Career by Ascendant: The 10th Lord for All 12 Lagnas

“Best career for Leo ascendant” is one of the most searched career questions in Vedic astrology, and it has a real answer and a limit. The real answer is that the ascendant fixes the tenth lord: for every lagna there is one planet that rules the tenth house, and that planet’s nature, the sign it rules the tenth from, and the second house it also rules frame the working life before anything else is read. The limit is that the frame is not the picture. Where that tenth lord sits, in which house, in what dignity, with what company, decides far more than which sign rises, and two people with the same ascendant can have careers as different as a surgeon’s and a property developer’s. This page gives the frame for all twelve lagnas and then sends you to the placement pages that decide the rest.

It is a spoke of the complete career astrology guide. The four-step method for finding a career domain, of which the tenth lord is step one, is in Which Career Suits You?.

Method. Parashari, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa. The ascendant here means the rising sign, the lagna, not the Moon sign. For each lagna the tenth lord is read by planet, by the element of the tenth sign, and by the second house it rules, since dual lordship ties the career to another area of life. Placements are read from the linked pages, not here.

How to use this page

Find your lagna, note the tenth lord and its second lordship, and read the fields as a domain rather than a list of jobs. Then find that planet in your own chart and follow the link in the placement section below to the page for the house it occupies; that page is where the career actually gets read. Finish with the dasha table: the tenth lord’s major period is the stretch of life in which the career it frames is most available, and the periods are of fixed length, six years for the Sun, ten for the Moon, seven for Mars, seventeen for Mercury, sixteen for Jupiter, twenty for Venus, nineteen for Saturn. A lagna whose tenth lord has a long period gives a career with a long central chapter; one whose tenth lord has a short period gives a career that peaks in a burst and then runs on other planets. If you do not have a chart, the kundali calculator casts it with the settings used here.

Aries ascendant: Saturn, tenth and eleventh lord

For Aries ascendant the tenth house is Capricorn and its lord is Saturn, which also rules the eleventh, Aquarius. Career and gains belong to the same planet, and this is the lagna for which the career pays: when Saturn is well placed, standing and income rise together, and when Saturn is weak, both stall together. Saturn ruling the tenth from an earth sign gives structure, administration, engineering, construction, land, mining, logistics and the long institutional career. The Aries temperament, Mars-ruled, pushes; the Saturn tenth lord slows; and the working life of this lagna is the negotiation between the two, which is why Aries natives so often describe their careers as a long fight that was eventually won. Saturn in the tenth, its own sign, is the strongest expression. Saturn in the lagna, debilitated in Aries, gives the slow start and the self-made rise. Saturn’s nineteen-year period is the central chapter of the working life whenever it falls in the working years.

Taurus ascendant: Saturn, ninth and tenth lord

For Taurus ascendant the tenth is Aquarius and its lord is Saturn, which also rules the ninth, Capricorn. Saturn is the yogakaraka for this lagna, ruling a kendra and a trikona, and a strong Saturn lifts the whole chart. Career and fortune belong to the same planet, so the working life of this lagna is tied to higher learning, the father, foreign connections and the favour of seniors, and it rises through them. Saturn ruling the tenth from an air sign gives systems, technology, planning, administration, large organisations, public utilities and work that serves a collective. Saturn in the ninth or tenth in its own sign is the strongest expression; Saturn in the lagna, in Taurus, gives a steady, durable career built on Venus’s ground of finance, land or comfort. The Taurus temperament is patient enough for a Saturn career, and this is one of the lagnas that suits the long game best.

Gemini ascendant: Jupiter, seventh and tenth lord

For Gemini ascendant the tenth is Pisces and its lord is Jupiter, which also rules the seventh, Sagittarius. Career and partnership belong to the same planet, so this lagna’s working life runs through partners, clients, the public and business dealings, and it is one of the two lagnas built for independent practice. Jupiter ruling the tenth from a water sign gives counsel, teaching, healing, finance, insurance, law, religion and advisory work, delivered to people one at a time. Jupiter in the tenth, or in the seventh in its own sign, is the strongest expression; Jupiter in the sixth or eighth gives the advisory career inside an institution or through crisis work. The Mercury-ruled temperament adds communication to Jupiter’s knowledge, which is why teachers, lawyers and consultants are common in this lagna. Jupiter’s sixteen-year period is comfortable for the career, and its transit over the tenth and seventh is the recurring window of growth.

