The person asking about government job yoga has usually already sat the exam, often more than once. The question underneath is whether the effort is going somewhere, and whether the next attempt is worth the year it will cost. That deserves a straight answer, and the straight answer has three parts: which combinations in a chart point to state service, which conditions decide whether a combination will actually deliver, and which years are the ones in which it can. A yoga is a combination of planets. It is not a promise, and the honest reading treats it as a set of probabilities that the dasha and the exam calendar have to agree with.

What “government” is in the chart
Two planets carry the state. The Sun is authority, office and the king in the old texts, which in a modern chart means the government in all its forms: the ministry, the department, the commission, the public institution. A Sun connected to the career houses gives work that carries the authority of the state, and its dignity says how comfortably that authority sits. Saturn is service, the machinery of administration, and the long discipline of a career inside a structure. Saturn is what makes a government job a job rather than an office: the rules, the cadre, the seniority list, the pension. The Sun without Saturn gives the authority of the state without its stability, which is closer to politics. Saturn without the Sun gives service without the state, which is the large private organisation. The two together, connected to the tenth house, is the core signature.
Three houses carry the process. The sixth house is competition and service; every competitive examination is a sixth-house event, and a strong sixth lord is what lets a person sit an exam five times without breaking. The tenth house is the office itself, the post and its standing. The eleventh house is success in competition and the fulfilment of the wish, and the appointment letter, as distinct from the result, is an eleventh-house matter. The ninth house adds a fourth voice in the older tradition, where royal favour was read from the ninth, and a tenth lord in the ninth, or a Sun in the ninth aspecting the lagna, still has that flavour of the state smiling on the native.
Other planets colour the service without defining it. Mars gives the uniformed services and engineering departments. Jupiter gives the judiciary, education, finance and the ministries of counsel. Mercury gives the clerical, accounts, railways, banking and communications side. The Moon gives public-facing and welfare departments. The ten combinations worth taking seriously
Government job combinations are listed online by the dozen, and most of the lists are padding. The following ten are the ones I have seen deliver repeatedly in charts of people in state service. They compound: one is an indication, two are a lean, three or more are a chart that is built for it.
- The Sun in the tenth house. This is the plainest signature of authority through work, and the Sun in the tenth in a friendly or own sign is the single placement most often found in the charts of officers. In an enemy sign or afflicted it still gives the connection, with the conditions described below.
- The Sun and Saturn both connected to the tenth house or its lord: both placed there, one placed and the other aspecting, or both conjunct the tenth lord. They are enemies by nature, and the combination is often misread as a conflict. In career terms it is the state and its machinery in one place, and it is the strongest of the ten.
- The Sun as tenth lord, dignified, in a kendra or trikona. For Scorpio lagna the Sun rules the tenth directly, and a strong Sun for that lagna is a government signature in itself.
- The tenth lord in the sixth house, or the sixth lord in the tenth, with the Sun aspecting or joining either. Service that reaches office, under the state.
- An exchange, conjunction or mutual aspect between the lagna lord, the sixth lord and the tenth lord, with the Sun involved in any of the three. The self, competition and office tied together.
- A Raj yoga between kendra and trikona lords in which the Sun or the tenth lord participates. Office with authority rather than office with a desk.
- The Sun aspected by Jupiter, or the Sun and Jupiter connected to the tenth. Government service in the judiciary, education, finance or a ministry of counsel, and the combination that most often produces the senior administrator.
- The Sun and Mars connected to the tenth, or Mars in the sixth with the Sun in the tenth. The uniformed services, engineering departments and enforcement, treated on their own page for defence and police careers.
- The eleventh lord connected to the Sun or to the tenth lord, with a strong sixth lord. This is the competition-clearing combination, and without it the others produce a person who is suited to the state but never gets through the door.
- The Sun or Saturn in a kendra of the D10 chart, or the D10 lagna lord being the Sun or Saturn. The divisional confirmation, which turns a rashi-chart indication into a working prediction.
