In every chart a strong Jupiter is a blessing on the money houses. But what Jupiter actually delivers to a particular native is read in four layers, and the fourth is the one the reputation rests on: the two houses it rules for the ascendant, the house it occupies, its sign and dignity, and the three houses it aspects from wherever it sits. Why Jupiter is the dhanakaraka, and what that means in practice
Jupiter is the planet of increase, and increase is the one thing every kind of wealth needs. Its money is the money of trust: the adviser paid for judgment, the teacher, the banker, the person whose reputation brings the client to the door, the fortune that grows because the native is believed. It protects, so that what it aspects is not easily lost, and a Jupiter aspect on the second lord is the difference between a fortune that survives a bad period and one that does not. And it is the planet of the giver, which is why Jupiter’s wealth is usually accompanied by generosity and occasionally consumed by it. In practice the dhanakaraka works in three ways: as a general blessing on any money house it occupies or aspects, whatever it rules; as a money lord in its own right for the three ascendants whose second or eleventh it rules; and as the trigger, in transit over the money houses, of whatever the period permits. Three ascendants have Jupiter as a money lord, Scorpio, Aquarius and Taurus, and for them Jupiter’s condition is most of the wealth reading. For the other nine, Jupiter’s money is by nature and by occupation, and it is real, but it is not the planet the money belongs to, which is found in the ascendant table in Wealth by Ascendant.
Jupiter in the money houses: the second and eleventh
Jupiter in the second gives the family’s wealth enlarged, savings that grow, and a native whose speech and judgment are paid for; it is the classical placement of the comfortable house and the well-fed family, and with dignity it gives accumulation without much effort. Its cost is the second house’s appetite, since Jupiter enlarges the eating and the spending as well as the saving. Jupiter in the eleventh gives gains of every kind, the wish fulfilled, income through elders, institutions and the network, and it is among the most reliable single placements for a good income in the whole system; Jupiter here delivers in its own periods and in the periods of the eleventh lord, and its aspects from the eleventh fall on the third, fifth and seventh, so that effort, intelligence and partnership all benefit. In either house Jupiter is a money planet by occupation whatever it rules, and for a Scorpio or Aquarius native it is a money lord in a money house, the cleanest wealth placement Jupiter can have.
Jupiter in the fortune houses: the fifth and ninth
Jupiter in the fifth gives money through intelligence, through the profitable idea, through speculation that is judged rather than gambled, and through children who do well; from the fifth it aspects the ninth, eleventh and lagna, so that fortune, gains and the self are all under its protection, which is why the fifth is one of Jupiter’s best money placements despite the fifth not being a money house. Jupiter in the ninth, its natural house, gives fortune: money through the father, teachers, the foreign and luck, the fortune that arrives without being deserved, and from the ninth it aspects the lagna, third and fifth; it is the placement of the native who is helped, and whose wealth has a benefactor somewhere in its history. Both placements deliver in Jupiter’s periods and in the periods of the fifth and ninth lords, and both give the kind of wealth that the native attributes to luck and the chart attributes to Jupiter.
Jupiter in the kendras and the third
In the lagna, Jupiter gives the native who is trusted and paid for it, the adviser and the teacher, with its aspects on the fifth, seventh and ninth covering intelligence, partnership and fortune; it is the Hamsa yoga when in its own or exalted sign, read in the Hamsa yoga guide, and Hamsa is the great-person yoga that carries wealth through wisdom. In the fourth it gives property and the comfortable home, the large house and the vehicle, with aspects on the eighth, tenth and twelfth; in the seventh it gives money through the partner and the business partnership, aspecting the eleventh, lagna and third, which makes the seventh a better money placement for Jupiter than it looks. In the tenth it gives the career with money attached, the profitable position, the professions of judgment, aspecting the second, fourth and sixth, so that savings, property and service are all protected. In the third, Jupiter gives modest money through effort, siblings, writing and short travel, and aspects the seventh, ninth and eleventh, which is the third’s compensation: a Jupiter in the third protects the partnership, the fortune and the gains from a house that has little money of its own.
Jupiter in the sixth, eighth and twelfth
Jupiter in the sixth gives money through service, institutions, medicine and law, and debt that is manageable because Jupiter enlarges the capacity to carry it; it is the placement of the banker and the lender, and its aspects on the tenth, twelfth and second protect the career, temper the expense and guard the savings, so that the sixth is a better money house for Jupiter than for most planets. Jupiter in the eighth gives money through others, inheritance, insurance, the spouse’s wealth and the trust, the executor’s placement, and it aspects the twelfth, second and fourth, which is a fine set of aspects for keeping what the eighth brings; its cost is that Jupiter’s own periods bring the money through a death or a crisis. Jupiter in the twelfth is the giver’s placement, money spent on the foreign, on charity, on the hospital and the ashram, with its aspects on the fourth, sixth and eighth, and it gives the native who is never poor and never accumulates, which the reading should say plainly; in dignity it is the classical placement of the expense that is worth it, and abroad it often earns what at home it spends.
