The 11th lord in the 1st house brings gains, income, friends, networks and desire into the house of the self. What these natives want is part of how they are constituted, not something they arrived at, and the wanting is visible to everybody who meets them.
This is the first page of the 11th lord series, so it also sets out the technical facts that hold across all twelve. One ascendant lands exalted, four gain directional strength, and two land debilitated.
This page belongs to the 11th lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 11th lord
The 11th lord is the planet ruling the eleventh sign from your ascendant. Aries has Aquarius, so Saturn. Taurus has Pisces, so Jupiter. Gemini has Aries, so Mars. Cancer has Taurus, so Venus. Leo has Gemini, so Mercury. Virgo has Cancer, so the Moon. Libra has Leo, so the Sun. Scorpio has Virgo, so Mercury. Sagittarius has Libra, so Venus. Capricorn has Scorpio, so Mars. Aquarius has Sagittarius, so Jupiter. Pisces has Capricorn, so Saturn.
If that planet sits in your 1st house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.
What the 11th lord carries
The 11th is labha bhava, the house of gain, and its lord carries income and profit from any source, gains of every kind, friends and social networks, elder siblings, professional and social associations, the fulfilment of desires, and the shins and ankles.
Its defining function is that something reaches a person and stays. Every other house can produce a benefit; the 11th is where that benefit arrives and becomes the native’s own. That is why this cluster has repeatedly pointed here: a strong house with no route to the 11th produces conditions rather than results.
Structurally the 11th is an upachaya house, so its subjects improve with application rather than arriving complete. It is also a kama house, one of the three concerned with desire, which is where its difficulty lies. The 11th meets a want and produces the next one, and no amount of gain closes the loop, because generating the next want is what the house does.
Three facts for this series
Three technical points hold across all twelve pages of the 11th lord, stated once here.
No ascendant has a yogakaraka 11th lord. Yogakaraka status requires a planet to rule both a kendra and a trikona, and the 11th is neither, so the second lordship would have to supply both. No sign pairing produces that. This series therefore has no equivalent of the yogakaraka thread that ran through the 9th and 10th lord pages.
Kendradhipati dosha never applies. The doctrine concerns benefics ruling only angular houses, and an 11th lord rules a non-angular house by definition, so the condition cannot be met for any ascendant.
Raja Yoga is not available through the 11th lord alone. The condition requires a kendra lord associating with a trikona lord. No 11th lord rules a trikona in any chart, so this planet cannot supply the trikona half. Three ascendants have an 11th lord that also rules a kendra, Aries with the 10th and Cancer and Capricorn with the 4th, and for them the planet can supply the kendra half if it associates with a trikona lord. That is a real distinction and worth keeping.
The placement itself
The first thing this placement does is make desire part of the identity. These natives are known for wanting things, and they do not experience that as a criticism.
The second is that the social circle forms around them. The 11th’s network function in the house of the self produces people who are the centre of a group rather than members of one.
The third is that they gain through being themselves. Income and opportunity arrive because of who the native is rather than through a structure, which is efficient and unusually dependent on presence.
The fourth is that ambition is legible early. What these natives want is apparent from adolescence, and the working life is generally an attempt to get it rather than a discovery of what it might be.
The fifth is the upachaya schedule. The 11th rewards application, so gains accumulate across decades, and the difference between thirty and fifty is substantial.
All twelve ascendants
The 11th lord is a different planet for every ascendant. Because it lands in the 1st here, it always occupies the ascendant sign itself. Every row below is computed rather than quoted. Mercury and Jupiter both take their directional strength in the lagna, and no ascendant has a yogakaraka 11th lord, so that column is omitted throughout this series.
