The question is the oldest one in the subject, and it is the one most often answered dishonestly, because it is answered from the wrong chart. Your chart does not contain another person’s feelings. It contains your seventh house, which is the partner as you meet them, and your fifth, which is the romance as you feel it, and a reading that tells you from your own Venus what he feels for you has read your hope and called it his heart. What can actually be read depends on which chart is on the table. His chart, with his consent or at least his date, reads his capacity for a bond, the period he is in, and whether this relationship lives in his fifth house or his seventh, which is the difference between the romance and the intention. Two charts together read what each of you brings out in the other. And a horary chart, cast for the moment you sincerely ask, reads the question as asked, through the seventh house, its lord’s condition, and the reception between his lord and yours. This article separates the three, gives the nine questions people actually mean by “does he love me” with the chart that answers each, and works a horary through to its answer.
It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. The question that usually follows this one, whether the relationship becomes a marriage, is Will I Marry the Person I Love?; the partner who will not commit has his own page, Commitment Phobia in the Chart; and the horary without a birth time in general is Relationship Compatibility Without a Birth Time.
Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha, the seventh house as the partner and the fifth as the romance, in each chart for its own native; horary in the Prashna tradition with the KP 1 to 249 number as the alternative, the querent as the first house and the person asked about as the seventh, the Moon as the querent’s mind. Another person’s chart is read for tendency and period, never as surveillance, and the reading is of the native’s relationship, not of the other person’s private life. Nothing here reads a mind.

From your chart, his, or the moment you ask: three different answers, and only two of them honest.
A relationship consultation reads what your chart can say, which is your side of the bond; what his chart can say, if you have his details, which is his capacity, his period and whether you live in his fifth or his seventh; and what a horary says when you have nothing of his, through the seventh house and the reception; and it tells you which of the three you are getting.

The wrong chart: why yours cannot answer this
A birth chart is a map of one life, and the other people in it appear as the native meets them: the spouse is the seventh house as the native experiences the spouse, the lover is the fifth as the native experiences the romance, and neither house is the other person’s inner life. This is not a limitation of the astrologer’s skill; it is what a chart is. A woman with Venus in the seventh has a partner who gives her comfort and beauty in the bond, which says how she meets him, and says nothing about whether he, at this moment, loves her, because his loving is in his chart and his period. The readings that ignore this take the native’s fifth and seventh, read them at their most flattering, and report the result as his feelings, and they are the reason a reader can be told by three astrologers that he loves her and be left a year later with the same silence. The honest reading begins by saying which chart is on the table and what that chart can carry, and the rest of this page is that.
What your chart does say: your side of the bond
Your chart says whether your side of the bond is open, and that is worth knowing. The seventh lord’s condition and its sub-period say whether you are in a season in which a partnership can form; the fifth and its lord say whether the feeling you have is the romance of a period, a Venus or fifth-lord sub-period that will pass, or the beginning of the bond; Venus’s placement says what you need from a partner and whether this one supplies it, read in Venus and Relationships. The seventh lord in the twelfth, in the seventh lord in the twelfth, says that the partners you meet are the distant kind, which is a fact about your seventh and not a verdict on him; Venus in the twelfth, in Venus in the twelfth, says the love you give is the self-effacing kind that reads distance as rejection. Knowing your own side lets you read the situation without the chart: a woman in her seventh lord’s sub-period, with a partner who has not moved in a year, has an open door and a partner not walking through it, and the chart has told her the useful thing, which is that the waiting is not hers to fix.
His chart: capacity, period, and which house you live in
With his birth details, three things become readable. His capacity for a bond: the seventh lord’s dignity and placement, the seventh house’s occupants, Venus’s condition, the Navamsa seventh; a seventh lord in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, Ketu on the seventh, or Saturn’s heavy hand on both the fifth and seventh gives the man whose capacity for the bond is limited by his chart and not by you, read in Ketu in the seventh and the seventh-lord placements in the seventh lord in the twelve houses. His period: whether he is in a fifth lord’s or Venus sub-period, which gives the romance, or a seventh lord’s, which gives the bond, or a twelfth lord’s, eighth lord’s or Ketu’s, which gives the withdrawal that has nothing to do with you; a man in a Ketu sub-period is not cold to you, he is in Ketu’s season, and the reading gives its end date. And which house you live in for him: whether this relationship, by its timing and its planet, is a fifth-house thing in his chart, the romance, or a seventh-house thing, the partnership, which is the next section and the heart of the reading. What his chart does not say is whether he loves you today; it says what he is capable of, what season he is in, and which house you occupy, and those three are what the question, put plainly, means.
