than the plain conjunction of the two lords elsewhere, because the connection happens in a money house. The twelve placements of each lord, including the ten that are not the other’s house, are on the two hub pages linked above and in the two summary pages, the second lord in twelve houses and the eleventh lord in twelve houses.

The nine planets in the second and in the eleventh

JupiterThe family’s wealth enlarged; judgment paid for; the well-fed houseGains of every kind; the wish fulfilled; among the most reliable income placements
VenusComfort kept; money through beauty and marriage; spends on pleasureGains through friends, the partner and Venus’s trades; income that comes easily
SaturnLean youth, durable reserve after forty; slow speech; the miser or the accumulatorLate gains that last; income through institutions and elders; Saturn’s good house
RahuMoney that arrives strangely; unconventional family; appetite in spendingGains at scale from unexpected sources; Rahu’s best money house; the surge to convert
KetuDetachment from savings; broke without distress; money let goGains unsought and unkept; the write-off without grief

Each cell is one paragraph of a full page: Jupiter in the second, the Moon in the second, the Sun in the eleventh, Mars in the eleventh, Saturn in the eleventh, Venus in the eleventh and Ketu in the eleventh are the ones most often asked about, and the pattern across the table is the classical one: the malefics, Sun, Mars, Saturn and Rahu, do better in the eleventh than in the second, and the benefics do well in both.

The twelfth house that sits between them

The twelfth house lies between the eleventh and the second in the order of the zodiac, and it is the outflow of both: the second from the eleventh, the expense of the gains, and the house through which what the eleventh brings must pass before the second can keep it. The bindu comparison that decides whether a chart saves is therefore the eleventh against the twelfth, and the comparison that decides whether it holds is the second against the twelfth, both read in Ashtakavarga for Wealth. The twelfth lord’s placement in either money house is the leak, treated in Money Problems in the Chart, and the planets in the twelfth are the drains through which the eleventh’s income does not reach the second. A reading of the axis that skips the twelfth has read the entrance and the foundation and forgotten the door between them through which the money leaves.

Which planets can aspect across the axis

The two houses are ten signs apart in one direction and four in the other, and only two planets can aspect across the gap. Saturn in the second throws its tenth aspect onto the eleventh, so that a Saturn on the house of keeping disciplines the house of gain, which is the placement of the native whose savings restrain their spending and whose gains are slow and kept. Mars in the eleventh throws its fourth aspect onto the second, so that a Mars on the house of gain protects and pushes the house of keeping, the placement of the native whose income is turned into property by force of will. No other planet reaches from one to the other: Jupiter’s aspects from the second fall on the sixth, eighth and tenth, and from the eleventh on the third, fifth and seventh, so a Jupiter on either money house protects other things and leaves the other money house to its own lord. A chart in which Saturn sits in the second and Mars in the eleventh has both money houses aspected by the other’s occupant, and it is a chart of money held hard, which is not a bad chart for money at all.

The signs on the axis

Because the two houses are nine signs apart counted forward from the second, they always fall in signs of the same modality and different elements: fixed with fixed, movable with movable, dual with dual. Fixed signs on the axis, Taurus and Aquarius for Aries lagna, Leo and Taurus for Cancer, Scorpio and Leo for Libra, Aquarius and Scorpio for Capricorn, give money that stays where it is put, slow to gain and slow to lose. Movable signs, Aries and Capricorn for Pisces, Cancer and Aries for Gemini, Libra and Cancer for Virgo, Capricorn and Libra for Sagittarius, give money that moves, earned quickly and spent quickly, the axis of the trader rather than the holder. Dual signs, Gemini and Pisces for Taurus, Virgo and Gemini for Leo, Sagittarius and Virgo for Scorpio, Pisces and Sagittarius for Aquarius, give money from two sources and money that is both kept and moved, the axis of the professional with a side business. The modality is a colour on the whole reading and it explains why a Capricorn native’s money and a Gemini native’s money feel different even when their lords are equally strong.

The same pair counted from the Moon

The second and eleventh from the Moon are the money houses as the native feels them, and a reading of the axis is done twice, from the lagna and from the Moon. A chart with weak money houses from the lagna and strong ones from the Moon gives the native who feels comfortable and is not, the emotional security outrunning the balance; the reverse gives the native who is wealthy and feels poor, which is commoner than it sounds and is the chart of the anxious rich. Transits over the money houses are read from both, and Jupiter over the second or eleventh from the Moon is as reliable a money year as the same transit from the lagna, which is treated in Wealth and Transits. The Jaimini tradition adds a third count, the arudha padas of the second and eleventh, the money as the world sees it, read in the Arudha lagna guide; the native whose arudhas of the money houses are strong looks wealthy, whether or not the lagna chart agrees, and the gap between the two is a reading in itself.

A five-minute reading of the axis

With the chart open, take the two lords for the lagna and write them down. Note where each sits: in its own house, in the other’s, in a kendra or trikona, or in the sixth, eighth or twelfth. Check their dignity, exalted to debilitated, and whether either is combust. Look for the connection between them, conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange, and if there is one, mark the Dhana yoga. List the planets in each house and read them off the table above, malefics welcome in the eleventh and benefics in both. Find the twelfth lord and see whether it touches either house. Compare the bindus of the eleventh, second and twelfth. Then do the whole thing once more from the Moon. The result fits on half a page and it is the wealth reading in its skeleton: two lords, their condition, their connection, their occupants, the leak, the capacity, and the emotional version of the same. Everything else in this cluster is flesh on that skeleton, and the timing, when the two lords’ periods fall, is in When Will I Become Rich?.

