Why Mercury retrogrades three times a year, always near the Sun
Mercury orbits inside the Earth’s orbit and never strays far from the Sun in our sky. Each time it swings round between the Earth and the Sun, its motion against the stars appears to stop and reverse for about three weeks. Swiss Ephemeris figures for the sixty years from 1950 to 2010 show 189 such spells, a little over three a year, each lasting between 19 and 25 days, and Mercury was retrograde on 19 percent of all days in that span. About one person in five is therefore born with a natal Mercury retrograde, which makes it common enough that it cannot mean anything dramatic by itself.
Where Mercury sits during those spells is the key to reading it. A retrograde Mercury was never more than about 22 degrees from the Sun across those sixty years, it shared the Sun’s sign on two retrograde days in every three, and it fell within twelve degrees of the Sun on six retrograde days in ten. In other words, most retrograde Mercurys are combust by the classical orb, which is the reverse of the outer planets: a retrograde Saturn or Jupiter can never be combust, while a retrograde Mercury usually is. How a retrograde Mercury thinks and speaks
Mercury is buddhi in the working sense, the intelligence that sorts, compares, calculates and puts things into words, along with speech, writing, trade, learning and the nervous quickness of the mind. Direct, it tends to process in a straight line, taking in, deciding and saying. Retrograde, the line folds back. People with this placement often think a point through several times before committing to it, notice the error in the third paragraph that everyone else read past, remember conversations in detail, and express themselves better in writing than in quick speech. The first answer they give is often provisional; the one they give the next morning is the considered one.
That is a strength in the right work and a friction in the wrong setting. Editing, research, analysis, law, accounts, translation, programming and any craft that rewards revision suit it well. Retrograde and combust Mercury together is the commonest form of all, and it reads as a mind that does its best work quietly and a voice that grows stronger with age. Two refinements matter. The closer Mercury is to the Sun, the more its independent voice is drawn into the Sun’s house and lordship, so the houses the Sun rules for the ascendant tell you whose authority the ideas serve. And a Mercury that falls just outside the twelve-degree orb while still sharing the Sun’s sign is usually read as the stronger Budhaditya pairing rather than as combust, which is why the degree, not the sign, decides the reading.

In its own signs Gemini and Virgo, and placed in a kendra from the lagna, Mercury forms Bhadra yoga, and a retrograde Mercury keeps that yoga intact and adds depth to it. Debilitated in Pisces, it is best read through the rules of neecha bhanga, one of which looks for Jupiter, the lord of Pisces, in a kendra, and a cancelled retrograde Mercury in Pisces often belongs to someone who understands a subject deeply and learns late how to explain it.
Study, examinations and the second attempt
Because Mercury governs the learning mind, the question parents and students ask most is whether a retrograde Mercury means difficulty with studies. The pattern practitioners actually see is different: learning by repetition and review rather than by first exposure, strong long-term retention once something is understood, and a noticeable tendency to do better on the second attempt at an examination than on the first. Many excellent students and scholars have a natal Mercury retrograde, often with an unusually good memory for what they have worked through themselves.
Education is judged from the fourth house for schooling, the fifth for intelligence and examinations, and the ninth for higher learning, together with Mercury and Jupiter and the dasha running at the time of the examination. Mercury’s Mahadasha runs seventeen years, and with a retrograde Mercury it tends to be a period of building skill, returning to education, finishing work begun earlier and, often, changing track once the person has thought the change through. Which houses Mercury rules decides how that period feels. For Gemini and Virgo ascendants Mercury is the lagna lord, and a retrograde Mercury Mahadasha is a long, formative stretch in which the person’s own voice matures. In Parashari practice a fast planet’s transit does not date events by itself: the dasha sets what a period can deliver, and a transit of Mercury only colours the timing of what is already promised. For most charts a transit Mercury retrograde amounts to nothing more than a sensible habit of rereading documents and confirming arrangements, which people with a natal retrograde Mercury tend to do anyway.
It becomes worth noticing when the retrograde loop falls on a sensitive point, the natal Mercury, the Moon or the lagna degree, or on the tenth or seventh from the lagna while a Mercury period is running; even then the reading is about review and correction, not loss. A note for parents: children and a retrograde Mercury
Parents sometimes find a retrograde Mercury in a child’s chart and wonder whether it explains late speech, difficulty with reading, or a child who seems slow to answer. A birth chart is not a developmental assessment, and no placement should be used to explain, excuse or diagnose a child’s speech, language or learning. If there is any concern about how a child is speaking, reading or learning, the right people to see are a paediatrician and, where they advise it, a speech and language therapist or an educational psychologist, and early assessment matters far more than any chart factor.
What the placement does tend to describe, in children as in adults, is a reflective style: a child who needs a moment before answering, who asks to hear something again, who prefers to try on their own before being shown, and who remembers what they have worked out for themselves. She failed her first attempt at a national language proficiency examination at twenty, in Mercury-Mercury, and passed it at twenty-two, in Mercury-Venus, with the highest score in her year. Mercury, the lagna and tenth lord, retrograde in Leo in the twelfth at twelve degrees, eight degrees from the Sun at twenty degrees Leo, so retrograde and combust together; Rahu in Cancer in the eleventh; the Moon in Scorpio in the third, early in Anuradha, so Saturn’s period ran until eighteen and Mercury’s seventeen years followed. He trained as an analyst and his work was good from the start, but in his first job his best reports went out under his manager’s name.
