Distance is a house before it is a circumstance. The twelfth is the far and the foreign, the place beyond the native’s borders; the ninth is the long journey and the other tradition; the third is the short distance and the communication that crosses any distance at all; and a long-distance relationship is the twelfth or the ninth standing on the seventh, where the partner lives, so that the bond is carried by a house whose nature is to be elsewhere. That is why some charts fall in love across distance repeatedly and why some relationships that begin close are made distant by a job, a visa or a family: the seventh lord was in the twelfth all along and the distance was waiting for its period. The chart answers the three questions a long-distance couple asks, in the order they ask them. Will it survive, which the seventh lord’s dignity and the third house’s communication decide. Who moves, which the fourth and twelfth lords’ periods decide, since the partner whose twelfth lord’s period is running is the one who goes and the one whose fourth lord’s is running is the one who stays. And when the distance closes, which Jupiter over the fourth or seventh gives within the carrying sub-period. This article reads the three, with the signatures of distance in a table and a chart in which the home and the partner share one lord in the twelfth.
It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. The move itself, the settlement, the visa and the country, belong to the foreign cluster and begin at the complete foreign settlement guide; the partner from another country as a family matter is the earlier page, Family Opposition to Love Marriage; and the native who loves best at a distance and hesitates at a bond that is near is read in Commitment Phobia in the Chart.
Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha; the seventh house as the partner, the twelfth as the foreign and the far, the ninth as the long journey, the third as communication, the fourth as the home the native stays in or leaves; transits of Jupiter and Saturn over the fourth and seventh. Distance is read as a house carrying the bond and as a period, never as a verdict on the relationship. The partner’s side is read from the partner’s chart when it is available.

Will it survive, who moves, and when: the distance has a period.
A relationship consultation reads your seventh and third for whether the bond survives the distance, your fourth and twelfth lords' periods for who moves and who stays, and Jupiter's transit for the season the distance closes; with your partner's chart it reads whether both of you are moving, and where you meet.

The houses of distance: the twelfth, the ninth and the third
The twelfth house is the far, the foreign and the unseen, and a seventh lord placed there, or a twelfth lord on the seventh, gives the partner who is beyond the native’s borders, geographically or otherwise; it is read in the seventh lord in the twelfth and the twelfth lord in the seventh, and the twelfth’s whole range, loss, the foreign and release, in the twelfth lord in the twelve houses. The ninth is the long journey, the other tradition and the far city within the same country, and the seventh lord there, in the seventh lord in the ninth, gives the partner met on a journey or from a distant place who is not necessarily foreign. The third is the short distance and the communication that crosses any distance, the calls, the messages, the letters, and its lord’s condition, in the third lord in the twelve houses, is the one that decides whether a distance is survivable, since a relationship at a distance is made of the third house entirely. Venus in the twelfth, in Venus in the twelfth, gives the love that is far or private; Rahu on the seventh gives the partner from another country outright. A chart with the seventh lord in the twelfth or ninth is the chart of the native who will have a long-distance relationship whether they seek one or not, and the reading tells them so before the job offer comes.
The kinds of distance: born far, made far, kept far
The relationship born far, begun across a distance, online, on a journey, abroad, is the twelfth or ninth on the seventh delivering its nature at the start; the distance is the relationship’s condition and the question is whether it ever closes. The relationship made far, begun close and separated by a job, a visa, a family’s decision, is the twelfth lord’s sub-period arriving in a relationship that lived in the fifth or seventh; the distance is a season and the question is whether the relationship survives the season, which is a breakup question of the kind the breakup page reads, with the twelfth lord’s sub-period as the ending that came by departure. And the relationship kept far, in which one or both prefer the distance and the closing of it is the crisis, is the seventh lord in the twelfth natal, the native who loves at a distance and finds nearness a loss; its question is not whether the distance closes but whether the relationship survives its closing. The three kinds have different readings and the couple usually know which they are, and the reading’s first sentence names it, since the born-far couple wants a date, the made-far couple wants to know whether the season ends, and the kept-far couple needs to be told, kindly, that the distance is the relationship’s shape and not its problem.
Will it survive: the seventh lord and the third house
A long-distance relationship survives on two things in the chart: a seventh lord strong enough to hold a bond that is not fed by presence, and a third house strong enough to carry the bond across the distance. The seventh lord in dignity, in a kendra or trikona, unafflicted, holds; a seventh lord in the twelfth holds because the distance is its element; a seventh lord in the sixth or eighth does not, because the distance becomes the quarrel or the crisis that those houses were waiting for. The third lord dignified, or Mercury strong, or benefics in the third, gives the couple who talk every day and are closer at four thousand kilometres than some couples in one house; the third lord afflicted, or Ketu in the third, gives the silence that the distance fills, and the relationship that ends without a fight because nobody called. Then the period: a relationship crossing a distance inside its own carrying sub-period survives it as a season, and one crossing it at a change of sub-period into the twelfth lord’s has the distance as its ending, which is the sub-period check the breakup page makes. Survival, read from these three, is a probability with a shape, and the reading gives it as one: a strong seventh lord and third with the period intact is the couple that should hold on, and a weak third with the period changing is the couple that should hear the ending named.