Cancer ascendant: Mars, fifth and tenth lord

For Cancer ascendant the tenth is Aries and its lord is Mars, which also rules the fifth, Scorpio. Mars is the yogakaraka for this lagna, and a strong Mars gives the Raj yoga engine of the chart. Career and intelligence, creativity and speculation belong to the same planet: the working life of this lagna is built on judgment and initiative, and it does well where quick decisions are rewarded. Mars ruling the tenth from a fire sign gives command, defence, police, surgery, engineering, sport, real estate and competitive fields. Mars in the tenth, exalted in Capricorn in the seventh, or in the fifth in its own sign, is the strongest expression; Mars in the lagna, debilitated in Cancer, gives the career that has to overcome the native’s own emotional weather. The Moon-ruled temperament is softer than the career it is given, and the Cancer native in a Mars career is often surprised at how well they lead.

Leo ascendant: Venus, third and tenth lord

For Leo ascendant the tenth is Taurus and its lord is Venus, which also rules the third, Libra. Career and skill belong to the same planet, so this lagna’s working life runs through what the native can do with their hands, voice and eye: communication, media, the arts, design, and the finer trades. Venus ruling the tenth from an earth sign gives wealth-related and material expressions of beauty and comfort, jewellery, luxury goods, interiors, hospitality property, banking and finance, food, and the business side of the arts. Venus in the tenth in its own sign or in the third is the strongest expression; Venus in the second, exalted in Pisces in the eighth, gives the career in hidden wealth, research or the arts of transformation. The Sun-ruled temperament wants authority and the Venus tenth lord gives grace instead, and the Leo native’s career succeeds when they let the second carry the first.

Virgo ascendant: Mercury, lagna and tenth lord

For Virgo ascendant the tenth is Gemini and its lord is Mercury, which also rules the lagna. The self and the career belong to the same planet, and this is the lagna of the professional: the person who is their work, whose identity and occupation are one thing, who is good at the work because they cannot be anything else. Mercury ruling the tenth from an air sign gives communication, analysis, software and data, writing, journalism, commerce, teaching and every intermediary role. Mercury in the tenth in its own sign, or in the lagna exalted, is the strongest expression; Mercury in the seventh, debilitated in Pisces, gives the career that has to be rescued by a strong Jupiter. This lagna is over-represented in technology, accountancy and the analytical professions, and Mercury’s seventeen-year period is the long central chapter of its working life.

Libra ascendant: the Moon, tenth lord

For Libra ascendant the tenth is Cancer and its lord is the Moon, which rules no other house. The career belongs to a planet that changes sign every two and a half days, and this lagna’s working life has phases: more than one line of work, changes of direction, and a career that responds to public mood. The Moon ruling the tenth from a water sign gives the public, hospitality, food, care, nursing, shipping, real estate, retail and the roles that depend on reading people. The Moon in the tenth, or exalted in Taurus in the eighth, or in its own sign in Cancer, is the strongest expression; a dark Moon or a Moon afflicted by Saturn gives a career that fluctuates without settling. Saturn is the yogakaraka for this lagna, ruling the fourth and fifth, and a strong Saturn steadies what the Moon tenth lord unsettles. The Moon’s ten-year period is the chapter in which the public-facing career is most active.

Scorpio ascendant: the Sun, tenth lord

For Scorpio ascendant the tenth is Leo and its lord is the Sun, which rules no other house. The career belongs to authority itself, and this is the plainest government lagna in the system: a strong Sun for Scorpio ascendant is a state-service or leadership signature on its own, and the combinations that build on it are in Government Job Yoga in the Kundli. The Sun ruling the tenth from a fire sign gives command, administration, leadership in any organisation, medicine, politics and roles with a title. The Sun in the tenth in its own sign, or exalted in Aries in the sixth, is the strongest expression; the Sun in the twelfth, debilitated in Libra, gives authority exercised abroad or behind the scenes, or a career spent under a stronger figure. The Sun’s six-year period is short, and this lagna’s career is carried through most of life by the planets connected to the Sun rather than by the Sun’s own period.

