The 9th lord in the 9th house keeps fortune where it belongs. Belief, the father, teachers, long journeys and luck are all governed in the house that owns them, by the planet that rules it, with nothing routed elsewhere. Classical practice regards this as among the most auspicious placements a chart produces, and the reasoning is straightforward: the most benefic functional planet for any ascendant sits in its own seat.
Every ascendant holds own sign here by definition, six land in moolatrikona, one lands exalted, and three carry a yogakaraka. Two hold moolatrikona and yogakaraka status together, which is the strongest combination on the page.
This page belongs to the 9th lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 9th lord
The 9th lord is the planet ruling the ninth sign from your ascendant. Aries has Sagittarius, so Jupiter. Taurus has Capricorn, so Saturn. Gemini has Aquarius, also Saturn. Cancer has Pisces, so Jupiter. Leo has Aries, so Mars. Virgo has Taurus, so Venus. Libra has Gemini, so Mercury. Scorpio has Cancer, so the Moon. Sagittarius has Leo, so the Sun. Capricorn has Virgo, so Mercury. Aquarius has Libra, so Venus. Pisces has Scorpio, so Mars.
If that planet sits in your 9th house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.
Why every ascendant gets own sign
A house lord is by definition the planet ruling the sign that falls in that house, so placing it in that house necessarily puts it in the sign it rules, whatever the ascendant. Twelve of the 144 lord-and-house combinations work this way, and the pattern is identical in each: all twelve ascendants get own sign, exactly six land in moolatrikona, and exactly one lands exalted, which is always Mercury in Virgo. For the 9th lord that exaltation falls on Capricorn ascendant.
Own sign therefore distinguishes nobody here. What separates the twelve is moolatrikona, the single exaltation, the second house the planet rules, and whether it is a yogakaraka. The same structure is set out on the 7th lord in the 7th house and 8th lord in the 8th house pages.
Raja Yoga, and where it is not
Because this placement reads so well, it attracts the Raja Yoga label routinely. The label is available here for three ascendants and not for the other nine, and the distinction is worth keeping.
Raja Yoga requires association between a kendra lord and a trikona lord. A 9th lord in the 9th is a trikona lord in its own trikona, which is excellent and involves no kendra lord at all. Nothing about the placement itself satisfies the condition.
Taurus, Leo and Aquarius have a yogakaraka 9th lord, meaning the planet rules a kendra alongside the 9th, so for them the condition is met inside the single planet. Here that planet sits in its own sign in the trikona it rules, which is close to the best situation a yogakaraka can be in.
For the other nine ascendants, Raja Yoga would require the 9th lord to associate with a kendra lord by conjunction, aspect or exchange. That is a fact about the specific chart rather than about this placement, and it is worth checking rather than assuming.
The placement itself
The first thing this placement does is give fortune its own department. The 9th’s function is not routed through the home, the finances, the partnership or the career, so it operates on its own terms and its condition does not depend on anything else going well.
The second is that the framework is coherent and undivided. These natives hold a position that hangs together, and they can generally say what it is, which is less common than it sounds.
The third is that teachers appear. The 9th’s transmissive function operating in its own house tends to produce a native who finds the right instruction at the right time, frequently without engineering it.
The fourth is that travel is substantial and formative rather than incidental. Long journeys and time in other countries feature more here than in any other position for this lord.
The fifth is that these natives become teachers themselves, and the transition from student to transmitter happens without a decision being made about it.
All twelve ascendants
Every ascendant has the 9th lord in its own sign here, so the table shows what varies: which planet, whether moolatrikona or exaltation applies, whether it is a yogakaraka, and what else it rules. Nothing on this page carries directional strength.
| Ascendant | 9th sign | 9th lord | Dignity | Yogakaraka | Also rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sagittarius | Jupiter | own sign, moolatrikona | no | 12th |
| Taurus | Capricorn | Saturn | own sign | yes | 10th |
| Gemini | Aquarius | Saturn | own sign, moolatrikona | no | 8th |
| Cancer | Pisces | Jupiter | own sign | no | 6th |
| Leo | Aries | Mars | own sign, moolatrikona | yes | 4th |
| Virgo | Taurus | Venus | own sign | no | 2nd |
| Libra | Gemini | Mercury | own sign | no | 12th |
| Scorpio | Cancer | Moon | own sign | no | only the 9th |
| Sagittarius | Leo | Sun | own sign, moolatrikona | no | only the 9th |
| Capricorn | Virgo | Mercury | exalted, own sign, moolatrikona | no | 6th |
| Aquarius | Libra | Venus | own sign, moolatrikona | yes | 4th |
| Pisces | Scorpio | Mars | own sign | no | 2nd |
Leo and Aquarius hold moolatrikona with yogakaraka status, which is the strongest combination on this page. Mars in Aries for Leo, Venus in Libra for Aquarius, each ruling the 4th alongside the 9th. The most valuable planet in the chart, in its moolatrikona portion, in the trikona it rules. For these two the Raja Yoga condition is satisfied inside the planet and the planet is close to its best.
