The 5th lord in the 2nd house routes creativity, intelligence, children and inherited merit into the house of wealth, family and speech. What these natives think turns into what they hold: judgement converts to money, the creative faculty is monetised, and the intelligence is audible in how they speak.
This is one of the classical wealth positions, since it places a trikona lord in a dhana house, and the grid supports it. Two ascendants land exalted, two have the 5th lord also ruling the 2nd and sitting in its own sign, one lands debilitated, and three have a yogakaraka as their 5th lord.
This page belongs to the 5th lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 5th lord
The 5th lord is the planet ruling the fifth sign from your ascendant. Aries has Leo, so the Sun. Taurus has Virgo, so Mercury. Gemini has Libra, so Venus. Cancer has Scorpio, so Mars. Leo has Sagittarius, so Jupiter. Virgo has Capricorn, so Saturn. Libra has Aquarius, also Saturn. Scorpio has Pisces, so Jupiter. Sagittarius has Aries, so Mars. Capricorn has Taurus, so Venus. Aquarius has Gemini, so Mercury. Pisces has Cancer, so the Moon.
If that planet sits in your 2nd house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.
The placement itself
The first thing this placement does is make judgement saleable. These natives are paid for what they think rather than for what they do or how long they spend doing it. Advisory work, analysis, anything where the client is buying a considered view.
The second is that the creative faculty has a price attached from early on. Where the 5th lord in the 1st makes output identity, this placement makes it product, and these natives are generally clearer about what their work is worth than creative people usually are.
The third is that speech carries the intelligence. The 2nd governs the voice and the 5th supplies the discrimination, so what these natives say is worth listening to and is recognised as such. They are frequently quoted, and quoted accurately.
The fourth is that children and family resources connect. Money is directed toward the children, family assets are held with the next generation in view, and the two subjects are part of one conversation rather than two.
The fifth is that speculation touches the family’s money rather than a separate pot. Where these natives take positions, they do so with resources that belong to the household, which raises the stakes and is covered below.
All twelve ascendants
The 5th lord is a different planet for every ascendant and lands in a different sign here. Every row below is computed rather than quoted, and the yogakaraka column reflects lordship of both a kendra and a trikona.
| Ascendant | 5th sign | 5th lord | Sits in | Dignity | Yogakaraka | Also rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Leo | Sun | Taurus | neutral | no | only the 5th |
| Taurus | Virgo | Mercury | Gemini | own sign | no | 2nd |
| Gemini | Libra | Venus | Cancer | neutral | no | 12th |
| Cancer | Scorpio | Mars | Leo | neutral | yes | 10th |
| Leo | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Virgo | neutral | no | 8th |
| Virgo | Capricorn | Saturn | Libra | exalted | no | 6th |
| Libra | Aquarius | Saturn | Scorpio | neutral | yes | 4th |
| Scorpio | Pisces | Jupiter | Sagittarius | own sign, moolatrikona | no | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Aries | Mars | Capricorn | exalted | no | 12th |
| Capricorn | Taurus | Venus | Aquarius | neutral | yes | 10th |
| Aquarius | Gemini | Mercury | Pisces | debilitated | no | 8th |
| Pisces | Cancer | Moon | Aries | neutral | no | only the 5th |
Scorpio ascendant is the strongest of the twelve. Jupiter rules both the 2nd and the 5th here, so the 5th lord in the 2nd is simultaneously the 2nd lord at home in Sagittarius, its own sign and moolatrikona. Two dignities plus a doubling that puts a wealth house and a trikona under one lordship, which as set out below is what actually forms a wealth yoga rather than merely suggesting one. Jupiter is also a natural karaka of wealth in classical reckoning, so planet and subject agree.
Taurus ascendant is the second doubling. Mercury rules the 2nd and the 5th and sits in Gemini, its own sign. The same structural advantage without the moolatrikona, and Mercury’s character rather than Jupiter’s: earning through analysis, trade and volume rather than through advice and expansion.
Virgo and Sagittarius both land exalted. Saturn exalted in Libra for Virgo produces judgement that converts to money slowly and permanently, with Saturn also ruling the 6th. Mars exalted in Capricorn for Sagittarius produces the opposite temperament reaching a similar place: decisive, executed, and unusually good at turning an idea into a paid thing quickly.
Cancer, Libra and Capricorn have yogakaraka 5th lords, all neutral by sign here. Neutral dignity understates them considerably, since lordship status outranks it, and for these three the placement carries more weight than the table suggests.
