Wealth and Transits: Jupiter Over the 2nd and 11th, Saturn Over the 2nd

Transits are the calendar on which a chart’s money arrives. The dasha says which years belong to which planet, and the transits say which months inside them; and of all the transits, Jupiter’s twelve years around the zodiac, a year to a sign, is the annual money cycle that every wealth reading is built on. Over the second house the savings grow, over the eleventh the gains, over the fifth and the ninth the fortune, over the twelfth the expense, and Saturn’s slower circuit, two and a half years to a sign, is the counterweight, building in some houses and squeezing in others. This article reads both cycles for money alone, gives the filter that decides whether a transit delivers or only promises, explains why the same transit pays in one year and not in another twelve years later, and shows how to build a money calendar for the next five years from the ephemeris.

It belongs to the complete wealth astrology guide. The transits that take, Saturn over the second and twelfth, the nodes over the money houses, are read as seasons in Financial Loss Periods; this page is the giving side and the mechanics that both sides share. The period the transit acts inside is in Which Mahadasha Brings Money?.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, transits read from the lagna and from the Moon, Ashtakavarga for the filter, Vimshottari dasha as the period the transit acts inside. The transit dates themselves come from the ephemeris and are not given here, because the reading holds for every cycle; the site’s monthly positions and the Jupiter transit pages carry the current dates. Money is tendency and timing, never figures, and nothing on this page is financial advice.

Transits as the calendar, dasha as the permission

A transit delivers what the running period permits and the chart promises, and nothing else. Jupiter over the second house in a second-lord sub-period, in a chart with a dignified second lord, is the year the money is kept; the same transit in a twelfth-lord sub-period is a year in which the savings are protected from a worse loss, which is real and quiet. The order of reading is therefore fixed: the promise from the natal chart, the permission from the dasha, and the date from the transit, and a transit reading given without the first two produces the annual prediction that Jupiter over the eleventh will bring gains to everyone born under a given sign, which is true of a twelfth of the population in the way that rain is true of a monsoon. This page reads the transits; the reader brings the chart and the period.

Jupiter’s twelve-year money cycle

Jupiter spends about a year in each sign and returns to the natal position every twelve years, so that a life has a Jupiter return at twelve, twenty-four, thirty-six, forty-eight and sixty, and the money cycle repeats between them: the gain houses at the second, fifth, ninth and eleventh, the growth houses at the lagna, seventh and tenth, the expense houses at the sixth, eighth and twelfth, and the mixed third and fourth. Within each twelve years there are, for most charts, two or three years in which Jupiter is over a money house and the period supports it, and those are the years in which the family remembers something being bought. The cycle is the reason wealth readings speak of twelve-year rhythms and the reason a native who bought a house at thirty-five is often asked about property again at forty-seven: the same Jupiter, over the same fourth, in a different period.

Each transit has its own page on this site, and the money column above is one paragraph of each: Jupiter’s transit through the second, the fifth, the ninth and the eleventh are the four to read first for money, and the twelfth is the one to read before it begins.

Saturn’s cycle: the building houses and the squeezing ones

Saturn takes about thirty years around the zodiac and two and a half years in each sign, so that a working life sees one full Saturn cycle and a native is in a Saturn transit of one kind or another always. For money Saturn builds in the upachayas, the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh, where its transits give slow, durable gain: Saturn over the third is effort that pays, over the sixth debt cleared and competition won, over the tenth the career’s hardest and most rewarded years, and over the eleventh, after a slow start, gains that last, which most readers have wrongly filed under the stall. It squeezes over the second, the twelfth, the eighth and, from the Moon, in the sade sati, and those are read as seasons in the loss-periods article. Saturn over the fourth fixes money in property and is often the transit under which the house is bought from necessity; over the fifth it restrains speculation, which is a gain in most charts. The rule with Saturn’s money is that it arrives at the end of the transit rather than the start, and that whatever is built under it is still standing ten years later.

The double filter: the transit’s own bindus and the house’s

A transit delivers in proportion to two numbers from the ashtakavarga. The first is the transiting planet’s own bindus in the sign it is crossing, from its Bhinnashtakavarga: for Jupiter four or more gives full delivery, three ordinary, two or fewer a promise without much behind it; for Saturn the reading reverses in feel, since Saturn with four or more bindus in a sign restructures and builds there and Saturn with two or fewer only takes. The second is the Sarvashtakavarga of the house, twenty-eight or more being the threshold at which a house has the capacity to receive what a transit brings and thirty-plus the houses where transits reliably pay. Jupiter with five bindus over an eleventh of thirty-three is a harvest year by the numbers; Jupiter with two over an eleventh of twenty-four is a year of expecting a harvest. The filter is what separates the transit reading from the newspaper column, and it takes five minutes in Jagannatha Hora; the money-house thresholds and the comparisons are in Ashtakavarga for Wealth, and the practitioner’s walkthrough of the tables is in the ashtakavarga transit method in Jagannatha Hora.