The signs of the serious partner in a chart
The serious partner, the one whose seventh house is carrying the relationship, shows it in his chart in ways that can be listed. His seventh lord’s sub-period running, or coming within the year, is the first and largest: a man in his seventh lord’s sub-period forms bonds, and a man three sub-periods away from it forms romances. The seventh lord in dignity, in a kendra or trikona, with Venus unafflicted, gives the man who can commit; Jupiter’s aspect on his seventh gives the man who commits in the sanctioned way, with families. The relationship’s own timing, begun in his seventh lord’s or Venus’s sub-period rather than in a Rahu, Mars or fifth-lord one, gives the relationship he entered as a bond rather than a pursuit. And the Navamsa: a relationship that his D9 seventh describes, in the partner’s nature, is the one his marriage chart recognises. The unserious signs are the mirror: the relationship begun in his Rahu sub-period, with Rahu in his fifth, in Rahu in the fifth, the appetite that reverses; Saturn on his fifth, in Saturn in the fifth, the man who does not let himself feel much; or a seventh lord far from its period, in which case the honest sentence is that he may be serious in the way the fifth house is serious, and that the seventh will not carry it for years.
A fifth-house thing for him, a seventh-house thing for you
The commonest shape behind this question is the asymmetry: the relationship lives in her seventh and his fifth, so that she is in a bond and he is in a romance, and both are sincere. The chart reads it plainly when both are available. Hers: the relationship began in her seventh lord’s sub-period and she is reading it as the partnership. His: it began in his fifth lord’s or Venus sub-period, or under Rahu, and he is living it as the romance, with his seventh lord’s sub-period years away. Neither is lying; they are in different houses. The reading’s job is to name the asymmetry, and then to say whether it resolves, which it does when his seventh lord’s sub-period arrives while the relationship is still alive, and does not when the romance’s sub-period ends first, which is the question the previous page’s double-window test answers. The asymmetry the other way, his seventh and her fifth, is as common and asked about less, because the person in the fifth is the one who is not asking; and the situationship, the relationship that neither person has put in their seventh, has no answer to “does he love me” because it has not been asked in the house that holds the answer, and the reading says so, gently.
Two charts: what each brings out in the other
Laid together, two charts say what each person brings out in the other, which is a different question from what each feels, and often the more useful one. His Moon on your Venus, or your Moon on his, gives the ease that both mistake for love and that is the beginning of it; his Venus on your seventh gives the man who finds the partner in you; his Saturn on your Venus gives the man who cools what you warm, and the relationship in which you are always the one reaching; his Rahu on your fifth gives the obsession that will reverse; his seventh lord in your seventh, or yours in his, gives the recognition that the bond is mutual. The mutual placement of the two seventh lords is the single best synastry indicator of a bond as opposed to an attraction, and the attraction layer, Venus and Mars between the charts, is read separately, in the Venus-Mars synastry calculator for the mechanics and in Synastry in Vedic Astrology for the reading. Synastry does not say he loves you; it says what happens between the two charts when they meet, and a synastry with the bond indicators and none of the cooling ones is the relationship in which, whatever he feels today, the feeling has somewhere to go.
Nine questions, and which chart answers each
| The question as asked | Your chart | His chart | Horary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Does he love me? | Cannot say | His capacity and his period; not the feeling of today | The 7th lord’s condition and its reception toward yours |
| Is he serious about me? | Cannot say | Whether you live in his 7th or his 5th; his 7th lord’s sub-period | The 7th lord connected to the 1st, 2nd, 7th and 11th, or to the 5th only |
| Does he think about me? | Cannot say | Cannot say; a chart does not read thoughts | The 7th lord applying to yours, or separating; a weak answer |
| Is there someone else? | Cannot say | His 5th and 12th activation; a tendency, never a fact | A planet between the two lords; read with great caution |
| Will he commit? | Whether your own 7th is open | His 7th lord’s next sub-period and its dignity | The 7th lord’s next applying connection and its house |
| Why has he gone quiet? | Whether you are in a 12th, 8th or Ketu sub-period, reading his silence through it | His current sub-period: Ketu, Saturn, the 12th lord | The 7th lord retrograde, combust, or in the 12th from the 7th |
| Will he come back? | Your period and your doors | His period and his doors | The two lords applying after separating |
| Is it the same for both of us? | Which house it lives in for you | Which house it lives in for him | The 1st and 7th lords’ relative strength and mutual reception |
| Will it become a marriage? | Your marriage window | His marriage window | The 7th and 11th connected; then the double-window test |
Three “cannot say” entries in the first column are the honest core of this page: your chart answers questions about you, and the readings that answer the first three rows from it have answered something else.
