Salary and Income From Work: Reading the Trend in the 2nd, 10th and 11th

“When will my salary increase” is asked around appraisal season by people who are underpaid, and around thirty-five by people who are paid well and have nothing to show for it. Both are salary questions and the chart answers them differently, because it reads earned income as a trend across three houses rather than as a figure. It can say whether a chart’s pay rises in steps or in jumps, whether the money that arrives is kept, which periods carry the increases, and why a competent person’s salary can sit flat for years. It cannot say how much, and anyone who reads a figure from a chart is guessing.

This article is a spoke of the complete career astrology guide. It covers income from employment. The rise in standing that usually carries a pay rise with it is in When Will I Get a Promotion?, and income from a venture is read differently, in Business Success Yogas.

Method. Parashari, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha, transits from the lagna and the Moon. Earned income is read from the second, tenth and eleventh houses and their lords, as tendency and timing. Nothing here is financial advice, no figure is ever read from a chart, and no combination is treated as a promise of money.

In this article

Income from work is three houses

The second house is what is kept: accumulated wealth, savings, the salary as it sits in the account at the end of the month. It is also speech and skill, the things a person is paid for, which is why the second house is the house of earned income in the older sense of a livelihood. The tenth house is the standing that sets the grade: the pay band, the title the salary is attached to, the level the market assigns. The eleventh house is the flow: increments, bonuses, incentives, the gains that arrive, and the network that produces them. A salary is earned by the tenth, paid through the eleventh and kept by the second, and a complete reading needs all three, because a chart can be strong in any one of them and weak in the others.

Two more houses sit behind these. The sixth is the employer and the job itself, and a salary paid by an employer runs through the sixth lord’s condition. The seventh is the market rate, the tenth from the tenth, the employer’s and the market’s valuation of the native, and a strong seventh lord gives a person the market pays more than their employer does, which is the chart of the person who should switch.

What this article does not cover is income from assets: property and rent through the fourth, inheritance and insurance through the eighth, speculation through the fifth, fortune through the ninth. Those are wealth houses, and the wealth reading as a whole is in the Dhana yoga guide. Earned income is a narrower and, for most people, more urgent question.

The planets of pay

Jupiter is expansion, and Jupiter’s periods and transits are where increments cluster; the appraisal that pays well is a Jupiter event more often than not. Venus is comfort and benefits, the salary that comes with a car, a house, a lifestyle, and Venus connected to the second gives pay that is spent on living well. Mercury is negotiation and the numbers, and a strong Mercury gets the offer letter revised upward; a weak one accepts the first figure. Saturn is the slow, steady wage, the increment that comes on schedule and never by surprise, and Saturn on the second is the salary that grows by accumulation. The Sun is the grade itself, the level the pay is attached to. The Moon is fluctuating income, incentives and commissions, and a Moon connected to the eleventh gives a variable component that is sometimes large. Mars is income through effort, overtime, commission and competition. Rahu is the jump, the sudden multiplication of pay through a switch, a foreign employer or a new field, and Rahu’s periods are when salaries double and when they overreach. Ketu is income the native does not chase and often does not notice.

The trend reading: the second and eleventh lords

Find the lords of the second and eleventh houses and read three things about each: dignity, placement and relationship to the other.

Dignity sets the scale. A dignified second lord keeps money; a dignified eleventh lord earns it. A debilitated second lord without cancellation keeps little whatever arrives, and a debilitated eleventh lord earns modestly whatever the standing.

Placement sets the channel. The eleventh lord’s house says where the gains come from, and the twelve placements are read one by one in the eleventh lord in the twelve houses. An eleventh lord in the tenth earns through standing, in the sixth through the employer, in the seventh through the market, in the second through accumulation, in the third through skill. The second lord’s house says where the money goes, and those placements are in the second lord in the twelve houses: a second lord in the fourth puts the salary into property, in the fifth into children and speculation, in the ninth into learning and travel, in the twelfth into expenses and foreign lands.

The relationship between the two is the trend itself. A second lord and eleventh lord connected by conjunction, aspect, exchange or mutual placement form a Dhana yoga, and the salary of such a chart rises and is kept; this is the chart whose pay compounds. When either lord connects to the tenth lord instead, the salary is tied to standing and rises with promotion. When either connects to the seventh, the salary is tied to the market and rises with switching. When either sits in the sixth, eighth or twelfth without other support, the pattern called Daridra yoga is in play and the money that is earned is taken back by debt, sudden expense or leakage, unless its cancellation conditions are met, which they often are.

Why some earn well and save nothing, and the reverse

The person with a large salary and an empty account has a strong eleventh and a weak or leaking second. The eleventh lord dignified and the second lord in the twelfth, the eighth or the sixth is the plainest form; the twelfth lord sitting in the second, Rahu in the second, or Mars afflicting the second are the others. Money arrives in quantity and leaves in quantity, and the native’s experience is of being well paid and permanently short. The reading for such a chart is not to earn more, which the eleventh will do anyway, but to route the second house’s leak into something that holds, a property or an asset the fourth or ninth house will protect, because the second house will not hold it in cash.

