Shankhpal Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 4th House, Ketu in the 10th

Shankhpal Kaal Sarp dosha is the type with Rahu in the fourth house, Ketu in the tenth, and all seven planets gathered on one side of them. The fourth house is home, mother, property, vehicles, schooling and inner peace; the tenth is career, status, reputation and public responsibility. So the Shankhpal axis runs straight between private life and public life, the foundations of a life and what is built on them. The name comes from Shankhapala, one of the eight great serpents of Indian tradition, whose name means guardian of the conch. The shankhpal kaal sarp yoga is usually presented as a threat to domestic happiness or career, and this article looks at what the axis actually does: how rare the full formation is, what Rahu in the 4th house and Ketu in the 10th house tend to describe, the eastern and western forms, the KP checks for property, residence abroad and work, the periods that activate the axis, and two charts from practice.

The formation in general, including the questions over its classical standing, is covered in the site’s main Kaal Sarp guide, and a paragraph on each type appears in the overview of all twelve types. For the career side in particular, Kaal Sarp dosha and career examines the claims directly. The same axis reversed, with Rahu in the tenth and Ketu in the fourth, is Ghatak Kaal Sarp dosha.

Conventions used. Only strict formations count here, with the Sun, the Moon and the five other planets all inside the arc from one node to the other by exact degree, as in the site’s main guide, with the type set by Rahu’s whole-sign house. Mean nodes, Lahiri ayanamsa, Jagannatha Hora settings. Shankhpal charts were collected by screening 260,000 random births from 1950 to 2010, cast for Delhi with the Swiss Ephemeris.

What Shankhpal Kaal Sarp dosha is

When Rahu stands in the fourth house, Ketu stands in the tenth, and if every planet from the Sun to Saturn then lies in a single half of the chart between them, the popular scheme calls it Shankhpal, sometimes spelled Shankhpal kalsarp dosh, the fourth of the twelve types. The serpent names are a recent overlay on an older interest in the nodes, and the main guide explains why the formation itself is not found in Parashara.

Where the formation has an effect, it is concentration. Rahu brings hunger, novelty and restlessness to its house, Ketu brings detachment and a sense of having outgrown its house, and with every planet on one side the two houses on the axis become persistent themes. In a Shankhpal chart the persistent question is how to balance a settled private base against ambition and standing in the world.

How often it occurs

Strict Kaal Sarp formations of any kind appear in roughly 7 percent of births, each type in about a twelfth of those, which puts a full Shankhpal formation at about one birth in 170. Calculators that also flag partial formations show some type of Kaal Sarp in about a fifth of charts, and Shankhpal in close to 2 percent. The births are not spread evenly: in some years almost none occur, in others far more, and within those years the formation switches on and off as the Moon passes from one side of the nodes to the other.

Rahu in the 4th: home, property and roots

Rahu in the 4th house tends to make home a moving target. People with it often change residence more than most, live abroad or far from where they grew up, or build a home life that looks unusual to their family. The hunger Rahu brings can attach to property itself, a strong drive to own land, houses or vehicles, or to comfort and status at home. Underneath there can be a restlessness that makes contentment hard to settle into. Rahu in the 4th house covers the placement in general.

In a Shankhpal chart the sign Rahu occupies belongs to the fourth lord, and Rahu works as that planet’s agent. A well-placed fourth lord turns Rahu’s hunger into property and a secure base, often built far from home; an afflicted one tends to keep the restlessness in the foreground.

Ketu in the 10th: career without attachment to status

Ketu in the 10th house tends to separate the work from the wish for recognition. People with it often do excellent work in specialised, technical, research or spiritual fields, change direction abruptly when a role stops meaning anything, or step away from positions that others would compete for. The career can have unexpected turns, and the person may be admired for expertise more than for rank. Ketu in the 10th house describes the placement.

This is the part of the Shankhpal axis that frightens people most, and it is the part most often misread. Ketu in the tenth does not deny a career; it changes the person’s relationship to status, and many highly accomplished people have it. What the career actually brings is read from the tenth cusp in KP and the dasha, as the table below sets out.

The meridian axis: eastern and western forms

The fourth and tenth houses mark the vertical line of the chart, from the lowest point to the highest, so the Shankhpal axis divides the chart into an eastern and a western half, just as the Anant axis, described in Anant Kaal Sarp dosha, divides it along the horizon. In the ascending form the planets run from Rahu through houses 5 to 9, the western half, and the lagna lies outside the hemming; in the descending form they sit in houses 11 to 3, the eastern half, with the lagna inside. In the sample 44 percent of Shankhpal charts were ascending and 56 percent descending.

Practitioners who read the halves of the chart tend to see the eastern half as the side of self-direction and the western half as the side of responsiveness to others. A descending Shankhpal chart often belongs to someone who builds a life on their own initiative; an ascending one to someone whose life is shaped by partners, employers and circumstances. Neither is a verdict, and the lagna outside the hemming in the ascending form is, for some astrologers, a reason to treat the formation as cancelled.

Private life against public life

The Shankhpal axis is at its clearest when home and career pull against each other: a promotion that means moving, a family property that ties someone to one place, a career that eats into home life, or a home life that makes ambition feel pointless. Rahu on the home side and Ketu on the career side typically make the home the more restless of the two and the career the more detached. Most of the shankhpal kaal sarp dosha effects reported in consultations turn out to be versions of that tension, and the charts that handle it well are those where the person chooses deliberately rather than letting one side drain the other.

KP checks for property, residence and work

In KP the axis only matters through what the cusps promise. The table sets out the questions people with this formation ask most, what decides each one, and the house groups the site’s KP guides use.

