Two kinds of people ask which career suits them. The student, or the parent of one, choosing a stream at seventeen with the whole market shouting. And the thirty-year-old who followed the shouting and now sits in a job that pays and does not fit, wondering whether the chart says they chose wrong. Both are used to quizzes: ten questions, a personality type, a list of professions. The chart does something different and, I think, more useful. It names the category of work a person is built for, the conditions under which they do it well, and whether the work they are in belongs to that category. It does not name a job title, and the readings that claim to are guessing.
This article gives the four-step method I use for the question in consultation, a fields-by-planet table to read the result against, the mistakes that produce wrong answers, and a worked chart. It is a spoke of the complete career astrology guide.

What “suits you” means in a chart
Suitability is where several things agree. The lagna and the Moon give the temperament that will be doing the work. The tenth house gives the work that brings standing. The third house gives the skill the native has in their hands. The sixth and seventh houses give the mode, employment or enterprise. The second and eleventh give whether the work pays. A career suits a person when the domain indicated by the tenth house matches a temperament the lagna and Moon can sustain, uses a skill the third house has, and runs in a mode the sixth or seventh supports. When those agree, the person is good at the work, likes it, and is paid for it, which is what everyone means by the question. When they disagree, the person is one or two of those things and not the third, and the reading’s job is to say which.
The four steps below establish the domain. The domain is the part the chart is confident about. Everything narrower than the domain, the specific profession, the employer, the specialisation, is decided by the person, the education and the decade, and the chart’s contribution there is to say which of the available options sits inside the domain and which outside it.
Step one: the tenth lord and its sign
Find the planet that rules the sign in the tenth house from the lagna. That planet gives the domain of the career, and the table below lists what each planet governs. Then look at the sign the tenth lord sits in, because the sign’s element refines the domain: fire signs give the energetic, leading, competitive expression of the planet, earth signs the material, structured, financial one, air signs the communicative, technical, commercial one, water signs the caring, healing, artistic and fluid one. A Mars tenth lord in a fire sign is the officer or the athlete; in an earth sign the builder or the manufacturer; in an air sign the engineer or the litigator; in a water sign the surgeon or the marine engineer. The sign’s quality adds pace: movable signs give careers with travel and change, fixed signs give institutional and durable ones, dual signs give two careers or a career that combines two fields.
The tenth lord’s house adds the field of life the career draws on, and that reading is worked through placement by placement in the tenth lord in the twelve houses. Varahamihira adds a rule that sharpens step one considerably: the specific line of work is shown by the lord of the navamsa sign the tenth lord occupies. A Mercury tenth lord in a Jupiter navamsa pulls commerce toward law, finance or teaching; the same Mercury in a Mars navamsa pulls it toward engineering or technical sales. This is the reason two people with the same tenth lord end up in different professions, and it is the step most readings skip.
Step two: the strongest planet on the tenth
A planet placed in the tenth house describes the nature of the work more directly than the tenth lord does; the lord gives the field of life, the occupant gives what the native actually does all day. When there is an occupant, its domain is read alongside the lord’s, and when the two conflict, the occupant usually describes the work and the lord the setting. When the tenth is empty, the planet aspecting it most strongly takes this role, and strength here means dignity: own sign or exaltation first, a friend’s sign next, then neutral, then enemy, then debilitated. A debilitated occupant of the tenth loses its claim to a dignified aspecting planet, and a strong occupant outranks everything else on the house.

Step three: the Amatyakaraka
Jaimini assigns the planets roles by their degree within a sign, and the planet with the second-highest degree is the Amatyakaraka, the minister, the significator of the work a person is equipped to do. Where the tenth house describes the career the world gives, the Amatyakaraka describes the worker: the temperament, the skill, the kind of role that feels natural whatever the title says. A Sun Amatyakaraka is built for administration and authority, a Moon for the public and for care, Mars for technical and forceful work, Mercury for commerce and analysis, Jupiter for knowledge and counsel, Venus for the arts and for relationship-based work, Saturn for structure and persistence. When the Amatyakaraka agrees with the planet from step one or step two, the domain is confirmed from a second direction, and that agreement is what makes a career reading secure rather than plausible.

Step four: the D10 lagna
The Dasamsa is the divisional chart of career, and its lagna is the professional persona: how the native appears at work and what the work makes of them. The D10 lagna’s sign and lord are read like a tenth lord, by planet and element, and planets in the D10 kendras are the planets that will actually shape the profession. When the D10 lagna lord is the same planet as the tenth lord, or the Amatyakaraka, or the strongest planet on the tenth, the four steps have converged and the domain is settled. When the D10 points elsewhere, it usually describes the work the native ends up in through circumstance rather than choice, and the difference between the two is worth knowing. Putting the four together
Four steps produce up to four planets. When they agree, or three of four do, the domain is clear and the reading can be specific about the category and confident about it. When they split two and two, the chart describes a person with two domains, and the usual outcomes are a career that combines them, a dual career, or a change of field partway through life when the dasha moves from one planet to the other. When they scatter, the chart is not strongly built for any one category, and the honest reading says so and works from the sixth and seventh houses instead, on the question of mode rather than field, which is covered in Job or Business?.
The tie-break, in every case, is the dasha. Of the candidate planets, the one whose major or sub-periods cover the working years is the one whose domain expresses first, and a chart with a Jupiter tenth lord and a Mars Amatyakaraka lives a Mars career if the Mars periods fall in the twenties and thirties and a Jupiter career if they do not. Suitability is what the chart is built for; the dasha is when each part of the build is available. The two questions are separate and should be answered separately.

