Rahu and Wealth: Sudden, Foreign and Unconventional Money

Rahu’s money is the money nobody planned for. The foreign client who pays more than the domestic ones together, the industry that did not exist ten years ago, the valuation that made no sense and was paid anyway, the plot on the edge of a town that became the middle of it, the fortune from a direction the family had not known existed. It arrives at scale and by surprise, and it leaves the same way, which is the sentence every Rahu native should hear before the surge rather than after it. Rahu rules no sign and owns no house, so its money cannot be read by lordship the way the seven planets’ can; it is read through the house it occupies, through the planet that rules that sign, the dispositor, which Rahu serves as an agent, and through whatever planet sits beside it. This article reads it that way, for the twelve houses and the five conjunctions that matter for money, and it spends its second half on the question that decides every Rahu fortune, which is whether the chart can keep it.

It belongs to the complete wealth astrology guide. The windfall as a category, with Rahu as one of its doors, is in Sudden Wealth in the Chart; this page is Rahu itself, read the way Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are read elsewhere in the cluster.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha, Rahu read as the agent of its dispositor and as coloured by the planet conjunct it, with the tradition that gives Rahu aspects on the fifth, seventh and ninth from its position noted where it changes the reading. Money is tendency and timing, never figures. Nothing on this page encourages speculation or leverage of any kind, and nothing in it is financial advice.

Rahu’s money: scale, surprise and the foreign

Rahu gives money in four ways, and a Rahu fortune usually shows two of them. Through scale: Rahu does not do small, and its gains are multiples rather than increments, the business that grows ten times in three years rather than a fifth every year. Through surprise: the source nobody predicted, the industry that did not exist, the buyer from nowhere. Through the foreign: income from abroad, the foreign employer, the export, the settlement in another country, all of which Rahu governs as the planet of the unfamiliar. And through the unconventional: technology, the new medium, the trade that the native’s family thinks is not a real job, the thing that is fashionable before it is respectable. Its trades are the newest ones in any generation, and the natives with Rahu on the money houses are found in whatever the newest trade is at the time they are thirty. The other side of each of the four is the reading’s second half: scale reverses at scale, surprise runs both ways, the foreign can be left as easily as reached, and the unconventional goes out of fashion. Rahu’s money is real, and it is a season.

The dispositor rule: Rahu delivers through its sign lord

Because Rahu owns nothing, it acts as the agent of the planet that rules the sign it sits in, and the condition of that dispositor is the first thing a Rahu reading looks at. Rahu in Taurus delivers through Venus, in Gemini through Mercury, in Cancer through the Moon, and if that planet is dignified and connected to the money houses, Rahu’s scale is added to a channel that can carry it; if the dispositor is debilitated, combust or in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, Rahu’s surge has nowhere to go and becomes the reversal. Rahu in the eleventh with its dispositor exalted in the second is a Rahu fortune that is kept; Rahu in the eleventh with its dispositor debilitated in the twelfth is the same surge lost abroad. The dispositor also lends Rahu its lordship: Rahu in a sign whose lord rules the second or eleventh for the ascendant behaves, in its periods, as a money lord’s agent, and Rahu in a sign whose lord rules the twelfth behaves as expense at scale. The KP system formalises this as the node acting for its sign lord, its star lord and its conjunct planet, set out in Rahu and Ketu as agents of the sign lord, and the Parashari reading arrives at the same place by reading the dispositor first.

Rahu in the second and eleventh

Rahu in the second gives money that arrives strangely and a family that is unconventional, savings that come in surges and speech that persuades; it is the placement of the native who made money in a way the family did not understand and who spends it on appetites the family understands too well. With a strong dispositor and Jupiter’s aspect it gives the surge that is kept; with a weak one, the second house that fills and empties. Rahu in the eleventh is Rahu’s best money placement, an upachaya house in which the nodes do well, giving gains at scale, the foreign network, the wish fulfilled in a form nobody expected, and income from the newest trade of the native’s generation; its periods and Rahu’s transit over it are the classical seasons of the fortune from nowhere, and its rule is the rule of every Rahu placement, that the eleventh’s surge is converted into the second’s kind of holding before Rahu’s second half. In either house Rahu is a money planet by occupation, and the reading of how much it keeps is the reading of the dispositor and the second lord.