Who moves: the fourth lord against the twelfth lord
Every long-distance relationship that closes closes because someone moves, and the chart says who from the fourth and twelfth lords’ periods. The fourth is the home, the native’s own ground, and the fourth lord’s sub-period is the season in which the native stays, builds, buys or returns; the twelfth is the foreign, and the twelfth lord’s sub-period is the season in which the native goes, read in which dasha gives foreign settlement. The partner whose twelfth lord’s period is running, or whose ninth lord’s is, is the one whose chart is moving; the partner whose fourth lord’s is running is the one whose chart is staying; and a couple with one of each has the shape that closes the distance, one going to the other. A couple with both fourth lords running has two charts staying, and the distance does not close in that period; a couple with both twelfth lords running has two charts moving, and they meet in a third place, which is the couple that both emigrate. The fourth lord in the twelfth, in one chart, gives the home that is abroad, the native who settles far and does not return, and it decides the question alone: that native moves and the other, if the relationship holds, follows. The Rahu connection to settlement, the native pulled abroad by the appetite for the foreign, is in Rahu and foreign settlement, and Rahu on the seventh is the partner who is the foreign.
Nine signatures of distance, and whether each closes
| Signature | What the distance is | Does it close |
|---|---|---|
| 7th lord in the 12th | The partner beyond the border; the bond that lives at a distance | Closes by the native moving, in the 12th lord’s or 7th lord’s sub-period; nearness may unsettle it |
| 12th lord in the 7th | The foreign brought into the partnership | Closes by the partner coming, or by marriage abroad |
| 7th lord in the 9th | The partner from a far place, a journey or another tradition | Closes in the 9th lord’s sub-period, often by the native travelling |
| Venus in the 12th | The love that is far, private or in another country | Closes late, in Venus’s sub-period, and often stays half-private |
| Rahu on the 7th | The partner from another country outright | Closes by one emigrating; Rahu decides which by its dispositor’s period |
| 4th lord in the 12th | The native’s own home is abroad | Closes by the native settling far; the other follows or the bond ends |
| 12th lord’s sub-period in a close relationship | Distance made by a job, visa or family; a season | Closes when the sub-period ends, if the 7th and 3rd hold through it |
| 3rd lord afflicted, or Ketu in the 3rd | The distance that silence fills | Rarely; the relationship ends without a fight |
| Saturn transiting the 7th during the distance | The two and a half years of test | Closes after Saturn leaves, if at all; endings under it hold |
The third column is the reading’s use: three of the nine close by the native moving, two by the partner, two by a season ending, and two not at all, and a couple who know which row they are in know who has to pack.
The relationship that lives on distance
Some relationships are made of distance and end when it ends, and the chart reads them before the couple discovers it. The seventh lord in the twelfth, Venus in the twelfth, or the seventh lord with Ketu gives the native who loves best across a distance, for whom the bond is safest when it cannot be tested daily, and whose long-distance relationship is the happiest they have had precisely because it is long-distance. The crisis in these charts comes when the distance closes: the move made, the visa granted, the two in one flat, and the seventh lord in the twelfth discovering that the partner it loved at four thousand kilometres is a stranger at four metres. The reading of such a chart does not tell the couple not to close the distance; it tells them that the closing is the relationship’s test rather than its reward, that the first year of nearness is the season to watch, and that a native with this signature does well with a partner who also has a life of their own, travel in the work, a home in two places. It also says, for the reader who recognises themselves, that loving at a distance is a shape and not a failure, and that the chart’s marriages with this signature are often the ones with two cities in them.
The third house: what keeps the bond alive
A relationship at a distance is a third-house relationship, since everything that passes between the two passes through communication, and the third lord and Mercury are read for the relationship’s nourishment. The third lord dignified, Mercury unafflicted, or the Moon in the third gives the couple whose calls are the relationship’s body, who know each other’s days, and who arrive at the closing of the distance already living together in every way but one. The third lord afflicted, Mercury combust or with Saturn, or Ketu in the third gives the couple whose calls thin out, whose messages become logistics, and whose distance becomes the silence the third house could not fill; it is the commonest way a long-distance relationship ends, and it ends without an event, which is why the couple cannot say what happened. The third lord’s sub-period is the season in which the communication is strongest, and a long-distance couple should be told when it runs, since it is the season to plan the visits and the decisions; Mercury retrograde in transit over the third or seventh is the month the messages go wrong and the couple should not decide anything in. The reading of the third here is not about the partner’s feelings but about the channel, and a couple with a weak channel and strong feeling is told to build the channel, which is advice the chart can give without pretending to read the heart.