The reverse chart earns modestly and grows wealthy. The second lord dignified, Saturn on the second or aspecting it, a modest eleventh, and often a strong fourth or ninth: the salary is never impressive and the balance sheet always is. These natives are rarely the ones asking when their salary will increase; they are the ones asked by their friends how they bought the house.

Timing an increase

Increases arrive in the periods of the planets that carry the income. The sub-periods of the eleventh lord bring the flow, and an eleventh-lord sub-period is the most reliable single window for a rise in pay. The sub-periods of the second lord bring the increase that is kept, often a smaller rise that improves the balance sheet more than a larger one did. The sub-periods of the tenth lord bring the increase that comes with a grade change, and those of planets placed in the second or eleventh bring their own contribution. Jupiter’s and Venus’s sub-periods bring increases when either is connected to the income houses.

Jupiter’s transit through the eleventh house is the increment transit, and Jupiter through the second is the transit in which the increase is also saved. Jupiter aspecting the second or eleventh lord from elsewhere brings the same effect more quietly. Saturn’s transit through the second squeezes: expenses rise, the increment is delayed, the salary feels smaller than it is for two and a half years. Saturn through the eleventh does the opposite over time, giving the slow accumulation Saturn is known for. Jupiter and Saturn both touching the income houses or their lords in the same window, inside a supportive sub-period, is the strongest signal the chart gives for a rise that lasts.

Within the window, the Sun’s monthly transit through the second or eleventh, or over the natal second or eleventh lord, dates the increase, and since most organisations pay increments in a fixed month or two, the Sun’s passage through those houses tells you in advance which cycle carries the rise. Where the increase comes not from the current employer but from a switch, the timing is Rahu’s or the third or eleventh lord’s sub-period with Jupiter on the tenth or eleventh, and that reading is in Job Change and Career Change.

Steps and jumps: the sector difference

A government salary rises in steps: fixed increments, grade revisions, the periodic pay commission, and a pension that is Saturn’s gift at the end. In a government chart the increases follow Saturn’s and the Sun’s periods and Jupiter’s transits over the tenth, and the eleventh house matters less than the tenth, because the pay follows the grade. A private salary rises in jumps: the appraisal that pays or does not, the switch that doubles the number, the variable component that swings with the year. In a private chart the eleventh house matters more than the tenth, Rahu’s sub-periods carry the jumps, and the Moon’s condition says how wild the variable component runs. Stock options and incentive plans are fifth-house and Rahu matters, speculation attached to a salary, and a chart with a weak fifth should weigh them lightly. Which sector pays a particular chart better is one of the questions in Government Job or Private Sector?.

The stagnant salary

A salary that has not moved in three or four years has one of five causes. The running sub-periods belong to the sixth lord, the twelfth lord or Ketu, with no connection to the second or eleventh, and the pay holds while the sequence passes through them. Saturn is transiting the second house or the second lord. The second lord is combust or debilitated without cancellation, and the chart keeps little however the salary moves. The seventh lord is strong and the sixth is weak, which is the chart the market values above the employer, and the salary stalls because the native has not asked the market. Or the tenth is weak and the salary has reached the grade’s ceiling, which is a career-stagnation matter rather than a salary one, treated in Career Stuck for Years.

The chart’s advice differs by cause. For the period cause, hold and prepare for the eleventh-lord sub-period. For the Saturn transit, wait it out and do not switch into it. For the market cause, negotiate in a Mercury sub-period or switch in a Rahu or eleventh-lord one. For the weak second lord, change what is done with the money rather than how much is earned. For the grade ceiling, the promotion reading applies.

A worked chart: seven flat years and a doubling

An Aries lagna chart, identifying detail removed. For this lagna Venus rules the second and seventh, Saturn rules the tenth and eleventh, Mercury rules the third and sixth, Jupiter the ninth and twelfth, the Sun the fifth, the Moon the fourth, Mars the lagna and eighth. Saturn, lord of the tenth and eleventh, is exalted in Libra in the seventh. Venus, lord of the second and seventh, is exalted in Pisces in the twelfth. The Sun is exalted in Aries in the lagna with Mercury. Jupiter is in Sagittarius, its own sign, in the ninth. The Moon is in Gemini in the third. Mars is in Leo in the fifth. Rahu is in Cancer in the fourth, Ketu in Capricorn in the tenth.

Read the income before the history. The eleventh lord exalted in the seventh: gains through the market, and a market that values the native more than any single employer will. The second lord exalted in the twelfth: large sums pass through and are spent, on travel, on foreign things, on other people; a strong earner who keeps nothing in cash. Ketu in the tenth: a native who does not push for status and does not ask. Mercury, the sixth lord, in the lagna with an exalted Sun: capable, proud, and slow to negotiate. The trend reading said: paid below the market until he asks the market, and saving nothing until the money is routed out of the second house’s reach.