Sagittarius ascendant: Mercury, seventh and tenth lord

For Sagittarius ascendant the tenth is Virgo and its lord is Mercury, which also rules the seventh, Gemini. Career and partnership belong to the same planet, as for Gemini, but here the planet is Mercury, and the lagna is built for trade rather than counsel: this is the second lagna of independent practice and the first lagna of commerce. Mercury ruling the tenth from an earth sign gives accounts, audit, analysis, the trade in goods, logistics, health services, pharmacy and any work that turns calculation into money. Mercury in the tenth exalted, or in the seventh in its own sign, is the strongest expression; Mercury in the fourth, debilitated in Pisces, gives the career rescued by the lagna lord Jupiter’s dignity. The Jupiter-ruled temperament brings scale and principle to a Mercury career, and the Sagittarius merchant tends to build institutions rather than shops.

Capricorn ascendant: Venus, fifth and tenth lord

For Capricorn ascendant the tenth is Libra and its lord is Venus, which also rules the fifth, Taurus. Venus is the yogakaraka for this lagna, and a strong Venus gives the Raj yoga engine. Career and creativity, intelligence and speculation belong to the same planet: the working life is built on taste, judgment and relationship, and it rises through the arts, design, media, law in its Libra sense of balance and contract, diplomacy, luxury trade, finance and the business of pleasure. Venus in the tenth in its own sign, or in the fifth in its own sign, is the strongest expression; Venus in the ninth, debilitated in Virgo, gives the career that needs a strong Mercury to cancel the debility. The Saturn-ruled temperament gives Venus’s fields a discipline they rarely have, and the Capricorn designer, lawyer or financier tends to be the one who actually delivers.

Aquarius ascendant: Mars, third and tenth lord

For Aquarius ascendant the tenth is Scorpio and its lord is Mars, which also rules the third, Aries. Career and effort belong to the same planet, so this lagna’s working life is built on skill, initiative and competition, and it rises through what the native does rather than who they know. Mars ruling the tenth from a water sign gives surgery, research, investigation, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, marine and underwater work, forensics, security and the technical fields that require nerve. Mars in the tenth in its own sign, exalted in Capricorn in the twelfth, or in the third in its own sign, is the strongest expression; Mars in the sixth, debilitated in Cancer, gives the career fought against illness or competition. Venus is the yogakaraka for this lagna, ruling the fourth and ninth, and a strong Venus softens a Mars career into design or diplomacy. The Saturn-ruled temperament gives the Mars tenth lord staying power, and this is a lagna of specialists.

Pisces ascendant: Jupiter, lagna and tenth lord

For Pisces ascendant the tenth is Sagittarius and its lord is Jupiter, which also rules the lagna. The self and the career belong to the same planet, as for Virgo, but the planet is Jupiter and the lagna is built for knowledge rather than analysis: the person who is their work, in a field of counsel, teaching or principle. Jupiter ruling the tenth from a fire sign gives teaching, law, the judiciary, religion, higher administration, publishing, philosophy and the leadership of institutions of learning. Jupiter in the tenth in its own sign, or in the lagna in its own sign, or exalted in Cancer in the fifth, is the strongest expression; Jupiter in the eleventh, debilitated in Capricorn, gives the career whose standing is delivered as income rather than title, and which needs a strong Saturn to cancel the debility. Jupiter’s sixteen-year period is the central chapter, and this lagna’s career often matures late and holds long.

Where the tenth lord sits decides more than the lagna

Everything above is the frame. The picture is the tenth lord’s house, and each placement has its own page, written for all twelve ascendants. Find your tenth lord’s house and read that page next.

The twelve placements read together, with the general logic of house lords, are in the tenth lord in all twelve houses, and the system of house lords as a whole is in the house lords guide. Which planet actually governs a given career, when several are connected to the tenth, is the subject of Which Planet Is Responsible for Career?.

The yogakaraka lagnas

For six lagnas one planet rules both a kendra and a trikona and becomes the yogakaraka, the single planet whose strength lifts the whole chart. For Taurus and Libra it is Saturn, for Cancer and Leo it is Mars, for Capricorn and Aquarius it is Venus. In three of those lagnas the yogakaraka is also the tenth lord, Taurus, Cancer and Capricorn, and for those three a strong tenth lord is a Raj yoga in itself: the career is the engine of the chart’s rise, and the tenth lord’s period is the best period of the life. In the other three, Libra, Leo and Aquarius, the yogakaraka is not the tenth lord, and the career and the chart’s rise run on different planets; the native’s standing may come through the fourth and ninth or the fourth and fifth rather than through the profession, and a modest career alongside a fortunate life is the common shape. The named combination this rests on is treated in the Kendra-Trikona Raj yoga guide.

