Which Dasha Gives Love? All Nine Periods for Relationships, and the Ones That Break Them

The question is asked as if there were one answer for every chart, which Venus period gives love and which Rahu period breaks it, and the honest reply is the rule this cluster’s planet pages have used throughout: a period gives by what its planet rules first, where it sits second, and what it is third. Jupiter’s dasha marries a Gemini, whose seventh it rules, and sends a Sagittarius abroad, whose twelfth it rules. Saturn’s dasha is the bond’s own period for Cancer and the quarrel’s for Leo. Venus’s twenty years are romance for Gemini and the sixth house for Taurus. The planet’s nature, Venus’s pleasure, Saturn’s delay, Rahu’s appetite, colours all of it, but the colour is not the shape, and the natives who are told “Venus dasha means love” and receive twenty years of service have been read by nature alone. This article reads all nine periods for relationships by the rule, with a table of which ascendants each carries the bond for and which the romance for; the periods that break relationships and the junctions where they end for good; the sub-period pairs that make and unmake bonds; and a chart in which Jupiter’s period married a Gemini in Jupiter-Venus and tested the marriage in Jupiter-Saturn.

It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. The timing of a relationship’s beginning, with the carrier, sub-period and trigger method, is the earlier page, When Will I Find Love?; the timing of marriage itself belongs to the marriage cluster, in Marriage Timing by Dasha and Transits; and every period’s full profile is on the mahadasha index, with the periods of marital trouble in the dasha periods of marital discord.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha; every period read by the rule of lordship first, occupation second and nature third, with the nodes read through their dispositors; the fifth as romance, the seventh as the bond, the twelfth, eighth and sixth as the houses that end, break and dispute; the Moon chart as the check and Jupiter’s transit as the filter. A period is a season, never a verdict, and the reading gives dates. Nothing here is a remedy for a difficult dasha.

The rule: lordship first, occupation second, nature third

A planet’s period delivers the houses it rules, coloured by the house it sits in, in the manner of its nature, and the three layers are ranked. Lordship decides the subject: the seventh lord’s period brings the bond, the fifth lord’s the romance, the twelfth lord’s the ending or the distance, whatever the planet is. Occupation decides the setting: a seventh lord sitting in the tenth brings the bond through work, in the ninth through a journey, in the twelfth abroad. Nature decides the manner: Venus brings it with pleasure, Saturn with delay, Mars with heat, Rahu with appetite, Jupiter with sanction. A reading that begins with nature, “Venus dasha means love”, has inverted the order, and it produces the two commonest disappointments in the subject: the native who expected romance from Venus and received Venus’s houses, and the native who dreaded Saturn and received the bond, because Saturn was their seventh lord. The rule applies to sub-periods as to major periods, so that a Venus sub-period inside Saturn’s major period delivers Venus’s houses within Saturn’s, and the pair is read together; the sequence of periods for any birth is in the Vimshottari reference and the arithmetic that fixes their dates in the calculation guide.

The same dasha in different charts

Jupiter’s period, sixteen years, is the plainest demonstration. For Gemini, Jupiter rules the seventh and tenth, and Jupiter’s period is the bond and the standing together: the marriage, the partner of position, the couple seen in the world. For Virgo, Jupiter rules the fourth and seventh, and the period is the bond and the home, the domestic marriage. For Sagittarius, Jupiter rules the first and fourth, the self and the home, and the period’s relationships are the native’s own choices made at home. For Aries, Jupiter rules the ninth and twelfth, and the period sends the native far, the relationship abroad, the private love, the tradition. For Leo, Jupiter rules the fifth and eighth, romance and crisis in one planet, the passionate love that transforms. For Scorpio, the second and fifth, romance and the family. For Taurus, the eighth and eleventh, the friend and the crisis. Same planet, same sixteen years, same generous nature, and seven different relationship periods, decided by the first layer. The same exercise for Saturn gives the bond for Cancer and Leo, the romance for Virgo and Libra, and the far or the self for Aquarius; for Venus the bond for Aries and Scorpio, the romance for Gemini and Capricorn, and the sixth house for Taurus and Sagittarius; and the table below gives every planet for every ascendant, which is the whole answer to the question in the title.