Jupiter by sign: Cancer to Capricorn
Exalted in Cancer, Jupiter delivers its house in full and its aspects protect strongly, and a Cancer Jupiter in any money house or aspecting one is among the best single wealth placements in the system. In its own signs, Sagittarius and Pisces, it delivers reliably and generously. In the signs of its friends, the Sun’s Leo, the Moon’s Cancer and Mars’s Aries and Scorpio, it works well; in the signs of its neutrals, Saturn’s Capricorn and Aquarius, less easily, and Capricorn is its debilitation. Debilitated in Capricorn, Jupiter’s abundance is constrained by Saturn’s economy: the money is real and small, the generosity is measured, the trust is harder to earn, and the cancellation, Saturn strong in a kendra or the Moon or Mars in a kendra from the lagna or Moon, turns it into the Neecha Bhanga fortune, the wealth that rises from a low start. In the signs of Mercury and Venus, Gemini, Virgo, Taurus and Libra, its enemies, Jupiter’s money comes through trade, calculation and comfort, planets whose values it does not share, and the native has to work at what a Cancer Jupiter is simply given. The sign is the third layer, and it modulates the first two rather than overriding them: an exalted Jupiter ruling the sixth and ninth for Cancer is still not a money lord, and a debilitated Jupiter ruling the second and eleventh for Aquarius is still the planet the money belongs to.
The protective aspect: Jupiter on the second and eleventh
Jupiter aspects the fifth, seventh and ninth houses from its own position, and the aspect on a money house is worth nearly as much as occupation. Jupiter in the sixth aspects the second; in the seventh, the eleventh; in the tenth, the second; in the third, the eleventh; in the fifth, the eleventh; in the eighth, the second. A chart with Jupiter aspecting both money houses at once, which happens from the fifth and seventh together only when there are two Jupiters, is rare, but a Jupiter aspecting one and occupying the other is common in wealthy charts. The aspect protects: a second lord under Jupiter’s aspect is not easily lost, a Rahu on the eleventh under Jupiter’s aspect keeps more of what it brings, and a Saturn on the second under Jupiter’s aspect gives the slow wealth without the fear. A wealth reading therefore draws Jupiter’s three aspects on the chart before it reads anything else, and a money house with none of them is a money house that has to protect itself.
Jupiter combust, and Jupiter retrograde
Combust, within the classical eleven degrees of the Sun, Jupiter’s judgment is burned by the Sun’s ego and its money comes through the Sun’s house and the Sun’s kind of authority; a combust Jupiter as money lord delivers late and through position rather than trust, and a combust Jupiter in a money house gives the wealth that is spent on standing. Retrograde, Jupiter’s money is reconsidered: the native revisits their fortune’s sources, the wealth comes after a reversal, and Jupiter’s periods bring money that was promised, withdrawn and then delivered, which the native experiences as a delay and the chart as a return. A retrograde Jupiter in dignity is not weakened for money and is often stronger, since the planet is closest to the earth when retrograde; a retrograde Jupiter in debility is the native who reconsiders their way to a small fortune, twice.
Jupiter’s own way of spending
Jupiter spends on generosity, on children, on teachers and the temple, on the pilgrimage and the wedding, and on optimism: the expansion started because it would surely work, the loan given because the borrower was surely honest. A Jupiter leading the twelfth, which it does for Aries and Capricorn, gives the native whose money goes on giving and on the foreign and who is rarely sorry; a Jupiter afflicting the second gives the over-expansion, the business grown faster than its capital because Jupiter enlarged the plan. The reading of Jupiter’s spending is the reading of an optimist, and its correction is not thrift, which Jupiter cannot manage, but the planning of the giving, so that the generosity is budgeted before Jupiter’s sub-period arrives and the expansion is sized to Saturn’s capital rather than Jupiter’s hope. The weak Jupiter, and what helps it
A weak Jupiter, debilitated without cancellation, combust, in an enemy’s sign in a dusthana, or afflicted by Saturn, Rahu and Mars together, does three things to money. It withdraws protection, so that the money houses are exposed to whatever afflicts them and losses that a strong Jupiter would have softened arrive in full. It weakens trust, so that the native is not believed, is not lent to, and is not the one whose reputation brings the client. And it distorts judgment, so that the native over-borrows, over-expands, or gives to the wrong people. The chart’s response to a weak Jupiter is the same as its diagnosis: the native builds the trust Jupiter did not give, through teachers and elders whose judgment they borrow, through the disciplined giving that Jupiter would have done naturally, and through the professions of Jupiter, teaching, advising, the law, medicine, finance, done with Saturn’s care. The periods of the second and eleventh lords still deliver, since a weak Jupiter is not a weak money lord unless it is one, and a native with a weak Jupiter and strong money lords has money without protection, which is a chart to read for insurance in the plain sense. A Cancer lagna native, particulars altered, with Jupiter exalted in the lagna, ruling the sixth and ninth, and the Sun as second lord in Virgo in the third with a debilitated Venus: the magnificent Jupiter gave him faith, two sons who became doctors, a reputation as the honest man of his town, and fortune of the ninth’s kind, help arriving whenever it was needed; the money was modest, because the second lord sat in the third with a weak eleventh lord beside it, and Jupiter, aspecting the fifth, seventh and ninth from the lagna, touched neither money house. An Aquarius lagna native, particulars altered, with Jupiter in Aquarius in the lagna, in a neutral sign, no yoga, no exaltation, ruling the second and eleventh: a plain Jupiter, and the planet the money belongs to, in a kendra, aspecting the fifth, seventh and ninth; his Jupiter period, from thirty-four, was sixteen years of steady accumulation through a trading business, nothing magnificent, and by fifty he owned three properties and the shop.
