People who ask about business yogas have usually been told they have a Raj yoga, or have not, and are trying to work out what that means for the shop, the factory, the agency or the app they want to build. The first thing to say is that Raj yoga is the wrong yoga to look for. Raj yoga gives status and authority, and it gives them to salaried people as readily as to founders. A business is a different thing in the chart. It is built from the seventh house, where the customers and partners live, the second and eleventh, where the capital and the income live, and the third, where the initiative lives, held together by the planets of trade. This article sets out what a chart needs for a venture to succeed, which combinations deliver, which conditions cancel them, and why a perfectly good business yoga can sit unused for twenty years.

Why Raj yoga is the wrong yoga to look for
A Raj yoga forms when the lords of the angular and trinal houses combine, and what it gives is standing: authority, recognition, a position the world respects. It is a fine thing to have and it is indifferent to the mode of work. The district collector and the company founder can hold the same Raj yoga; one expresses it through the state and the other through the market. A chart with a strong Raj yoga and a weak seventh house produces a respected employee, and a chart with no Raj yoga and a strong seventh, second and eleventh produces a wealthy trader nobody has heard of. When the question is business, the yogas to look for are the ones that join customers to income, and those are built from different houses.
The houses a business needs
The seventh house is the business itself: the customer, the client, the partner, the public the native deals with, and trade as an activity. It is the tenth from the tenth, and classical authors read it for commerce for that reason. A business without a strong seventh house has no customers, however good the product.
The second house is capital and accumulation, what the business keeps. The eleventh is income, gains, the network and the fulfilment of the venture’s purpose, what the business earns. The two together are the wealth houses, and a connection between their lords is the Dhana yoga that every business chart needs in some form. The third house is initiative, effort, courage and the hands, and it is the difference between the person who talks about a business and the person who opens one. The tenth is reputation and standing, the name the business builds. The fifth is judgment and speculation, the ninth is fortune and expansion, the fourth is premises, land and vehicles. The sixth in a business chart is credit and competition, since debt in a venture is working capital rather than a burden. The eighth and twelfth are the channels of loss, and their lords’ connections to the wealth houses say where the money leaks.
The planets of trade
Mercury is the natural planet of trade: buying and selling, calculation, negotiation, the contract and the ledger. A dignified Mercury in a kendra forms Bhadra yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas, and it is the classic merchant’s signature. Mars gives competition, drive and the willingness to fight for a market; dignified in a kendra it forms Ruchaka yoga, the signature of the person who builds by force of will. Rahu gives scale, foreign markets and the unconventional, and it is the planet behind the venture that grows past anything the family expected. The Sun gives the founder whose name is the brand. Venus gives trade in goods of pleasure, beauty and comfort, and dignified in a kendra forms Malavya yoga. Jupiter gives finance, advisory and the business built on trust, and forms Hamsa yoga in a kendra. Saturn gives manufacturing, contracting and the durable business built over decades, forming Shasha yoga when dignified in a kendra. The Moon gives the mass market, goods the public buys daily, and the sensitivity to what the public wants. Ten business combinations worth taking seriously
Lists of business yogas run long online. These are the ten I see delivering in the charts of people who actually run things. One is an indication, two a lean, three or more a chart built for enterprise.
- The seventh lord connected to the eleventh lord by conjunction, aspect, exchange or placement in each other’s houses. Customers joined to income. This is the core business combination, and it outranks the rest.
- The seventh lord in the tenth, or the tenth lord in the seventh. Trade as the native’s public identity; the merchant who becomes a name.
- A Dhana yoga between the second and eleventh lords in which the seventh lord also participates. Capital, income and customers in one combination.
- A strong third lord, or Mars or the Sun in the third. The initiative to start and the stomach for the first three years.
- Mercury dignified in a kendra, or Mercury connected to the seventh or eleventh. The trader’s mind, and the Bhadra yoga in its full form.
- Rahu in the seventh, tenth or eleventh, well disposed, with a benefic aspect or a strong dispositor. Scale and foreign markets; Rahu in the seventh in particular gives the foreign customer and the unconventional partner.
- Moon and Mars together or in mutual aspect, Chandra-Mangal yoga, the classical combination for wealth through enterprise and quick dealing.
- Jupiter and the Moon in mutual kendras, Gaja-Kesari yoga, giving the public trust and the reputation a business grows on.
