Venus’s money: comfort, taste, partnership and the luxury trades

Venus gives money in four ways, and a Venus-led chart usually shows two of them. Through comfort and luxury, the industries that sell pleasure: hospitality, fashion, beauty, jewellery, perfume, interiors, vehicles, entertainment, the arts and everything that is bought because it feels good rather than because it is needed. Through taste: the native whose eye or ear the market shares, the designer, the buyer, the person who knows what will sell before it sells. Through partnership: the money that arrives with a marriage or a business partner, Venus being the significator of the spouse in a man’s chart and of partnership generally. And through ease: the Venus native is the one for whom money seems to arrive without strain, through goodwill, charm and being liked, which is a real economic asset and one the chart records. Venus is the fastest deliverer of money among the nine planets, and its money comes in its own periods and transits sooner and with less effort than Saturn’s or even Jupiter’s; its weakness is that the same planet spends, and the reading of Venus’s wealth is never complete without the reading of Venus’s expense.

Venus by lordship: its money role for all twelve ascendants

Venus is a money lord for four ascendants, Aries and Virgo through the second and Cancer and Sagittarius through the eleventh, and the yogakaraka for Capricorn and Aquarius, whose status wealth it carries; for Gemini and Scorpio it rules the twelfth and is the planet the money leaves through. Venus in the second and eleventh

Venus in the second is the placement most often found in charts whose money began at a wedding: the significator of comfort in the house of savings, giving wealth kept in beautiful things, a family that eats well, speech that charms and is paid for, and accumulation that arrives with ease. Its cost is that the second’s appetite is Venus’s own, and a Venus in the second afflicted by Rahu or Mars spends on the pleasures it saves for. Venus in the eleventh gives gains through the network, the friends and the partner, income from Venus’s trades, and the wish fulfilled through goodwill; it is among the easiest income placements in the system, and Venus here delivers in its own period and in the eleventh lord’s, aspecting the fifth from the eleventh so that intelligence and speculation are favoured too. In either house Venus carries money by occupation regardless of its lordship, and when an Aries, Virgo, Cancer or Sagittarius native has it there, the money lord sits in the money house, which is Venus’s cleanest wealth placement.

Venus in the other houses, read for money

In the eighth it gives the partner’s wealth, inheritance through a woman, and the money of the hidden pleasures. In the ninth, fortune through teachers, the foreign and luck, the wealth that arrives as a gift. In the tenth, the career in Venus’s professions, the profitable position in fashion, hospitality, entertainment or finance, and a reputation for taste that is paid for. And in the twelfth, the money spent on comfort, on the bed, the foreign and the pleasures of the private life; Venus in the twelfth in dignity is the textbook placement for expense that is enjoyed rather than regretted, and in a foreign country it tends to earn the money it would have spent at home.

Venus by sign: Pisces to Virgo

Exalted in Pisces, Venus’s comfort becomes abundance and its taste becomes art, and an exalted Venus in or aspecting a money house gives wealth that arrives through beauty and is enjoyed without guilt. In its own signs, Taurus and Libra, it delivers reliably: Taurus the accumulator of beautiful things, Libra the partner and the trader in taste. In the signs of its friends, Mercury’s Gemini and Virgo and Saturn’s Capricorn and Aquarius, it works well, Virgo being the exception as its debilitation. Debilitated in Virgo, Venus’s pleasure is subjected to Mercury’s calculation: the comfort is criticised, the taste is fussy, the money through beauty is hard-won, and the native often works in Venus’s trades from the analytical side, the accountant of the fashion house rather than its designer. When the debility is cancelled, by Mercury strong in a kendra, or by Jupiter in a kendra as lord of the exaltation sign, the result is the Neecha Bhanga: the fortune made in Venus’s field by the person who took it apart and understood it, which is the subject of the contrast below. In the signs of its enemies, the Sun’s Leo and the Moon’s Cancer, Venus’s money comes through status and the public, with some friction; in Mars’s Aries and Scorpio and Jupiter’s Sagittarius and Pisces, its neutrals and, in Pisces, its exaltation, through force, faith and abundance.

Venus combust: the placement most readers ignore

Venus is never more than about forty-seven degrees from the Sun and spends a good share of its cycle within the ten degrees that make it combust, so that a combust Venus is one of the commonest conditions in the whole chart and one of the least read. For money it matters. Combust, Venus’s ease is burned by the Sun’s ego: the money through charm becomes money through status, the comfort is bought for display, the partnership is dominated by one side, and a combust Venus as money lord delivers its house through the Sun’s channels, salary, authority and the father, rather than its own. A combust Venus in the second is the savings spent on standing; in the eleventh, the gains through position rather than goodwill; in the seventh, the wealth through the partner reduced to the partner’s status. The reading is not a denial, since a combust money lord still rules its house, but it is a change of channel, and the native who expects Venus’s ease and receives the Sun’s effort has been read wrongly. Venus retrograde

