Mahapadma Kaal Sarp dosha puts Rahu in the sixth house and Ketu in the twelfth, with all seven planets on one side of them. The sixth is the house of rivals, disputes, debts, service, daily work and the body’s resistance to illness; the twelfth is the house of expenditure, loss, foreign places, hospitals, retreat, sleep and final release. Mahapadma, the great lotus, is one of the serpents named in the traditional lists. Of the twelve types this is the one most often described as mild, and the site’s article on Kaal Sarp cancellation cites it as perhaps the most manageable form. The reasons are worth understanding, because the mahapadma kaal sarp yoga still arrives with warnings about enemies, debts and illness. This article explains what Rahu in the 6th house and Ketu in the 12th house tend to do, how the type compares with the others that put Rahu in a growing house, the KP checks and timing, and it ends with two consultation charts.
For the formation in general and the debate over its classical standing, see the Kaal Sarp dosha guide, and for a paragraph on each type the overview of the twelve types. The reverse axis, with Rahu in the twelfth and Ketu in the sixth, is Sheshnag Kaal Sarp dosha.
Conventions used. The strict test applies throughout: each of the seven planets must lie between the nodes by degree, as the site’s main guide requires, and Rahu’s whole-sign house names the type. Jagannatha Hora defaults are followed, with mean nodes and Lahiri ayanamsa. The figures below come from the Mahapadma charts found among 260,000 simulated Delhi births, 1950 to 2010, computed with the Swiss Ephemeris.

What Mahapadma Kaal Sarp dosha is
Rahu in the sixth house always means Ketu in the twelfth. When the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn all fall in one half of the chart bounded by that line, the popular classification calls it Mahapadma, the sixth of its twelve types, also written Mahapadma kalsarp dosh. The name is modern, and the formation itself does not appear in Parashara’s text, a point the main guide discusses.
What the formation adds, in charts where it adds anything, is a concentration on the nodal axis. Here the axis joins two houses that classical astrology calls dusthanas, houses of difficulty, and a chart built around them might sound like trouble. In practice the combination often works the other way, because both nodes are in houses that suit them.
Why it is called the mildest type
Rahu is traditionally strong in the upachaya houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, which improve with effort and time, and the sixth is the house of overcoming opposition, exactly the arena where Rahu’s boldness pays. Ketu, on the other side, sits in the twelfth, the house of release and spiritual life, which many astrologers regard as Ketu’s most natural position. A malefic in a house of difficulty is also classically said to turn the difficulty against itself. Put together, Mahapadma places both nodes where their nature does the least harm and some good, and it explains why the cancellation article treats Rahu’s presence in the sixth as softening the dosha in the view of many practitioners.
Rahu in the 6th: rivals, disputes and debts
Rahu in the 6th house is one of its best-regarded positions. It tends to give an appetite for competition, resilience under pressure and an ability to outmanoeuvre opponents, which shows in competitive exams, litigation, sales, sport, and service roles that others find draining. People with it often do well in medicine, law, security, debt recovery and any field where problems are the daily material. The shadow side is a tendency to take on debt or conflict casually. Rahu in the 6th house describes the placement in full.
Rahu serves the lord of the sixth sign in this type, so the sixth lord’s condition, described in the 6th lord in each house, colours how the competitive edge shows and how debts behave.
Ketu in the 12th: letting go, going away
Ketu in the 12th house is the classic signature of an inward, renunciatory temperament. People with it often spend without much attachment to money, are drawn to meditation, retreat, charity or monastic ideas, sleep in unusual patterns, and feel at ease in foreign or remote places. It is also traditionally the placement most associated with moksha, final liberation. Ketu in the 12th house covers it in general.
In Mahapadma, Ketu stands in the twelfth lord’s sign and is read through that lord and its own star lord. The twelfth house also governs expenditure, and a weak twelfth lord can make spending the part of life that needs watching.
The four types with Rahu in a growing house
Mahapadma belongs to a small group of types in which Rahu sits in an upachaya. The site’s cancellation article names the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses as reducing the dosha, and the 10th, the fourth upachaya, is widely counted as a strong house for Rahu as well. The table compares the four.
| Type | Rahu / Ketu | Why Rahu is considered strong there | What Ketu brings on the other side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vasuki | 3rd / 9th | Initiative, courage, skill with media and selling | Independence from inherited belief and authority |
| Mahapadma | 6th / 12th | A competitive edge over rivals, disputes and obstacles | Detachment, an inward turn, ease with distance and foreign places |
| Ghatak | 10th / 4th | Ambition and public drive in the house of career | Detachment from home, roots or property |
| Vishdhar | 11th / 5th | Appetite for gains, networks and large goals | A cooler relationship with speculation, romance and self-expression |
Mahapadma stands out even in this group, because Ketu too sits in the house many astrologers regard as its most natural position.
Frequency and the two forms
A full Mahapadma formation is uncommon under the strict test, roughly one birth in 170, like the other types. Calculators that include partial formations will show it in a little under 2 percent of charts, and the births come in clusters, because the formation needs both Jupiter and Saturn on one side of the nodes.
Rahu in the sixth puts the lagna five signs behind it, which fixes which half of the chart the lagna falls in. When the formation is ascending, the planets run from Rahu through houses 7 to 11 and the lagna is outside them; in the descending form the planets fill houses 1 to 5 and the lagna is among them. The Mahapadma sample divided 45 percent ascending to 55 percent descending, so for astrologers who treat an unhemmed lagna as a cancellation, nearly half of these charts are cancelled twice over, once for the lagna and once for Rahu’s house.