- The lagna lord and the seventh lord both strong, or connected. The self and the other party in balance, the native who can deal.
- The eleventh lord in the eleventh, the second or the seventh, dignified. Income that arrives through its own house or through customers.
Two reversal combinations belong on the list as footnotes. Vipreet Raj yoga, formed by the lords of the sixth, eighth and twelfth in each other’s houses, gives the business that rises out of a crisis, a debt or a loss, and Neecha Bhanga, the cancelled debilitation, gives the venture that succeeds after a failure that looked final. Both produce founders, and both produce them late.
The conditions that decide whether they deliver
The seventh lord’s dignity is the first condition. A debilitated or combust seventh lord gives customers who do not pay, partners who leave, and a public that does not return, whatever the wealth houses say. The eleventh lord’s dignity is the second: a weak eleventh gives a business that runs and does not earn.
The eighth and twelfth lords are the third. When either is connected to the second, seventh or eleventh lord, the money leaks through the channel that lord governs: sudden losses and litigation for the eighth, expenses, foreign dealings and bad debts for the twelfth. A leak is not a denial; it is a place to put controls.
Mercury’s condition is the fourth, because contracts and calculation run through Mercury. A combust or afflicted Mercury gives the business that is right about the product and wrong about the paperwork. Saturn afflicting the second or eleventh is the fifth: cash arrives slowly, receivables stretch, growth is real and grinding.
The sixth house is the sixth condition, read for credit. A strong sixth lord connected to the eleventh gives the business that uses borrowed capital well; a strong sixth without the eleventh gives the business that is always servicing debt. Daridra yoga, the eleventh lord in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, is the counterweight that a business reading has to check for, because it takes back what the other combinations give unless its own cancellation conditions are met.
The D10 is the last condition. The seventh and eleventh houses of the D10, and the planets in its kendras, confirm or withhold the business the rashi chart offers, and a strong rashi combination with a weak D10 seventh produces the person who runs a business and remains, in the world’s eyes, an employee of it. What kind of business, planet by planet
The planet that dominates the seventh and eleventh says the kind of venture. Mercury gives distribution, retail, brokerage, consultancy, software and anything bought and sold. Mars gives construction, real estate, manufacturing, engineering firms, security and sport. Saturn gives contracting, heavy manufacturing, agriculture, logistics and the family business in its third generation. Venus gives hospitality, fashion, design, cosmetics, vehicles, jewellery and entertainment. Jupiter gives finance, advisory, education and publishing, and its ventures are closer to practices than to companies. The Sun gives the founder-led firm in any field, with the name over the door. Rahu gives the export house, the online business, the venture in a field that is five years old. The Moon gives food, consumer goods, retail chains and anything the public buys weekly. Ketu gives the niche business built on a depth nobody else has. The yoga that sits unused until its dasha
A business combination in the chart is a promise, and it delivers in the periods of the planets that form it. A seventh-lord-to-eleventh-lord connection fires in the major or sub-periods of those two lords, or of a planet placed in the seventh or eleventh, and it does not fire in the periods of the sixth lord, however strong the combination looks. This is why so many people carry a fine business chart through twenty years of salaried work: the dasha has been elsewhere, and the combination has been waiting. It is also why a venture started in the wrong period behaves like a job, with one or two large clients dictating terms, and why the same idea launched in the right period grows. The timing of the switch from employment into the venture, with its transit triggers, is in Job or Business?; here the point is that the yoga’s presence and the yoga’s activation are two different readings, and the second matters more to a person deciding when to start.
Jupiter’s transit over the seventh or the eleventh house, inside a supportive period, is the year the combination shows itself. Saturn’s transit over the same points, inside a supportive period, is the year it acquires structure, staff and premises. In a non-supportive period the same transits bring the idea and the frustration, and nothing else.