The third column is the whole art of reading Rahu for money: the placement says where the surge comes from, and the dispositor and the second lord say whether it stays. The individual placements are read in full on their own pages, Rahu in the fifth, the eighth, the ninth, the tenth and the twelfth being the ones most often asked about after the money houses.

Rahu with Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mercury and the Moon

Rahu takes the colour of the planet beside it, and for money five conjunctions matter. Rahu with Jupiter, the Guru Chandal combination, gives money through unconventional judgment and often through the foreign or the new: the adviser whose views are heterodox and paid for, the fortune through an institution that did not exist before; its cost is that Jupiter’s protection is compromised and the money is less safe than a plain Jupiter’s, read in the Guru Chandal guide. Rahu with Venus gives luxury at scale, the fortune in entertainment, fashion, hospitality or the foreign partner’s wealth, and appetite at scale to match. Rahu with Saturn, the Shrapit combination, gives money through the long game played in an unconventional field, land in the new town, the institution built from nothing; and it gives debt at scale, the leverage that Saturn services for twenty years, read in the Shrapit dosha guide. Rahu with Mercury is the trader at scale, the native who made money in a market that did not exist, and the schemer whose paperwork should be read twice. Rahu with the Moon gives appetite for money as security, the surge spent on feeling safe, and the public fortune, the income from a crowd, with the emotional reversal when the crowd moves on. Rahu with Mars, the Angarak combination, gives force at scale, the money taken by initiative and lost by impulse, read in the Angarak dosha guide; and the general reading of the nodes’ psychology, the appetite and the detachment that Rahu and Ketu divide between them, is in the Rahu-Ketu karmic axis.

The eighteen-year period, read as two halves

Rahu’s major period is eighteen years and it is read in two halves, because the surge and the reversal are both in it. The first half, roughly the sub-periods from Rahu-Rahu through Rahu-Mercury, is the rise: the new field entered, the scale reached, the foreign door opened, and in a chart with Rahu on a money house with a strong dispositor it is the most lucrative stretch of the life. The second half, from Rahu-Ketu onward, is the settlement and the reversal: Rahu-Ketu the release, Rahu-Venus and Rahu-Sun the years in which the fortune is enjoyed or displayed, Rahu-Moon and Rahu-Mars the years in which the crowd moves on or the impulse costs. The reading of a Rahu period therefore ends with the sentence about conversion, which is that what the first half brings should be moved into Saturn’s kind of asset before Rahu-Ketu, because Ketu’s own period follows Rahu’s in the sequence, seven years of release in which whatever is still in Rahu’s form is let go. The full period is read in the Rahu mahadasha, and Rahu’s sub-periods inside other planets’ major periods behave as a small version of the same two halves: the Rahu sub-period in a Venus or Jupiter period brings the surge, and the Ketu sub-period that follows it brings the write-off, which is why the pair is read together in Financial Loss Periods.

Rahu in transit over the money houses

Rahu spends about eighteen months in a sign, moving backwards through the zodiac, and its transits over the money houses are seasons in the same shape as its period. Rahu over the eleventh brings the surge in gains, the new source, the foreign client, in its first year, and the reversal or the reconsideration in its second; Rahu over the second brings money that arrives strangely and the appetite that spends it; over the eighth, the windfall and the shock; over the fifth, the speculation that works until it does not; over the fourth, property at scale and the title to check; over the twelfth, the foreign earning and the foreign drain. A Rahu transit fires in a period that permits it and passes in one that does not, like every transit, and its bindu filter is read from the sign lord’s Bhinnashtakavarga, since Rahu has none of its own. The transit reading that matters most is the simplest: whatever Rahu’s transit brings in its first year over a money house should be treated in its second year as a season that is ending.