When the distance closes: Jupiter over the fourth or seventh
The distance closes in a sub-period and a transit. The sub-period is the twelfth lord’s, for the native who moves; the fourth lord’s, for the native who is joined at home; the seventh lord’s or Venus’s, for the couple who marry and the marriage closes it; and the ninth lord’s for the closing that comes by a journey rather than a settlement. The transit is Jupiter’s: over the fourth, in Jupiter’s transit through the fourth, for the home that receives the partner or is made abroad; over the seventh, in Jupiter’s transit through the seventh, for the year the partnership becomes daily; over the twelfth for the year of the move itself. Saturn over the seventh or the fourth, in Saturn’s transit through the fourth, is the two and a half years in which the distance is tested and not closed, and a couple under it should be told the date it ends rather than promised a closing inside it. Rahu’s transit over the seventh, in Rahu through the seventh, is the season of the foreign partner’s arrival or the native’s pull abroad. The reading names a window of a few months, the sub-period with the transit inside it, and says who moves in it, which is the only form of “when will we be together” that a chart can give without pretending.
Two charts: both moving, one moving, neither
With both charts the reading becomes exact, because the question of who moves is answered by two dasha tables side by side. One chart in its twelfth lord’s or ninth lord’s period and the other in its fourth lord’s is the couple that closes the distance by one going to the other, and the reading says which and when. Both charts in twelfth lord periods is the couple that both go, and meet in a third place, the couple who emigrate together or separately to the same country; both in fourth lord periods is the couple that both stay, and the distance does not close in those periods, which the couple should be told plainly so that they can decide whether to wait for the next. The synastry adds whether the bond is the kind that survives distance: the two seventh lords in each other’s charts, or the Moon of one on the seventh of the other, gives the bond that presence does not have to feed, read in Synastry in Vedic Astrology; a Venus-Mars contact alone gives the attraction that distance starves. And the two charts say what one cannot: whether the partner’s chart is the one that lives on distance, so that the native who is packing to close it should know what the closing will test.
The visa, the settlement and the country
The mechanics of the move belong to the foreign cluster and are not repeated here: whether the native’s chart carries settlement at all, in the foreign settlement indicators; the chart that does not, in the signs of no foreign settlement; and the visa as a horary question, in the visa horary guide, which is the form the question most often takes when the wedding is booked and the paperwork is not. What this page adds is the relationship’s reading of those pages: a native whose chart does not carry settlement, in a relationship with a partner who cannot come, has a distance that closes only by the partner moving, and the reading says so before the applications begin; a native with the fourth lord in the twelfth and a partner whose chart is all fourth house has a home abroad and a partner who will not leave theirs, which is the mismatch of the section above and the reading names it. The country is the twelfth lord’s sign and dispositor, and the direction of the partner’s home in the seventh lord’s, and a couple who ask which of two countries will be theirs can be given the chart’s answer, which is usually the one whose lord is stronger in the two charts.
A worked chart: the home and the partner in one lord, in the twelfth
A Pisces lagna woman, particulars altered. For Pisces, Mercury rules both the fourth and the seventh, Gemini and Virgo, so the home and the partner share one lord, and that lord sits in Aquarius in the twelfth, with the Sun, lord of the sixth: the home and the partner both beyond the border, in one placement. Rahu sits in Virgo in the seventh, the partner from another country outright, with Ketu in the lagna. Saturn, lord of the eleventh and twelfth, sits in Leo in the sixth. Jupiter, lord of the lagna and tenth, sits in Sagittarius in the tenth, its own sign. Venus, lord of the third and eighth, sits in Capricorn in the eleventh. The Moon, lord of the fifth, sits in Taurus in the third, exalted: the communication house holding an exalted Moon, the channel strong. Mars, lord of the second and ninth, sits in Aries in the second, its own sign. Four signatures from the table: the seventh lord in the twelfth, Rahu on the seventh, the fourth lord in the twelfth, and, against the grain, a strong third.