The nine periods, one by one

The Sun’s six years bring the bond for Aquarius, whose seventh it rules, and the romance for Aries, whose fifth; elsewhere they are the self and the father, and relationships in a Sun period are formal, public, and often shaped by the father’s approval. The Moon’s ten years bring the bond for Capricorn and the romance for Pisces; elsewhere the heart is the theme, and the Moon page’s needs are loud. Mars’s seven years bring the bond for Taurus and Libra, the romance for Cancer and Sagittarius, the quarrel for Gemini and Scorpio; the years are fast and hot. Rahu’s eighteen years bring what its dispositor rules, with appetite: the outsider, the great love that reverses, in two halves. Jupiter’s sixteen bring the bond for Gemini and Virgo, the romance for Leo and Scorpio, and sanction everywhere. Saturn’s nineteen bring the bond for Cancer and Leo, the romance for Virgo and Libra, and delay, test and endurance everywhere. Mercury’s seventeen bring the bond for Sagittarius and Pisces, the romance for Taurus and Aquarius, and the talkative, negotiated relationship everywhere. Ketu’s seven bring what its dispositor rules, with detachment: the fade, the bond that asks nothing. Venus’s twenty bring the bond for Aries and Scorpio, the romance for Gemini and Capricorn, and pleasure everywhere, which is why Venus’s period is the one most often misread, since its nature is so strong that the first layer is forgotten. Each planet’s relationship reading is on its own page in this cluster, and the Venus sub-period inside each major period, the relationship sub-period of most of them, is read pair by pair on the mahadasha pages, from Sun-Venus and Moon-Venus through Mars-Venus, Rahu-Venus, Jupiter-Venus, Saturn-Venus, Mercury-Venus and Ketu-Venus.

Every ascendant appears exactly twice in the middle columns, once for its seventh lord and once for its fifth, and a native who finds their two rows has found the two periods that carry their relationships, with the other seven read by occupation and nature.

The periods that break relationships

Four periods end relationships, by lordship, and the breakup page has used them: the twelfth lord’s, which ends by departure and loss; the eighth lord’s, which ends by crisis and sometimes returns transformed; the sixth lord’s, which ends by quarrel and leaves the two as adversaries; and Ketu’s, which ends by the fade. The same planet is a breaker for one ascendant and a carrier for another, which is the rule again: Mars is the twelfth lord for Taurus and the seventh lord for Libra, Venus the twelfth lord for Gemini and Scorpio and the seventh lord for Aries, Jupiter the twelfth lord for Aries and Capricorn and the seventh for Gemini, and the native must look up their own. A breaker’s period does not break every relationship; it breaks the ones that were carried by the period before and had no other carrier, and a relationship with the seventh lord in dignity survives a twelfth lord’s sub-period as a season of distance rather than an ending. The reading of a breaker’s period for a couple is a date and a description, the sub-period’s dates and the kind of ending its lord gives, and the sentence that a relationship which comes through a twelfth lord’s sub-period intact has passed the ending season and enters the next carrier’s, which is usually the seventh lord’s, with the bond made permanent.

The junctions: where relationships end for good

The change from one major period to the next is the junction, and it is the classical time for a relationship to end for good: the relationship that lived in Venus’s twenty years ends in the first year of the Sun’s, the one that lived in Rahu’s ends in the first year of Jupiter’s, and the couple supply reasons afterward that the chart did not need. The junction ends relationships because the whole set of houses the period delivers changes at once, so that a bond carried by the seventh lord’s major period has no carrier in the next unless the next lord also rules a relationship house or sits in one, which the table tells the native. The reading of a junction for a couple is the most useful timing sentence in this page: the date of the change, whether the next period carries the bond, and, if it does not, what carries the relationship across, which is a sub-period of the seventh lord or Venus early in the new period, Jupiter’s transit over the seventh, or the Navamsa’s strength. A relationship that crosses a junction with a carrier waiting on the other side is the one that becomes the marriage; one that crosses without is the one the breakup page reads as the ending that came with the calendar, and the couple who know the date can decide before it whether to build the carrier, which is to say whether to marry in the old period’s last carrier sub-period, which many couples do without knowing why.

The sub-period pairs that make and unmake bonds

A major period and a sub-period are read as a pair, and certain pairs make bonds and certain pairs unmake them in most charts. The makers: the seventh lord’s major period with Venus’s sub-period, or Venus’s with the seventh lord’s, the classical marriage pair; the fifth lord’s with the seventh lord’s, the love-marriage pair; any carrier’s major period with Jupiter’s sub-period, the sanction inside the season; the eleventh lord’s sub-period inside a carrier’s period, the wish fulfilled. The unmakers: any carrier’s major period with the twelfth lord’s sub-period, the distance inside the season, which many relationships survive and some do not; the eighth lord’s sub-period inside a carrier’s period, the crisis; Ketu’s sub-period inside Venus’s or the seventh lord’s period, the fade inside the season of love, which is the pair behind most of the breakups that puzzle their owners; and Rahu’s sub-period inside the seventh lord’s period, the appetite inside the bond, the pair behind most of the affairs. The pairs that test without unmaking are Saturn’s sub-period inside any carrier’s period, the weight inside the season, and Mars’s, the quarrel inside it. A couple given the pairs in their next decade, by date, has the map of the relationship’s seasons, and a reading that gives it has done what the dasha is for.