Aquarius ascendant is the one debilitation. Mercury falls in Pisces, its debilitation sign, which is the 2nd from Aquarius. Mercury is the planet of definition and calculation, and Pisces dissolves both, so the creative faculty arrives in the house of value without its usual precision. What this commonly describes is a native whose ideas are genuinely good and who cannot price them: the work is worth something and the number is unavailable. Mercury also rules the 8th here. Check for neecha bhanga and note where Jupiter sits as dispositor.
Aries and Pisces carry no second lordship, the Sun and Moon ruling one sign each, giving the cleanest readings.
Cancer and Capricorn carry the 10th alongside yogakaraka status, which is the strongest professional pairing here. Leo and Aquarius carry the 8th, giving the intelligence a researching character and often connecting earnings to other people’s money. Gemini and Sagittarius carry the 12th, Libra the 4th, and Virgo the 6th.
The wealth yoga question
This placement is routinely described as a Dhana Yoga, and the description needs the same qualification it needs everywhere in this cluster.
A formal Dhana Yoga arises from an association between the lords of the wealth houses, the 2nd and 11th, and the lords of the trikonas, the 1st, 5th and 9th. Association means conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of houses. A lord simply occupying a favourable house is a placement rather than an association, and the two have different consequences.
What does form a genuine yoga is one planet ruling both a wealth house and a trikona. That applies to two ascendants here: Taurus, where Mercury rules the 2nd and 5th, and Scorpio, where Jupiter does. For those two the wealth yoga claim is well founded as a lordship condition rather than as a placement.
For the other ten the placement is favourable and the yoga language overstates it. The practical difference is that a placement improves the odds while a yoga formed by lordship is a structural feature of the chart that activates in specific dasha periods.
Two further points that matter more than the label. A wealth yoga indicates capacity for accumulation, not amount, which depends on the dignity of the planets and the strength of the houses. And a yoga that never runs during a favourable period delivers nothing, which is why the timing section below is not an afterthought.
The exchange case
One configuration worth checking. If your 5th lord sits in the 2nd and your 2nd lord sits in the 5th, the two have exchanged houses, forming a parivartana yoga between them.
An exchange between the 2nd and 5th lords is a genuine Dhana Yoga by the classical definition, since exchange counts as association and it links a wealth house to a trikona. It is stronger than either placement alone, and it binds the creative faculty to the earning function tightly enough that these natives generally cannot separate the two even conceptually.
If that applies to you, read this page alongside the 2nd lord in the 5th house, since both readings are live at once rather than one qualifying the other.
Children and family resources
The 5th governs children and the 2nd governs family wealth, so this placement puts them in direct relation.
The commonest pattern is money directed toward the children deliberately and substantially: education, opportunities, a start in something. These natives regard that as the purpose of having resources rather than as a competing claim on them.
The second is transmission forward rather than back. Where a family holds anything, natives with this placement tend to be the ones thinking about what passes to the next generation, often earlier in life than their peers.
Two qualifications. This placement does not indicate whether a person will have children, which no single placement establishes and which is a medical question where it is a question at all. And it does not adjudicate family financial arrangements, which chart work is not the right instrument for.
Where it strains
An idea that cannot be sold stops feeling real. When the creative faculty sits in the house of value, work without a buyer registers as work without a point. These natives find it genuinely difficult to make something purely because it is worth making, and the difficulty is more visible to those around them than to themselves.
Judgement gets rented rather than used. Being paid for a view means supplying views, including on occasions where the honest answer is that more time was needed. The market does not price uncertainty well and these natives learn to round it off.
The children carry expectations that came with the money. Substantial investment in a child’s prospects arrives with an implied return, generally unstated and entirely well intentioned. It is worth naming because it operates invisibly.
Speculation runs on household money. With the 5th’s risk appetite in the house of family resources, positions get taken with funds that are not solely the native’s own. Sizing them deliberately in advance matters more here than in most charts, and it is worth doing while nothing is going wrong.
Career and money
The natural fit is work where a considered view is the product. Consulting and advisory practice, analysis, research sold to clients, valuation, teaching and training, editorial work, and any professional service where the client is buying discrimination rather than hours.
Creative work with a commercial structure suits this placement better than pure creative practice: design for clients, writing to commission, work made to a brief. The 5th supplies the faculty and the 2nd insists on a buyer.
Trading and markets fit the temperament, with the caution above attached.
Family businesses recur, following the 2nd’s connection to the family of origin, and these natives are frequently the one who brings judgement to an enterprise somebody else built.
The second lordship shapes direction. Cancer and Capricorn have the 10th with yogakaraka status, the strongest professional combination here. Taurus and Scorpio have the 2nd doubled, forming a genuine wealth yoga by lordship. Leo and Aquarius have the 8th, pointing at research and work involving other people’s money.
