Shankhachud Kaal Sarp dosha, which also appears as Shankachood Kaal Sarp dosha or Shankhchud, is the type with Rahu in the ninth house and Ketu in the third, and every planet in the half of the chart on one side of them. The ninth house covers belief, dharma, teachers, the father, higher learning, law, long journeys and fortune; the third covers effort, courage, skills, communication, younger siblings and short journeys. It is the reverse of Vasuki, and where Vasuki sets effort against fortune with the weight on effort, Shankhachud puts the weight on the ninth: on belief, learning, distant places and the search for meaning. In Harsha’s play Nagananda, Shankhachuda is the young serpent whom a prince saves by offering himself to Garuda in his place, a story about compassion rather than threat. This article covers what Rahu in the 9th house and Ketu in the 3rd house tend to describe, how the two sides of the axis compare, the father question, the KP checks for higher study and travel abroad, where the lagna falls, when the shankhachud kaal sarp yoga is active, and two charts from practice.
For the formation in general and why its classical standing is doubted, the place to start is the site’s Kaal Sarp guide, which the twelve-type overview complements with a short note on each. The mirror of this axis, with Rahu in the third and Ketu in the ninth, is Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha.
Conventions used. A chart qualifies only when the Sun, the Moon and all five visible planets lie inside the nodal arc by degree, following the main guide’s strict rule, and Rahu’s whole-sign house gives the type. Jagannatha Hora’s defaults apply: mean nodes and the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Shankhachud sample was taken from 260,000 Delhi birth moments drawn at random from 1950 to 2010, with planetary positions from the Swiss Ephemeris.

What Shankhachud Kaal Sarp dosha is
Rahu in the ninth house means Ketu in the third. If the seven classical planets then fall entirely within one half of the chart on either side of that axis, the modern type scheme calls the chart Shankhachud, the ninth of twelve, sometimes written Shankhachud kalsarp dosh. The type names, and the formation itself, are later additions to the tradition rather than part of Parashara’s text.
What the formation contributes, when it contributes anything, is a strong theme along the nodal axis. Rahu enlarges and pursues the ninth house, so belief, higher learning and travel become arenas of hunger and experiment; Ketu detaches from the third, so everyday effort, talk and local ties matter less to the person than they might. The result is often someone searching for meaning beyond what they were born into, and working at it quietly.
Rahu in the 9th: belief, teachers and distant places
Rahu in the 9th house tends to make a person question inherited religion and look for teachers or philosophies from elsewhere: another tradition, another country, or a modern discipline that replaces faith. Higher education abroad, law, publishing, academic research and long-distance travel are all common expressions of it. The father or the main mentors are often unconventional, ambitious or connected with foreign places. The difficulty, when there is one, is restlessness about belief or friction with orthodox authority. Rahu in the 9th house covers the placement in detail, and the ninth lord that Rahu works for in this type is described in the 9th lord in each house.
Ketu in the 3rd: quiet courage and skill
Ketu in the 3rd house tends to give courage without display. People with it act decisively when needed but feel little urge to compete or prove themselves, often have a practical or manual skill they learned largely on their own, and communicate economically, frequently writing better than they speak. Ties with younger siblings can be loose or independent rather than close. Like Rahu, Ketu is often said to do well in the growing houses, and the third is one of them. Ketu in the 3rd house describes the placement generally, and the third lord whose sign Ketu occupies here is covered in the 3rd lord in each house.
The two sides of the axis
The third and ninth houses mirror each other point for point, the everyday version of something and its larger version. The table sets the two nodes side by side across the areas the axis touches.
| Area | Rahu in the 9th tends to | Ketu in the 3rd tends to |
|---|---|---|
| Belief and conviction | Question inherited faith and seek teachings from elsewhere | Feel little need to argue or persuade others |
| Learning | Pursue higher degrees, law, philosophy or study abroad | Pick up practical skills alone and without fuss |
| Journeys | Travel far, often for study, work or pilgrimage | Care little for short trips, errands and local routine |
| Relatives | Have an unconventional or distant father or mentor | Keep independent ties with younger siblings |
| Effort and fortune | Find luck through foreign or unorthodox paths | Work steadily without advertising the effort |
The father question
Because the ninth house signifies the father, Shankhachud is often said to harm him or the relationship with him. What Rahu in the ninth more usually describes is a father who is unusual in some way: ambitious, unconventional, frequently away, from a different background, or holding views the child comes to question. The relationship can be close or distant; that is decided by the ninth lord, the Sun and the ninth cusp, not by the formation. No chart pattern predicts a parent’s illness or death, and any reading that implies it is not one to trust. The father’s significator in Jaimini astrology, described in the Pitrikaraka article, is another way the site approaches the same question.
Fortune by an unusual road
The ninth is the house of luck, and the shankhachud kaal sarp dosha effects people fear most are a life without fortune. In practice, Rahu in the ninth more often describes fortune that comes by a road less travelled: a foreign degree, a teacher from another tradition, a move across the world, an unconventional field of law or research. Those who wait for luck to arrive through family or inheritance may feel shortchanged; those who go looking for it frequently do well, because Rahu in the ninth rewards the search.
