6th Lord (Rogesh) in 6th House: Service, Competition & Debts for All 12 Ascendants

The 6th lord in the 6th house is difficulty handled where it belongs. Service, competition, disputes, debt and daily work are all governed in the house that owns them, by the planet that rules it, with nothing routed elsewhere. This is the placement classical tradition names Harsha Yoga, and it is the first configuration in this cluster where a dusthana lord placed in a dusthana is read as an advantage rather than a difficulty.

Because the 6th lord rules the 6th sign, placing it in the 6th house puts it in its own sign for every one of the twelve ascendants. Six land in moolatrikona as well, and one lands exalted on top of both. Six qualify for Harsha Yoga cleanly and six do not, for a reason set out below.

This page belongs to the 6th lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 6th lord

The 6th lord is the planet ruling the sixth sign from your ascendant. Aries has Virgo, so Mercury. Taurus has Libra, so Venus. Gemini has Scorpio, so Mars. Cancer has Sagittarius, so Jupiter. Leo has Capricorn, so Saturn. Virgo has Aquarius, also Saturn. Libra has Pisces, so Jupiter. Scorpio has Aries, so Mars. Sagittarius has Taurus, so Venus. Capricorn has Gemini, so Mercury. Aquarius has Cancer, so the Moon. Pisces has Leo, so the Sun.

If that planet sits in your 6th house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.

Why every ascendant gets own sign

A house lord is by definition the planet ruling the sign that falls in that house, so putting the 6th lord in the 6th house necessarily places it in the sign it rules, whatever the ascendant. Twelve of the 144 lord-and-house combinations work this way, and the pattern is identical in each: all twelve ascendants get own sign, exactly six land in moolatrikona, and exactly one lands exalted, which is always Mercury in Virgo. For the 6th lord that exaltation falls on Aries ascendant. The same structure is set out on the 4th lord in the 4th house page.

Own sign therefore distinguishes nobody here. What separates the twelve is moolatrikona, the single exaltation, the second house the planet rules, and above all whether Harsha Yoga applies.

Harsha Yoga, and who actually has it

Vipreet Raj Yoga is the doctrine that a dusthana lord placed in a dusthana produces good results, on the reasoning that the difficulty is turned back on itself. Three named forms exist: Harsha Yoga when the 6th lord occupies the 6th, 8th or 12th, Sarala when the 8th lord does, and Vimala when the 12th lord does.

Harsha means gladness, and the classical descriptions of it are unusually specific. The native is held to defeat enemies, remain free of illness, avoid debt, prosper through their own effort, and to be fortunate in ways that arrive through difficulty rather than despite it.

The doctrine carries a standard and important objection. A planet that also rules a kendra or a trikona cannot be treated this way, because its benefic rulership dominates and there is no unmixed difficulty to turn back on itself. That objection decides the matter for half the ascendants here.

Six qualify cleanly, their 6th lord ruling no kendra and no trikona: Aries, Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces.

Six are excluded: Taurus and Scorpio, whose 6th lord rules the ascendant; Cancer and Capricorn, whose 6th lord rules the 9th; Leo, whose 6th lord rules the 7th; and Virgo, whose 6th lord rules the 5th.

Aquarius and Pisces are the purest cases of all, since their 6th lord rules nothing but the 6th. Nothing whatsoever competes with the dusthana rulership, which is the exact condition the doctrine describes.

Two qualifications worth holding. Exclusion is not a penalty: for Taurus, Scorpio, Cancer, Capricorn, Leo and Virgo the 6th lord holds a genuinely benefic house, which is worth more than a yoga. And a yoga names a structural feature that activates during specific periods. It is not a permanent condition and it does not exempt anybody from anything, which the health section below returns to.

The placement itself

The first thing this placement does is contain the difficulty. The 6th’s subjects stay in the 6th rather than spreading into the home, the marriage, the finances or the profession. Whatever these natives are dealing with is confined to the department that deals with it, which is a considerable structural advantage and the plainest reason this configuration is read well.

The second is that competence in handling trouble becomes the defining capability. These natives are the ones who sort things out, and the reputation is earned rather than assumed.

The third is that opposition tends to fail. The 6th governs enemies and rivals, and a strong lord at home in it produces natives whose opponents do not prevail, in disputes, in competition and in professional rivalry.

The fourth is that work is the medium. Service, effort and daily labour occupy a great deal of the life, and these natives are generally content with that in a way people with lighter charts find puzzling.

