The 3rd lord in the 2nd house routes effort, communication and siblings into the house of wealth, family and speech. What the native does with their own initiative turns into what they hold: skill converts to resources, communication earns, and the work of the hands ends up as money in an account rather than as reputation or position.
The dignity picture is sparse. No ascendant lands exalted and none gains directional strength, one lands debilitated, and one has the 3rd lord also ruling the 2nd and sitting in its own sign, which is the strongest configuration on the page by some distance.
This page belongs to the 3rd lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 3rd lord
The 3rd lord is the planet ruling the third sign from your ascendant. Aries has Gemini, so Mercury. Taurus has Cancer, so the Moon. Gemini has Leo, so the Sun. Cancer has Virgo, so Mercury. Leo has Libra, so Venus. Virgo has Scorpio, so Mars. Libra has Sagittarius, so Jupiter. Scorpio has Capricorn, so Saturn. Sagittarius has Aquarius, also Saturn. Capricorn has Pisces, so Jupiter. Aquarius has Aries, so Mars. Pisces has Taurus, so Venus.
If that planet sits in your 2nd house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.
The placement itself
The first thing this placement does is convert effort into holdings. The 3rd is what a person does under their own initiative and the 2nd is what stays afterwards, so this arrangement closes a specific loop: work goes in and something durable comes out. These natives generally have things to show for what they have done.
The second is that communication is commercial rather than expressive. Writing, speaking, explaining and negotiating are done in order to earn rather than for their own sake, and these natives are frequently better at the commercial version than at the artistic one.
The third is that skill has a price attached. Where the 3rd lord sits in the wealth house, competence is understood as a saleable asset from early on. These natives know what their work is worth in a way that people whose skill sits elsewhere in the chart often do not.
The fourth is that siblings and family resources meet. The 3rd governs siblings and the 2nd governs family wealth, so business with a brother or sister, financial arrangements between siblings, or shared responsibility for a family’s money are all live themes.
The fifth is the upachaya effect operating at one remove. The 3rd improves with time, so the effort side of this arrangement strengthens across a life, and what accumulates in the 2nd follows that curve rather than arriving early.
All twelve ascendants
The 3rd lord is a different planet for every ascendant and lands in a different sign here. Every row below is computed rather than quoted.

Sagittarius ascendant is the strongest of the twelve and it is not close. Saturn rules both the 2nd and the 3rd for this ascendant, so the 3rd lord in the 2nd is simultaneously the 2nd lord at home in Capricorn, its own sign. Effort and accumulation are governed by one planet doing both jobs in the house where the result is kept. Saturn’s character suits it exactly: slow, sustained, unglamorous application producing something that does not come apart.
Worth noting for Sagittarius natives that this is the same planet described on the 2nd lord in the 3rd house page, since Saturn rules both houses. Which of the two pages applies depends on where your Saturn actually sits, and the two readings describe the same lordship arrangement from opposite ends.
Leo ascendant is the one debilitation. Venus falls in Virgo, its debilitation sign, which is the 2nd from Leo. Venus is the natural karaka of value, arriving weakened in the house of what things are worth, carrying the effort function with it. What this commonly describes is skilled work that the native prices badly: real competence, genuine output, and a persistent tendency to accept less for it than the market would have paid. Venus also rules the 10th here, so the pattern shows in career terms as well. Check for neecha bhanga and note where Mercury sits as dispositor.
Taurus and Gemini carry no second lordship, the Moon and Sun ruling one sign each. For Gemini, the Sun as 3rd lord in Cancer gives effort a protective, family-directed character: these natives work for people rather than for outcomes.
Aries and Libra carry the 6th, adding service and competition, which suits earning through problem-solving. Leo and Aquarius carry the 10th, connecting effort directly to career and making this the most professionally coherent pairing on the page. Virgo and Pisces carry the 8th, giving the work a research character and often connecting earnings to other people’s money. Cancer and Capricorn carry the 12th, which frequently means the effort is expended abroad or out of sight. Scorpio carries the 4th.
The exchange case
One configuration worth checking. If your 3rd lord sits in the 2nd and your 2nd lord sits in the 3rd, the two have exchanged houses, forming a parivartana yoga between them.
An exchange between the 2nd and 3rd lords binds effort and accumulation together tightly, more so than either placement alone indicates. What it produces is a native for whom working and earning are genuinely the same activity, with no meaningful gap between doing something and being paid for it. Both houses strengthen, and periods involving either lord activate both.
If that applies to you, read this page alongside the 2nd lord in the 3rd house, since both readings are live at once rather than one qualifying the other.
Siblings and family money
The 3rd governs siblings and the 2nd governs family resources, so with the lord travelling between them these two subjects meet directly.
The commonest patterns are a business or trade shared with a sibling, money moving between siblings in one direction or both, or the native holding practical responsibility for the family’s finances on the family’s behalf. Where the placement is well supported these arrangements work and last. Where the lord is weaker they become the family’s longest unresolved conversation.
Two qualifications, and they matter here more than in most sections. Sibling matters are read from the 3rd house and its lord together, with the 11th covering elder siblings separately, so this placement is one input rather than the whole picture. And nothing here adjudicates a family financial dispute. A chart describes tendencies in the person whose chart it is; it does not establish who was owed what and should not be used to settle that question.
Where it strains
Everything gets priced. When the effort function sits in the house of value, work that cannot be charged for starts to feel like waste. These natives find it genuinely difficult to do something purely because it is worth doing, and the difficulty is more visible to those around them than to themselves.
