Engineering is the most common degree among the people who consult me and the least common profession, and that gap is the subject of half the engineering questions I get. The parent of a student preparing for the entrance examination wants to know whether the effort is aimed at the right field. The third-year student wants to know whether to stay in the core branch or move to software. And the thirty-five-year-old with an engineering degree and a management job wants to know whether the chart ever meant them to build anything. The chart has an answer for each, because engineering has a signature: Mars for the machine and the force, Saturn for the structure and the long project, Mercury for the circuit and the calculation, all of it running through the third house, which is where skill lives.

The engineer’s planets and houses
Mars is force, heat, metal and the machine, and it is the engineer’s first planet: the one that builds, cuts, drives and repairs. Saturn is structure, material, load, time and the project that takes years, and it is the second: the civil engineer’s planet, the mining engineer’s, the planet of everything that must stand up and stay up. Mercury is calculation, circuitry, control and code, the planet of the electronic and computing branches, and its treatment in software is in the article linked above. The Sun gives power, energy and the leadership of projects. Venus gives design, finish, the automobile’s line and the architect’s eye. Jupiter gives the management, consulting and teaching of engineering. Rahu gives the newest technology, aerospace and scale. Ketu gives precision, instrumentation, research and the engineer who works alone on the hard problem. The Moon gives fluids, marine work and the chemical plant.
The third house is the hands: skill, craft, effort, the thing the native can do that others cannot, and an engineer with a weak third house is an engineer by certificate only. The tenth is the profession. The fourth is land, vehicles, buildings and the home region, the civil engineer’s house. The eighth is what lies underground: mining, oil, and research into what is hidden. The sixth is employment, which is what most engineering is, and the ninth is the higher learning the degree demands.
What an engineering chart looks like
Mars connected to the tenth house or the third is the first thing I look for. Mars in the tenth is a builder’s placement and Mars in the third is a maker’s, and Mars as tenth lord in dignity carries the same meaning from wherever it sits. Saturn connected to the tenth or the fourth is the second: the structure, the site, the long project. Mars and Saturn in connection with each other, by conjunction, aspect or exchange, is the engineer’s pair in the old sense, the drive that Saturn disciplines into something that stands, and it appears in the charts of civil and mechanical engineers far more often than in the population at large. Mars with Mercury gives the electronics engineer and the fast technical mind. Mars with the Sun gives power engineering and project command. Mars dignified in a kendra forms Ruchaka yoga, the builder by will. A tenth lord in an earth sign, Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn, leans the profession toward the material. A Mars or Saturn Amatyakaraka confirms it from the Jaimini side, and Mars or Saturn in a D10 kendra confirms it from the divisional side.
One of these makes engineering possible, two make it likely, and three or more describe a person who would have found their way to a workshop whatever the family had planned. The count matters most when the family is planning: an entrance-examination campaign aimed at a chart with none of them is aimed at the wrong field.

Architecture sits beside the table, Venus and Saturn through the fourth, the designed structure rather than the calculated one, and a chart with Venus on the fourth and Saturn on the tenth is often happier in architecture than in civil engineering. The branch lean is a tendency to weigh against marks, seats and preference, not a rule to be obeyed.
The degree that leads somewhere else
In this country an engineering degree is very often a credential rather than a vocation, and the charts show it plainly. When Mars and Saturn are not connected to the career houses and Mercury or Jupiter is, the degree was the ticket and the career was always going to be analytical, commercial or managerial: software, banking, consulting, the civil services, the family business. Nothing in such a chart failed. The tenth lord was never Mars, the third house was never the engineer’s, and the four years were an education in discipline that the real career used. The reading that says this to a thirty-five-year-old manager who feels they abandoned engineering is a kindness, and it is accurate. The reverse case matters more. A chart with Mars and Saturn on the career houses that was pushed into software or management for the money produces a person who is competent and restless, and who often returns to building something in a Mars sub-period in their forties: a factory, a house, a workshop, a product. The chart kept the vocation while the career went elsewhere.
Core or software: the third-year fork
Every engineering student in a core branch faces the fork at some point: stay with the machine, the site or the plant, or move to software where the offers are. The chart settles it by the planet on the career. Mars or Saturn connected to the tenth or third, with Mercury quiet, is a core chart, and its native in software is the developer who misses the workshop and leaves for hardware, robotics or a plant within a decade. Mercury or Rahu connected to the tenth or third, with Mars quiet, is a software chart that happened to enrol in mechanical, and its native should move at the fork without guilt. Both connected is the embedded, robotics, automation or industrial-software chart, the engineer who does both and is paid for the combination. Employment, public sector, contracting, own firm
Most engineers are employed, and the sixth lord’s condition says how well. Saturn and the Sun connected to the tenth give the public sector, the engineering services of the state, the utilities and the large undertakings, and the combinations for that are in Government Job Yoga in the Kundli. A strong seventh house with a strong third gives contracting, the engineer who takes the work rather than the wage, and a strong seventh with Jupiter or the ninth gives consulting; the mode question in general is in Job or Business?. Mars with Rahu on the seventh or eleventh gives the manufacturing venture that grows. The sequence, employee then contractor then owner, is the commonest engineering arc, and the dasha sets when each step falls.