The Moon-chart check

Every period is read a second time from the Moon, with the houses counted from the Moon’s sign, and the two readings are compared. A planet that rules the seventh from the lagna and the fifth from the Moon carries the bond and the romance at once and its period is the strongest relationship period the chart has; a planet that rules the seventh from the lagna and the twelfth from the Moon carries a bond the heart experiences as a loss, the marriage the native does not feel, which is a real and common reading. The Moon chart also settles the periods whose lagna lordship is neutral, since a Mercury period that rules the third and sixth from the lagna and the seventh from the Moon is a relationship period in the heart’s terms, and the native meets someone in it whom the lagna chart did not promise. The check takes two minutes per period and it changes about a third of the readings, which is why the reading that skips it is wrong about a third of the time; the rule is that the lagna decides the event and the Moon decides the feeling, and a period that carries the event in the lagna and the feeling in the Moon is the one in which the native marries and is happy about it.

The transit filter

The period gives the season and the transit gives the year within it, and the filter is Jupiter’s: a carrier’s sub-period with Jupiter transiting the seventh, the fifth or the eleventh from the lagna or from the Moon, or over natal Venus, is the window, and the same sub-period without Jupiter’s transit is a season of readiness with no date in it. Saturn’s transit over the seventh or the fifth is the reverse filter, the two and a half years in which even a carrier’s sub-period delivers slowly and with a test, and a couple whose carrier sub-period falls entirely under Saturn’s transit over the seventh should be told that the bond is being made under weight and will hold. The nodes’ transits over the fifth or seventh add Rahu’s appetite or Ketu’s fade to whatever the period is doing, and a Ketu sub-period with Ketu’s transit over the seventh is the fade doubled. The filter is applied last, after the lordship, the pairs and the Moon check, and it never overrides them: a Jupiter transit over the seventh in a twelfth lord’s sub-period is a year of offers the native cannot take, which is a sentence this cluster has used before and which the transit filter exists to produce.

Finding your own relationship periods in ten minutes

With the dasha table open, the native finds their relationship periods in four steps. First, find the two rows of the table above that name their ascendant, which gives their seventh lord and their fifth lord, and mark every major period and sub-period of those two planets in the next fifteen years. Second, add Venus’s periods and sub-periods as the third carrier, since Venus’s nature is strong enough to bring a relationship through any house it rules, and mark them. Third, find the twelfth, eighth and sixth lords for their ascendant and Ketu, and mark their sub-periods as the ending seasons, with the junctions between major periods marked as the places to watch. Fourth, note the pairs: a carrier’s major period with a carrier’s sub-period is a making season, a carrier’s with a breaker’s a testing one, a breaker’s with a breaker’s an ending one. The result is a fifteen-year map with the making, testing and ending seasons marked by date, which is what the consultation’s dasha reading gives with three additions the ten minutes cannot make: the Moon-chart check, the transit filter, and the dignity of each carrier, since a seventh lord in a dusthana carries the bond into difficulty and the map should say so.

A worked chart: Jupiter’s period for a Gemini lagna

A Gemini lagna woman, particulars altered. Jupiter, lord of the seventh and tenth, sits in Libra in the fifth: the bond’s lord in the romance house, the seventh lord in the fifth, the join in one direction, and Jupiter’s sixteen years the bond’s own period, coloured by the fifth, so the marriage comes through a romance. Mercury, the lagna lord and lord of the fourth, sits in Sagittarius in the seventh. Venus, lord of the fifth and twelfth, sits in Scorpio in the sixth: the romance’s lord and the ending’s in one planet, in the house of work and dispute. Saturn, lord of the eighth and ninth, sits in Capricorn in the eighth, its own sign. Mars, lord of the sixth and eleventh, sits in Aries in the eleventh, its own sign. The Sun, lord of the third, sits in Sagittarius in the seventh with Mercury. The Moon, lord of the second, sits in Aquarius in the ninth. Rahu in Leo in the third, Ketu in Aquarius in the ninth with the Moon. From the table: Jupiter carries the bond for Gemini and Venus the romance, and the breakers are Venus as the twelfth lord, Saturn as the eighth lord and Mars as the sixth, so that the romance’s own planet is also the ending’s, which is the chart’s whole story.