Rahu’s own way of spending: appetite

Rahu spends on more: the upgrade, the newer thing, the bigger version, the purchase made because the neighbour or the stranger on the screen had it. A Rahu on the second or afflicting the second lord gives the native whose spending is an appetite rather than a decision, and whose good income disappears into a standard of living that rises exactly as fast as the income does. Rahu’s spending does not respond to thrift or to argument, since Rahu argues better than the native in the moment; it responds to a rule set in advance, in a calm month, that the native does not get to renegotiate at the point of sale. The nine spending styles, of which Rahu’s is the one that most resembles a hunger, are set out in Why Can’t I Save Money?, and the Rahu native who reads it will recognise themselves and, ideally, set the rule before the next Rahu sub-period.

The trap: leverage, and the arrangement that was not what it seemed

Rahu’s fortune has two traps, and both are Rahu’s nature applied to money. The first is leverage: because Rahu thinks in multiples, the Rahu native borrows to scale, and the borrowing works exactly as long as the surge does, so that the reversal arrives with the debt still in place; Rahu with the sixth lord, or in the sixth, or in the second with a weak dispositor, is the placement, and the rule is that Rahu’s periods are the ones in which not to borrow to grow. The second is the arrangement that was not what it seemed: Rahu is the planet of illusion as well as scale, and its money sometimes comes through the deal whose terms were not read, the scheme whose returns were too regular, the partner whose account did not exist. The native with Rahu on the second, eighth or eleventh and an afflicted Mercury should have every money document read by someone Rahu has not persuaded, and the reading should say so plainly and without accusation, since the Rahu native is usually the one who was persuaded rather than the one who persuaded. The Kaal Sarp configuration, in which all the planets lie between the nodes, sharpens both traps and is read in the Kaal Sarp dosha guide; it is not a denial of wealth, and some of the largest Rahu fortunes are found in such charts, but it is a chart in which the two halves of the Rahu period are further apart.

The Rahu fortune that stayed, and what kept it

Some Rahu fortunes last, and the charts that keep them share four things. The dispositor is dignified and connected to the second or the fourth, so that the surge has a planet to hand it to. The second lord is strong, so that the house of savings can hold what the eleventh brought. Jupiter aspects Rahu or the house it sits in, so that the judgment which Rahu lacks is supplied from outside. And the native converted, moving the surge into land, institutions and Saturn’s kind of holding while the first half of the period was still running, which the chart cannot do for them and the reading can tell them to do. A Rahu native with all four is the founder whose fortune outlived the industry that made it; with two of them, the one who kept the house and lost the rest; with none, the story the family tells about the year they were rich. The foreign settlement that so many Rahu fortunes involve, with its own timing and its own money houses, is read in full in the foreign settlement guide.

A worked contrast: two Rahus on the money houses

Two charts, particulars altered. The first is a Gemini lagna native with Rahu in Aries in the eleventh, its dispositor Mars, lord of the sixth and eleventh, exalted in Capricorn in the eighth, and Jupiter, lord of the seventh and tenth, in Sagittarius in the seventh, aspecting the eleventh. The Moon, lord of the second, is in Cancer in the second, in its own sign. Rahu on the money house, the dispositor exalted and itself the eleventh lord, Jupiter’s aspect on Rahu, and the second lord strong in the second: all four of the keeping conditions. His Rahu period, from his twenty-ninth year, took him into a technology trade that had not existed when he finished college, abroad, and the first half brought scale; the reading, given at thirty-four in Rahu-Jupiter, said to convert before Rahu-Ketu, and Rahu-Saturn was the years in which the foreign earnings became two properties at home and a deposit in the Moon’s own house, the second. Rahu-Ketu released the trade itself, the industry consolidating and his role in it ending, and it did not matter, because the second house was full. He is in Jupiter’s period now, the seventh and tenth lord in its own sign, and the money is the kind that stays.

