What the 7th lord carries

The 7th is the kalatra bhava, and its lord carries marriage and the spouse, business partnership, trade and commerce, the public and one’s dealings with it, open opposition as distinct from the 6th’s concealed kind, and the lower abdomen and pelvic region.

Structurally it is a kendra, the house directly opposite the ascendant, which gives it unusual weight: whatever sits there is as far from the self as the chart allows while remaining on the same axis. It is also classified as a maraka house in the classical scheme, which is a traditional association rather than a prediction, and this site draws no longevity conclusions from it.

One distinction worth holding across this series. The 7th governs the partner as a role rather than as a person. It describes what the native brings to partnership, what they look for, and how the arrangement tends to function. It does not describe somebody else’s chart, and readings that treat it as a portrait of a specific individual are exceeding what the house supports.

Two doctrines for this series

Two technical points hold across all twelve pages of the 7th lord, stated once here.

No ascendant can have a yogakaraka 7th lord. A yogakaraka rules both a kendra and a trikona. The 7th is a kendra, so a yogakaraka 7th lord would need to rule a trikona alongside it, and the fixed sign-pairs each planet owns make that impossible for every ascendant. This is verifiable rather than asserted, and it distinguishes the 7th lord from the 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th, each of which produces yogakarakas for three ascendants.

Kendradhipati dosha applies to four ascendants. The doctrine holds that natural benefics ruling only angular houses lose part of their benefic capacity, with the exemption that a planet also ruling a trikona escapes. Four ascendants meet the condition through their 7th lord: Gemini and Sagittarius, whose 7th lord also rules the 10th, and Virgo and Pisces, whose 7th lord also rules the 4th. In each case the planet is Jupiter or Mercury and both its houses are kendras.

That is the largest kendradhipati group any lord produces in this cluster, and it attaches to the ascendant rather than to any particular house, so it applies on every page of this series. It qualifies rather than cancels, is held to be strongest for Jupiter and mildest for Mercury, and a planet in strong dignity is not meaningfully diminished by it.

The placement itself

Directional strength means the planet operates at full effect because it occupies its own quarter of the chart. Kendradhipati means its benefic capacity is qualified by what it rules. Those measure different things and both apply: the planet works fully, and what it delivers is moderated. For Gemini and Virgo the dosha is in its strongest form, since it is held to affect Jupiter most; for Sagittarius and Pisces it is mildest, Mercury being the least affected.

Pisces ascendant is the one debilitation, and it carries directional strength and the dosha simultaneously. Mercury falls in Virgo, its debilitation sign, which is the ascendant itself, while gaining digbala in the 1st. Mercury is the planet of definition and Virgo is its debilitation despite being its own sign in other charts, which trips people up: here Virgo is the 7th sign from Pisces, and Mercury is debilitated in it.

The practical reading is a native fully engaged in partnership and habitually critical of how it is going, with the criticism aimed at themselves as much as at the arrangement. Check for neecha bhanga and note where Jupiter sits as dispositor.

Capricorn and Aquarius carry no second lordship, the Moon and Sun ruling one sign each, giving the cleanest readings on the page and escaping the dosha entirely.

Jupiter transiting the natal 7th lord or the 1st house tends to bring partnership opportunities. Saturn over the same points tests existing arrangements, which is uncomfortable and generally leaves the durable version clearer.

The KP layer

Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.

This is the point at which the two systems diverge most sharply, and it is worth being exact. In KP, marriage is decided by the 7th cusp sub-lord and its significations, requiring the 2nd, 7th and 11th, with the 6th, 10th and 12th read for denial. The house placement of the 7th lord is not the deciding factor and does not substitute for the cusp analysis. A reader who takes a strong 7th lord placement as a marriage indication in KP has skipped the step that actually decides the question.

Common misreadings

No dignity does not mean no strength. No ascendant can be exalted or in own sign here, because the 7th sign is the ascendant’s opposite. Four ascendants gain directional strength instead, and that is what the page turns on.

Digbala and kendradhipati are not in conflict. The four ascendants with directional strength are the four with the dosha. The planet operates at full effect and what it delivers is qualified, and both are true at once.