Jupiter’s major period began in her twenty-fourth year. Jupiter-Jupiter, the seventh lord’s own opening, two years and two months, was the bond’s season announced and not yet delivered, a relationship that began and did not hold, since the sub-period’s lord sits in the fifth and gave a romance first. Jupiter-Saturn, the eighth and ninth lord’s, two and a half years, was the crisis and the far, a relationship with a man from another tradition that ended in the eighth’s way. Jupiter-Mercury, the lagna lord’s, in the seventh, two years and three months, was the native herself in the bond’s house, the season in which she stopped chasing and was found, and the relationship that became the marriage began in it, with Jupiter transiting Sagittarius, her seventh, in its first year, the transit filter passing. Jupiter-Ketu, eleven months, was the fade that did not come, the relationship surviving Ketu’s sub-period because the seventh lord’s major period carried it, which is the rule that a relationship with a carrier survives a breaker’s sub-period as a season. Jupiter-Venus, the fifth and twelfth lord’s, two years and eight months, the marriage pair, the seventh lord’s major period with Venus’s sub-period, was the marriage, at thirty-two, and the twelfth’s other meaning too, since they married and moved to another city, Venus delivering both its houses at once. The reading, given in Jupiter-Saturn when she was sure the eighth’s crisis was the pattern, had said: Jupiter carries your bond, and this period is the bond’s own; the Saturn sub-period is the eighth’s and is a season, not the shape; the marriage pair is Jupiter-Venus, five years on, and the relationship that becomes it begins in Jupiter-Mercury, in the seventh, when Jupiter transits your seventh; and Venus is also your twelfth lord, so the marriage moves. It did, and the sentence that helped was the one about the season and the shape.

Frequently asked questions

Which dasha gives love or a relationship?

The period of the planet that rules the seventh house for the bond or the fifth for the romance, found from the ascendant, with Venus’s period as the third carrier by nature: Venus rules the seventh for Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter for Gemini and Virgo, Saturn for Cancer and Leo, Mars for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Sagittarius and Pisces, the Sun for Aquarius and the Moon for Capricorn. A period gives by what it rules first, where it sits second and what it is third, and the same Venus period is romance for one chart and the sixth house for another.

Which dasha is bad for relationships?

The periods of the twelfth lord, which ends by departure, the eighth lord, which ends by crisis, the sixth lord, which ends by quarrel, and Ketu, which ends by the fade, found for each ascendant from the lagna; the same planet is a breaker for one ascendant and a carrier for another. A breaker’s period ends the relationships that had no other carrier, and a relationship with the seventh lord in dignity survives a twelfth lord’s sub-period as a season of distance rather than an ending. The junction between two major periods is the classical time for a relationship to end for good.

Does Venus mahadasha always give love?

No; it is the most misread period, since Venus’s nature is so strong that its lordship is forgotten. Venus’s twenty years bring the bond for Aries and Scorpio, the romance for Gemini and Capricorn, and the sixth house for Taurus and Sagittarius, love arriving through work or dispute if at all; for the other ascendants they bring the house Venus rules, with pleasure laid over it. A native expecting twenty years of romance and receiving the sixth house has been read by nature alone.

Which antardasha is good for love?

The sub-period pairs that make bonds: the seventh lord’s major period with Venus’s sub-period or the reverse, the classical marriage pair; the fifth lord’s with the seventh lord’s, the love-marriage pair; a carrier’s period with Jupiter’s sub-period, the sanction; and the eleventh lord’s sub-period inside a carrier’s, the wish fulfilled. The unmakers are the twelfth or eighth lord’s sub-period inside a carrier’s period, Ketu’s inside Venus’s or the seventh lord’s, and Rahu’s inside the seventh lord’s; Saturn’s and Mars’s sub-periods test without unmaking.

What is a dasha junction and why do relationships end there?

The change from one major period to the next, at which the whole set of houses the period delivers changes at once, so that a bond carried by the seventh lord’s major period has no carrier in the next unless the next lord also rules or sits in a relationship house. Relationships end for good at junctions more than anywhere else, and the couple supply reasons afterward that the chart did not need. A relationship that crosses a junction with a carrier waiting on the other side, a seventh lord’s or Venus’s sub-period early in the new period, is the one that becomes the marriage.

Should relationship dashas be read from the lagna or the Moon?

Both, and compared: the lagna decides the event and the Moon decides the feeling. A planet ruling the seventh from the lagna and the fifth from the Moon has the strongest relationship period the chart makes; one ruling the seventh from the lagna and the twelfth from the Moon carries a bond the heart experiences as a loss, the marriage the native does not feel. The Moon check changes about a third of the readings, which is why a reading that skips it is wrong about that often.

How do I find my own relationship dasha periods?

Find the seventh and fifth lords for your ascendant from the table, mark their periods and sub-periods in the next fifteen years, add Venus’s as the third carrier, then mark the twelfth, eighth and sixth lords’ and Ketu’s sub-periods as the ending seasons and the junctions as the places to watch; pairs of carrier with carrier are making seasons, carrier with breaker testing ones, breaker with breaker ending ones. A consultation adds the Moon-chart check, Jupiter’s transit as the filter, and each carrier’s dignity, which the ten minutes cannot give.
