Anant Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 1st House, Ketu in the 7th

Anant Kaal Sarp dosha is the name given to a chart in which Rahu occupies the lagna, Ketu the seventh house, and all seven planets fall on one side of the axis between them. It is the first of the twelve Kaal Sarp types, each named after a serpent of Indian tradition and each defined by the house Rahu occupies, and Anant takes its name from Ananta, the endless serpent on whom Vishnu rests. The axis it describes is the most personal one in the chart: the self and the body in the lagna, the partner and the public in the seventh. Most of what circulates online about the anant kaal sarp yoga is fear; this article sets that aside and explains how rare the full formation is, what the axis actually emphasises, how the marriage question should be judged, the KP check that decides what the chart promises, why about half of these charts meet a cancellation condition, and how timing works, with two charts from practice.

The background, including the fact that Parashara’s text does not describe Kaal Sarp dosha as it is promoted today, is in the complete guide to Kaal Sarp dosha, and a short summary of all twelve types is in the 12 types of Kaal Sarp dosha. The reverse axis, with Rahu in the seventh and Ketu in the lagna, is Takshak Kaal Sarp dosha.

Conventions used. The Kaal Sarp rule here is the strict one used in the site’s main guide: all seven planets between Rahu and Ketu by degree, with the type set by the whole-sign house Rahu occupies. Positions are sidereal with the Lahiri ayanamsa and mean nodes, as in Jagannatha Hora. The figures come from 40,000 random births between 1950 and 2010, plus a separate sample of 200,000 to isolate enough Anant charts, cast for Delhi with the Swiss Ephemeris.

What Anant Kaal Sarp dosha is

Rahu and Ketu always stand exactly opposite each other, so they divide the zodiac into two halves. When every one of the seven planets, from the Sun to Saturn, lies in the same half, the chart is said to have Kaal Sarp dosha, and the type is named by where Rahu falls. With Rahu in the first house, the lagna, and Ketu in the seventh, the type is Anant, also written Anant kalsarp dosh in many Hindi sources: the name comes from Ananta, the endless one, also called Shesha, the serpent who supports the worlds.

The names are poetic, but the substance is simpler. Rahu and Ketu intensify the houses they occupy, Rahu by appetite and ambition and Ketu by detachment and a sense of having done it all before, and when the planets gather on one side of them, the nodal axis becomes one of the loudest themes in the chart. In an Anant chart that theme is the relationship between who a person is and who they partner with.

How common it is, and how it is checked

By the strict rule, all seven planets between the nodes by degree, 6.8 percent of births in the sample had a full Kaal Sarp formation of some type, and Anant made up about one in twelve of those, so roughly 0.6 percent of births carry a full Anant Kaal Sarp dosha. Counting partial formations the way many calculators do raises the share of charts flagged with any type to around a fifth, close to the 20.5 percent the site’s kundali calculator flagged in a 200-chart audit, and puts Anant at a little under 2 percent.

The formation is also strongly generational. In some years of the sample almost no one was born with any Kaal Sarp type, because the slow planets straddled the nodal axis; in others about one birth in five had it. Within those years it switches on and off every fortnight or so, as the fast-moving Moon crosses from one side of the axis to the other. Checking it properly means comparing the degree of every planet with the degree of Rahu, which the guide to checking Kaal Sarp dosha in Jagannatha Hora walks through step by step.

Above or below the horizon

The Anant axis is special in one respect. The lagna is the eastern horizon and the seventh house the western one, so when the nodes sit on the 1st and 7th, the axis runs along the horizon itself, and every planet is either below the horizon, in houses 2 to 6, or above it, in houses 8 to 12. In the sample the split was even: 48 percent of Anant charts had all planets below the horizon, which is the ascending or savya form, and 52 percent all above, the descending or apasavya form.

Many practitioners read that division as a difference of orientation. Planets below the horizon tend to describe a life built privately first, through family, study, work and personal effort, with public recognition arriving later. Planets above the horizon tend to describe a life lived in public from early on, shaped by partners, employers and the wider world. Neither is better; they simply colour how the self-and-partner axis plays out.

Rahu in the lagna

Rahu in the first house puts the appetite of the chart into the person’s own identity. People with it often want a great deal for themselves and from themselves: a life that stands out, an image that is self-made, experiences others would not attempt. They tend to reinvent themselves more than once, to look or dress unconventionally, and to be drawn to foreign places, new technologies or anything that breaks with the family pattern. Rahu in the 1st house covers the placement in detail.