| Ascendant | 11th sign | 11th lord | Dignity | Digbala | Also rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aquarius | Saturn | debilitated | no | 10th |
| Taurus | Pisces | Jupiter | neutral | yes | 8th |
| Gemini | Aries | Mars | neutral | no | 6th |
| Cancer | Taurus | Venus | neutral | no | 4th |
| Leo | Gemini | Mercury | neutral | yes | 2nd |
| Virgo | Cancer | Moon | neutral | no | only the 11th |
| Libra | Leo | Sun | debilitated | no | only the 11th |
| Scorpio | Virgo | Mercury | neutral | yes | 8th |
| Sagittarius | Libra | Venus | neutral | no | 6th |
| Capricorn | Scorpio | Mars | exalted | no | 4th |
| Aquarius | Sagittarius | Jupiter | neutral | yes | 2nd |
| Pisces | Capricorn | Saturn | neutral | no | 12th |
Capricorn ascendant is the strongest of the twelve. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, which is the lagna itself, and Mars also rules the 4th, a kendra. An exalted 11th lord in the house of the self produces natives whose ambition is not merely present but effective: they want things and they go directly at them, and the directness is what most people notice first.
Four ascendants gain directional strength. Jupiter for Taurus and Aquarius, Mercury for Leo and Scorpio, each operating at full effect in the lagna. Digbala is a positional strength rather than a dignity, so it does not appear in the dignity column, and on this page it is the commonest advantage.
The temperaments differ. Jupiter in the lagna makes the Taurus and Aquarius versions expansive and socially generous, with a wide circle. Mercury makes the Leo and Scorpio versions articulate and transactional, with a circle that is useful as well as friendly.
Aries and Libra land debilitated. For Aries, Saturn falls in Aries and also rules the 10th; Saturn works slowly and Aries wants immediacy, so what the native wants is pursued faster than it was planned for. For Libra, the Sun falls in Libra and rules nothing but the 11th, so the whole gain function arrives weakened with nothing offsetting it: the Sun asserts and Libra defers, so these natives do not press their own claim in circles that would grant it. Check for neecha bhanga in both cases and note the dispositor.
Aries, Cancer and Capricorn have an 11th lord that also rules a kendra, the 10th for Aries and the 4th for the other two. That matters for Raja Yoga as set out above: the planet can supply the kendra half of the condition where it associates with a trikona lord.
Taurus and Scorpio carry the 8th, which directs gains toward inheritance and joint resources. Gemini and Sagittarius carry the 6th, tying income to service and competition. Leo and Aquarius carry the 2nd, which places both wealth houses with one planet and is the strongest commercial pairing here. Pisces carries the 12th.
Virgo and Libra carry no second lordship, the Moon and Sun ruling one sign each, giving the cleanest readings in this series.
Where it strains
The wanting is constitutional. Where the lord of desire occupies the house of the self, satisfaction is structurally unavailable: each thing obtained produces the next want, and the mechanism is not a flaw in the native’s character but the house doing its work.
Everything depends on presence. Gains arriving because of who the native is means gains that stop when the native is not there, and this configuration builds very little that runs without them.
The circle is drawn to the person, not held by them. A network that forms around somebody disperses when they change, and these natives are frequently surprised by how quickly a circle they thought was theirs turns out to have been situational.
Ambition read early is ambition never examined. Where what a person wants was apparent from adolescence, the question of whether they still want it tends not to get asked, and the working life proceeds on a decision made by somebody much younger.
Career and work
The natural fit is any work where the individual is the proposition. Independent practice, personal brands, agency and representation, and roles where clients come for a named person.
Sales and business development suit this placement directly, since the 11th’s subject is what comes in and the 1st supplies the person who brings it.
Networking-intensive professions recur: recruitment, brokerage, partnerships, and anything where the contact book is the asset.
Founding a business fits, particularly where the founder remains the face of it.
Social and membership organisations appear more often here than chance would suggest, following the 11th’s association function.
The second lordship shapes direction. Leo and Aquarius have the 2nd, placing both wealth houses with one planet. Aries has the 10th, tying gains to profession. Cancer and Capricorn have the 4th, Taurus and Scorpio the 8th, Gemini and Sagittarius the 6th, Pisces the 12th.
Health
This placement links the 11th’s regions, the shins, ankles and left ear, with the 1st’s general constitution.