KP checks: higher study, travel and fortune
In KP each of these matters is read from its own cusp. For higher education the ninth cusp sub-lord is examined for the 4th, 9th and 11th houses, as the site’s guide to education through the 4th and 9th cusps explains; when it connects favourably to that group, study succeeds whatever the formation. Study and residence abroad bring in the 3rd, 9th and 12th houses together, covered in timing study abroad and foreign settlement through the 12th cusp. Fortune and the father are read from the ninth cusp and its lord. The nodes enter each of these judgements the way any planet does, by the houses their star lords, sign lords and companions signify.
Which charts have the lagna hemmed
Counting forward from Rahu in the ninth, the lagna comes four signs later, inside the half of the chart that the ascending form fills. When the planets run from Rahu through houses 10 to 2, the ascending form, the lagna is among them; when they occupy houses 4 to 8, the descending form, it lies outside. The Shankhachud sample split almost evenly, 51 percent ascending and 49 percent descending. Practitioners who discount the formation when the lagna escapes the hemming would therefore set aside just under half of these charts.
How rare it is, and partial charts
By the strict degree rule, a full Shankhachud formation belongs to roughly 0.6 percent of births, while programs that also report partial formations list it for nearly 2 percent of charts. In 54 percent of the sample’s Shankhachud charts a node had company in its own sign, the ninth or third, and the site classes such charts as partial, as explained in partial Kaal Sarp dosha. Take those away, along with the charts whose lagna lies outside, and the full formation with the lagna enclosed is a small subset of the charts bearing the name.
When the axis is active, and remedies
The ninth-house side tends to come forward in Rahu’s Mahadasha, with study, travel, new teachers and changes of belief. Ketu’s Mahadasha tends to bring the third-house side, a period of quieter effort, practical work and less interest in making oneself heard. The ninth and third lords activate the axis in their own periods, the node sub-periods give shorter spells of each, and the nodes’ return to the same houses by transit, roughly once in eighteen and a half years, lends extra weight to whatever the dasha then shows.
Anyone offered shankhachud kaal sarp dosha remedies should know that none is needed on the chart’s account. A ritual performed in devotion is a personal matter, and the site’s look at Kaal Sarp remedies discusses the reasoning behind the common ones. For this axis, the most natural practice is the ninth house’s own: study with a good teacher.
Two charts with the Shankhachud axis
A woman born with Gemini rising, details altered. Rahu is in Aquarius in her ninth house and Ketu in Leo in her third; all seven planets lie in houses 10 to 2, the ascending form, so the lagna is inside the hemming. Rahu works for Saturn, the lord of her eighth and ninth houses. A Rohini Moon meant seven years of the Moon’s own period and then Mars’s seven, so Rahu’s Mahadasha covered the years from fourteen to thirty-two. At twenty, in Rahu-Saturn, she went to Kathmandu to learn Tibetan, and at twenty-seven, in Rahu-Venus, her first translation of a Buddhist text was published. Jupiter’s Mahadasha opened at thirty-two, and a year later, in its first sub-period, she joined a university translation project; Jupiter rules her seventh and tenth houses. She writes far better than she speaks and turns down most invitations to lecture.
A man born with Libra rising, details altered. Rahu is in Gemini in his ninth and Ketu in Sagittarius in his third, with all seven planets in houses 4 to 8, the descending form, and the lagna outside. Rahu works for Mercury, lord of his ninth and twelfth houses, the classic pairing for long voyages, and Ketu for Jupiter, his third lord. His Moon in Shravana left nine years of the Moon’s period, then Mars’s seven, and Rahu’s Mahadasha from sixteen to thirty-four. He joined the merchant navy at nineteen, in Rahu-Jupiter, and became a chief engineer at twenty-eight, in Rahu-Venus, with Venus his lagna lord. At thirty-five, in Jupiter-Jupiter, the Mahadasha of Ketu’s sign lord, he came ashore for good and opened a marine-engine workshop in his home town, where he now trains apprentices.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shankhachud Kaal Sarp dosha?
The ninth Kaal Sarp type, also spelled Shankachood, forms with Rahu in the 9th house and Ketu in the 3rd while all the planets gather to one side. Belief, learning, the father and distant places stand on one side of it, effort, skills and siblings on the other.
Does Shankhachud Kaal Sarp dosha affect the father?
It usually describes an unusual or independent father or mentor rather than harm. The relationship is judged from the 9th lord, the Sun and the 9th cusp, and no chart pattern predicts a parent’s illness or death.
Does it block luck or fortune?
No. Rahu in the 9th tends to bring fortune through unconventional routes such as foreign study, new teachers or distant moves, and it rewards people who go looking.
How is Shankhachud different from Vasuki?
The nodes are reversed. Vasuki puts Rahu in the 3rd and emphasises effort and initiative; Shankhachud puts Rahu in the 9th and emphasises belief, learning and travel, with a quieter third house.
How common is Shankhachud Kaal Sarp dosha?
Not very. The strict test finds about one full Shankhachud chart in every 170 births, and adding partial formations brings the figure to just under 2 percent.
What are the remedies for Shankhachud Kaal Sarp dosha?
The chart asks for none. Ritual done from devotion is a personal choice, and studying with a good teacher suits this axis better than any fix aimed at the label.
When is the Shankhachud axis active?
Chiefly in Rahu’s Mahadasha for ninth-house matters and Ketu’s for the third, in the periods of the 9th and 3rd lords, and in the years when the transiting nodes cross the same two houses again.