The temperaments differ entirely. Mars in Aries gives Leo conviction that acts, and a framework the native will defend directly. Venus in Libra gives Aquarius a principled sociability, and a framework expressed through fairness rather than force.
Capricorn holds the exaltation. Mercury in Virgo is exalted, in own sign and in moolatrikona simultaneously, which occurs nowhere else in any chart. Mercury also rules the 6th here, and the trikona rulership dominates. What this produces is a framework of unusual precision: these natives can state exactly what they hold and why, which most people with a strong 9th cannot.
Taurus carries yogakaraka status with own sign, Saturn in Capricorn, and the 10th as a second lordship, which ties fortune to profession.
Six ascendants land in moolatrikona: Aries, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius. Moolatrikona is degree-based, so whether your own planet falls within that portion of the sign is worth checking rather than assuming.
Scorpio and Sagittarius carry no second lordship, the Moon and Sun ruling one sign each. For Sagittarius the Sun is in own sign and moolatrikona ruling nothing else, which is the cleanest configuration on the page, and the Sun in Leo in the 9th produces a settled and unforced authority.
Father and teachers
The 9th is the father’s house and this places its lord there, so the signification is concentrated rather than diverted.
The limits first. This site makes no predictions about a father’s health, longevity or circumstances, or about any third party who has not consulted anyone. A chart describes tendencies in the person whose chart it is.
What the placement describes is the native’s own experience: a father whose example was coherent and whose influence was formative in a straightforward way, and a series of teachers who arrived when they were needed. Where the 9th lord is well placed in its own house, that relationship tends to have been a source of framework rather than of conflict.
The corresponding observation is that a coherent inheritance is harder to examine than a contradictory one. Where the father’s position held together and the teachers were sound, there is less pressure to work out what the native themselves thinks, and that work frequently gets deferred indefinitely.
Where it strains
Self-contained means unsupported. Where the 9th lord sits in another house, that house lends fortune somewhere to land: a home, a partnership, a profession, a return. Here nothing does. The function operates on its own terms and connects to nothing else unless something else connects to it.
Nothing reaches anybody without an 11th connection. Fortune that has no route to the 11th is fortune that stays as favourable conditions rather than becoming a result. That is the single most useful thing to check in this configuration.
A coherent framework is rarely questioned. Where the inherited position holds together, the native has no pressure to examine it, and can reach middle age having never distinguished their own view from the one they were given.
Ease is assumed to continue. Fortune operating cleanly in its own house produces a confidence about conditions that is usually justified and is not examined until a period arrives in which it is not.
Career and work
The natural fit is anything with a body of principle at its centre. Teaching and academia, law, religious and philosophical vocations, and institutional roles built around a doctrine.
Higher education specifically suits this placement, both as a student and as faculty, since the 9th governs advanced learning in its own right.
International work and travel-based professions follow the 9th’s distance signification, which is stronger here than anywhere else in the series.
Advisory practice inside a profession with standards recurs, and these natives are frequently the person others consult about what is right rather than what is expedient.
Publishing and long-form writing on serious subjects fits.
The second lordship shapes direction. Taurus has the 10th with yogakaraka status, the strongest professional pairing in this series. Leo and Aquarius have the 4th. Aries and Libra have the 12th, suiting foreign and contemplative work. Virgo and Pisces have the 2nd, Cancer and Capricorn the 6th, Gemini the 8th.
Health
This placement concentrates the 9th’s regions, the hips, thighs and femur.
The practical content is ordinary. Hip and thigh complaints warrant attention rather than tolerance, particularly for natives who travel substantially, which this placement produces more than any other, and anything persistent belongs with a doctor. This site does not predict illness or longevity from any placement, for the native or for anybody in their family.