She met him abroad, in Mercury-Mercury, on a year of study, the fourth and seventh lord’s own sub-period in the twelfth delivering both its meanings at once, the home elsewhere and the partner from elsewhere. Mercury-Ketu, the Ketu in her lagna, was the return home and the first separation, twelve months of distance that the exalted Moon in the third carried; the reading, given in that sub-period, made the survival check first: the seventh lord dignified enough in Aquarius, the third lord Venus in the eleventh and an exalted Moon in the third itself, the relationship inside its own major period, and said the distance would hold. Then the who-moves check: her fourth lord is her seventh lord and it sits in the twelfth, so her home is abroad and the distance closes by her going; his chart, read beside hers, had its fourth lord in its own fourth, the man who stays. One moving chart and one staying chart, the shape that closes. Mercury-Venus, the third lord’s sub-period, was the three years of the relationship as a channel, the visits, the calls, and Venus as the eighth lord too, the two crises in it, both survived; Mercury-Sun, the sixth lord’s sub-period with the Sun in the twelfth beside Mercury, was the paperwork, the visa struggle, the sixth’s obstacles in the foreign; and Mercury-Moon, the exalted third-house Moon’s seventeen months, with Jupiter transiting Gemini, her fourth, was the closing, the move, the home abroad, and the marriage there, the fourth lord’s transit over the fourth giving the home in the country the twelfth had always pointed to. She was thirty. The reading had said: it survives, you move, in the Moon’s sub-period with Jupiter over the fourth, and the marriage is abroad; and the one caution it added, from Ketu in her lagna, was that the first year of nearness would ask her to become a different person in a different country, which the exalted Moon in the third, the communication with home, would carry. It did.
Frequently asked questions
Which house indicates a long-distance relationship?
The twelfth, the far and the foreign, and the ninth, the long journey and the other tradition, standing on the seventh where the partner lives: the seventh lord in the twelfth or ninth, the twelfth lord in the seventh, Venus in the twelfth, or Rahu on the seventh for the partner from another country. The third house, communication, is the one that decides whether the distance is survivable, since a relationship at a distance is made of the third house entirely.
Will my long-distance relationship work according to astrology?
It survives on a seventh lord strong enough to hold a bond not fed by presence, a third house strong enough to carry it across the distance, and a period that is not changing into the twelfth lord’s. A dignified seventh lord with a strong third lord or Mercury, inside the relationship’s own carrying sub-period, is the couple that should hold on; a seventh lord in the sixth or eighth, or a third lord afflicted or Ketu in the third, is the relationship that the distance turns into a quarrel, a crisis or a silence.
Who will move, me or my partner, according to the chart?
The partner whose twelfth lord’s or ninth lord’s period is running is the one whose chart is moving; the partner whose fourth lord’s period is running is the one whose chart is staying; one of each is the shape that closes the distance. The fourth lord in the twelfth decides it alone, since that native’s home is abroad and they settle far. Both charts in twelfth lord periods meet in a third country; both in fourth lord periods stay where they are and the distance does not close in those periods.
When will the distance close and we will be together?
In the twelfth lord’s sub-period for the native who moves, the fourth lord’s for the one joined at home, the seventh lord’s or Venus’s when a marriage closes it, and the ninth lord’s when a journey does; with Jupiter transiting the fourth, the seventh or the twelfth as the year. Saturn transiting the seventh or fourth is the two and a half years in which the distance is tested rather than closed, and the couple should be given the date it leaves.
What does the 7th lord in the 12th house mean for relationships?
The partner beyond the border and the bond that lives at a distance: the native who meets partners abroad, online or far away, who loves best across a distance, and for whom nearness is the test rather than the reward. The distance closes by the native moving, in the twelfth or seventh lord’s sub-period, and the first year of nearness is the season to watch. It is a shape of loving and not a failure, and its marriages often have two cities in them.
Can a long-distance relationship end in marriage?
Yes, when the seventh lord holds, the third carries, and one chart moves: the marriage falls in the seventh lord’s or Venus’s sub-period with Jupiter over the seventh or fourth, and it is usually held abroad or in the mover’s new home. A relationship at a distance whose marriage window, read by the double-window test with both charts, falls after the distance would have to close needs the move first, and the reading says which comes first, the marriage or the move.
What if my chart shows no foreign settlement but my partner is abroad?
Then the distance closes only by the partner moving, and the reading says so before the applications begin; a native whose chart does not carry settlement, in a relationship with a partner who cannot or will not come, has a distance the chart does not close, and the couple should decide with that in front of them. The settlement question itself, the indicators, the chart that lacks them and the visa as a horary, is the foreign cluster’s and is read there.

Survives or not, who packs, and the season the distance closes.
A relationship consultation reads your seventh and third for the bond's survival across distance, your fourth and twelfth lords' periods for who moves, Jupiter's transit for the closing season, and, with your partner's chart, whether one of you is going, both, or neither, and where you meet.
