The uniform in the chart
Mars is force, weapons, courage, the will to close with an enemy and the physical body that does it. It is the soldier’s and the policeman’s first planet, and a chart without a connected Mars does not go into uniform whatever the family tradition. Saturn is discipline, hierarchy, endurance and the long service: the parade ground, the seniority list, the thirty years. The Sun is the state, the commission, rank and command: the difference between the ranks and the officer class is, in the chart, very largely the Sun. Jupiter gives the officer’s honour, military law, the staff college and the training role. Mercury gives signals, intelligence and the technical wings. Rahu gives aviation, foreign postings, paramilitary and unconventional operations. Ketu gives the special forces, the covert work and the ordnance. The third house is courage, arms and the physical hands; it is the house of the fight as an act of will. The sixth is enemies, competition and service; it is the house of the fight as a contest, and of the examination that guards the door. The first is the body and the physique the standards require. The tenth is rank. The fourth is the homeland, which is what the police protect and what the army defends. The twelfth is the border, the foreign posting and the isolated station. The eighth is danger and the hidden, the intelligence services’ house. The eleventh is the medal and the promotion list.
The signatures of a uniformed chart
Mars connected to the sixth, the third or the tenth is where the reading begins, and Mars in the sixth, the planet of the fight in the house of enemies, is the placement of the person who defeats opponents for a living. Mars and Saturn in connection, by conjunction, aspect or exchange, with either touching the career houses, is the uniformed pair, force under discipline, and it is common in the charts of career soldiers and police. Mars and the Sun in connection give the officer: force with rank. Officer or ranks: the Sun decides
A strong Sun, dignified, in a kendra or connected to the tenth, with Mars supporting, enters as an officer: the academy, the commission, command. A weak or afflicted Sun with a strong Mars and Saturn enters the ranks and rises through service, and the honest reading says so before the family has spent three years on academy coaching. The selection board, the personality assessment that follows the written examination, is a first-house and Sun test: the body, the bearing and the authority a person carries, and a chart with a strong lagna lord and Sun does well in it while a chart with a strong Mars and a weak Sun clears the written paper and stumbles at the board, sometimes repeatedly. Selection boards and examinations, read as timing
The academy entrance, the officer examinations and the police recruitment tests are competitive examinations and are read as such: the sixth and eleventh houses for the competition and the result, the fifth and ninth for the written preparation, the first and Mars for the physical test. The attempt goes best in a sub-period of the sixth or eleventh lord, of Mars when Mars is connected to those houses, or of the Sun for the officer entries, with Jupiter transiting the sixth, tenth or lagna as the trigger. The age windows in the uniformed services are narrow, and the reading’s most useful sentence is often whether the supportive sub-period falls inside them; where it does not, the chart’s uniform expresses through the later entries, the paramilitary, the state police, or the technical branches with their own age rules. Postings, promotion and the turn from field to desk
Postings follow the houses of place. Twelfth-lord and Rahu sub-periods bring the border, the foreign mission and the isolated station; fourth-lord sub-periods bring the home posting and the cantonment near family; sixth-lord sub-periods bring active operations. Promotion in the uniformed services is Saturn’s more than any other career’s, because it runs on seniority and structure, and Saturn’s sub-periods and transits through the third, sixth and eleventh carry the promotion lists; the Sun’s sub-periods bring the command appointment and the rank that comes with it. The turn from field to desk, the point in the late thirties or forties when the body’s work becomes the staff’s, falls under Saturn’s transit of the tenth or in a Saturn sub-period, and a chart with a strong Sun and Jupiter makes the desk well while a chart with a strong Mars and a weak Sun finds it a kind of loss. Early retirement and the second career
The uniformed services release most of their people in the late thirties or forties, and the second career is a reading in itself. A strong Saturn and Mercury give the security consultant and the corporate administrator; a strong seventh gives the contractor and the businessman; Jupiter in the ninth gives the trainer and the teacher of the young; a strong fourth gives the return to the land and the family property. The dasha at the point of release says which, and the reading done a few years before retirement is the one that saves a former officer from two wasted years. Caution windows, read for care
The profession carries physical risk, and the chart is read for it in one way only: as periods in which more care is due. Sub-periods of the eighth lord, or of a malefic afflicting Mars or the lagna lord, together with Saturn’s or Ketu’s transit over the lagna or the eighth, are marked as windows for caution, the way a doctor marks a season for a check-up. They are not predictions of harm, and a reading that turns them into one has stepped outside the method and done damage. Most caution windows pass without incident, which is the point of marking them: a person who knows the window drives more carefully, trains more carefully and refuses the unnecessary risk, and the chart has done its work when nothing happens.
The uniform in the D10
Mars in a kendra of the Dasamsa, or in its tenth, or ruling its lagna, is the divisional confirmation of a uniformed career; Saturn with it gives the long service, the Sun with it the command. A D10 lagna in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn leans the same way. Rahu in the D10 third or twelfth gives the paramilitary and the aviation branches, Ketu in the D10 eighth the intelligence and special services. A worked chart: an army officer
A Capricorn lagna chart, particulars altered. Mars, lord of the fourth and eleventh, is exalted in Capricorn in the lagna, and Saturn, lord of the lagna and second, sits beside it in its own sign: Ruchaka and Shasha yogas in the same house, force and discipline in the body itself. Saturn aspects the third, the seventh and the tenth from there. The Sun, lord of the eighth, is exalted in Aries in the fourth with Mercury, lord of the sixth and ninth. Venus, lord of the tenth and fifth, is exalted in Pisces in the third. Jupiter, lord of the third and twelfth, sits in Sagittarius, its own sign, in the twelfth, with Ketu. The signatures are not subtle. Mars exalted in the lagna: the soldier’s body and the commander’s will. Mars and Saturn together: the uniformed pair. The Sun exalted, aspecting the tenth from the fourth: rank, and the homeland defended. The tenth lord exalted in the third: a profession made of courage and arms. The Sun’s major period covered his teens, the eighth lord exalted in the fourth, and its Mars sub-period, Mars exalted in the lagna, was the academy entrance and the board, cleared at the first attempt at seventeen; the reading of such a chart would have expected nothing else. What the chart does not decide
It does not decide the board, the medical or the merit list, and it should not be used to keep a young man in academy coaching whose Sun cannot carry the officer entry; the ranks are an honourable career and many charts are built for them. It does not name a regiment or a branch, only a lean. It never predicts harm, and the caution windows above are read for care and nothing else. It rests on the birth time, since the third, sixth and tenth are whole signs and a lagna one sign wrong is a different chart. And where the uniform is a family tradition and the chart carries none of it, the reading should say so kindly and early, because the third generation in khaki is not always the one the chart chose.