Timing an engineering career
The entrance examination is an educational and competitive event, read from the fourth, fifth and ninth for the study and the sixth and eleventh for the competition, with the education houses set out in the education guide. The attempt goes best in a sub-period of the fifth, ninth, sixth or eleventh lord with Jupiter transiting the fifth, ninth or lagna, and the chart says which attempt that is; it does not say the seat is certain, and a reading that claims a rank has left the method. The site years, the years of physical building, belong to Mars’s sub-periods, and a Mars sub-period inside a supportive major period is when an engineer does the work they are proudest of. Saturn’s sub-periods are the long projects and the slow rise. The move from the site to the office, from building to managing, falls in a Sun or Jupiter sub-period, or under Saturn’s transit of the tenth around forty, and a chart with a strong Sun makes that move well while a chart with a strong Mars and weak Sun should think twice before leaving the field. The engineer in the D10
Open the Dasamsa and look for Mars or Saturn in its kendras, or in its tenth, or ruling its lagna; a D10 lagna in Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius or Virgo leans technical. Mercury in a D10 kendra tilts the engineering toward electronics or software; the Sun there tilts it toward power and command; Venus there, toward design. A rashi chart with the engineering signatures and a D10 that hides them is the credential without the vocation described above, and a D10 with Mars in the tenth under a rashi chart that looked commercial is the trader’s son who turned out to be the family’s first engineer. A worked chart: a civil engineer
A Scorpio lagna chart, details altered. Mars rules the lagna and the sixth and is exalted in Capricorn in the third. Saturn rules the third and fourth and sits in Aquarius, its own sign, in the fourth, aspecting the sixth, the tenth and the lagna, with Ketu beside it. The Sun rules the tenth and is exalted in Aries in the sixth. Mercury rules the eighth and eleventh and is debilitated in Pisces in the fifth, beside Jupiter in its own sign, which cancels the debility. Venus rules the seventh and twelfth and sits in Taurus, its own sign, in the seventh. The Moon rules the ninth and sits in Cancer, its own sign, in the ninth. Rahu is in Leo in the tenth.
The signatures stack. An exalted Mars in the third: the hands, the skill, the maker. Saturn in its own sign in the fourth, aspecting the tenth: land, structures, construction, and the profession under Saturn’s aspect. Mars and Saturn in mutual reception of a kind, Mars in Saturn’s sign and Saturn aspecting Mars’s lagna: the engineer’s pair. The tenth lord exalted in the sixth: a service career, competitive, with authority in it. Rahu in the tenth: large projects and the appetite for scale. Venus in its own sign in the seventh: contracting, later. Civil engineering, employed first, then on his own account, and the dasha gave the order.
Saturn’s major period, the third and fourth lord’s, own sign, ran from his twentieth year. Saturn’s own sub-period covered the degree and the first site posting. Mercury’s sub-period, the debility cancelled by Jupiter, put him in a design office, where the cancelled Mercury turned out to calculate very well. Ketu’s sub-period, Ketu in the fourth, was a remote site nobody wanted. Venus’s sub-period, the seventh lord in its own sign, brought his first partnership, a small contracting arrangement on the side. The Sun’s sub-period, the tenth lord exalted, made him project head. The Moon’s sub-period, the ninth lord in its own sign, took him to a foreign infrastructure project, the long journey. Mars’s sub-period, exalted in the third, was the build he still talks about. Rahu’s sub-period, in the tenth, was scale, a project larger than anything before it. Mercury’s major period followed in his fortieth year, the eleventh lord’s, and he left employment to run a design-and-build consultancy that the Venus in the seventh had been describing since the beginning. The site was Saturn’s; the firm was Mercury’s; the chart said engineer at seventeen and said it in the third house, which is where I look first.
Where the reading stops
The chart does not hand out a seat, a rank or a branch; it hands out a lean, and the seat is decided by marks and vacancies that no house sees. It does not choose between two branches for a student who qualifies for both; the table above is a tendency, and a student should weigh it against their own preference. It does not tell the manager with an engineering degree that they betrayed the chart, because in most such charts the vocation was never engineering. Its whole architecture rests on the birth time: the third, fourth, sixth and tenth are whole signs, and a lagna one sign wrong is a different engineer or none. And where a chart shows Mars and Saturn on the career and the native has never built anything, the reading should say, without drama, that a Mars sub-period is coming and that a workshop, a product or a house may be the thing it brings.