He is a software engineer. Saturn’s major period, the tenth and eleventh lord’s, began in his mid-twenties, and he joined a good firm at a good salary in Saturn’s own sub-period, which is what an exalted eleventh lord’s sub-period does. Then the sequence ran through Saturn-Mercury, the sixth lord’s sub-period, service without a rise; Saturn-Ketu, the planet in his tenth, thirteen months of not asking; and Saturn-Venus, the second lord’s sub-period, three years in which his expenses rose faster than a flat salary, a marriage and two foreign trips, the exalted second lord in the twelfth doing exactly what it does. Seven years, the same pay band, in a market that had moved twice in that time. He asked why an exalted eleventh lord had given him nothing, and the answer was that the eleventh lord’s major period had been delivering through sub-periods that had no stake in the eleventh.

The reading pointed to Saturn-Sun, the exalted Sun in the lagna, the fifth lord, eleven months long, with Jupiter’s transit due through his eleventh house inside it, and said this was the window to ask the market, because the seventh house held his eleventh lord and the market was where his gains lived. He interviewed in that sub-period and moved to a competitor at roughly double the pay, in the month of the Sun’s transit through his eleventh. The reading also said, less welcome, that the second lord in the twelfth would spend the new salary as it had spent the old unless the increase went straight into something the fourth house could hold, and Rahu in his fourth made property the obvious container. He bought in Saturn-Moon, the fourth lord’s sub-period, which followed. The salary had doubled because the seventh house was asked. The savings existed because the second house was bypassed.

What the reading cannot do

It cannot give a figure, a percentage, or a date, and nothing in it is financial advice. It cannot see the employer’s budget, the market rate for a skill, or the economy in a given year. It describes the tendency of a chart to earn, to keep and to jump, and the periods in which each is most likely, and the native supplies the negotiation, the switch, the savings plan and the judgment. It depends on the birth time, since the second, tenth and eleventh are whole signs and a lagna error of one sign changes every lord in the reading. And it should never be used to tell someone that their chart forbids wealth from work; a weak second house is a chart that keeps money badly in cash, not a chart that cannot hold wealth in other forms.

The KP treatment, separately

In KP a salary increase is judged through the sub-lords of the second, sixth, tenth and eleventh cusps and their dasha, a different instrument from the Parashari reading above, set out in timing promotions and salary hikes in KP. The two are not combined in one reading. For the underlying question of getting the job that pays the salary at all, the entry method is in When Will I Get a Job?.

Frequently asked questions

Which planet is responsible for salary?

Jupiter for the expansion that increments bring, Saturn for the steady wage, Mercury for the negotiation, the Sun for the grade, Rahu for the jump through a switch, and Venus for pay that comes with benefits and is spent on comfort. In a given chart the salary belongs to the lords of the second, tenth and eleventh houses and to whichever of them holds the running sub-period.

When will my salary increase according to astrology?

In a sub-period of the eleventh lord, the second lord, the tenth lord, or a planet placed in the second or eleventh, with Jupiter transiting the eleventh or second house or aspecting their lords as the trigger. The Sun’s monthly transit through the second or eleventh dates the increase inside the window. An increase through a switch follows Rahu’s or the third or eleventh lord’s sub-period instead.

Which house is for salary in astrology?

The second house for the salary that is kept, the tenth for the grade the pay is attached to, and the eleventh for the flow of increments, bonuses and gains. The sixth house is the employer who pays it and the seventh is the market rate. A salary is earned by the tenth, paid through the eleventh and kept by the second.

Does a Jupiter transit increase salary?

Jupiter’s transit through the eleventh house is the increment transit, and through the second it is the transit in which the increase is also saved. It delivers when the running sub-period belongs to a planet connected to the income houses. Without that support it brings the appraisal conversation and a smaller rise than hoped, and Saturn’s transit through the second at the same time delays it further.

Why is my salary not increasing?

Most often because the running sub-periods belong to the sixth lord, the twelfth lord or Ketu, with no connection to the second or eleventh, and the pay holds while the sequence passes through them. Saturn’s transit over the second house squeezes for two and a half years. A strong seventh lord with a weak sixth is the chart the market values above the employer, and that salary stalls until the native asks the market.

Which dasha gives a salary hike?

The eleventh lord’s sub-period, whatever major period it falls in, is the one to circle first. The second lord’s brings the rise that is kept, the tenth lord’s the rise that comes with a grade, and Jupiter’s or Venus’s when either is connected to the income houses. Rahu’s sub-periods bring the jump through a switch or a foreign employer, and the overreach that sometimes follows it.

Why do I earn well but cannot save?

A strong eleventh house with a leaking second: the second lord in the twelfth, eighth or sixth, the twelfth lord in the second, Rahu in the second, or Mars afflicting it. Money arrives in quantity and leaves in quantity. The reading is to route the leak into something the fourth or ninth house can hold, property or a long-term asset, because the second house in such a chart will not hold cash.
