Ghatak Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 10th House, Ketu in the 4th

Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha arises when Rahu sits in the tenth house and Ketu in the fourth, and every planet falls on the same side of the nodal line. The tenth house is career, status, authority, reputation and public life; the fourth covers the home, property and vehicles, the mother, early education and peace of mind. It is the reverse of Shankhpal, with the ambition now on the public side and the detachment on the private one. The name is the most alarming of the twelve, since ghatak means destructive or deadly, and the ghatak kaal sarp yoga is often presented accordingly. The chart itself tells a very different story, because Rahu in the tenth is one of Rahu’s strongest positions. Below, the article takes the name first, then Rahu in the 10th house and Ketu in the 4th house, the way the two forms split births at noon, the comparison with Shankhpal, the KP career check and timing, and it finishes with two consultation charts.

The site’s Kaal Sarp dosha guide discusses the formation and the doubts about its classical roots, and the overview of the twelve types gives the short version of each. For the career question in particular, Kaal Sarp dosha and career looks at the claims across all types. The same axis with the nodes reversed is Shankhpal Kaal Sarp dosha.

Conventions used. A chart counts as Ghatak only under the strict rule, which demands that no planet stray outside the arc from Rahu to Ketu, and only when Rahu’s whole-sign house is the tenth. Nodes are mean and the ayanamsa Lahiri, as Jagannatha Hora sets them. For comparison with Shankhpal, 340,000 random Delhi births between 1950 and 2010 were cast using the Swiss Ephemeris, and both types were drawn from that one sample.

What Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha is

When Rahu occupies the tenth house, Ketu occupies the fourth. If all seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn then crowd into a single half of the chart, the chart is given the Ghatak label, the tenth type in the modern scheme, occasionally written Ghatak kalsarp dosh. Neither the label nor the formation comes from Parashara, as the main guide explains.

The formation’s effect, where there is one, is to make the axis a theme. With Rahu on the tenth, the appetite of the chart goes into career, recognition and public achievement; with Ketu on the fourth, home, property and the comforts of settled life hold the person less. The typical Ghatak life is outward-facing and driven, with a private life that is simpler or less rooted than most.

A frightening name for a strong placement

Several of the type names were chosen for drama, and Ghatak is the clearest case. The name describes nothing in the chart. Rahu in the tenth sits in an upachaya, one of the houses of growth where Rahu is traditionally at its strongest, and the twelve-type overview notes that the placement is generally regarded as strong for career, often found among politicians and business leaders. The site’s Mahapadma article sets Ghatak alongside the other types that put Rahu in a growing house. Whatever else the formation does, it does not destroy.

Rahu in the 10th: ambition, visibility and a fast rise

Rahu in the 10th house tends to give strong ambition, a hunger for recognition and an ability to rise quickly, often in fields that are new, technical, foreign-connected or in the public eye: technology, media, politics, large organisations, international business. People with it are frequently unconventional in how they build a career, and willing to take risks that others would not. The site’s career article adds a fair caution: the drive can sometimes reach for shortcuts. Rahu in the 10th house covers the placement fully, and the 10th lord in each house describes the lord Rahu acts for in a Ghatak chart.

Ketu in the 4th: a home held loosely

Ketu in the 4th house tends to loosen the ties of home. People with it often live away from where they grew up, move frequently, care little for owning property or accumulating comforts, or feel a restlessness that a settled home does not cure. The relationship with the mother is often independent rather than close, without implying any harm to her. There is frequently a strong inner life, sometimes spiritual, that stands in for the security others find in a house. Ketu in the 4th house describes the placement, and whether property is actually bought is read from the fourth cusp in KP, not from Ketu’s presence.

Before noon and after noon

The fourth and tenth houses mark the chart’s vertical axis, so in a Ghatak chart all the planets fall either in the eastern half, houses 11 to 3, or the western half, houses 5 to 9. That includes the Sun, and the Sun’s side of the meridian tells the time of day. When the planets run from Rahu in the tenth through houses 11 to 3, the ascending form, the Sun is on the rising side of the meridian and the birth falls between midnight and noon: 99 percent of ascending Ghatak charts in the sample did. Descending charts, whose planets occupy houses 5 to 9, are afternoon, evening or late-night births, noon to midnight, again in 99 percent of cases. The sample divided 51 percent ascending to 49 percent descending.

The lagna is part of the same pattern. It lies inside the hemming in every ascending Ghatak chart and outside it in every descending one, so any astrologer who cancels the formation when the lagna escapes would rule out nearly half of Ghatak charts on that ground alone.

Ghatak and Shankhpal compared

Ghatak and Shankhpal are the two types on the meridian, and the same sample gives a direct comparison.

Rises, reversals and reputation

The genuine risk with a tenth-house Rahu is not failure but volatility. Careers built on Rahu’s appetite can rise fast and meet sudden reversals, public criticism or a change of fortune, particularly when Rahu’s own periods turn to less supportive sub-periods. The ghatak kaal sarp dosha effects people report are mostly of this kind, and they are managed the way any fast-rising career is managed: by building on real competence, keeping one’s conduct clean, and not mistaking a Rahu period’s momentum for permanence.

