A wealth reading can be done from the lords and the yogas alone, and most are. The ashtakavarga is what turns it from tendency into numbers. Every house in the chart carries a count of bindus, and the money houses’ counts say what their lords only imply: whether the second can hold, whether the eleventh can gain, whether the twelfth takes more than the eleventh brings, and which of the next twelve Jupiter years will actually pay. This article reads the ashtakavarga for money only. It takes the construction of the tables as known, since that is set out elsewhere on this site, and it spends its length on the three houses, the three comparisons among them, the money planets’ own maps, the transit filter, one classical timing refinement with its limits, and a checklist that anyone with Jagannatha Hora open can run in five minutes.
It belongs to the complete wealth astrology guide. How the seven maps are built, the fixed totals each planet distributes, the 337-bindu sum and the average of about twenty-eight a sign, and the kakshya refinement are all explained in the ashtakavarga article of the career cluster, which reads the tenth house; this page reads the second, eleventh and twelfth by the same method. The practitioner’s walkthrough of the tables against a Saturn transit is in the ashtakavarga transit method in Jagannatha Hora.
Conventions used. Parashari ashtakavarga as Jagannatha Hora computes it, seven planets and the lagna as contributors, bhinnashtakavarga for each planet and sarvashtakavarga as the sum, unreduced tables for the house and transit readings, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa. The bindus measure capacity; the dasha supplies permission and the transit the date, and the numbers on this page never replace either. Money is tendency and timing, never figures, and nothing here is financial advice.

What the numbers add to the lords
The lords of the second and eleventh say through which planets money comes and, by their dignity and placement, how easily; the yogas say whether the two houses are joined; the dasha says when. None of them says how much a house can carry, and two charts with identical lords and yogas deliver very differently because one has a second house of thirty-four bindus and the other a second of twenty-two. The ashtakavarga is the measure of that capacity, house by house, and for money it does three things the lords cannot. It ranks the three money houses against each other, which decides the balance between earning, spending and keeping. It weights each transit, so that Jupiter over the eleventh is read as a harvest year in one chart and a hopeful one in another. And it corrects the reading of a good dasha, since a money lord’s period delivers in proportion to that lord’s own bindus in the sign it occupies, which is why some Venus periods in Venus-money charts disappoint. The numbers are read after the lords and never instead of them; a second house of thirty-five bindus with a second lord debilitated in the eighth is a strong container with a weak supply, and both halves of that sentence are true.
The second house in sarvashtakavarga: the container
The second house’s total is the size of the container. Thirty or more bindus in the second gives the chart that can hold wealth, whatever its lord’s condition, and the classical texts take thirty in the second as one of the plain marks of a wealthy chart; twenty-eight to twenty-nine is the average container, enough for a comfortable life and no more; twenty-five or fewer is the second house that leaks whatever the eleventh brings, and a chart with such a second and a strong eleventh is the good earner with nothing to show, read in Why Can’t I Save Money?. The count is read with the second lord’s placement: a low second with a dignified lord gives money kept elsewhere, in property or abroad, since the lord can deliver and the house cannot hold; a high second with an afflicted lord gives the family reserve that the native cannot add to. The second’s count is also the count that decides whether a windfall stays, which is why the reading of sudden money in this cluster ends at the second house every time.
The eleventh house: the ceiling on gains
The eleventh’s total is the ceiling on gains, the most any period or transit can bring in through the house of income. Thirty or more in the eleventh is the mark of the chart whose gains are substantial and whose wishes tend to be met; thirty-three and above is found disproportionately in the charts of the self-made, since the eleventh is also the house of the network and the upachaya where malefics deliver; twenty-eight is ordinary; twenty-four or fewer gives gains that arrive with effort and stay small, and a chart with such an eleventh does better by the second lord’s slow accumulation than by chasing income. The eleventh’s count is the number a reading checks before it promises anything in an eleventh-lord period, because an eleventh lord exalted over an eleventh of twenty-three delivers an exalted planet’s version of a small house, and the native who was promised a fortune from the exaltation feels cheated by a reading that was, in its terms, right.
