The 4th lord in the 10th house routes home, mother and emotional foundation into the house of career, standing and public action. The base and the profession occupy the same ground: what these natives build domestically and what they build publicly are not separate projects, and the boundary between the two is thin by structure rather than by choice.
Both houses are kendras, and the 10th is also an upachaya, so the arrangement is strong by position and improves with time. Three ascendants gain directional strength here, three have a yogakaraka as their 4th lord, and one lands debilitated.
This page belongs to the 4th lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 4th lord
The 4th lord is the planet ruling the fourth sign from your ascendant. Aries has Cancer, so the Moon. Taurus has Leo, so the Sun. Gemini has Virgo, so Mercury. Cancer has Libra, so Venus. Leo has Scorpio, so Mars. Virgo has Sagittarius, so Jupiter. Libra has Capricorn, so Saturn. Scorpio has Aquarius, also Saturn. Sagittarius has Pisces, so Jupiter. Capricorn has Aries, so Mars. Aquarius has Taurus, so Venus. Pisces has Gemini, so Mercury.
If that planet sits in your 10th house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.
The placement itself
The first thing this placement does is put the home into the career. Working from home, a business run from the premises, property as the profession, or simply a working life arranged around domestic requirements rather than the reverse. These natives do not commute away from their base so much as extend it.
The second is that the emotional foundation is publicly visible. The 4th’s inner condition placed in the most exposed house of the chart means colleagues and clients see more of the native’s domestic state than is usual. A difficult period at home is not a private matter for these people.
The third is that standing rests on the base. Where other placements build reputation on skill, output or association, this one builds it on being settled: the person who has a house, a family, a fixed address, a stable situation. That is a real currency in many fields and it is invisible until it is absent.
The fourth is that property is professional. Buildings, land and premises feature in the working life rather than only in the private one, which is covered in the career section below.
The fifth is that the mother’s influence reaches the career. The 4th is her house, so her expectations, her example or her practical support are part of how the professional life took shape.
All twelve ascendants
The 4th lord is a different planet for every ascendant and lands in a different sign here. Every row below is computed rather than quoted. The Sun and Mars both take their directional strength in the 10th, and the yogakaraka column reflects lordship of both a kendra and a trikona.
| Ascendant | 4th sign | 4th lord | Sits in | Dignity | Digbala | Yogakaraka | Also rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Cancer | Moon | Capricorn | neutral | no | no | only the 4th |
| Taurus | Leo | Sun | Aquarius | neutral | yes | no | only the 4th |
| Gemini | Virgo | Mercury | Pisces | debilitated | no | no | 1st |
| Cancer | Libra | Venus | Aries | neutral | no | no | 11th |
| Leo | Scorpio | Mars | Taurus | neutral | yes | yes | 9th |
| Virgo | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Gemini | neutral | no | no | 7th |
| Libra | Capricorn | Saturn | Cancer | neutral | no | yes | 5th |
| Scorpio | Aquarius | Saturn | Leo | neutral | no | no | 3rd |
| Sagittarius | Pisces | Jupiter | Virgo | neutral | no | no | 1st |
| Capricorn | Aries | Mars | Libra | neutral | yes | no | 11th |
| Aquarius | Taurus | Venus | Scorpio | neutral | no | yes | 9th |
| Pisces | Gemini | Mercury | Sagittarius | neutral | no | no | 7th |
Leo ascendant is the strongest of the twelve. Mars is Leo’s yogakaraka, ruling the 4th and the 9th, and the 10th is where Mars gains directional strength. Yogakaraka status and digbala together, in the career house, on a chart where that planet’s periods are already the most consequential available. Neutral dignity in Taurus understates it substantially, and a reading based on the dignity column alone would pass over the best configuration on the page.
Libra and Aquarius also have yogakaraka 4th lords, Saturn and Venus respectively, both neutral by sign. The same point applies: lordship status outranks a neutral dignity, and for these ascendants the placement carries far more weight than the table suggests.
Taurus and Capricorn gain directional strength without any sign dignity. The Sun for Taurus and Mars for Capricorn both operate at full effect in the 10th, which is invisible to a reading that considers only exaltation and own sign.