The transit counted from the Moon

The classical transit texts count from the Moon, and the money transits from the Moon are as reliable as those from the lagna, because money is felt through the Moon. Jupiter in the second, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh from the Moon are the classical gain positions, and Jupiter over the second or eleventh from the Moon in a money period is a year that pays whatever the lagna chart shows; Saturn in the third, sixth and eleventh from the Moon is the building position, and Saturn in the twelfth, first and second from the Moon is the sade sati. The two counts agree in most charts for most transits and disagree at the edges, and when they disagree the reading takes the one that the running period supports. A native whose Moon is in the fifth from the lagna has Jupiter over the eleventh from the Moon when it is over the third from the lagna, and reads that year as effort that pays rather than as the modest third-house year alone; the general reading of transits from both points is in the gochara guide.

Jupiter exalted, Jupiter debilitated, Jupiter retrograde

Jupiter’s own condition in transit changes what it brings. Exalted in Cancer, it delivers the house it crosses in full and adds fortune to the money houses it aspects, and a chart with a money house in Cancer, or in the signs Jupiter aspects from Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces, has its best money year of the twelve when Jupiter is there. Debilitated in Capricorn, it delivers the house it crosses weakly and its aspects protect less, so that a chart whose second or eleventh is Capricorn has a modest money year when Jupiter finally arrives and should not expect the harvest the newspapers promise; a Jupiter in Capricorn with cancellation, Saturn strong in the chart, does better. Retrograde, Jupiter delivers the house it is in twice, entering, retreating and re-entering, and the money of a retrograde year comes late and after a reversal, which is worth knowing in the months when it seems to have failed. In its own signs, Sagittarius and Pisces, it delivers reliably and generously, and a chart with a money house in either has a dependable year every twelve. The dignity in transit is the third filter after the period and the bindus, and it is the one that explains why the same eleventh-house transit is a great year for one native and an ordinary one for the neighbour born a week later with the Moon in a different sign.

The fast planets: the month of the payment

Inside a Jupiter year, the fast planets name the month. The Sun over the second or eleventh, a month each, is when salary and authority pay; Venus over the second, eleventh or the money planet is the month of the comfortable purchase and the money that arrives with ease; Mercury over the money houses is the month of the transaction, the fee, the sale; Mars over the eleventh is the month of the gain seized and over the second the month of the impulse spent. The Moon, two and a quarter days to a sign, names the week, and the day the Moon crosses the natal second or eleventh in a month when Venus or the Sun is there and Jupiter is over a money house, in a money sub-period, is as precise as transit timing gets. None of this matters without the Jupiter year and the period beneath it, which is why the fast planets are read last; but a native waiting for a payment inside a good year can be told the month, and usually the week.

The transit that does not fire

Every practitioner has watched Jupiter cross a native’s eleventh in a year that brought nothing, and the reasons are always among four. The period did not permit: the dasha and sub-period belonged to planets unconnected to money, and the transit had a date without a permission. The filter failed: Jupiter had two bindus in the sign, or the house had twenty-three, and the transit was a promise without capacity. The dignity was wrong: Jupiter was in Capricorn, or retrograde and not yet returned. Or the promise was never there: the chart’s money houses are weak and the transit enlarged what there was, which was little. A reading that has said “this transit will bring gains” and watched it not fire has usually skipped the period, and the honest correction is to go back to the dasha table and find the sub-period in which the same house transit, twelve years later or the Saturn transit sooner, will have the permission it lacked. The natal promise the transit enlarges is the subject of Wealth Yogas in the Kundli, and it is the first thing to reread when a transit disappoints.

Building a five-year money calendar

The calendar is built in five steps and fits on one page. List the sub-periods of the next five years from the dasha table and mark the ones belonging to the second, eleventh and money-planet lords as permitted years, and the twelfth, sixth and eighth lords’ as holding years. From the ephemeris, list Jupiter’s sign for each year and translate it into the house from the lagna and from the Moon, then do the same for Saturn’s two signs across the five years. Look up Jupiter’s bindus in each of those signs and the Sarvashtakavarga of each house, and strike out the transits that fail the filter. Where a permitted year, a money-house Jupiter transit and a passing filter coincide, mark the year; where a holding year coincides with Saturn over the second or twelfth, mark it the other way. Then add the fast planets for the marked years when they are close. The result is the money calendar, and it answers “when” better than any single method, because it is three methods laid on top of one another. The site’s transit pages carry the current Jupiter and Saturn positions, and the practitioner’s tool for the transits themselves is described in how to check transits in Jagannatha Hora.