The fifth is the upachaya schedule, which applies with particular force here since both the lord and its house are the same upachaya. What this configuration produces at fifty is substantially different from what it produces at thirty.

All twelve ascendants

Every ascendant has the 6th lord in its own sign here, so the table shows what varies: which planet, whether moolatrikona or exaltation applies, what else the planet rules, and whether Harsha Yoga qualifies cleanly.

Aries ascendant has the strongest dignity. Mercury in Virgo holds own sign, exaltation and moolatrikona simultaneously, which occurs nowhere else since Virgo is the only sign where all three coincide. Mercury also rules the 3rd, which is neither a kendra nor a trikona, so Harsha Yoga applies cleanly on top. Three dignities and an unmixed yoga: this is the best configuration on the page and produces natives of formidable practical competence, particularly in analytical and diagnostic work.

Pisces ascendant is the strongest of the pure cases. The Sun is in Leo, its own sign and moolatrikona, and rules nothing but the 6th. Nothing competes with the dusthana rulership at all, which is the exact condition Harsha Yoga describes, and the Sun’s character gives the native authority in a demanding field.

Aquarius is the other pure case, with the Moon in Cancer, its own sign, ruling only the 6th.

Gemini, Libra and Sagittarius also qualify cleanly. Gemini and Sagittarius have the 11th as a second lordship, which is the most useful pairing available since it converts the effort directly into gains and makes two upachaya houses active at once. Libra has the 3rd, adding a third upachaya.

The six excluded ascendants are not worse off. Taurus and Scorpio have the 6th lord ruling the ascendant, where the lagna rulership dominates. Cancer and Capricorn have the 9th, Virgo the 5th, and Leo the 7th. In each case the planet holds a genuinely benefic house alongside the 6th, and classical opinion holds the benefic rulership dominates. That is a better position than a yoga, and the exclusion follows from it rather than from any weakness.

Six ascendants land in moolatrikona: Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces. Moolatrikona is a degree-based condition, so whether your own planet falls within that portion of the sign is worth checking.

Where it strains

The difficulty is self-sufficient. This is the specific cost of the own-house version. The 6th’s business is entirely contained and therefore entirely permanent: there is always work, always something to handle, and nothing in the arrangement points toward a state where there is not.

Identity attaches to the struggle. A person whose defining competence is handling trouble needs trouble to be that person. These natives are uneasy in genuinely easy circumstances and will find something to fix, which is productive and worth recognising.

The yoga gets over-read. Natives who learn they have Harsha Yoga sometimes treat it as protection. It names a structural tendency that operates during particular dashas, not an exemption from illness, debt or opposition, and behaving as though it were one is how the advantage gets wasted.

Service goes unacknowledged. The 6th’s work is invisible until it stops. Over decades this accumulates into real resentment if it is never named, and these natives are particularly bad at naming it.

Career and work

The natural fit is work where the product is a difficulty resolved. Medicine and healthcare across the board, and diagnostic specialities in particular. Law, especially litigation. Auditing, compliance, quality assurance, risk management, insurance.

Competitive professions suit these natives, who perform better against opposition and are routinely underestimated by people who mistake service for compliance.

Military, police, emergency and security services follow the 6th’s combination of service and conflict directly.

Any role that exists because something goes wrong fits: troubleshooting, maintenance, dispute resolution, debt recovery, crisis management.

The friction is with roles that present no problem to solve, where these natives lose motivation in a way that looks like disengagement and is closer to disorientation.

The second lordship shapes direction. Gemini and Sagittarius have the 11th, the strongest commercial pairing here, since it converts service into gains and activates two upachaya houses. Cancer and Capricorn have the 9th, suiting medicine and law with an institutional frame. Aries and Libra have the 3rd, suiting technical and communicative service. Leo has the 7th, and Virgo the 5th.

Health

This is the placement where the health section needs most care, because Harsha Yoga is classically described as producing freedom from illness and that description gets repeated carelessly.

The limits first, and they are not negotiable. This site does not predict illness, longevity or mortality from any placement. No yoga confers immunity from anything. A person with Harsha Yoga who develops a condition has not had their chart misread, and treating a yoga as protection is a genuinely harmful use of astrology because it delays medical attention.

What can be said honestly is narrower and more useful. The 6th governs recovery as much as illness, and a strong 6th lord at home in its own house is classically associated with resilience and with the capacity to come through difficulty rather than with never encountering it. That is a description of how things tend to go, not a guarantee about whether they happen.