The observation that does belong is the one this configuration most needs. Optimism here is unusually strong and unusually well founded, which is exactly what makes it a poor guide to when something should be checked. A person whose expectations have been repeatedly confirmed is the last person to investigate a change. Keeping ordinary screening on schedule regardless of how well things are going is the correction, and it matters more for a well placed 9th lord than for a compromised one.
When it activates
These themes come forward during the 9th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. For Taurus, Leo and Aquarius these are among the most consequential periods in the whole sequence, since the planet is the yogakaraka and carries Raja Yoga in itself.
These periods characteristically bring favourable conditions rather than specific events: opportunities appearing, help arriving, a teacher found, travel undertaken, and a general sense that things are moving in the native’s direction.
The strongest windows come when the 9th lord runs alongside the 11th lord, which converts favourable conditions into results, or a kendra lord, which satisfies the Raja Yoga condition for the nine ascendants whose 9th lord is not already a yogakaraka.
Jupiter transiting the natal 9th lord or the 9th house is among the most reliably favourable transits available, Jupiter being the natural karaka of the house. Saturn over the same points slows the ease and tests the framework, which is uncomfortable and generally leaves what survives better founded.
The KP layer
Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.
KP does not use the functional benefic scheme, yogakaraka status or Raja Yoga, so the classical reading of this placement as among the most auspicious available has no counterpart there. The 9th cusp sub-lord is read for higher education, the father, long journeys and doctrine, and foreign residence from the 12th cusp alongside the 9th.
The divergence is worth stating rather than glossing. A chart with an outstanding 9th lord by Parashari reckoning can show an unsupportive 9th cusp sub-lord, and the two systems are answering different questions rather than contradicting each other. The sub-lord theory guide covers the mechanics.
Common misreadings
Own sign distinguishes nobody here. Every ascendant has it by definition. Moolatrikona, the single exaltation, the second lordship and yogakaraka status are what separate the twelve.
This is not Raja Yoga by itself. A trikona lord in its own trikona involves no kendra lord. Three ascendants have the yoga because their 9th lord is a yogakaraka, which is a fact about lordship rather than about this placement.
Auspicious is not the same as delivered. Favourable conditions become results through the 11th house. A self-contained 9th produces a good climate and not necessarily an outcome.
Fortune is circumstance, not merit. A well placed 9th lord improves what a person has to work with. What they do with it is not settled by the placement.
Questions people ask
Is the 9th lord in the 9th house good?
Yes, and classical practice regards it as among the most auspicious placements available: the most benefic functional planet for any ascendant sitting in its own house. It produces a coherent framework, teachers who arrive when needed, and generally favourable conditions. The specific limitation is that it is self-contained, so nothing reaches anywhere without a connection to the 11th.
Which ascendant has the strongest version?
Leo and Aquarius, both holding moolatrikona with yogakaraka status. Capricorn has the exaltation, Mercury in Virgo, which is own sign, exaltation and moolatrikona at once. Sagittarius has the cleanest, the Sun in own sign and moolatrikona ruling nothing else.
Is this Raja Yoga?
Not by itself. A trikona lord in its own trikona involves no kendra lord, and the condition requires one. If you are Taurus, Leo or Aquarius ascendant your 9th lord is a yogakaraka and you have Raja Yoga because of what it rules. For the other nine it depends on whether the 9th lord associates with a kendra lord, which is a question about your specific chart.
Does this make me lucky?
It means conditions tend to favour you and that the framework you operate by is coherent. Fortune is circumstance rather than outcome, and a good climate does not by itself produce a result.
Why does none of this seem to turn into anything?
Because a self-contained 9th house supplies conditions rather than deliveries. The 11th is where anything becomes yours, so check whether your 9th lord connects to it, whether it rules the 11th, and when those two lords run together.
Why have I never questioned what I believe?
Because a framework that holds together produces no pressure to examine it. That is the quiet cost of a coherent inheritance, and distinguishing your own view from the one you were given is work that this placement does not prompt you to start.
When will this placement give results?
During the 9th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, which bring favourable conditions rather than specific events. Windows pairing the 9th lord with the 11th lord are where conditions convert into results.
Want this read in your own chart?
Own sign is the floor, not the answer. Whether your 9th lord is a yogakaraka, whether it falls in its moolatrikona portion, and whether anything connects it to your 11th house are the questions that decide what this placement is actually worth.
