The 10th lord in the 10th house keeps action in its own seat. Career, standing, authority and public reputation are all governed in the house that owns them, by the planet that rules it, with nothing routed elsewhere. This is the strongest kendra holding its own lord, and classical practice reads it as one of the more powerful configurations a chart produces.
Every ascendant holds own sign here by definition, six land in moolatrikona, one lands exalted, three gain directional strength, and three carry a yogakaraka. One cell combines four advantages and is the strongest this lord reaches anywhere.
This page belongs to the 10th lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 10th lord
The 10th lord is the planet ruling the tenth sign from your ascendant. Aries has Capricorn, so Saturn. Taurus has Aquarius, also Saturn. Gemini has Pisces, so Jupiter. Cancer has Aries, so Mars. Leo has Taurus, so Venus. Virgo has Gemini, so Mercury. Libra has Cancer, so the Moon. Scorpio has Leo, so the Sun. Sagittarius has Virgo, so Mercury. Capricorn has Libra, so Venus. Aquarius has Scorpio, so Mars. Pisces has Sagittarius, so Jupiter.
If that planet sits in your 10th house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.
Why every ascendant gets own sign
A house lord is by definition the planet ruling the sign that falls in that house, so placing it in that house necessarily puts it in the sign it rules, whatever the ascendant. Twelve of the 144 lord-and-house combinations work this way, and the pattern is identical in each: all twelve ascendants get own sign, exactly six land in moolatrikona, and exactly one lands exalted, which is always Mercury in Virgo. For the 10th lord that exaltation falls on Sagittarius ascendant.
Own sign therefore distinguishes nobody here. What separates the twelve is moolatrikona, the single exaltation, directional strength, the second house the planet rules, and whether it is a yogakaraka. The same structure is set out on the 9th lord in the 9th house and 7th lord in the 7th house pages.
This particular own-house page carries more directional strength than most, since the Sun and Mars both take digbala in the 10th and Saturn’s is elsewhere. Three ascendants gain it here.
Raja Yoga, and where it is not
Because this placement reads so well, it attracts the Raja Yoga label routinely. The label belongs to five ascendants here and not to the other seven.
Raja Yoga requires association between a kendra lord and a trikona lord. A 10th lord in the 10th is a kendra lord in its own kendra, which is excellent and involves no trikona lord at all. Nothing about the placement itself satisfies the condition.
Taurus, Cancer and Capricorn have a yogakaraka 10th lord, meaning the planet rules a trikona alongside the 10th, so the condition is met inside the single planet. Virgo and Pisces have a 10th lord that also rules the 1st, which is a trikona as well as a kendra, so the same applies to them.
For the remaining seven ascendants, Raja Yoga would require the 10th lord to associate with a trikona lord by conjunction, aspect or exchange. That is a fact about the specific chart rather than about this placement.
The placement itself
The first thing this placement does is give the career its own department. The 10th’s function is not routed through the home, the finances, the partnership or anything else, so it operates on its own terms and its condition does not depend on any other area going well.
The second is that professional identity is unambiguous. These natives know what they do, others know what they do, and the description has not changed much across a working life.
The third is that authority is held rather than negotiated. A kendra lord in its own kendra produces natives who occupy a position rather than working around one.
The fourth is that the working life is the organising fact of the biography. Where other placements route the career through some other domain, this one makes it the spine.
The fifth is the upachaya schedule. The 10th rewards application, so standing compounds, and these natives hold positions at fifty that their thirties would not have predicted.
All twelve ascendants
Every ascendant has the 10th lord in its own sign here, so the table shows what varies: which planet, whether moolatrikona or exaltation applies, directional strength, yogakaraka status, and what else it rules.
| Ascendant | 10th sign | 10th lord | Dignity | Digbala | Yogakaraka | Also rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Capricorn | Saturn | own sign | no | no | 11th |
| Taurus | Aquarius | Saturn | own sign, moolatrikona | no | yes | 9th |
| Gemini | Pisces | Jupiter | own sign | no | no | 7th |
| Cancer | Aries | Mars | own sign, moolatrikona | yes | yes | 5th |
| Leo | Taurus | Venus | own sign | no | no | 3rd |
| Virgo | Gemini | Mercury | own sign | no | no | 1st |
| Libra | Cancer | Moon | own sign | no | no | only the 10th |
| Scorpio | Leo | Sun | own sign, moolatrikona | yes | no | only the 10th |
| Sagittarius | Virgo | Mercury | exalted, own sign, moolatrikona | no | no | 7th |
| Capricorn | Libra | Venus | own sign, moolatrikona | no | yes | 5th |
| Aquarius | Scorpio | Mars | own sign | yes | no | 3rd |
| Pisces | Sagittarius | Jupiter | own sign, moolatrikona | no | no | 1st |
Cancer ascendant holds the strongest cell and has its own section below.