Health
This placement links the 5th’s regions, the stomach and upper abdomen, with the 2nd’s, the face, mouth, teeth and throat.
The practical content is ordinary. Persistent digestive trouble and dental or throat matters both belong with a doctor rather than with a chart, and the latter warrant particular attention for anyone whose work depends on speaking, which this placement produces frequently. This site does not predict illness or longevity from placements.
The observation worth having is that the 5th governs the discriminating mind and the stomach, and the 2nd governs food. These natives register intellectual pressure digestively and reliably, and a period of difficulty with one is worth examining alongside the other rather than in isolation.
When it activates
These themes come forward during the 5th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. For a trikona lord in a wealth house, those periods generally support earning through judgement and matters connected to children.
For Cancer, Libra and Capricorn the 5th lord is the yogakaraka, so these are the most consequential periods in the chart regardless of the placement.
The strongest windows come when the 5th lord runs alongside the 11th lord, which converts the earning into gains that actually arrive, or the 2nd lord where they are different planets. For Taurus and Scorpio they are the same planet, so its periods carry the creative faculty and the wealth function together, which concentrates the timing considerably.
Jupiter transiting the natal 5th lord or the 2nd house tends to bring financial and creative developments together. Saturn over the same points slows the output and consolidates the earning, which is uncomfortable and generally improves both.
The KP layer
Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.
In KP the 2nd cusp sub-lord decides whether the chart’s wealth and speech themes deliver, and the 5th cusp sub-lord governs children, creative output and speculation. For creative work to produce income rather than only output, the 11th connection matters, since work that does not reach the 11th does not become a gain. KP uses neither yogakaraka status nor Dhana Yoga, both being Parashari concepts. The sub-lord reference tables and the sub-lord theory guide cover the mechanics.
Common misreadings
This is favourable, and it is only sometimes a Dhana Yoga. A formal wealth yoga requires lordship association between a wealth house and a trikona. That holds for Taurus and Scorpio here, and for anyone with a 2nd and 5th lord exchange. For the other ten it is a good placement and the yoga language overstates it.
A wealth yoga indicates capacity, not amount. How much there is depends on dignity, house strength and the periods that run. Plenty of charts carry this configuration and modest finances.
It does not predict children. The placement connects children and family resources as themes. Whether a person has children is not established by any single placement.
Yogakaraka status outranks a neutral dignity. Cancer, Libra and Capricorn all show neutral here and all have the most valuable planet in their chart placed in this position.
Questions people ask
Is the 5th lord in the 2nd house good?
Yes. It places a trikona lord in a wealth house, which is one of the classical wealth positions, and it makes judgement saleable. The main strain is that an idea without a buyer stops feeling real, so work worth making for its own sake tends not to get made.
Which ascendant has the strongest version?
Scorpio. Jupiter rules both the 2nd and the 5th and sits in Sagittarius, its own sign and moolatrikona, so two dignities combine with a doubling that puts a wealth house and a trikona under one lordship. Taurus has the same doubling with Mercury in Gemini. Virgo and Sagittarius both have exaltations.
Is this a Dhana Yoga?
For Taurus and Scorpio ascendants, yes, because one planet rules both a wealth house and a trikona, which is a lordship association. It is also a genuine yoga for anyone whose 2nd and 5th lords have exchanged houses. For the other ten it is a favourable placement rather than a formal yoga.
What if my 2nd lord is also in my 5th house?
Then the two lords have exchanged houses, which forms a parivartana yoga and satisfies the classical Dhana Yoga definition, since exchange counts as association. Both readings are live at once, so read this page alongside the 2nd lord in the 5th house.
Why can I not work on anything without a buyer?
Because your creative faculty sits in the house of value, so worth and price are structurally connected rather than adjacent. It is worth deliberately keeping one piece of work with no commercial purpose attached, because the placement will not produce that on its own.
Should I speculate with family money?
Your chart puts the risk appetite in the house of household resources, so that is the likely pattern rather than a question. What is worth doing is deciding the size of any position in advance and while nothing is going wrong, since the alternative is deciding it in the moment with funds that are not solely yours. Nothing here is financial advice.
When will this placement give results?
During the 5th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha. Windows pairing the 5th lord with the 11th lord are the ones where earning converts into gains that arrive. If you are Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, the 5th lord is your yogakaraka and its periods are the most consequential in your chart.
Want this read in your own chart?
Whether this is a genuine wealth yoga or a favourable placement depends on your lordships, and whether it delivers depends on the periods. Both are worth establishing precisely, along with the exact degree and anything conjoined or aspecting your 5th lord.