Three mistakes in career-by-ascendant readings

The first is reading the Moon sign as the ascendant. Most people who know one sign know their Moon sign from a newspaper horoscope, and a career reading for the wrong lagna assigns the wrong tenth lord. The rising sign needs a birth time, and the ascendant guide explains how it is found.

The second is stopping at the frame. The tenth lord’s nature says what kind of career; its placement, dignity and company say whether and how. A Scorpio ascendant with the Sun in the twelfth debilitated is not an officer, and a Libra ascendant with an exalted Moon in the tenth is not the unsettled worker the frame describes.

The third is treating the frame as a fence. Every lagna produces people in every field. The tenth lord describes the domain the career leans toward and the way the native works within whatever field they enter, and a Virgo ascendant in the army is an analytical soldier rather than a mistake.

What the ascendant cannot tell you

It cannot survive an uncertain birth time. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, and a birth on the boundary between two signs has two possible tenth lords and two possible careers; where a life does not match the frame, the time is the first suspect and rectification comes before advice. It cannot name a job; the frame is a domain, and the domain is wide. It says nothing about timing beyond the length of the tenth lord’s period, and the timing of career events belongs to the dasha table and the transits, covered across the cluster. And it does not replace the four-step method: the tenth lord is the first step, and the strongest planet on the tenth, the Amatyakaraka and the D10 lagna are the other three.

Frequently asked questions

Which ascendant is best for career?

None is best. Each lagna has a fixed tenth lord that frames the career, and the quality of the career depends on where that planet sits, in what dignity, and whether its period falls in the working years. Taurus, Cancer and Capricorn ascendants have a tenth lord that is also the yogakaraka, so a strong tenth lord lifts their whole chart, but a well-placed tenth lord for any lagna produces a strong career.

What is the tenth lord for each ascendant?

Saturn for Aries and Taurus, Jupiter for Gemini and Pisces, Mars for Cancer and Aquarius, Venus for Leo and Capricorn, Mercury for Virgo and Sagittarius, the Moon for Libra, and the Sun for Scorpio. The second house each of these planets rules ties the career to another area of life: gains for Aries, fortune for Taurus, partnership for Gemini and Sagittarius, intelligence for Cancer and Capricorn, skill for Leo and Aquarius, the self for Virgo and Pisces.

Does the ascendant decide profession?

It fixes the tenth lord, which frames the domain of the career and the way the native works. It does not decide the profession, because the tenth lord’s house, dignity and company, the planets occupying or aspecting the tenth, the Amatyakaraka and the D10 all modify the frame. Two people with the same ascendant can be a surgeon and a property developer, both living the same tenth lord in different placements.

Which ascendant is good for a government job?

Scorpio ascendant has the Sun as tenth lord, so a strong Sun is a state-service signature on its own. Aries and Taurus have Saturn, the planet of service and administration, as tenth lord, and do well in structured government roles when the Sun also connects to the tenth. Any ascendant can hold a government job when the Sun and Saturn are connected to the tenth house and the sixth and eleventh support competition and success.

Which ascendant is good for business?

Gemini and Sagittarius have a tenth lord that also rules the seventh, the house of trade and partnership, so career and business belong to one planet for them, Jupiter for Gemini and Mercury for Sagittarius. Leo and Aquarius have a tenth lord that also rules the third, the house of initiative. For every lagna, though, business is read from the seventh, second and eleventh houses rather than from the ascendant alone.

How does the tenth lord’s placement change the career?

Completely. The same tenth lord in the sixth gives a career of service, in the seventh a career through partnership, in the ninth a career through learning or abroad, in the eleventh a career that pays, in the twelfth a career in obscurity or foreign lands. Each of the twelve placements has its own page, and reading the placement page for your tenth lord’s house is the step that turns the ascendant’s frame into a reading.

Is career read from the Moon sign or the ascendant?

From the ascendant first, because the tenth house counted from the rising sign is the primary house of career. The tenth from the Moon is read as a second tenth house, and when it holds planets while the tenth from the lagna is empty it carries real weight. But the tenth lord that frames the career is the one counted from the lagna, which needs a birth time to find.
