The teacher’s planets and houses
Jupiter is the guru: knowledge held and given, the teacher who shapes rather than informs, the professor, the counsellor, the person people come to for understanding. Mercury is explanation: the subject transmitted clearly, the lesson planned, the schoolteacher’s craft and the lecturer’s clarity. Between them they cover the whole profession, and the ratio between them in a chart says whether the native teaches by presence or by method.
Ketu gives research, the scholar’s solitude and the depth that finds what the field missed. Saturn gives the institution, tenure, the long doctorate and the administration of a college. The Sun gives the principal, the head of department, the chair. The Moon gives the primary teacher and the classroom’s mood, the one who teaches children. Venus gives the arts, music, dance and languages taught. Mars gives physical education, engineering teaching, and the coaching that prepares students for competition. The fifth house is students: the classroom, the intelligence that is taught with, and the pupils who are, in the old reading, the teacher’s children. The ninth is higher learning and the guru himself, the university, the doctorate. The fourth is the institution and formal education, the school as a building and a body. The second is the lecturing voice. The third is writing and communication. The tenth is the profession, the eighth is research into what is hidden, and the twelfth is the foreign university and the study one works alone in.
The signatures of a teaching chart
Jupiter connected to the fifth, the ninth or the tenth is the primary signature, and Jupiter in the fifth or ninth in dignity is close to a definition of the teacher. Mercury connected to the second, third or fifth gives the explaining voice. The fifth lord and the ninth lord in exchange, conjunction or mutual aspect is the classical teacher’s combination, the pupil’s house and the guru’s house bound together, and it appears in professors’ charts far beyond chance. Four kinds of teacher
The school teacher is Mercury and the Moon through the fourth and fifth: method, patience, children, the institution. The college and university teacher is Jupiter through the ninth, with the second for the lecture and the eighth or Ketu if research is part of it. The coach and the corporate trainer is Mercury with Mars through the third and eleventh: skill transmitted fast, for a fee, toward a result, and this is the teaching that pays best and lasts least. The researcher is Ketu and Saturn through the eighth and twelfth, teaching as a by-product of inquiry. A fifth kind sits outside the profession: the spiritual teacher, Jupiter with Ketu through the ninth and twelfth, who is read from a different set of houses and is not this article’s subject. Most teaching charts carry two of the four, and the dasha sets which comes first.
PhD or job: the consultation at twenty-four
The doctorate is a ninth-house undertaking with an eighth-house character, long, solitary and concerned with what is not yet known, and it is timed by the ninth lord, the eighth lord and Ketu. A sub-period of the ninth lord, or of a planet in the ninth, or of Ketu when Ketu sits in the ninth, fifth or twelfth, supports the doctorate; a sub-period of the sixth or eleventh lord pulls toward the job, the salary and the network, and a native who starts a PhD in an eleventh-lord sub-period usually leaves it for an offer within two years. Saturn’s condition says whether the thesis finishes: Saturn aspecting the ninth is the thesis that takes seven years and gets done, Saturn afflicting the ninth lord is the one that does not. The fellowship is the eleventh house. The foreign doctorate is the twelfth and Rahu.
The honest reading at twenty-four compares the next two sub-periods. If a ninth-lord or Ketu sub-period is running or beginning and the chart carries the teaching signatures, the doctorate is supported and the job can wait. If a sixth or eleventh sub-period is beginning, take the job and return to the doctorate when the ninth lord’s turn comes, which for most charts it does. The reading that says “the PhD will not finish in this stretch” is worth the fee on its own; I have given it to people who thanked me five years later.
The researcher’s chart
Ketu is the researcher’s planet, the one that removes everything irrelevant until the problem is bare, and Ketu in the fifth, eighth, ninth or twelfth is the placement of the person who can spend a decade on one question. The eighth house gives research into what is hidden, the twelfth research done alone, the ninth research inside a tradition. Saturn gives the patience and the institution that pays for it. Mercury gives the writing up. A strong Jupiter turns the researcher into a teacher; a weak one leaves them in the laboratory, which is where some of them belong. The chart of the pure researcher is often mistaken for a weak career chart, because the tenth house is quiet and the eighth and twelfth are busy, and the reading that recognises it spares a scholar from being pushed into administration.
Government college, private university, or your own institute
The state’s colleges and universities are entered through examination and are the Sun’s and Saturn’s, and the combinations for state service, with the examination read as timing, are in Government Job Yoga in the Kundli. The permanent post, the tenure, the confirmed appointment, is Saturn’s or the tenth lord’s. The research output, the papers and the book, clusters in Ketu and eighth-lord sub-periods and in Mercury’s for the writing. The professorship and the chair are the Sun’s and Jupiter’s, with Jupiter transiting the tenth. Saturn’s transit over the ninth is the thesis grind and the administrative years. Saturn in the D10 tenth is the institution’s administrator; the Sun there is the head; Ketu in the D10 eighth or twelfth is the researcher. A Leo lagna chart, particulars changed. Jupiter rules the fifth and eighth and sits in Sagittarius, its own sign, in the fifth. Mercury rules the second and eleventh and is exalted in Virgo in the second, with the Sun, the lagna lord, beside it, forming Budhaditya yoga in the house of speech. Venus rules the tenth and third and sits in Libra, its own sign, in the third, with Rahu. Mars rules the ninth and fourth, the yogakaraka for this lagna, and is exalted in Capricorn in the sixth. It cannot tell a native whether a specific thesis will be accepted, only whether the sub-period supports finishing.