The twelfth house: the outflow, and why a low count is good
The twelfth is the one house in the money reading whose count is better low. Its bindus are the capacity for expense, loss and outflow, and a twelfth of thirty or more is the chart that spends at scale, gives at scale, or lives abroad at scale, all of which are the twelfth’s business; a twelfth of twenty-five or fewer is the chart whose outflow is contained, and it is this low count, more than any high one, that produces the quiet accumulator. The twelfth is read against the eleventh, since it is the second house counted from the eleventh and so the expense of the gains, and against the second, since it lies beside it and drains it. A high twelfth is not a misfortune when the twelfth lord is dignified in the twelfth, the Vimala formation, which gives purposeful expense and often the foreign earning; it is a misfortune when the twelfth lord sits on the second or eleventh with a high twelfth behind it, the leak treated in Money Problems in the Chart, because then the outflow has both the capacity and the door.
The three comparisons: earning, saving, keeping
The classical rule for a comfortable life compares the eleventh, tenth, twelfth and first, and for money the three pairs that matter are these. The eleventh against the tenth is the earning ratio: an eleventh higher than the tenth gives gains greater than the effort, the native who earns more than they work for, and the reverse gives the hard worker with modest returns; the career cluster reads the same comparison from the tenth’s side. The eleventh against the twelfth is the saving ratio: an eleventh higher than the twelfth gains more than it spends and accumulates by nature; a twelfth higher than the eleventh spends more than it gains, and the native’s account stays empty whatever the income. And the second against the twelfth is the keeping ratio: a second higher than the twelfth holds what the eleventh brings; a twelfth higher than the second leaks it. The three read together give the chart’s money character in one line. Eleventh thirty-four, twelfth twenty-six, second thirty-one is the accumulator; eleventh twenty-eight, twelfth thirty-three, second twenty-seven is the spender by the numbers; eleventh thirty-five, tenth twenty-six is the native who was always lucky in a way colleagues resented. The comparisons are the fastest reliable wealth reading in the whole system, and they take one minute in Jagannatha Hora.
The money lords’ and the money planet’s own bindus
Each planet’s own map, its bhinnashtakavarga, says how much of its promise it can deliver from the sign it occupies, and for money three maps are read. The second lord’s bindus in the sign it sits in: five or more and the second lord’s period delivers accumulation in full, four ordinary, three or fewer a period that keeps less than the lordship promised. The eleventh lord’s bindus in its sign, read the same way for gains. And the money planet’s bindus, when a third planet carries the money by occupation, Venus in the eleventh or Rahu’s dispositor, in the sign it occupies. This is the reading that explains the disappointing money period: a Venus that rules the second, sits exalted in the eleventh, and has two bindus in Pisces on its own map delivers an exalted planet’s promise through a thin channel, and its twenty years are comfortable rather than wealthy. The maps also refine the yogas: a Dhana yoga formed by two lords each with four or more bindus in their signs is a yoga with capacity, and the same formation with two and three bindus is the formation on paper that Wealth Yogas in the Kundli warns about.
Jupiter’s bindus in the money signs: the transit filter
Jupiter’s map is the transit filter for money, because Jupiter’s transit over the second and eleventh is the money calendar and Jupiter delivers in each sign in proportion to its own bindus there. Four or more of Jupiter’s bindus in the sign on the second house means that the year Jupiter crosses the second is a year of accumulation in full; five or six makes it the best money year of the twelve; three is ordinary; two or fewer is a year of expecting, whatever the sarvashtakavarga of the house. The same reading applies to the sign on the eleventh, and to the signs on the fifth and ninth for the fortune years. A native’s twelve-year money calendar is therefore read from two rows of Jupiter’s map, the second and eleventh signs, and the years in which those transits fall inside a money lord’s sub-period are the years to mark. The filter has a second half, the house’s sarvashtakavarga, twenty-eight or more for the house to receive what the transit brings, and the two together are the double filter set out in Wealth and Transits. The commonest reason a Jupiter money transit fails, after the missing dasha permission, is Jupiter’s own count of two in the sign, and the reader who looks it up in advance is spared the disappointment.
Saturn’s bindus over the money houses: squeeze or restructuring
Saturn’s map is read the other way round. Saturn over the second is the squeeze, two and a half years of higher expense and flat income, and Saturn’s own bindus in the sign decide whether the squeeze restructures or only takes: four or more and the native comes out of it with the debt cleared and the land bought cheaply, the restructuring that reads as loss in the year and gain in the decade; two or fewer and it is the plain squeeze, the years to hold and nothing more. Over the eleventh, four or more of Saturn’s bindus gives the stall that ends in durable gains, the upachaya reading, and two or fewer the stall that is only a stall. Over the twelfth, a low Saturn count is the drain, and a high one the settling of obligations. The Saturn filter is what allows the loss-periods reading in Financial Loss Periods to be given with a grade rather than a warning: the same Saturn transit over the second is marked lightly in a chart where Saturn has five bindus in that sign and heavily where it has one.