The second is a Leo lagna native with Rahu in Virgo in the second, its dispositor Mercury, lord of the second and eleventh for Leo, debilitated in Pisces in the eighth, combust beside the Sun. Rahu on the money house, but the dispositor, which is the money planet itself for this ascendant, debilitated and burned in the house of reversals; no Jupiter aspect on the second, Jupiter sitting in Aquarius in the seventh and aspecting the eleventh, the lagna and the third; Venus, lord of the third and tenth, in Aries in the ninth. His Rahu period, from his thirty-first year, brought the surge in its first half exactly as the eleventh-house case did, a trading business in the newest commodity of his generation, grown on borrowed money, Rahu with the second and a weak Mercury being the leverage placement. The reading he was given in Rahu-Saturn said to convert and to clear the debt before Rahu-Ketu, and it was not followed, because Rahu argues better than the native. Rahu-Ketu was the reversal, the market moving on and the debt remaining, and the Ketu period that followed released what was left. He is comfortable now, in Venus’s period, the tenth lord in the ninth, on a salary abroad, and the year he was rich is a story his family tells. Two Rahus on money houses, the same surge, the same advice; one chart had a dispositor that could hold and one did not, and that, before anything the natives did, was the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rahu give wealth?

Rahu gives money at scale and by surprise, through the foreign, the new industry and the unconventional trade, and it gives it most reliably from the eleventh house, the second, the tenth and the ninth, in its own periods and under its transits over the money houses. It has no houses of its own, so it delivers through the planet that rules the sign it sits in, and a Rahu fortune is kept only when that dispositor and the second lord are strong enough to hold what Rahu brings.

Rahu in which house gives wealth?

The eleventh above all, Rahu’s best money house, gains at scale from unexpected sources; then the second for money that arrives strangely, the tenth for career at scale and fame, the ninth for fortune through the foreign, the fifth for speculative and creative gain, and the eighth for the windfall that comes with a shock. In each case the placement says where the surge comes from and the dispositor and the second lord say whether it stays.

What does Rahu in the 2nd house do to money?

It gives money that arrives strangely, savings that come in surges, an unconventional family and speech that persuades, and an appetite that spends on the same scale. With a strong dispositor and Jupiter’s aspect on the second it gives the surge that is kept; with a weak dispositor it gives the second house that fills and empties, and with a weak Mercury as well it is the placement whose money documents should be read by someone else.

Is Rahu mahadasha good for money?

Its first half, from Rahu-Rahu through Rahu-Mercury, is the rise, and in a chart with Rahu on a money house with a strong dispositor it is the most lucrative stretch of the life. Its second half, from Rahu-Ketu onward, is the settlement and the reversal, and Ketu’s own period follows it with seven years of release. The rule of every Rahu period is to move the first half’s surge into land and the durable before Rahu-Ketu.

Why does Rahu money not last?

Because Rahu’s nature is scale and surprise, and both run in reverse; because Rahu owns nothing and can only hand its money to its dispositor, which in many charts cannot hold it; because Rahu’s spending is an appetite that rises as fast as the income; and because Rahu thinks in multiples and borrows to scale, so the reversal arrives with the debt still in place. The Rahu fortune that lasts has a strong dispositor, a strong second lord, Jupiter’s aspect and a native who converted in time.

What is the dispositor of Rahu and why does it matter?

The dispositor is the planet that rules the sign Rahu sits in: Venus for Rahu in Taurus, Mercury for Rahu in Gemini, and so on. Rahu acts as that planet’s agent, delivering its houses and taking its condition, so Rahu in the eleventh with an exalted dispositor in the second is a fortune that is kept and Rahu in the eleventh with a debilitated dispositor in the twelfth is the same surge lost abroad. The dispositor is the first thing a Rahu reading looks at.

Does Rahu give money from abroad?

Yes; Rahu is the planet of the unfamiliar and governs foreign income, the foreign employer, exports and the settlement in another country, and Rahu in the twelfth, ninth, eleventh or tenth is the usual placement behind money earned abroad. Whether the foreign earning stays is the same reading as any Rahu fortune: the dispositor, the second lord and whether the earning is fixed in something durable rather than spent where it was made.