QuestionWhat decides itHouses to look for
Will I buy a home, and when? The 4th cusp sub-lord, then the dasha4, 11 and 12 promise purchase; 3 and 10 point to sale or loss of property
Will I settle abroad?The 12th cusp sub-lord, then the dasha3, 9 and 12 together
Is a job change or a break coming?The 10th cusp sub-lord and the running dasha2, 6, 10 and 11 support employment; 5, 8 and 12 bring breaks
Will the career bring standing? The 10th and 11th cusps10 and 11 together, with the lagna
How will studies go?The 4th, 9th and 11th cusps4 for schooling, 9 for higher study, 11 for success

The details of each check are in the site’s guides to buying property through the 4th cusp sub-lord, foreign settlement through the 12th cusp and timing a job change. None of them is decided by the Kaal Sarp label.

The mother and the home of childhood

The fourth house is also the mother and the atmosphere of the childhood home, so Rahu there is often linked with an unusual relationship with the mother: a strong, unconventional or distant mother, a childhood of moves, or a family home the person outgrows early. What that relationship is actually like depends on the fourth lord and the Moon, as the 4th lord in each house shows, and it is often warmer than the formation’s reputation suggests. A Shankhpal chart does not predict harm to the mother, and no responsible reading should imply that it does.

When the axis is active

The axis tends to come alive in the periods of the nodes. Rahu’s eighteen-year Mahadasha usually brings fourth-house matters forward: moves, property, the search for a settled base. Ketu’s seven-year Mahadasha tends to bring the tenth-house themes of detachment from status, career turns and a rethink of what work is for. The periods of the fourth and tenth lords activate the axis through its own houses, and node sub-periods inside other Mahadashas give shorter versions.

The slow movement of the nodes adds another clock. About every eighteen and a half years transiting Rahu returns to the fourth house and Ketu to the tenth, and those spells often coincide with decisions about where to live and what to do for a living. Whether they bring change depends on the dasha running at the time.

How often it is partial, and what about remedies

More than half of Shankhpal charts in the sample, 52 percent, had a planet sharing the fourth or tenth sign with a node, which the site treats as a partial formation, discussed in partial Kaal Sarp dosha. With the ascending charts whose lagna falls outside the hemming, the charts that meet every condition of a clean, full formation are a minority of those carrying the name.

Among the shankhpal kaal sarp dosha remedies commonly offered are Kaal Sarp pujas, Rahu mantras and gemstones. A ritual chosen out of faith is a personal matter and harmless; nothing in the chart requires one, and the site’s review of Kaal Sarp remedies discusses what has a reasoned basis. The practical work for this axis is deciding consciously how home and career are to share a life.

Two charts with the Shankhpal axis

A woman with Libra rising, details altered. Rahu occupies Capricorn in her fourth house and Ketu Cancer in her tenth, with all seven planets in houses 5 to 9: an ascending, western Shankhpal formation with the lagna outside the hemming. Rahu works for Saturn, her yogakaraka, and her 4th cusp sub-lord signifies the 4th, 11th and 12th houses together with the 6th. With her Moon in Rohini she had seven years of the Moon’s period and Mars’s seven before Rahu’s Mahadasha began at fourteen. At eighteen, in Rahu-Jupiter, she went abroad to study, then worked in three countries. At thirty, in Rahu-Moon, with the Moon her tenth lord, she founded a consultancy that helps families relocate, and at thirty-three, in Jupiter-Jupiter, with Jupiter her sixth lord, she bought her first home on a loan, as the 6th in her sub-lord chain suggested.

A man with Taurus rising, details altered. Rahu occupies Leo in his fourth and Ketu Aquarius in his tenth, with all seven planets in houses 11 to 3: a descending, eastern Shankhpal formation with the lagna inside. Ketu works for Saturn, his yogakaraka. The Moon in Punarvasu started him in Jupiter’s period with eight years left; Saturn’s followed, then Mercury’s from the age of twenty-seven, and Ketu’s took over at forty-four. Through Mercury’s Mahadasha, Mercury being his second lord, he rose to regional head of a private bank. At forty-five, in Ketu-Venus, with Venus his lagna lord, he resigned and bought farmland near his home town, where he now runs an organic farm: Rahu’s fourth-house pull toward land, Ketu’s tenth-house indifference to rank.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shankhpal Kaal Sarp dosha?

The fourth Kaal Sarp type: Rahu in the 4th house, Ketu in the 10th, and every planet in one half of the chart between them. It emphasises the balance between home, property and roots on one side and career and status on the other.

Does Shankhpal Kaal Sarp dosha affect home and property?

It tends to make home the more restless side of life, with moves, residence far from one’s roots or a strong drive to own property. Whether and when property is bought is decided by the 4th cusp sub-lord and the dasha, looking for the 4th, 11th and 12th houses.

Will Ketu in the 10th house stop my career?

No. It changes the relationship with status rather than denying work, and often goes with deep expertise and unexpected turns. The career itself is judged from the 10th cusp sub-lord and the dasha.

How common is Shankhpal Kaal Sarp dosha?

Uncommon in full: the strict degree test finds it in roughly 0.6 percent of births. Include partial formations and it appears in close to 2 percent of charts.

What do the eastern and western forms mean?

With the nodes on the 4th and 10th, all the planets fall either in the western half (houses 5 to 9, the ascending form) or the eastern half (houses 11 to 3, the descending form). The eastern form is usually read as more self-directed, the western as more shaped by others.

What are the remedies for Shankhpal Kaal Sarp dosha?

No remedy is required. A puja or mantra chosen out of faith is a personal matter. The practical step is to decide deliberately how home and career will share your time and energy.

When is the Shankhpal axis active?

The node periods bring it forward most, Rahu’s for home and Ketu’s for career, along with the periods of the 4th and 10th lords and the stretches, about eighteen and a half years apart, when the nodes transit the same two houses again.