In a Kaal Sarp chart this matters because Rahu acts for the lord of the sign it occupies, as Rahu and Ketu as agents of their sign lords explains, and in an Anant chart that sign is the lagna itself. So Rahu becomes the agent of the lagna lord, and the condition of the lagna lord, its dignity, house and aspects, decides much of whether Rahu’s hunger in the first house turns into drive or into restlessness.

Ketu in the seventh

Ketu in the seventh house brings detachment into partnership. It often shows as a partner who is independent, spiritual, foreign, older or unusual in some way, or as a period in which the person feels distant from partnership altogether. What Ketu asks is that the relationship rest on something other than need, and many people with this placement describe a partner who is also a teacher. Ketu in the 7th house sets out the classical and practical readings.

Ketu likewise acts for its sign lord, which in an Anant chart is the seventh lord. A strong, well-placed seventh lord gives Ketu’s detachment a mature, spiritual tone in marriage; an afflicted one can make partnership the area where the person must learn the most patience.

The self and the other

Rahu in 1st house, Ketu in 7th house describes a single tension seen from two ends: how much of life is about the self, and how much about the partner and the public. Where anant kaal sarp dosha effects show at all, they tend to follow that tension, and the table shows how it commonly appears in different areas.

Area of lifeRahu in the 1st tends toKetu in the 7th tends to
Identity and imageA strong, changeable self-image and a need to be self-madeLittle interest in a partner’s image or status
AmbitionDrive to stand out and to try what others avoidReluctance to build ambition around a partnership
RelationshipsHigh expectations of life for oneselfAn independent, spiritual or unconventional partner; distance at times
Business partnershipsA preference to lead rather than share controlPartnerships that work best with clear, written roles
Public dealingsMagnetism and a gift for attracting attentionA reserve in one-to-one dealings that can read as aloofness
The inner lessonLearning to be at ease without constant self-reinventionLearning to love without clinging or withdrawing

Few charts show every row. The sign lords of the lagna and seventh, and any planet sharing those signs, decide which rows come to the fore.

Marriage and partnership

The anant kaal sarp dosha marriage question is the one most people ask, and it deserves a precise answer rather than a general warning. Ketu in the seventh can describe delay, distance or an unusual partner, but whether marriage is promised, and when, is decided elsewhere. In KP terms, the sub-lord of the seventh cusp signifying the 2nd, 7th and 11th houses promises marriage, while a sub-lord dominated by the 6th, 10th and 12th, the denial group, points to serious obstruction. Many Anant charts have a perfectly supportive seventh sub-lord, and in those the marriage comes and lasts. The site’s article on Kaal Sarp dosha and marriage examines the claim in general and finds the popular fears overstated.

The KP check for an Anant chart

The site’s approach to Kaal Sarp dosha follows KP, which does not treat the formation as a cause in itself. What matters is what Rahu, Ketu and the relevant cusps actually signify. For an Anant chart that means four steps. First, read the first and seventh cusp sub-lords, since they decide what the self and partnership houses are promised. Second, read Rahu as an agent: its sign lord, the lagna lord here, then its star lord and any planet conjoined with or aspecting it, and note which houses that chain signifies. Third, do the same for Ketu through the seventh lord. Fourth, check whether the running dasha lords signify those houses, since, as the 4-step theory sets out, the dasha decides whether a promise comes due and transits only trigger it.

Read this way, many Anant charts turn out to be ordinary. A Rahu in the lagna whose chain signifies the 1st, 10th and 11th houses can be the engine of an ambitious, successful life; a Ketu in the seventh whose chain signifies 2, 7 and 11 does not stop a good marriage. The label only becomes meaningful when the chains also connect to the difficult houses for the matter in question.

When it is partial or cancelled

Because Rahu shares the lagna’s sign in every Anant chart, the degree of the lagna itself can fall on either side of Rahu. In the sample it fell outside the planets’ half in 51 percent of Anant charts, which meets one of the cancellation conditions discussed in the Kaal Sarp cancellation rules, where some astrologers hold that a lagna outside the hemming cancels the dosha. In 52 percent of Anant charts at least one planet also shared the first or seventh sign with a node, the Moon among them in about one Anant chart in six, which the site’s main guide classes as a partial formation, covered in partial Kaal Sarp dosha.

Put together, a clean, full Anant formation with no planet in the node signs and the lagna inside the hemming is a small minority even of Anant charts. That does not make the others meaningless, since the Rahu-Ketu axis on the 1st and 7th is still emphasised, but it does mean the frightening version described online applies to very few people.