Partnerships and the seventh house
The seventh house is the partner as well as the customer, and its lord’s nature says what kind of partner the native attracts and needs. A Saturn seventh lord gives the older, institutional or slow partner and a partnership that lasts; a Mercury seventh lord gives the partner who handles the numbers; a Mars seventh lord gives the competitive partner and the partnership that fights; a Venus seventh lord gives the partner who handles people; a Rahu in the seventh gives the foreign or unconventional partner and the partnership that scales and then has to be renegotiated. An afflicted seventh, with its lord in the eighth or twelfth or combust, is the chart that should not take a partner at all and should structure the venture around the third and eleventh houses instead. The channels of loss
Every business chart has a channel of loss, and reading it is more useful than reading the yogas, because the yogas will look after themselves and the leak will not. The eighth lord connected to the wealth houses gives sudden loss, litigation, the partner who walks with the money, and the reading says to hold reserves and to paper every agreement. The twelfth lord connected to them gives the slow leak, expenses, bad debts, foreign dealings that cost more than they earn, and the reading says to control receivables and to be careful abroad. Saturn on the second gives the cash-flow squeeze. Rahu on the second gives the overreach into a market or a loan the business cannot carry. Mars on the eleventh gives income spent as fast as it arrives. None of these denies the business. They are the places the founder should look every quarter, and the periods of the lords involved are the quarters to look hardest.
A worked chart
An Aquarius lagna chart, identifying detail removed. For this lagna Jupiter rules both the second and the eleventh, the two wealth houses, and sits in Sagittarius, its own sign, in the eleventh, aspecting the third and the seventh. The Sun, lord of the seventh, sits in Scorpio in the tenth with Mars, lord of the third and tenth, in its own sign. Saturn, the lagna lord, is in Aquarius in the lagna, its own sign, aspecting the third, seventh and tenth. Venus, lord of the fourth and ninth, is in Libra, its own sign, in the ninth, with Mercury, lord of the fifth and eighth. The Moon, lord of the sixth, is exalted in Taurus in the fourth, in mutual aspect with Mars. Rahu is in Leo in the seventh, Ketu in Aquarius in the lagna with Saturn.
Count the combinations. The seventh lord in the tenth with the third and tenth lord: trade as identity, with initiative and status in one place. The second-and-eleventh lord in its own sign in the eleventh, aspecting the seventh: a Dhana yoga with the customers’ house under its aspect. Mars in its own sign in a kendra: Ruchaka yoga, the builder by will. The Moon and Mars in mutual aspect: the aspect form of Chandra-Mangal. Rahu in the seventh: foreign customers and scale. A lagna lord in its own sign in the lagna: the self strong enough to deal. Five or six of the ten, which is a chart built for enterprise, and a Mars-and-Saturn chart, which means manufacturing.
The conditions. Mercury, the eighth lord, sits with Venus in the ninth, which puts a channel of loss on the fortune house: the reading marked contracts and foreign receivables as the leak. The D10 placed the Sun and Mars in its kendras. Nothing cancelled the combinations.
He spent his twenties and early thirties in a salaried job, through the Moon’s major period, the sixth lord’s, exalted, in the fourth. The business combinations were all there and did nothing, because the sixth lord’s period expresses service, and the honest reading of his chart at twenty-five would have said: not yet. Mars’s major period began at thirty-three, the third and tenth lord’s, own sign, with the seventh lord. He left to start a components manufacturing unit in Mars’s own sub-period. Mars-Rahu brought the first export order, Rahu in the seventh doing what Rahu in the seventh does. Mars-Jupiter, the wealth lord’s sub-period, brought the first real profit. Mars-Mercury, the eighth lord’s, brought a contract dispute with a foreign buyer and a bad debt, the leak the reading had marked, which he survived because the reserves were there. Rahu’s major period followed, eighteen years of the planet in his seventh house, and the business became export-led and grew past anything the family had run before, with Jupiter’s transits over his seventh and eleventh marking the years of expansion. Jupiter’s own period, the wealth lord’s, arrives late in his fifties and is the consolidation the chart holds in reserve.
The combinations were identical at twenty-five and at thirty-three. The period was different, and that is the whole of the lesson.
What the reading cannot do
It does not guarantee profit, and no combination in any chart does. It says the chart is built for enterprise, in what kind, with what leak, and in which periods the build is available. It cannot see the market, the capital, the competition or the product, and a supportive period with none of those is a good time to plan rather than to borrow. It cannot size the business; the strength of the second and eleventh houses says whether the venture pays, not whether it pays a lot. It depends on the birth time, since the seventh, second, eleventh and third are whole signs and a lagna error of one sign changes which lords form which combinations. And it should not be used to push a salaried native with a business chart into a venture in the wrong period; the chart that says “yes, later” is the chart most often misread as “yes, now”.