Health, hospitals and what the axis does not predict
Because the sixth house is illness and the twelfth hospitalisation, the mahapadma kaal sarp dosha effects are sometimes described in alarming medical terms. Astrology cannot diagnose illness, and a Kaal Sarp formation predicts no disease. What the sixth and twelfth houses can show is timing, periods when the body needs more care and periods that support recovery, and those are read from the cusps and the dasha, as predicting recovery through the dasha explains. Rahu in the sixth is, if anything, often read as good resistance. Any health concern belongs with a doctor first.
The KP checks: 6th and 12th cusps
KP judges the matters of this axis from the cusps, whatever the formation looks like. For employment, the site’s career articles look for the sixth cusp sub-lord to signify the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses together. For disputes, the site’s article on court cases reads victory from the 1st, 6th and 11th, and defeat from the 7th, 8th and 12th. For money lent or owed, the debts and loans guide looks for the 6th, 11th and 2nd to show recovery, and the 8th or 12th to show obstacles or loss. On the twelfth side, the 12th cusp sub-lord governs expenditure, foreign residence and the spiritual inclinations of the house, with the 3rd, 9th and 12th together showing settlement abroad.
Rahu and Ketu enter these readings as significators through their sign lords, star lords and conjunctions, exactly like any planet. Where a node’s chain supports the matter, the Kaal Sarp label changes nothing; where it does not, the label is still not the reason.
When Mahapadma comes into play
The eighteen years of Rahu’s Mahadasha tend to bring the sixth-house side forward: competition, disputes, demanding service, loans taken or repaid, and a strong drive to beat obstacles. The seven years of Ketu’s Mahadasha tend to turn the person toward the twelfth: travel or residence abroad, spiritual practice, withdrawal from worldly competition, and spending that follows values rather than plans. Node sub-periods in other Mahadashas bring shorter episodes of the same themes, and the sixth and twelfth lords act on the axis in their periods. When transiting Rahu comes back to the sixth house, about every eighteen and a half years, the dasha running at that point shows how much the axis is stirred.
Partial charts and the remedy question
More than half the Mahapadma charts in the sample, 55 percent, had a planet in the sixth or twelfth sign alongside a node, which the site counts as partial (see partial Kaal Sarp dosha). Between those, the ascending charts with an unhemmed lagna, and Rahu’s favourable house, very little of the classic dosha survives in most charts carrying this label.
The mahapadma kaal sarp dosha remedies usually recommended are the same pujas, mantras and gemstones offered for every type. A ritual performed in faith is a personal matter; the chart asks for none, and the remedies review looks at what is reasoned and what is sold on fear. For this axis the useful practical attention goes to debts and spending, where Rahu and Ketu can both be casual.
Two charts with the Mahapadma axis
A man born with Virgo ascendant, details altered. Rahu is in Aquarius in his sixth house and Ketu in Leo in his twelfth, and all the planets occupy houses 7 to 11, the ascending form, so the lagna stands outside the hemming. Rahu serves Saturn, his sixth lord. His Moon in Rohini left nine years of the Moon’s period and seven of Mars’s, and Rahu’s Mahadasha ran from sixteen to thirty-four. At twenty-three, in Rahu-Saturn, he qualified as a chartered accountant and moved into insolvency work, restructuring the debts of failing companies, a sixth-house trade if ever there was one. At twenty-eight, in Rahu-Venus, he led his first large restructuring, and at thirty-five, in Jupiter-Jupiter, with Jupiter his seventh lord, he opened his own firm with a partner.
A woman born with Libra ascendant, details altered. Rahu is in Pisces in her sixth and Ketu in Virgo in her twelfth, with all seven planets in houses 1 to 5, the descending form, so the lagna is inside. Ketu serves Mercury, the lord of her ninth and twelfth houses. Her Moon in Anuradha opened with fifteen years of Saturn’s period, followed by Mercury’s seventeen and Ketu’s seven from thirty-two. She trained as a nurse, a sixth-house calling, and at twenty-five, in Mercury-Rahu, she moved abroad for work. At thirty-three, in Ketu-Venus, with Venus her lagna lord, she was made head of a hospital’s international patients department: the twelfth house of hospitals and foreign lands, reached through Ketu’s own Mahadasha.
Frequently asked questions
What is Mahapadma Kaal Sarp dosha?
The sixth Kaal Sarp type: Rahu in the 6th house and Ketu in the 12th, with every planet on one side of them. Its themes are competition, disputes, debts and service on one side and expenditure, foreign places and inner life on the other.
Is Mahapadma the mildest Kaal Sarp type?
It is often described that way. Rahu is considered strong in the 6th, an upachaya house, and Ketu is at home in the 12th, so both nodes sit where their nature causes the least trouble.
Does Mahapadma Kaal Sarp dosha cause illness or debt?
No formation causes illness, and astrology cannot diagnose. The 6th and 12th cusps can show timing, and debts are read from the 6th, 11th and 2nd against the 8th and 12th. Medical concerns belong with a doctor.
Is Mahapadma good for competitive exams or court cases?
Rahu in the 6th often gives a competitive edge. Whether a particular exam or case goes well is judged from the relevant cusps, for litigation the 1st, 6th and 11th against the 7th, 8th and 12th, and from the dasha.
What does Ketu in the 12th house bring?
Usually a detached relationship with money and possessions, an inclination toward meditation, retreat or charity, and ease in foreign or remote places. It is the placement most associated with moksha.
What are the remedies for Mahapadma Kaal Sarp dosha?
None is needed, though anyone may perform a ritual from personal faith. On this axis, keeping an eye on debts and spending does more practical good.
When is the Mahapadma axis active?
Mainly in Rahu’s periods for the 6th-house side and Ketu’s for the 12th, in the periods of the 6th and 12th lords, and when the transiting nodes return to the same two houses about every eighteen and a half years.