A classical timing refinement, and its limits
The texts offer a finer timing method from the reduced tables: the sodhya pinda of a planet, the figure left after the trikona and ekadhipatya reductions, multiplied by the bindus in a house and divided by twenty-seven or twelve, gives a nakshatra or a sign, and the transit of Jupiter or Saturn over it is said to bring the house’s results, gains from the eleventh’s figure and expense from the twelfth’s. It is worth knowing, because it is the classical answer to “which month”, and the reading here uses it only as a confirmation, never as a primary method, for two reasons. The reductions themselves are computed differently by different schools and software, so that the same chart gives different pindas in different hands; and the method has no dasha layer, so that it names a transit without asking whether the period permits it. Where a pinda transit coincides with a Jupiter year that passes the double filter inside a money lord’s sub-period, it sharpens the month; where it stands alone, it is a curiosity. The unreduced tables are the ones this cluster reads, and the reader who wants the reductions can compute them in Jagannatha Hora and treat the result with the caution described.
The nine-line checklist
| Measure | Threshold | Reads as |
|---|---|---|
| Sarvashtakavarga of the 2nd | 30 or more | A container that can hold wealth; 25 or fewer leaks |
| Sarvashtakavarga of the 11th | 30 or more | Substantial gains and wishes met; 24 or fewer, small gains with effort |
| Sarvashtakavarga of the 12th | 25 or fewer | Contained outflow; 30 or more, expense at scale |
| 11th against 12th | 11th higher | Saves by nature; 12th higher, spends by nature |
| 2nd against 12th | 2nd higher | Keeps what the 11th brings; 12th higher, leaks it |
| 11th against 10th | 11th higher | Earns more than the effort; 10th higher, works hard for modest returns |
| 2nd and 11th lords’ own bindus in their signs | 4 or more each | Money periods deliver in full; 3 or fewer, periods keep less than promised |
| Jupiter’s own bindus in the 2nd and 11th signs | 4 or more | Jupiter’s transit years over those houses pay; 2 or fewer, hopeful years |
| Saturn’s own bindus in the 2nd sign | 4 or more | Saturn’s transit over the 2nd restructures; 2 or fewer, the plain squeeze |
In Jagannatha Hora the sarvashtakavarga row gives the first six lines and the bhinnashtakavarga tables of the two lords, Jupiter and Saturn give the last three. Nine numbers, five minutes, and the reading of the lords and yogas has its capacity attached.
A worked chart with the figures
A Scorpio lagna chart, particulars altered, so that the second is Sagittarius, the eleventh Virgo, the twelfth Libra and the tenth Leo. Jupiter, lord of the second and fifth, sits in Cancer in the ninth, exalted. Mercury, lord of the eighth and eleventh, sits in Virgo in the eleventh, exalted and in its own sign. Venus, lord of the seventh and twelfth, sits in Libra in the twelfth, its own sign, the Vimala formation. Mars, the lagna lord, is in Scorpio in the lagna. The Sun, lord of the tenth, is in Leo in the tenth. Saturn, lord of the third and fourth, is in Capricorn in the third. The Moon, lord of the ninth, is in Taurus in the seventh. Rahu is in Aquarius in the fourth, Ketu in Leo in the tenth with the Sun.
The figures, from his chart in Jagannatha Hora. Sarvashtakavarga: second house, Sagittarius, thirty-one; eleventh, Virgo, thirty-four; twelfth, Libra, twenty-three; tenth, Leo, twenty-nine. The comparisons: eleventh over twelfth by eleven, second over twelfth by eight, eleventh over tenth by five. An accumulator by the numbers, earning a little more than he works for, and the lords agree, both money lords exalted, the eleventh lord in its own house. The planets’ own maps: Jupiter’s bindus in Cancer, where it sits, six, so its period as second lord delivers in full; Mercury’s bindus in Virgo, five, so the eleventh lord’s period delivers gains in full. Jupiter’s bindus in Sagittarius, the second sign, six, and in Virgo, the eleventh sign, four: Jupiter’s transit over his second is the best money year of every twelve and its transit over his eleventh a good one. Saturn’s bindus in Sagittarius, two: Saturn’s transit over his second is the plain squeeze, not a restructuring. Venus’s bindus in Libra, five, so the twelfth lord in its own sign spends purposefully from a house of only twenty-three, the contained and deliberate expense.