Read the planet found in steps one to four against the element of its sign. The cells are examples of the category, not a list of permitted jobs.

The four mistakes that produce wrong answers
The first is reading career from the Sun sign, which is a Western convenience with no standing in Parashari practice. The Sun’s sign describes the native’s sense of authority, not their work.
The second is reading the lagna sign alone, as if Aries rising made everyone a soldier. The lagna gives temperament and is the frame from which the tenth is counted. It is not the career.
The third is taking the strongest planet in the chart regardless of its connection to the career houses. An exalted Jupiter in the fifth house gives a philosophical mind and good children; it does not give a Jupiter career unless it touches the tenth, the tenth lord or the lagna. The four-connection test in the planet-by-planet article is the guard against this mistake, and it is the commonest mistake of all.
The fourth is skipping the D10, which is what separates the career the native is built for from the one they will actually be seen in. Readings that stop at the rashi chart are right about the domain and wrong about the expression surprisingly often.
When the chart and the current job disagree
The thirty-year-old in the wrong field is not told to resign. The reading establishes the domain first, and then asks whether the current job can be moved toward the domain from inside: the accountant with a Venus chart who moves into a design firm’s finance function, the engineer with a Jupiter chart who moves into training, the salesperson with a Ketu chart who moves into research and analysis. Most careers can be steered into their domain without being abandoned, and the periods in which to steer are the periods of the domain planet, read from the dasha table. A worked chart
A Leo lagna chart, identifying detail removed. For this lagna Venus rules the tenth and third, Saturn rules the sixth and seventh, Mercury rules the second and eleventh, Mars rules the fourth and ninth, Jupiter the fifth and eighth, the Moon the twelfth, the Sun the lagna. Venus, the tenth lord, is exalted in Pisces in the eighth. The Moon is exalted in Taurus in the tenth. The Sun, Mercury and Saturn sit together in Aquarius in the seventh, Saturn in its own sign. Jupiter is in Sagittarius, its own sign, in the fifth. Mars is exalted in Capricorn in the sixth. Rahu is in Libra in the third, Ketu in Aries in the ninth. By degree, Venus is the Amatyakaraka. The D10 lagna is Libra, ruled by Venus, with the Moon in a D10 kendra.
He was twenty-nine and in a bank, where his family had placed him, and asked whether the chart agreed with the choice. Step one: the tenth lord is Venus, in a water sign, exalted, in the eighth. Venus in water is arts, beauty and wellness, hospitality service; the eighth house adds depth and a career with an interruption or a hidden phase in it. Step two: the occupant of the tenth is an exalted Moon, the strongest planet on the house, and the Moon in an earth sign is food, hospitality, retail, the public served in material ways. Step three: the Amatyakaraka is Venus. Step four: the D10 lagna is Venus’s sign with the Moon in a kendra. Four steps, two planets, one domain: hospitality, food, wellness, the public served with care and taste. Not banking.
Why, then, was banking working at all? The seventh house explained it. Saturn, the sixth lord, in its own sign with Mercury, the second and eleventh lord, and the Sun: employment in a structured financial organisation, in partnership with authority, paying well. The mode was right and the domain was wrong, which is the exact shape of a job that pays and does not fit. Rahu in the third, Venus’s other house, added an appetite for a skill in communication and media that the bank had no use for.
The tie-break was the dasha. His Moon major period was due to begin at thirty-one, ten years of the exalted planet in his tenth house, and the reading placed the move inside its first two sub-periods. He did not resign into a café. He moved, in the Moon’s own sub-period, into the finance function of a hospitality group, which used the Saturn-Mercury mode to enter the Venus-Moon domain, and two years later into operations in the same group, which is where the exalted Moon in the tenth had been pointing. The bank had never been wrong for him as a mode. It had been the wrong domain, and the chart said so in four steps.
What the method cannot do
It names a category, not a job, and the category is wide. It cannot rank professions by income or prestige; the second and eleventh houses say whether the native’s work pays, not which work pays most. It cannot see the family’s circumstances, the local economy, or the cost of retraining, all of which are legitimate reasons to stay in a mode that works while steering toward the domain. It depends on the birth time, since the tenth house is a whole sign and a lagna error of one sign changes the tenth lord and everything downstream; where the four steps contradict a life as lived, rectification comes before advice. And it should never be used to tell a seventeen-year-old that one profession is closed to them. Domains are wide, and the quiz-style certainty that lists ten allowed jobs is exactly what this method exists to replace.

Is career decided by the Moon sign or the ascendant?
By neither sign on its own. The ascendant gives the temperament and is the frame from which the tenth house is counted; the Moon sign gives a second frame, and the tenth from the Moon is read alongside the tenth from the lagna. The career itself is read from the tenth house, its lord, its occupants, the Amatyakaraka and the D10, not from the sign of the lagna or the Moon.
What is the Amatyakaraka’s role in choosing a career?

Establish the domain first, then ask whether the current job can be steered toward it from inside: the same skills applied within an organisation or a function that belongs to the domain. Most careers can be steered rather than abandoned, and the periods to steer in are the periods of the domain planet in the dasha table. A full change of field is timed separately, and a mismatch that has produced years without movement has its own reading.