The horary: the seventh house and the reception
A horary chart is cast for the moment a sincere question is asked, or, in KP, for a number between 1 and 249 the querent gives, and in it the querent is the first house and the person asked about is the seventh, whatever the relationship’s legal state. The seventh lord’s condition is the person as he stands toward the question: dignified and direct, he is present and able; retrograde, he is turning back or turning away; combust, he is hidden or overwhelmed by something else; in the twelfth from the seventh, that is your sixth, he is withdrawn. The reception is the heart of it: the seventh lord in a sign ruled by your first lord, or in your first lord’s exaltation sign, is the person disposed toward you, and your first lord in his signs is you disposed toward him, and the two together are mutual reception, the horary’s word for a bond that both hold; his lord in your first lord’s fall or in an enemy’s sign is the disposition the querent did not want to hear about. The applying aspect between the two lords, forming rather than separating, is the movement toward each other, and its house and its speed give the when. The KP form reads the seventh cusp’s sub-lord and its connections, the same logic in a different instrument, set out in the KP horary introduction and how to select a horary number, and the timing rules in determining time in horary.
What the Moon says in the horary
The Moon in a horary chart is the querent’s mind, and it says two things before the seventh house is read at all. Whether the question is ripe: a Moon void of course, applying to nothing, gives the question that has no answer yet, and a Moon in the last degrees of a sign the question that is nearly settled; the test of a horary’s fitness is in rectifying the horary chart and the Moon’s role in the Moon and the querent’s mind. And what the querent actually feels, which is often not what they said: a Moon applying to the seventh lord is the querent moving toward him whatever they claim, and a Moon separating from it is the querent who has, underneath the question, already left. The Moon’s last aspect is what has happened and its next is what will, and the reading of “does he love me” that ignores the Moon has skipped the one planet that reads the person asking, who is the one person in the room whose feelings the chart can see.
The reading you should not want
There is a version of this question that the reading should decline, and it is the one that asks for another person’s chart to be read as surveillance: what he does when he is not with you, whether he is faithful this month, whom he is with. A chart reads tendency and period, never conduct, and a reading that reports a man’s twelfth-house activation as an affair has invented a fact from a tendency, which is a wrong done to two people. The honest reading of another person’s chart is a reading of the native’s own relationship: his capacity, his period, which house the native occupies, and whether the two windows meet, and it is read for the native’s decision, not for a verdict on him. The same limit governs the horary: the “is there someone else” row of the table is read with the caution that a planet between two lords is an obstacle of any kind, a job, a family, an illness, a distance, and that the reading which names it as a person has gone beyond the chart. A reader who wants the surveillance version is best served by the sentence that a man in a Ketu sub-period is not hiding anything, he is in Ketu’s season, and that the chart’s honest answer is the season’s end date.
A worked horary: “does he still care?”
A woman asked, sincerely and once, after a month of near-silence from a man she had been seeing for a year, whether he still cared, and the chart was cast for the moment; particulars altered. Scorpio rising, so Mars is her, the first lord; Taurus on the seventh, so Venus is him. Mars in Capricorn in the third, exalted, direct: the querent strong, her mind full of messages, the third house. Venus in Leo in the tenth, direct but slow, in the tenth: he is absorbed in his work and his standing, the tenth, and not withdrawn, since the twelfth from the seventh, her sixth, is empty and Venus is neither retrograde nor combust; the Sun in Virgo in the eleventh, a sign away. Reception: Venus in Leo is in the Sun’s sign, neither Mars’s sign nor his exaltation, so he is not disposed toward her by reception; Mars in Capricorn is in Saturn’s sign, and Capricorn is Mars’s exaltation, so she is strong in herself but not received by him either: no mutual reception, which is the plain reading that neither is, at this moment, turned toward the other by disposition. The aspect: Mars at Capricorn 7 degrees and Venus at Leo 12 degrees are five signs apart, no Parashari aspect between them and, by the classical horary aspects, an inconjunct, no aspect at all; neither lord is moving toward the other. The Moon: in Gemini in the eighth at 26 degrees, separating from a trine to Venus, which is the recent past, the year of seeing him, and applying to nothing before it leaves the sign: void, and in the eighth, the house of the ending and the fear of it.