Sagittarius holds the exaltation. Mercury in Virgo is exalted, in own sign and in moolatrikona simultaneously, which occurs nowhere else in any chart. Mercury also rules the 7th here, so kendradhipati applies, and a planet at that dignity is not meaningfully diminished by the qualification. What it produces is professional precision: these natives are exact about their work in a way that is visible to anybody who deals with them.
Scorpio holds moolatrikona with directional strength and a single lordship. The Sun in Leo rules nothing but the 10th and gains digbala in the house of authority, which is the Sun’s natural territory. Planet, house, dignity and signification agree throughout, and this is the cleanest configuration on the page.
Taurus and Capricorn hold moolatrikona with yogakaraka status, Saturn in Aquarius and Venus in Libra. For both, the most valuable planet in the chart sits in its moolatrikona portion in the house of action, and Raja Yoga is satisfied inside the planet.
Aquarius gains directional strength, Mars in Scorpio in own sign, ruling the 3rd as well.
Six ascendants land in moolatrikona: Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Pisces. Moolatrikona is degree-based, so whether your own planet falls within that portion of the sign is worth checking rather than assuming.
Gemini and Sagittarius carry kendradhipati dosha through their 10th lord, as throughout this series. Both hold own sign here and Sagittarius holds the exaltation, so the qualification is substantially offset in both cases.
Libra and Scorpio carry no second lordship, the Moon and Sun ruling one sign each, giving the cleanest readings in this series.
Cancer: four advantages at once
Cancer ascendant has Mars ruling both the 10th and the 5th, which makes it the yogakaraka. Here it sits in Aries, its own sign and its moolatrikona, and gains directional strength in the 10th, which is Mars’s own quarter.
That is four advantages in one planet: own sign, moolatrikona, digbala and yogakaraka status. It is the highest count this lord reaches anywhere in the series, shared with one other cell, and it is the only place where all four coincide on a yogakaraka.
Raja Yoga is satisfied inside the planet, since Mars rules a kendra and a trikona together, so nothing external is required.
What that produces is a native whose professional authority is direct and unmistakable. Mars in Aries does not negotiate its position, and placed at full strength in the house of action it produces people who lead by simply proceeding as though they are leading, which generally turns out to be correct.
One qualification belongs even here. Four advantages describe capacity rather than outcome, and the dasha sequence decides when any of it operates. A planet this well placed in a chart whose periods never favour it delivers less than a modest planet in a supported one.
Where it strains
Self-contained means unsupported. Where the 10th lord sits in another house, that house lends the career somewhere to land: a household, a partnership, a network, a return. Here nothing does. The professional function operates on its own terms and connects to nothing else unless something else connects to it.
Nothing reaches anybody without an 11th connection. Standing that has no route to the 11th is standing that stays as reputation rather than becoming a return. That is the single most useful thing to check in this configuration, and it is the commonest reason a native with an outstanding 10th house wonders why the position has not translated into anything.
The career is the whole biography. Where the working life is the organising fact, there is very little that is not it, and these natives reach retirement with less outside the profession than they expected to have.
An unambiguous identity is hard to revise. Knowing exactly what you do, and being known for it, makes changing direction a public act rather than a private decision.
Career and work
The natural fit is any profession with a clear structure and a recognised position within it. Institutional leadership, senior management, and roles where the title describes the function accurately.
Government and public administration suit this placement directly, the 10th governing authority and official dealings.
Established professions with defined progression recur: law, medicine, engineering, the armed services, and any discipline where standing is formally recognised.
Founding and running an organisation fits, since these natives are comfortable holding a position rather than working around one.
The friction is with work that has no defined shape, where these natives are less effective than their capability suggests, because the configuration supplies authority and not improvisation.
The second lordship shapes direction. Cancer has the 5th with four advantages, the strongest configuration in this series. Taurus has the 9th and Capricorn the 5th, both with yogakaraka status. Gemini and Sagittarius have the 7th, Virgo and Pisces the 1st, Leo and Aquarius the 3rd, Aries the 11th.
Health
This placement concentrates the 10th’s regions, the knees and joints.