Gemini ascendant is the one debilitation. Mercury falls in Pisces, its debilitation sign, which is the 10th from Gemini, and Mercury also rules the 1st for this ascendant, so the lagna lord and the foundation lord are the same debilitated planet. Everything the 1st lord in the 10th house describes for Gemini and everything here concern the same planet in the same position.
Mercury is the planet of definition and Pisces dissolves outlines, so what this commonly describes is a working life that is hard to summarise and a domestic base that is hard to separate from it. The capability is present and the packaging is not. Check for neecha bhanga and note where Jupiter sits as dispositor.
Aries and Taurus carry no second lordship, the Moon and Sun ruling one sign each. Cancer and Capricorn carry the 11th, which is the strongest financial pairing here since it connects standing and home to gains. Leo and Aquarius carry the 9th, Virgo and Pisces the 7th, Gemini and Sagittarius the 1st, and Scorpio the 3rd.
A note on kendradhipati
Virgo and Pisces ascendants have their 4th lord ruling the 4th and the 7th, both kendras and neither a trikona, with a natural benefic in each case. That meets the condition for kendradhipati dosha, which holds that natural benefics ruling only angular houses lose part of their benefic capacity.
The point worth making here is one of scope. The dosha is a lordship condition rather than a placement one, so it attaches to those two ascendants wherever their 4th lord sits, on every page of this series rather than only where it is discussed. It is set out in full on the 4th lord in the 7th house page, where those same two ascendants also have the lord sitting in a house it rules.
What it means in practice is that it qualifies rather than cancels, and that the effect is held to be strongest for Jupiter, then Venus, then Mercury. A planet in strong dignity is not meaningfully diminished by it.
Mother and career
The 4th is the mother’s house and the 10th is the profession, so this placement connects them directly, and the connection is usually visible in the life rather than theoretical.
The commonest patterns are a mother whose own work shaped what the native considered possible, a career chosen to meet a standard she set, or practical support from her that made the professional path viable. Where a family business exists, this placement frequently puts the native in it alongside her.
Where the lord is well placed, the transmission is straightforward and generally an advantage: a working example absorbed early. Where it is weaker, it more often shows as a career pursued to satisfy an expectation that was never examined, and natives frequently reach mid-career before noticing whose measure they have been meeting.
That is a statement about how the situation landed for the native rather than a verdict on the mother. A chart does not establish what anybody else did or intended. Mother matters generally are read from the 4th house, its lord and the Moon together.
Where it strains
Home and work do not separate. This is the structural difficulty. There is no boundary to maintain because the chart does not supply one, so professional pressure enters the house and domestic difficulty enters the work. Natives with this placement should build the separation deliberately, since waiting for it to arise naturally does not work.
Private life is publicly legible. With the emotional base in the most exposed house, colleagues and clients see the domestic weather. That is honest and it removes a form of control other people have.
Standing depends on being settled. Reputation built on stability is reputation that a domestic disruption damages, which means a move, a separation or a family difficulty carries a professional cost that seems disproportionate to anyone outside.
The upachaya wait applies. The 10th improves with time, so the professional return on this arrangement arrives later than expected. Someone at thirty comparing their standing against peers is reading the front half of a curve.
Career and work
The career signature here is more specific than most, because the 4th’s significations point directly at industries.
Property and real estate in every form: development, agency, management, surveying, conveyancing. Construction and architecture. Interiors and furnishing. Agriculture and land management.
Hospitality, hotels and restaurants, where the premises and the business are the same thing.
Education, particularly at the school level and particularly in administration and institutional management, since the 4th governs early schooling.
Care work and institutional settings where people are housed.
Home-based enterprise recurs strongly and works well: the practice attached to the dwelling, the business run from the premises, the arrangement where the base and the earning are physically the same place.
The friction is with careers requiring frequent relocation or long absence, which cut against the placement’s own logic.
The second lordship shapes direction. Cancer and Capricorn have the 11th, the strongest financial pairing here. Leo and Aquarius have the 9th with yogakaraka status, pointing at institutions and education. Virgo and Pisces have the 7th, suiting partnership businesses in property or hospitality.
Health
This placement links the 4th’s regions, the chest and heart area, with the 10th’s, the knees and joints.
The practical content is ordinary. Anything persistent in the chest belongs with a doctor, and knee and joint complaints warrant attention rather than tolerance, particularly given how often this placement produces physically demanding property and construction work. This site does not predict illness or longevity from placements.