A worked chart: a Dhana Parivartana

A Virgo lagna chart, particulars altered. Venus, lord of the second and ninth, sits in Cancer in the eleventh; the Moon, lord of the eleventh, sits in Libra in the second: the two money lords in each other’s houses, the Dhana Parivartana, the second lord in Venus’s friend’s sign and the eleventh lord in the Moon’s neutral one, both unafflicted. Mercury, the lagna lord, is in Virgo in the lagna, exalted. The Sun, lord of the twelfth, is in Leo in the twelfth, its own sign, aspecting nothing on the axis. Saturn, lord of the fifth and sixth, is in Aquarius in the sixth, its own sign. Jupiter, lord of the fourth and seventh, is in Sagittarius in the fourth, its own sign, aspecting the eighth, tenth and twelfth. Mars, lord of the third and eighth, is in Capricorn in the fifth, exalted. Rahu is in Taurus in the ninth, Ketu in Scorpio in the third. The axis falls in Libra and Cancer, movable signs, money that moves.

The bindus, from Jagannatha Hora: the second thirty-three, the eleventh thirty-five, the twelfth twenty-four. The eleventh outscores the twelfth by eleven and the second outscores it by nine: a chart that saves and holds by the numbers, and the exchange says why. From the Moon in Libra the second is Scorpio, holding Ketu, and the eleventh is Leo, holding the Sun, so that the emotional version of the axis is quieter than the lagna’s, the native who is better off than she feels, which she confirms.

She is a physician with a practice of her own, the exalted Mercury in the lagna. Venus’s major period, the second and ninth lord’s in the eleventh, ran from her nineteenth year to her thirty-ninth, and it did what a second lord in the eleventh does: the family’s money at work, her education paid for from it, the practice set up from it in Venus-Saturn, the sixth lord’s sub-period in a sixth lord’s own house being the service that pays, and the income of the practice growing through Venus-Mercury, the exalted lagna lord’s year, which was also the year Jupiter transited Cancer, her eleventh, exalted. The Sun’s period, the twelfth lord’s, was six years in which the expense was purposeful, the Vimala formation of the twelfth lord in its own house, a foreign fellowship paid for and returned from. The Moon’s period, the eleventh lord’s in the second, is running now, from her forty-fifth year, and it is doing what an eleventh lord in the second does: the practice’s gains going into the reserve, two properties in Moon-Mars, the exalted eighth and third lord’s sub-period bringing property through a colleague’s estate, and Moon-Jupiter next, the fourth lord in its own house, which the reading has marked for the house she will keep. Two lords in each other’s houses, each delivering both houses in its period, movable signs moving the money into the reserve and back into the practice: the axis read as one thing, which is what it is.

Frequently asked questions

What is the relation between the 2nd house and the 11th house?

The second keeps and the eleventh gains, and each is the other’s support: the second is the fourth house counted from the eleventh, the ground the gains rest on, and the eleventh is the tenth counted from the second, the work the savings do. A chart is wealthy when the two agree, by the exchange of their lords, by each lord in the other’s house, or by dignified planets in both; a strong eleventh with a weak second earns and does not hold, and the reverse holds and does not earn.

What happens when the 2nd lord is in the 11th house?

The keeper sits in the house of gains: the family’s money at work, savings that earn, income that arrives through what the native already has, the placement of the rentier and the family business that grows. It is a Dhana yoga by connection, since the second lord in the eleventh connects the two money houses in a money house, and its period delivers accumulation as gain.

What happens when the 11th lord is in the 2nd house?

The gainer sits in the house of keeping: income that is saved, gains that become the family’s wealth, the native whose returns go straight into the reserve. It is a Dhana yoga by connection, stronger than the plain conjunction of the two lords elsewhere because the connection is made in a money house, and its period delivers gain as accumulation, often as property bought from income.

What is Dhana Parivartana yoga?

The exchange of the second and eleventh lords, each sitting in the other’s house, so that the two money houses hold each other’s rulers and act as one; each lord delivers both houses in its period, and it is the strongest form of the wealth yoga. It is rare, since it needs the two lords ten signs apart in the right direction, and impossible for Leo and Aquarius, whose two money houses have one lord; in the charts that carry it the money is usually visible by the mid-thirties.

Which planets are good in the 2nd and 11th houses?

Jupiter, Venus and Mercury do well in both, giving wealth enlarged, comfort kept and trade money in the second, and reliable gains in the eleventh. The malefics, the Sun, Mars, Saturn and Rahu, do better in the eleventh, an upachaya house, than in the second, where they give pride, impulse, leanness and strange money respectively; in the eleventh they give gains through position, initiative, institutions and the unexpected. Ketu detaches in either house.

Where does the 12th house fit between the 2nd and 11th?

The twelfth lies between them in the zodiac and is the outflow of both, the second house from the eleventh and the expense of the gains, so the eleventh’s income passes through the twelfth before the second can keep it. The bindu comparisons of the eleventh against the twelfth and the second against the twelfth decide whether a chart saves and holds, and the twelfth lord placed in either money house is the leak.

Should the 2nd and 11th houses be read from the Moon too?

Yes. From the lagna they are the money as it is, from the Moon the money as the native feels it, and the two readings often differ: weak money houses from the lagna with strong ones from the Moon gives the native who feels comfortable and is not, the reverse the wealthy native who feels poor. Transits over the money houses are read from both, and Jupiter over the second or eleventh from the Moon is as reliable a money year as the same transit from the lagna.