Retrograde, which it is for about six weeks in every nineteen months, Venus’s values are reconsidered: the native revisits what they find beautiful and what they will pay for, and a retrograde Venus in the natal chart gives the taste that is unconventional and the money that comes from it late, after the market catches up. For wealth a retrograde Venus in dignity loses nothing and often gains, since retrograde Venus is at its nearest to the earth and its brightest, and its money comes through the unusual product, the revived fashion, the thing that was out of style and is in it again. A retrograde Venus in debility gives a native who arrives at a modest fortune in Venus’s trades by revising the route more than once. In transit, Venus retrograde over the money houses is the six weeks in which the purchase is reconsidered and the sale falls through and returns, and it is the classical stretch in which not to buy the beautiful thing.

The twenty-year period

Venus’s major period is the longest in the Vimshottari system, twenty years, and for the four ascendants for which Venus is a money lord and the two for which it is yogakaraka, it is the wealth of the life, read in the Venus mahadasha. For the others it gives comfort by nature, marriage in most charts, and money through whatever money house Venus occupies or aspects; for Gemini and Scorpio, whose twelfth it rules, it is the two decades in which comfort is bought and paid for. Because most natives marry in a Venus period or sub-period, its money often arrives through the partnership, read in Wealth Through Marriage, and because it is long, its nine sub-periods are a complete money cycle in themselves, the Venus-Jupiter and Venus-Saturn years being the ones in which a Venus native’s money is kept, and the Venus-Rahu and Venus-Ketu years the ones in which it surges and is released. Venus’s own way of spending

Venus spends on comfort, appearance, pleasure and the partner, and it spends with a good conscience, since what it buys is enjoyed. A Venus leading the twelfth, for Gemini and Scorpio, gives the native whose money goes on the beautiful and the foreign and who does not regret it; a Venus afflicting the second gives the savings spent on the same pleasures they were saved for, the Rahu-Venus native buying more and the Mars-Venus native buying on impulse. The reading’s correction is not thrift, which Venus resents, but the buying of the comfort once and keeping it: the home that already pleases spends less than the one that is always being improved, and a Venus native with a settled comfort saves without feeling deprived. The weak Venus, and what helps it

When Venus is weak, whether debilitated with no cancellation, combust in a hostile sign, or hemmed in by Saturn, Rahu and Mars at once, the money suffers in three ways. Ease goes first, so that money that other charts receive through goodwill has to be earned through effort, and the native is not the one the client chooses on sight. It withdraws enjoyment, so that the money that comes is not felt, and the native with a weak Venus and a strong second lord is the wealthy person who cannot spend on themselves, which is its own kind of poverty. And it disturbs the partnership channel, so that the money through marriage and business partnership, which Venus carries, arrives with friction or not at all. The chart’s response is to build in Venus’s field what Venus did not supply: the taste learned rather than given, the comfort bought deliberately rather than by instinct, the partnership chosen with Saturn’s care. The lords of the second and eleventh go on delivering in their own periods regardless, so a native with a poor Venus and good money lords ends up with money and no pleasure in it, which the reading should name so that the enjoyment can be arranged. A worked contrast: the debilitated Venus that made a fortune

Two charts, particulars altered. The first is a Virgo lagna native with Venus, lord of the second and ninth, debilitated in Virgo in the lagna, with Mercury, the lagna lord, in Virgo beside it, in its own sign and exaltation, in a kendra. The money planet debilitated in the ascendant, and the cancellation exact: the lord of the debilitation sign, exalted, in the same kendra. She trained as a chemist and went into the fragrance trade from the analytical side, Venus’s field taken apart by Mercury’s method, and in Venus’s major period, from her twenty-sixth year, built a company that formulates for the houses whose names are on the bottles. The fortune is Venus’s, through beauty and pleasure, and it was made by the debilitated Venus in the way the Neecha Bhanga describes, from a low start and through understanding what others only enjoyed. The second lord’s period delivered the second house, cancellation and all, and the exalted Mercury beside it kept the money, which a debilitated Venus alone would not have done.

The second is an Aries lagna native with Venus, lord of the second and seventh, exalted in Pisces in the twelfth, and Mars, the lagna lord, in Aries in the lagna. The money planet exalted, in the house of expense. Venus’s period, from his thirtieth year, brought the comfortable years of his life: a marriage into a family of means, a house abroad, the seventh lord delivering the partner’s wealth and the twelfth delivering it abroad, and twenty years in which the exalted second lord spent the second house on the twelfth house’s pleasures, travel, the foreign home, the giving, the bed. He is not poor, and he has never accumulated, and the exalted Venus in the twelfth is exactly why: Venus delivered its house, in full, in the house where delivery means expense, and the reading he was given at forty said so and told him which of the two houses he was living in. The first chart has the worse Venus and the fortune; the second has the better Venus and the comfort; and the difference is the house, which is the second layer, and the reason this page reads the layers in order.