Two things that are not on the list. Saturn in the tenth house on its own is not a government yoga; it is a long-career signature that expresses through the state only when the Sun is also involved. And the Sun in the lagna on its own gives a person who carries authority in their manner, which is common in officers but also in people who never work for the government at all.
The conditions that decide whether a combination fires
A combination present in the chart delivers under conditions, and the conditions are where most readings go wrong.
The Sun’s dignity comes first. The Sun in Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, or in a friend’s sign, gives the state’s authority easily. The Sun in Libra is debilitated, and a debilitated Sun connected to the tenth gives the connection with difficulty: late selection, a lower cadre than the effort deserved, or a career spent seeking the favour of superiors. Debilitation cancels under the usual rules, and a cancelled debilitation delivers.
The Sun’s affliction by the nodes comes second. The Sun conjunct Rahu or Ketu within a few degrees is an eclipsed Sun, and an eclipsed Sun connected to the tenth gives authority undermined: the post is obtained and then contested, transferred, or held under a cloud. It does not deny the job.
Saturn’s condition comes third. A debilitated Saturn in Aries, or a Saturn in the eighth or twelfth without other support, gives service with delay and obscurity: the remote posting, the department nobody wants, the promotion that comes years late. Again, the job comes; its quality suffers.
The sixth lord’s strength decides the exam. A weak sixth lord produces a person who cannot compete, whatever the tenth house says, and the honest advice for such a chart is lateral entry, a state board, or a public sector role obtained through qualification rather than open competition.
The lagna lord’s strength decides endurance. Competitive examinations are a war of attrition, and a weak lagna lord gives up after the second attempt. This is worth saying plainly to families, who often push a native whose chart cannot take the punishment.
The eleventh house decides the result. A yoga without a supported eleventh house gives the interview call and not the appointment.
And the D10 confirms or withholds. A rashi chart full of Sun-and-tenth connections with a Sun debilitated in the D10 and no planet in the D10 kendras produces the person who is suited to authority, dresses like an officer, and works in the private sector. Which kind of service: uniformed, administrative, technical, public sector
The planet accompanying the Sun says which department. Sun with Saturn gives administration, revenue, the secretariat and the long clerical-to-officer path. Sun with Jupiter gives the judiciary, education, finance, and the higher civil services, treated in Civil Services in the Chart. Sun with Mars gives the army, police, paramilitary and engineering departments. Sun with Mercury gives banking, railways, accounts, communications and the public sector undertakings. Sun with the Moon gives public welfare, health administration and the departments that deal directly with citizens. Sun with Venus gives the cultural, tourism and hospitality side of the state. Sun with Rahu gives foreign service, aviation, and the technical wings that did not exist in the old texts.
Public sector undertakings and nationalised banks sit between government and private in the chart. They show as the Sun connected to the tenth with Mercury or Saturn, but with the sixth house stronger than the ninth: service under the state’s ownership rather than the state’s authority. Many charts that lack a full government yoga carry this one, and for them a PSU or bank is the natural expression of the Sun. Timing the exam and the appointment
The combinations say the chart is suited to the state. The dasha says when the door is open, and for competitive examinations the two have to agree within the age window the rules allow.
The periods that bring selection are those of the Sun, of Saturn when connected to the tenth, of the sixth lord, the tenth lord and the eleventh lord, and of any planet placed in the sixth, tenth or eleventh. A sub-period of one of these inside a major period of another is the strongest window. The result of the examination tends to fall in a sixth-lord or eleventh-lord sub-period; the appointment and joining fall in a tenth-lord or eleventh-lord sub-period, sometimes the next one along. An attempt made in a sub-period with no connection to these houses typically clears the preliminary stage and fails at the mains or the interview, and this pattern, two or three near misses followed by success when the sequence changes, is the commonest exam history I see.
The transit trigger is Jupiter over the tenth or eleventh house, or over the natal Sun, together with Saturn transiting the sixth, tenth or eleventh from the lagna or the Moon. Saturn’s transit over the natal Sun or over the tenth house is a heavy year for the native, and it is also, strangely often, the year the appointment comes, because Saturn’s transit over the state’s planet is the state’s machinery taking hold of the life. The Sun’s monthly transit through the tenth or eleventh dates the result within the sub-period.