The reading: he still cares in the sense that Venus is dignified enough and direct and not hidden, which is to say the question “has he turned against me” gets a no; he is absorbed elsewhere, the tenth, the work; there is no movement toward her from his side and none from hers, and no reception on either side; and the Moon, her mind, is separating from him and applying to nothing, which is the querent who has, underneath the question, begun to leave, and whose question is not yet ripe for a yes or a no because nothing is applying. So the honest answer was not “he loves you” or “he does not”, which the chart did not contain, but this: nothing has turned against you, he is elsewhere, nothing is moving between you in either direction, and your own mind has begun to separate, which is the thing to decide about. She asked for the timing of a resolution and the chart gave the Moon’s change of sign, four degrees on, about four weeks, as the moment the question would become a different question. It did: in the fifth week she stopped waiting, and the horary had read that in her Moon before she had. That is what a horary can say about another person’s feelings without overreach, and it is more than most readings say, because it says exactly as much as the chart contains.
Frequently asked questions
Can astrology tell if he loves me?
Not from your chart, which holds your side of the bond and not his feelings. From his chart, with his details, it reads his capacity for a bond, the period he is in, and whether this relationship lives in his fifth house, the romance, or his seventh, the partnership, which is what the question, put plainly, means. From a horary cast for the moment you ask, it reads the seventh house lord’s condition and the reception between his lord and yours. Three settings, and only the last two can answer.
Which house shows his feelings for me?
In his chart, the seventh is the partnership he is capable of and the fifth the romance he is living, and the house this relationship falls in for him, by its timing and its planet, is the reading. In a horary chart cast for your question, he is the seventh house and its lord’s condition, dignity, direction and reception toward your first lord say how he stands toward you. In your own chart there is no house for his feelings, only for how you meet him.
How do I know if he is serious about me according to astrology?
From his chart: his seventh lord’s sub-period running or within the year, the seventh lord in dignity in a kendra or trikona with Venus unafflicted, the relationship begun in his seventh lord’s or Venus’s sub-period rather than in a Rahu, Mars or fifth-lord one, and his Navamsa seventh describing you. The unserious signs are the mirror: the relationship begun under his Rahu, Saturn heavy on his fifth, or a seventh lord years from its period, in which case he may be serious in the fifth house’s way and the seventh will not carry it.
What does it mean if the relationship is in his 5th house and my 7th?
That you are in a bond and he is in a romance, both sincerely, because the relationship began in your seventh lord’s sub-period and in his fifth lord’s, Venus’s or Rahu’s. The asymmetry resolves when his seventh lord’s sub-period arrives while the relationship is still alive, and does not when the romance’s sub-period ends first; which happens is the double-window test on the page about marrying the person you love.
Can a horary chart tell me what he feels?
It tells you how he stands toward the question at the moment you ask: the seventh lord dignified and direct is present and able, retrograde is turning away, combust is hidden by something else, in the twelfth from the seventh is withdrawn; his lord in your first lord’s sign or exaltation is disposed toward you, and mutual reception is the bond both hold; an applying aspect between the two lords is movement toward each other and a separating one is movement apart. It is asked once, sincerely, and read beside your natal chart.
Why has he gone quiet, according to astrology?
His current sub-period is the likeliest reason: a man in a Ketu, Saturn or twelfth lord sub-period withdraws from everything, not from you, and the reading gives the season’s end date. In a horary, the seventh lord retrograde, combust or in the twelfth from the seventh is the withdrawal, and its cause is read from the house the lord sits in, the tenth for work, the fourth for family, the sixth for illness. Your own chart adds whether you are reading his silence through a twelfth, eighth or Ketu sub-period of your own.
Is it right to read someone’s chart to know their feelings?
It is right to read it as a reading of your own relationship, his capacity, his period, which house you occupy in his chart and whether your windows meet, for your decision; it is not right to read it as surveillance, what he does when he is not with you or whether he is faithful this month, because a chart reads tendency and never conduct, and a reading that reports a tendency as a fact has wronged two people. The honest reading declines the second version and answers the first fully.

What can actually be read depends on which chart is on the table.
A relationship consultation tells you which chart you are asking from and answers what that chart can carry: your side of the bond from yours; his capacity, his period and which house you live in from his, if you have his details; and the seventh house with its reception from a horary when you have nothing of his.