Rahu and Ketu periods, and the nodal return

The axis is most active in the dasha periods of the nodes themselves. Rahu Mahadasha, eighteen years long, tends to bring the lagna’s themes forward, identity, ambition and reinvention, and Ketu Mahadasha, seven years, the seventh-house themes of detachment and a changed relationship to partnership. Sub-periods of the nodes inside other Mahadashas bring shorter versions of the same.

Transits add a rhythm of their own. The nodes return to their natal positions about every 18.6 years, near the ages of 18 or 19, 37, 56 and 74, and reverse over each other halfway between, and in an Anant chart those moments bring the transiting nodes back across the lagna and the seventh. They often coincide with turning points in self-definition and relationships, and are worth checking against the running dasha, which decides how much they bring.

Anant kaal sarp dosha remedies circulate widely, from Kaal Sarp puja at Trimbakeshwar to gemstones. Rituals performed out of faith can bring real comfort and are a personal choice; no ritual is required to live well with this axis, and the Kaal Sarp remedies guide separates what has a sound basis from what is simply sold.

Two charts with the Anant axis

A woman with Gemini rising, details altered. Rahu sits in Gemini in the lagna and Ketu in Sagittarius in the seventh, with all seven planets in houses 2 to 6, below the horizon: an ascending Anant formation. Her seventh cusp sub-lord signifies the 2nd, 7th and 11th houses. Her Moon in Hasta gave her most of the Moon’s period at birth, then Mars’s seven years, and Rahu’s eighteen from sixteen. At twenty-five, in Rahu-Mercury, with Mercury her lagna lord, she left an engineering job to write about travel. At thirty-two, in Rahu-Moon, she married a yoga teacher she had met on a retreat, the kind of partner a seventh-house Ketu often describes. At thirty-six, early in Jupiter’s Mahadasha, with Jupiter her seventh and tenth lord, her first travel book was published.

A man with Leo rising, details altered. Rahu sits in Leo in the lagna and Ketu in Aquarius in the seventh, with all seven planets in houses 8 to 12, above the horizon: a descending Anant formation. His seventh cusp sub-lord signifies the 7th but also the 6th and 12th. His Moon in Pushya left fifteen years of Saturn’s period, then Mercury’s seventeen, and Ketu’s seven from thirty-two. At twenty-eight, in Mercury-Jupiter, he went into business with a college friend. At thirty-three, in Ketu-Venus, the partnership was dissolved on good terms, as the sub-lord’s mixed signification suggested it might be. By forty, early in Venus’s Mahadasha, with Venus his tenth lord, the firm he now ran alone had doubled in size.

Both charts carry the same label, and they lived it very differently. The sub-lords, not the name of the formation, explained the difference.

Frequently asked questions

What is Anant Kaal Sarp dosha?

It is the Kaal Sarp type formed when Rahu is in the 1st house, Ketu in the 7th, and all seven planets fall on one side of the nodal axis. It puts emphasis on the axis of self and partnership.

How common is Anant Kaal Sarp dosha?

By the strict degree rule about 0.6 percent of births have a full Anant formation. Counting partial formations, as many calculators do, it appears in a little under 2 percent of charts.

Does Anant Kaal Sarp dosha delay marriage?

Not by itself. Ketu in the 7th can describe distance or an unusual partner, but marriage is promised or obstructed by the 7th cusp sub-lord’s signification of the 2-7-11 or 6-10-12 houses, and many Anant charts promise marriage clearly.

Is Anant Kaal Sarp dosha cancelled if the lagna is outside the hemming?

Some astrologers treat a lagna outside the hemmed half as a cancellation. Because Rahu shares the lagna sign in Anant charts, that happens in about half of them. Others judge only the seven planets, so it is best read as a softening rather than a guarantee.

What is the difference between ascending and descending Anant Kaal Sarp?

In the ascending form all planets lie in houses 2 to 6, below the horizon; in the descending form they lie in houses 8 to 12, above it. The two are about equally common and describe a private or a public orientation rather than better or worse fortune.

Do I need a Kaal Sarp puja for Anant type?

No ritual is required. A puja done out of faith is a personal choice and can bring peace of mind, but the practical questions of self and partnership are answered by the sub-lords and the dasha.

When does Anant Kaal Sarp dosha show its effects?

Mainly in Rahu and Ketu Mahadashas and sub-periods, and around the nodal returns near the ages of 18 or 19, 37 and 56, when the transiting nodes cross the lagna and the 7th again.