The practical content is ordinary. Knee and joint complaints warrant attention rather than tolerance, particularly for natives in physically demanding or long-standing work, and anything persistent belongs with a doctor. This site does not predict illness or longevity from any placement.
The observation that does belong follows from the concentration. Where the career is the organising fact of a life, everything else competes with it for time, and health maintenance is the first thing to lose that competition because its costs are deferred rather than immediate. These natives do not neglect appointments through carelessness; they postpone them because something professional is always more pressing, and something professional always will be. Booking screening as a fixed commitment rather than an available slot is the correction that works for this configuration.
When it activates
These themes come forward during the 10th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. For Taurus, Cancer and Capricorn these are among the most consequential periods in the whole sequence, since the planet is the yogakaraka and carries Raja Yoga in itself. The 10th being an upachaya house, later periods deliver more.
These periods characteristically bring position rather than opportunity: an appointment, a promotion into responsibility, formal recognition, or the point at which a native’s standing becomes official.
The strongest windows come when the 10th lord runs alongside the 11th lord, which converts standing into a return, or a trikona lord, which satisfies the Raja Yoga condition for the seven ascendants whose 10th lord does not already rule a trikona.
Jupiter transiting the natal 10th lord or the 10th house tends to bring advancement and recognition. Saturn over the same points formalises responsibility and slows the pace, which for an upachaya placement is generally where accumulated standing starts to count.
The KP layer
Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.
KP decides professional matters through the 10th cusp sub-lord signifying the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th, and the house placement of the 10th lord forms no part of that calculation. A chart with an outstanding 10th lord by Parashari reckoning can show an unsupportive 10th cusp sub-lord, and the two systems are answering different questions rather than contradicting each other.
The 11th requirement is the point worth carrying across, since it matches the Parashari observation above: professional standing with no 11th connection tends not to convert into anything. KP uses neither Raja Yoga, yogakaraka status nor kendradhipati dosha. The sub-lord theory guide covers the mechanics.
Common misreadings
Own sign distinguishes nobody here. Every ascendant has it by definition. Moolatrikona, the single exaltation, directional strength, the second lordship and yogakaraka status are what separate the twelve.
This is not Raja Yoga by itself. A kendra lord in its own kendra involves no trikona lord. Five ascendants have the yoga because of what their 10th lord also rules, which is a fact about lordship rather than about this placement.
Strong standing is not delivered standing. Reputation becomes a return through the 11th house. A self-contained 10th produces a position and not necessarily a result.
The 10th describes standing, not income. That distinction holds across this whole series and matters most here, where the professional function is at its most concentrated.
Questions people ask
Is the 10th lord in the 10th house good?
Yes, and it is among the stronger configurations a chart produces: the lord of the most powerful kendra sitting in its own house. It gives an unambiguous professional identity, authority that is held rather than negotiated, and standing that compounds. The specific limitation is that it is self-contained, so nothing reaches anywhere without a connection to the 11th.
Which ascendant has the strongest version?
Cancer, with four advantages in one planet: Mars in own sign, moolatrikona, digbala and yogakaraka status. That is the highest count this lord reaches anywhere. Sagittarius has the exaltation and Scorpio the cleanest configuration.
Is this Raja Yoga?
Not by itself. A kendra lord in its own kendra involves no trikona lord. If you are Taurus, Cancer, Capricorn, Virgo or Pisces ascendant your 10th lord also rules a trikona, so you have it because of what the planet rules. For the other seven it depends on association with a trikona lord in your specific chart.
Why has my position never turned into money?
Because a self-contained 10th house supplies standing rather than returns. The 11th is where anything becomes yours, so check whether your 10th lord connects to it, whether it rules the 11th, and when those two lords run together.
Why is changing career so difficult for me?
Because your professional identity is unambiguous and publicly held, so a change of direction is a public act rather than a private decision. That is a real cost of the clarity rather than a failure of nerve.
Why is there so little in my life besides work?
Because the working life is the organising fact of this configuration rather than one domain among several. Everything else competes with it for time, and it usually wins, which is worth noticing before retirement rather than at it.
When will this placement give results?
During the 10th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, which bring position rather than opportunity. Windows pairing the 10th lord with the 11th lord are where standing converts into a return.
Want this read in your own chart?
Own sign is the floor, not the answer. Whether your 10th lord is a yogakaraka, whether it falls in its moolatrikona portion, whether it gains directional strength, and whether anything connects it to your 11th house are the questions that decide what this placement is actually worth.