A worked chart: the same transit, twelve years apart

A Taurus lagna chart, particulars altered, with the Moon in Virgo in the fifth. Mercury, lord of the second and fifth, is in Aquarius in the tenth with the Sun, lord of the fourth. Jupiter, lord of the eighth and eleventh, is in Pisces, its own sign, in the eleventh. Venus, the lagna lord, is in Capricorn in the ninth. Saturn, lord of the ninth and tenth and the yogakaraka, is in Libra in the sixth, exalted. Mars, lord of the seventh and twelfth, is in Aries, its own sign, in the twelfth. Rahu is in Gemini in the second, Ketu in Sagittarius in the eighth. The Sarvashtakavarga gives the eleventh house, Pisces, thirty-two bindus, and Jupiter’s own bindus in Pisces are five.

Jupiter crossed Pisces, his eleventh house, in his thirty-second year, in the Moon’s major period and Mars’s sub-period, the third lord and the twelfth lord, neither connected to the money houses. The transit passed the filter, thirty-two and five, and the natal Jupiter in its own sign in the eleventh was a fine promise, and the year brought a raise that did not change his life and a plan for a business that did not start; from the Moon in Virgo, Jupiter was over the seventh from the Moon, a partnership year, and the partner he found in it left within eighteen months. The transit had the promise and the filter and not the permission, and the reading he was given afterwards said so, and named the next crossing.

Twelve years later Jupiter crossed Pisces again, in his forty-fourth year, in Mars’s major period, Mars being the twelfth and seventh lord, and the Mercury sub-period, the second lord’s. The same house, the same thirty-two and five, and now the second lord’s sub-period underneath: the business that had not started in the first crossing was sold in the second, the eleventh lord in its own sign delivering the gains of a decade in one year, and the second lord’s year keeping them. Rahu in the second added Rahu’s kind of buyer, foreign and at a valuation nobody local would have paid, and Mars’s twelfth lordship as the major period sent a share of it abroad in the way the twelfth reads. Two crossings of one house by one planet, twelve years apart, one that brought a raise and a partner who left, one that brought the sale of a life’s work, and the difference between them was entirely in the sub-period, which is the sentence this whole page exists to say.

Frequently asked questions

Which transit gives money?

Jupiter’s transit over the second house for savings, the eleventh for gains, the fifth and ninth for fortune and the tenth for a raise, from the lagna or from the Moon, inside a sub-period of a money lord, and passing the double filter of Jupiter’s own bindus in the sign and the house’s Sarvashtakavarga. Saturn over the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh builds slowly and durably. Venus and the Sun over the money houses name the month inside the year.

Does Jupiter transit bring money?

It brings the kind of money the house it crosses holds, savings over the second, gains over the eleventh, property over the fourth, expense over the twelfth, and it brings it only when the running dasha permits and the ashtakavarga filter passes; Jupiter over the eleventh in a twelfth-lord sub-period with two bindus is a year of expecting gains. Exalted in Cancer it delivers in full, debilitated in Capricorn weakly, retrograde late and after a reversal.

Does Saturn transit give money?

Over the upachayas, the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh, Saturn’s transit builds slow and durable gain, effort that pays, debt cleared, the hardest and most rewarded career years, and gains that last after a slow start. Over the second, twelfth and eighth it squeezes, and from the Moon the sade sati is the long holding season. Saturn’s money arrives at the end of the transit rather than the start, and what is built under it is still standing ten years later.

What is the double filter for transits?

Two numbers from the ashtakavarga: the transiting planet’s own bindus in the sign it crosses, four or more for Jupiter to deliver in full, and the Sarvashtakavarga of the house, twenty-eight or more for the house to have the capacity to receive. Jupiter with five bindus over an eleventh of thirty-three is a harvest year by the numbers; Jupiter with two over an eleventh of twenty-four is a promise without much behind it. Both are read in Jagannatha Hora in a few minutes.

Should transits be counted from the lagna or the Moon?

Both. Money is felt through the Moon, and Jupiter in the second, fifth, seventh, ninth or eleventh from the Moon is as reliable a gain transit as the same houses from the lagna. The two counts agree in most charts and disagree at the edges, and when they disagree the reading takes the count that the running period supports. A transit that is a modest third-house year from the lagna and an eleventh-house year from the Moon is read as effort that pays.

Why did Jupiter over my 11th house not give gains?

One of four reasons: the dasha and sub-period belonged to planets unconnected to money, so the transit had a date without a permission; Jupiter had too few bindus in the sign or the house too few in total, so the promise had no capacity; Jupiter was debilitated in Capricorn or retrograde and not yet returned; or the chart’s money houses are weak and the transit enlarged what there was. The commonest is the first, and the correction is to find the sub-period in which the next crossing will have the permission.

How do I make a money calendar from transits?

Mark the next five years’ sub-periods as permitted or holding by their lords’ connection to the money houses; list Jupiter’s sign for each year and Saturn’s two signs, translated into houses from the lagna and the Moon; look up the bindus and strike out the transits that fail the filter; mark the years where a permitted sub-period, a money-house Jupiter transit and a passing filter coincide, and the other way where a holding sub-period meets Saturn over the second or twelfth; then add the fast planets for the marked years.