The KP career check

KP decides career questions from the sub-lord of the tenth cusp, read through its star lord and sub-lord chain, as career selection through the 10th cusp sub-lord explains. When the chain signifies the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, the career is supported; when it leans to the 5th, 8th and 12th, there are obstacles or breaks in the relevant periods. The site’s career article adds a useful case: when Rahu itself is the tenth cusp sub-lord, its own significations decide the matter, favourable with 2-6-10-11 and difficult with 5-8-12, and neither depends on the hemming. Whether a person is better suited to employment or to running a business is a separate reading of the sixth and seventh cusps, set out in job versus business in KP.

When the Ghatak axis is active

The career side comes forward most in Rahu’s Mahadasha, eighteen years that often bring the steepest rise of a working life, and sometimes its sharpest turns. The home side comes forward in Ketu’s Mahadasha, seven years that tend to bring moves, changes of residence, a loosening of ties to property, or a shift of attention inward. Periods of the tenth and fourth lords stir the same houses, and a Rahu or Ketu bhukti within some other Mahadasha gives a brief taste of each. When transit brings the nodes back over the tenth and fourth, once in each nodal cycle of about 18.6 years, career and residence decisions often cluster, provided the dasha supports them.

Partial charts and remedies

In 55 percent of Ghatak charts from the sample, a node’s own sign, the tenth or the fourth, also held a planet, which makes them partial by the reasoning set out in partial Kaal Sarp dosha. Taken with the descending charts whose lagna is unhemmed, and with Rahu’s strength in the tenth, the fully formed, unsoftened Ghatak chart is the exception.

The ghatak kaal sarp dosha remedies commonly sold tend to trade on the name. Anyone may perform a puja out of devotion; the chart does not call for one, and our Kaal Sarp remedies page looks at which practices have any reasoned basis. For this axis, the practical work is to keep a career’s rise on solid ground and to give home life the attention that Ketu in the fourth tends to withhold.

Two charts with the Ghatak axis

A man with Virgo ascendant, details altered, born in the early morning. Rahu is in Gemini in his tenth house and Ketu in Sagittarius in his fourth, and every planet lies in houses 11 to 3: the ascending, eastern form, with the lagna inside. Rahu acts for Mercury, which rules both his lagna and his tenth house. Born with the Moon in Hasta, he had eight years of the Moon’s own period, Mars’s seven after it, and then Rahu’s Mahadasha from fifteen until thirty-three. At twenty-four, in Rahu-Mercury, he co-founded a payments start-up. At twenty-six, in Rahu-Ketu, a product failure drew public criticism and the company nearly folded, and at twenty-nine, in Rahu-Venus, with Venus his second and ninth lord, it raised the funding that made it. At thirty-four, in Jupiter-Jupiter, he sold it. Through all of it he lived in rented flats, and he still owns no home.

A woman with Aries ascendant, details altered, born in the evening. Rahu is in Capricorn in her tenth and Ketu in Cancer in her fourth, with every planet in houses 5 to 9: the descending, western form, with the lagna outside the hemming. Rahu acts for Saturn, lord of her tenth and eleventh houses. Her Hasta Moon supplied five years of the Moon’s own period; Mars’s seven followed, and Rahu’s Mahadasha started when she was twelve. At twenty-one, in Rahu-Mercury, with Mercury her third lord, she joined a news channel as a reporter, and at twenty-five, in Rahu-Venus, she began anchoring its evening bulletin. She moved cities five times in the years that followed, and at thirty-one, in Jupiter-Jupiter, with Jupiter her ninth and twelfth lord, she took a post as a correspondent abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha?

The tenth Kaal Sarp type: Rahu in the 10th house, Ketu in the 4th, and the whole planetary line-up confined to one side of the meridian they mark. Career, status and public life are emphasised over home, property and roots.

Does the name mean Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha is dangerous?

No. Ghatak means destructive, but the name is a modern label chosen for effect. Rahu in the 10th is an upachaya placement widely regarded as strong for career.

Is Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha good for career?

It often goes with ambition and a fast rise, though sometimes with sharp turns. KP reads the outcome from the sub-lord of the 10th cusp, supportive with 2-6-10-11 and obstructive with 5-8-12 in the matching periods.

How is Ghatak different from Shankhpal?

The nodes are reversed. Shankhpal puts Rahu in the 4th and the restlessness at home; Ghatak puts Rahu in the 10th and the drive into career. Their two forms divide births before and after noon in opposite ways.

Does Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha affect home or the mother?

Ketu in the 4th tends to make home life less rooted and the bond with the mother independent, without predicting harm. Property purchase is read from the 4th cusp sub-lord.

What are the remedies for Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha?

The chart does not require any. Devotional ritual is a personal matter; building a career on solid ground and tending home life are the useful responses.

When is the Ghatak axis active?

Mostly in Rahu’s periods for career and Ketu’s for home and residence, in the periods of the 10th and 4th lords, and when transiting nodes return to the same houses.