Communication becomes selling. With writing and speaking directed at the 2nd house, the commercial register can take over conversations that were not transactions. It is effective and it is noticeable.
Effort is measured by what it produced. A stretch of hard work with nothing to show for it registers as failure rather than as investment, which discourages exactly the long unprofitable projects that the 3rd house’s upachaya character is built for.
Sibling money is entered warmly. Arrangements between siblings under this placement begin as family and end as accounting, and the transition is rarely planned for. Treating them as transactions at the outset costs a difficult conversation once instead of repeatedly.
Career and money
The natural fit is work where the native’s own output is sold directly. Sales, trading, commission work, freelance writing and communication, small business, and skilled trades where the practitioner charges for the job.
Manual and skilled work deserves specific mention because the 3rd governs the hands and the 2nd sets a price on them. Craft, repair, catering, instruments, construction: work where competence is physical, the output is countable, and the earning is direct.
Commission and piece-rate structures suit this placement better than salary, because they reproduce its logic. Effort in, money out, short chain.
Family business recurs, following the 2nd’s connection to the family of origin and the 3rd’s to siblings.
The second lordship shapes direction. Leo and Aquarius have the 10th, the most professionally coherent pairing here. Aries and Libra have the 6th, suiting service and competitive fields. Virgo and Pisces have the 8th, pointing at research or work involving other people’s money. Sagittarius has the 2nd doubled, which is the strongest configuration on the page.
Health
This placement links the 3rd’s regions, the arms, hands, shoulders and right ear, with the 2nd’s, the face, mouth, teeth and throat.
The practical content is ordinary and specific. These are the two working instruments for anyone who earns through skill and speech, which this placement produces frequently, so repetitive strain in the hands and arms and anything affecting the voice both warrant attention rather than tolerance. This site does not predict illness or longevity from placements.
The behavioural observation is that when income is tied to output, taking time off reads as a financial decision rather than a health one, and these natives postpone attention on exactly those grounds.
When it activates
These themes come forward during the 3rd lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. Given the upachaya character of the 3rd, a later period generally delivers more than an early one.
The strongest windows come when the 3rd lord runs alongside the 11th lord, which converts effort into gains that actually arrive, or the 2nd lord where they are different planets. For Sagittarius they are the same planet, so its periods carry both functions at once.
Jupiter transiting the natal 3rd lord or the 2nd house tends to bring new earning opportunities from communication and skill. Saturn over the same points prunes the marginal work and clarifies what was actually paying.
The KP layer
Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.
In KP the 2nd cusp sub-lord decides whether the chart’s wealth and speech themes deliver, and the 3rd cusp sub-lord governs communication, short journeys and siblings. For earning through self-directed work, the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th are read together, and the 11th connection is what determines whether effort converts into money actually received rather than work merely done. The sub-lord reference tables and the sub-lord theory guide cover the mechanics.
Common misreadings
The 3rd is not a bad house. Its classification in the kama trikona leads some sources to treat it as mildly inauspicious. The 3rd is where independent capability comes from, and its lord in the wealth house indicates self-made earning rather than compromised earning.
Own sign is not the same as a wealth yoga. Sagittarius has the 3rd lord in own sign in the 2nd, which is strong. A formal Dhana Yoga requires association between the lords of the wealth houses and the trikonas, and this is neither of those things. It is a good placement, and calling it a yoga overstates it.
Debilitation is not incompetence. For Leo the 3rd lord arrives debilitated in the wealth house, and Venus is the karaka of value. That describes pricing rather than capability: real skill undersold. Check neecha bhanga and the dispositor.
Sibling readings are not verdicts. This placement brings family money and siblings into contact. It does not establish who behaved well and should never be used to settle a family financial dispute.
Questions people ask
Is the 3rd lord in the 2nd house good?
Yes. It converts effort into holdings, which is a clean and durable arrangement: work goes in and something that stays comes out. The main strain is that work which cannot be charged for starts to feel like waste, which discourages exactly the unpaid long projects that build capability.
Which ascendant has the strongest version?
Sagittarius, decisively. Saturn rules both the 2nd and the 3rd and sits in Capricorn, its own sign, so effort and accumulation are one subject under one planet placed in the house where the result is kept.
What if my 2nd lord is also in my 3rd house?
Then the two lords have exchanged houses, forming a parivartana yoga between the 2nd and 3rd. That binds effort and earning together more tightly than either placement alone, and both readings are live at once. Read this page alongside the 2nd lord in the 3rd house.
Why do I struggle to do anything I cannot charge for?
Because your effort function sits in the house of value, so work and price are structurally connected rather than adjacent. It is worth deliberately keeping one thing you do that has no invoice attached, because the placement will not produce that on its own.
Is this a good placement for freelancing?
It is well suited to it. Commission, piece-rate and freelance structures reproduce the placement’s own logic of effort in and money out with a short chain between them, which salary does not.
Should I go into business with my sibling?
The placement makes it likely you will consider it, since siblings and family money meet in your chart. Whether it is wise depends on the 3rd lord’s condition, the 11th house, the running periods and a great deal that is not astrological. What is worth knowing is that these arrangements begin as family and end as accounting, so setting the terms at the outset costs one difficult conversation instead of many.
When will this placement give results?
During the 3rd lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with later periods delivering more given the upachaya character. Windows pairing the 3rd lord with the 11th lord are where effort actually converts into money received.
Want this read in your own chart?
The dignity is the starting point. What decides delivery is the exact degree, anything conjoined or aspecting the 3rd lord, the second house it rules, whether an exchange with your 2nd lord exists, and which dasha you are running.