The practical content is ordinary. Shin and ankle complaints warrant attention rather than tolerance, and anything persistent belongs with a doctor. This site does not predict illness or longevity from any placement.
The observation that does belong follows from the dependence on presence. Where income arrives because the native is personally there, being unavailable has an immediate financial cost, so appointments get deferred and symptoms get worked around. That is a financial calculation being made without being acknowledged as one, and naming it is most of the correction. The circle described above is an asset here: somebody in it is usually positioned to notice, and letting them say so rather than deflecting it is worth more than any resolution to be careful.
When it activates
These themes come forward during the 11th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. The 11th being an upachaya house, later periods deliver considerably more than early ones.
These periods characteristically bring gains that attach to the person: a rise in income, a network that opens, recognition within a circle, or something wanted for a long time actually arriving.
The strongest windows come when the 11th lord runs alongside the 2nd lord, so that gains are retained rather than spent, or the 10th lord, which supplies the standing that gains follow from.
Jupiter transiting the natal 11th lord or the lagna expands both the circle and what comes through it. Saturn over the same points prunes both and slows the pace, which for an upachaya placement is generally where the accumulation begins to consolidate.
The KP layer
Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.
The 11th is the most important house in KP, and this needs saying plainly at the start of the series. It is the confirming house for almost every positive outcome: marriage requires the 7th cusp sub-lord to signify the 2nd, 7th and 11th, professional change requires the 10th cusp to signify the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th, wealth requires the 2nd cusp to signify the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th, and a dispute is won when the 6th cusp signifies the 6th and 11th. The 11th appears in every one.
What that reflects is the same principle the Parashari reading gives: the 11th is where something reaches a person and stays. The two systems disagree about a great deal and agree about this.
The alignment is not a shortcut, since the cusp sub-lord is determined by the exact degree of the cusp rather than by any house placement. The sub-lord theory guide covers the mechanics.
Common misreadings
No 11th lord is a yogakaraka. The status requires ruling a kendra and a trikona together, and no sign pairing produces that for this lord. Material claiming otherwise is in error.
The 11th lord cannot supply Raja Yoga’s trikona half. Three ascendants have an 11th lord that also rules a kendra and can supply that half, which is a different and more limited claim.
Gains are not amounts. The placement describes how income arrives and what it attaches to. No chart determines financial outcomes, and nothing here is financial advice.
Directional strength is not dignity. Four ascendants gain digbala here at neutral dignity, which is a positional strength and a real one.
Questions people ask
Is the 11th lord in the 1st house good?
Yes. It puts the lord of gain in the house of the self, so income and opportunity arrive because of who you are, and the social circle forms around you. The strain is that the same arrangement makes satisfaction structurally unavailable, since each thing obtained produces the next want.
Which ascendant has the strongest version?
Capricorn, with Mars exalted in the lagna and also ruling the 4th. Four ascendants gain directional strength, which does not appear as a dignity and is the commonest advantage on this page.
Is my 11th lord a yogakaraka?
No ascendant has one. Yogakaraka status requires ruling a kendra and a trikona together, and no chart produces that combination for the 11th lord. If you have read otherwise, that source is wrong.
Why am I never satisfied?
Because the house of desire holds its lord in your house of self, so wanting is part of how you are constituted rather than a response to circumstances. Each gain produces the next want, and that is the house working correctly rather than a defect in you.
Why does everything stop when I step away?
Because gains arrive through your presence rather than through a structure. That is efficient and it means very little runs without you, which is worth building around deliberately rather than discovering during an absence.
Why do my friendships not survive changes in my life?
Because a circle that formed around you is held together by you, so it disperses when you change. That is not a judgement on anybody, and it explains why the surprise recurs.
When will this placement give results?
During the 11th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with later periods delivering considerably more given the 11th’s upachaya character. Windows pairing the 11th lord with the 2nd lord are where gains are retained rather than spent.
Want this read in your own chart?
On this page the dignity column tells you less than usual, since directional strength is the commonest advantage and does not appear there. What settles delivery is the exact degree, anything conjoined or aspecting your 11th lord, what else it rules, and which dasha you are running.