The practical content is the same for everybody: preventive care appropriate to your age, symptoms taken to a doctor early rather than managed privately, and no substitution of astrological reassurance for clinical assessment. Anything persistent belongs with a clinician.

When it activates

These themes come forward during the 6th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. Where Harsha Yoga applies, these are the periods in which it actually operates: a yoga that never runs delivers nothing, which is why identifying those periods matters more than knowing the yoga exists.

The upachaya character applies with particular force here, since the lord and its house are the same upachaya. Early periods are effortful and later ones deliver.

These periods characteristically bring service work, competition and disputes forward. For a strong 6th lord the emphasis falls on winning, clearing and completing rather than on incurring.

The strongest windows come when the 6th lord runs alongside the 11th lord, which converts the effort into gains, or the 10th lord for professional recognition. For Gemini and Sagittarius the 6th and 11th lords are the same planet.

Jupiter transiting the natal 6th lord or the 6th house eases the load and often resolves a long-running dispute. Saturn over the same points extends and formalises the work.

The KP layer

Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.

KP does not use Vipreet Raj Yoga, the functional malefic scheme, or the dusthana classification in the Parashari sense, so a reader working across both systems should not expect them to agree about this placement. KP reads the 6th positively in its own right, for competitive success, service income and winning disputes, which arrives at a similar practical conclusion by an entirely different route. Litigation and loans are 6th cusp sub-lord questions, with the 11th required for the result to register as a gain. The 6th house litigation guide and the sub-lord theory guide cover the mechanics.

Common misreadings

Harsha Yoga is not immunity. The classical description mentions freedom from illness and debt, and it describes a tendency operating in particular periods rather than a permanent exemption. No yoga protects anybody from anything, and relying on one to delay medical attention is the most harmful misuse of this doctrine.

Half the ascendants do not have it. Where the 6th lord also rules a kendra or trikona, the benefic rulership dominates and there is no unmixed difficulty to reverse. Those six are not disadvantaged; they hold something better.

Own sign distinguishes nobody here. Every ascendant has it by definition. What separates the twelve is moolatrikona, the single exaltation, the second lordship, and whether the yoga applies.

Containment is the real advantage. The plainest benefit of this placement is that the 6th’s subjects stay in the 6th rather than spreading into other departments of the life, and that holds whether or not a yoga is claimed.

Questions people ask

Is the 6th lord in the 6th house good?

Yes, and it is the best position in this series for most ascendants. The difficulty stays contained in the house that handles it, the lord is in its own sign for everybody, and for six ascendants Harsha Yoga applies cleanly. The cost is that the work never finishes, since nothing in the arrangement points toward a state without it.

Which ascendant has the strongest version?

Aries. Mercury in Virgo holds own sign, exaltation and moolatrikona at once, which occurs nowhere else, and Mercury rules the 3rd, so Harsha Yoga applies cleanly on top. Pisces and Aquarius have the purest yoga, their 6th lord ruling nothing but the 6th.

Do I have Harsha Yoga?

If you are Aries, Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius, Aquarius or Pisces ascendant with this placement, yes, cleanly. If you are Taurus, Scorpio, Cancer, Capricorn, Leo or Virgo, your 6th lord also rules a kendra or trikona, so the benefic rulership dominates and the yoga does not apply. That is not a loss.

Does Harsha Yoga mean I will not get ill?

No, and this is the most important thing on the page. The classical description mentions freedom from illness, and it describes a tendency operating during particular periods rather than an exemption. No yoga protects anyone from anything, and using one as a reason to delay seeing a doctor is a genuinely harmful misuse of astrology.

Why does the work never end?

Because the 6th’s function is entirely self-contained here, so there is no point in the arrangement at which the handling stops being required. That is structural. Deciding in advance what finished means is the only practical response.

Why am I uneasy when things are going well?

Because your defining competence is handling difficulty, so an absence of it leaves the competence unemployed. These natives generally find something to fix, and recognising the pattern usually converts it from a compulsion into a choice.

When will this placement give results?

During the 6th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, and where Harsha Yoga applies those are the periods in which it actually operates. Later periods deliver considerably more, and windows pairing the 6th lord with the 11th lord are where the effort converts into gains.

Want this read in your own chart?

Whether Harsha Yoga applies to you depends on your lordships, and whether it delivers depends on your periods. Both are worth establishing precisely, along with the exact degree, anything conjoined or aspecting your 6th lord, and whether it falls in its moolatrikona portion.