The observation worth having is that with home and work occupying the same ground, there is nowhere to recover. Other people leave the job and go somewhere else; these natives arrive at the place the pressure already reached. That is worth recognising, because the fatigue accumulates without an obvious cause and gets investigated as a health matter when it is a boundary matter.
When it activates
These themes come forward during the 4th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. The 10th’s upachaya character means later periods deliver more than early ones.
For Leo, Libra and Aquarius these are the most consequential periods in the chart, since the 4th lord is the yogakaraka. For Leo in particular, with digbala as well, the periods are unusually well supported.
The strongest windows come when the 4th lord runs alongside the 11th lord, which converts standing into gains, or the 10th lord where they are different planets. Property specifically tends to move when the 4th lord pairs with the 11th or the 2nd.
Jupiter transiting the natal 4th lord or the 10th house tends to bring professional advancement and domestic improvement together. Saturn over the same points restructures both, which is uncomfortable and generally leaves the arrangement sounder.
The KP layer
Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.
KP uses neither yogakaraka status nor kendradhipati dosha, both being Parashari concepts, so the two systems will not agree on which planet matters most. Property purchase is a 4th cusp sub-lord question requiring the 4th, 11th and 12th. Promotion and job change are read through the 10th cusp sub-lord signifying the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th. A strong 4th lord in the 10th with an unsupported 11th connection is the standard configuration behind increased responsibility arriving without increased reward. The 4th cusp sub-lord property guide and the sub-lord theory guide cover the mechanics.
Common misreadings
The dignity column understates half this page. Three ascendants have directional strength and three have yogakaraka status, mostly with neutral dignity. A reading that considers only exaltation and own sign would conclude this is a weak grid, and it is one of the stronger ones.
Kendra to kendra is not a yoga. Both houses being angular makes the placement structurally strong. It does not constitute a Raj Yoga, which requires association between a kendra lord and a trikona lord.
Standing is not the same as wealth. The 10th gives position and reputation. Whether either converts into retained money is a 2nd and 11th house question.
Debilitation is not career failure. For Gemini the lagna lord and 4th lord arrive together debilitated in the 10th. That describes a working life that is hard to summarise rather than one that fails, and it should be read alongside the 1st lord page for the same ascendant.
Questions people ask
Is the 4th lord in the 10th house good?
Yes. It places a kendra lord in the strongest kendra, and the 10th is also an upachaya so the arrangement improves with time. It suits property, hospitality, education and any enterprise run from a fixed base. The main strain is that home and work occupy the same ground, so there is no boundary unless you build one.
Which ascendant has the strongest version?
Leo. Mars is Leo’s yogakaraka and the 10th is where Mars gains directional strength, so lordship status and digbala combine in the career house. Neutral dignity in Taurus understates it considerably. Libra and Aquarius also have yogakaraka 4th lords.
Why do work problems follow me home?
Because your foundation lord sits in the house of profession, so the two are structurally the same ground rather than adjacent territories. There is no natural boundary in the chart, which means it has to be constructed deliberately, and waiting for one to appear does not work.
Is this a good placement for working from home?
It is one of the best. The placement puts the base and the profession in the same location, so a practice attached to the dwelling or a business run from the premises is the arrangement your chart is already describing.
Why does a domestic upheaval affect my professional standing?
Because your reputation rests partly on being settled, which is a real currency and one that is invisible until it is disturbed. A move or a family difficulty therefore carries a professional cost that looks disproportionate from outside.
Does kendradhipati dosha apply to me?
If you are Virgo or Pisces ascendant, yes, because your 4th lord rules two kendras and no trikona. It applies wherever that lord sits rather than only in particular houses, it qualifies rather than cancels, and a planet in strong dignity is not meaningfully affected.
When will this placement give results?
During the 4th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with later periods delivering more given the 10th’s upachaya character. If you are Leo, Libra or Aquarius those periods are the most consequential in your chart.
Want this read in your own chart?
On this page the dignity column is the least informative part of the picture, since directional strength and yogakaraka status carry more weight. Sorting out which factor dominates in your chart takes the exact degree, the second house your 4th lord rules, and which dasha you are running.