He is an engineer who became a contractor, and the reading given at thirty-six had three sentences from the numbers. Jupiter’s transit over Sagittarius, in his thirty-eighth year, falling in the Jupiter-Mercury sub-period, the two exalted money lords, would be the year to mark, and it was: the firm’s largest contract, the profits kept, six and thirty-one behind them, and a plot bought outright. Saturn’s transit over Sagittarius, two and a half years later, would be a squeeze to hold through and not a restructuring, two bindus, and it was: a client who paid late, a year of flat income, nothing lost that the second house of thirty-one could not absorb, and no land bought cheaply because Saturn’s count did not give it. And the twelfth, twenty-three with a dignified Venus in it, meant that the expense of those years went where it was sent, on his daughter’s education abroad in the twelfth’s way, and not into the leak that a Venus on the second would have made of the same money. Three sentences, three numbers each, all three borne out, and the lords alone would have given the first sentence and neither of the others.
Frequently asked questions
How many bindus in the 2nd house give wealth?
Thirty or more bindus in the second house in the sarvashtakavarga gives a container that can hold wealth, and the classical texts take thirty in the second as one of the plain marks of a wealthy chart. Twenty-eight to twenty-nine is the average, a comfortable life and no more; twenty-five or fewer is a second house that leaks whatever the eleventh brings. The count is read with the second lord’s placement, since a strong container with a weak supply and a weak container with a strong supply are different charts.
How many bindus in the 11th house are good?
Thirty or more in the eleventh gives substantial gains and wishes that tend to be met, and thirty-three and above is found disproportionately in the charts of the self-made. Twenty-eight is ordinary; twenty-four or fewer gives gains that arrive with effort and stay small, whatever the eleventh lord’s dignity, since an exalted lord over a small house delivers an exalted planet’s version of a small house.
Is a low bindu count in the 12th house good?
Yes. The twelfth’s bindus are the capacity for expense and outflow, and twenty-five or fewer gives the chart whose spending is contained, which produces the quiet accumulator more reliably than any high count elsewhere. Thirty or more in the twelfth is expense, giving or foreign living at scale; it is purposeful when the twelfth lord is dignified in the twelfth and a leak when the twelfth lord sits on the second or eleventh with that capacity behind it.
How is ashtakavarga used to predict wealth?
Three ways. The three comparisons among the money houses, the eleventh against the tenth, the eleventh against the twelfth and the second against the twelfth, give the chart’s money character in one line, earning, saving and keeping. The money lords’ own bindus in their signs say how fully their periods deliver. And Jupiter’s own bindus in the signs on the second and eleventh say which of its transit years over those houses will pay, which is the money calendar.
What does Jupiter’s bhinnashtakavarga tell about money?
The strength of each of Jupiter’s transit years. Four or more of Jupiter’s bindus in the sign on the second house makes the year Jupiter crosses the second a year of accumulation in full, five or six the best money year of the twelve, and two or fewer a year of expecting; the same applies to the sign on the eleventh. Read with the house’s sarvashtakavarga of twenty-eight or more and the running dasha, it is the double filter that separates a harvest year from a hopeful one.
What does the 11th house having more bindus than the 12th mean?
That the chart gains more than it spends and accumulates by nature, since the twelfth is the second house counted from the eleventh and so the expense of the gains. The reverse, a twelfth higher than the eleventh, is the chart that spends more than it gains and whose account stays empty whatever the income. Read with the second against the twelfth, which decides whether what is gained is kept, it gives the saving character of the chart in two numbers.
Can ashtakavarga alone show if I will be rich?
No; it measures capacity, and capacity needs supply and permission. The second and eleventh lords, their dignity, placement and connection, are the supply, the dasha is the permission, and the bindus say how much each house can carry when both are present. A second of thirty-five with its lord debilitated in the eighth is a strong container with a weak supply, and the numbers are read after the lords and never instead of them.

Your money houses have numbers. Have you read them?
A one-to-one consultation reads the sarvashtakavarga of your second, eleventh and twelfth with the three comparisons, the money lords' own bindus, and Jupiter's and Saturn's bindus in your money signs, and marks the transit years that pass the filter inside your money periods.