The age limit is the hard constraint. When the supportive sub-periods arrive after the window closes, the yoga expresses through the routes that remain: state boards, public sector undertakings, lateral entry, contractual posts that convert. A reading that knows the exam calendar can say whether the sequence lands inside the window, and that is the most useful thing it can say to an aspirant weighing another year. When the yoga is present and the job is not
Charts with clear government combinations belong to people in the private sector, and there are five usual reasons. The supportive dasha fell outside the age window, and the Sun expressed as authority in a company instead. The sixth lord was too weak to clear open competition, and no alternative route was tried. The Sun was eclipsed by a node or debilitated without cancellation, and the selection came with a posting the native refused. The D10 withheld what the rashi chart offered. Or, most simply, the native never sat the exam, and the yoga stayed a description of a temperament. None of these is a failure of the chart. A yoga describes a suitability and a probability. The person still has to walk through the door in the years it is open.
A worked chart
An Aries lagna chart, identifying detail removed. For this lagna Saturn rules both the tenth (Capricorn) and the eleventh (Aquarius), Mercury rules the sixth (Virgo) and the third, the Sun rules the fifth, Jupiter the ninth and twelfth, Mars the lagna and the eighth, Venus the second and seventh. The Sun, Saturn and Mercury sit together in Capricorn in the tenth, Saturn in its own sign. Venus is in Aquarius in the eleventh. Jupiter is in Leo in the fifth, aspecting the lagna and the eleventh. Mars is in Scorpio in the eighth, its own sign. The Moon is exalted in Taurus in the second. Rahu is in Gemini in the third, Ketu in Sagittarius in the ninth.
Count the combinations. The Sun in the tenth: one. The Sun and Saturn together in the tenth, Saturn as tenth and eleventh lord in its own sign: two, and the strongest of the ten. The sixth lord Mercury in the tenth with the Sun: three. The eleventh lord Saturn conjunct the Sun: four, the competition-clearing one. Jupiter’s aspect on the eleventh and on the lagna, the lagna lord strong in its own sign: the endurance and the result house supported. Sun with Saturn and Mercury says administrative, revenue, or the accounts-and-audit side of the state rather than the uniformed side.
The conditions. The Sun in Capricorn is in the sign of its enemy, and it sits with that enemy, which in this chart meant a father in a subordinate government post and a native who resented the state before he joined it. Not a denial; a texture. The D10 placed the Sun in a kendra, which settled the question of whether the combination would express through the state at all.
The timing. Mars’s major period, the lagna lord’s, covered his engineering degree and a private job, and two attempts at the state public service commission: the first in Mars-Rahu, Rahu holding no connection to the sixth, tenth or eleventh, which ended at the mains; the second in Mars-Jupiter, Jupiter aspecting the eleventh, which reached the interview and stopped there, the near miss the pattern predicts. Rahu’s major period began in his mid-twenties, and the reading at that point said the Saturn sub-period, the tenth and eleventh lord’s, own sign, conjunct the Sun, was the window, and that it fell at thirty, inside the age limit with two years to spare. He was selected in the third attempt, in the first months of Rahu-Saturn, while Saturn was transiting his tenth house over the natal Sun, the Saturn return, and Jupiter was moving through his eleventh. He is in the state revenue service. The chart said the state; the sub-period said thirty; the exam calendar allowed it. All three had to hold.
What this reading cannot do
It cannot promise a post. It identifies a suitability, the conditions on it, and the years in which the probability is highest. It cannot see the number of vacancies, the reservation category, the cut-off, or the examiner. It cannot extend an age limit. It depends on the birth time, since the Sun’s house and the lords of the sixth, tenth and eleventh all move if the lagna is wrong by a sign, and the difference between a Sun in the tenth and a Sun in the eleventh is the difference between an officer and a person who does well in competitions of another kind. And it should never be used to tell a family that a native who has failed three times is destined to succeed on the fourth; it can say whether the fourth attempt falls in a supportive window, and if it does not, that is the more useful thing to know.
