Adhi Yoga: Benefics Facing the Moon, and the Commander, Minister and King

Adhi yoga is one of the few yogas the classical texts grade openly, promising a commander, a minister or a king according to its strength. The kundali calculator names it when natural benefics, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, occupy the sixth, seventh and eighth houses counted from the Moon, and under the usual rule of at least two benefics there it appears in about one chart in five. It also has a feature that is easy to miss, since in nine Adhi charts in ten the Moon is close to full. What the yoga gives depends on how many benefics form it, how cleanly they are placed, and whether other factors in the same houses pull against it, and those questions are worked through below before two charts from practice.

Adhi belongs with the other benefic yogas in this series, Amala yoga, a benefic in the tenth, and Saraswati yoga, the three benefics in strong houses. Because a benefic in the seventh from the Moon faces the Moon directly, it overlaps with Gaja Kesari yoga whenever that benefic is Jupiter. The Moon’s own nature, the mind and its confidence, is covered on the Moon page.

Conventions used. The reading follows Parashari principles: whole-sign houses, Vimshottari dasha and the Lahiri ayanamsa as used in Jagannatha Hora. The benefics counted are Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, and the houses are counted by sign from the Moon. Shares of charts for each version of the rule come from 60,000 random birth moments between 1950 and 2010, computed with the Swiss Ephemeris; the usual two-benefic version matches the calculator’s own frequency.

What Adhi yoga is

Count six, seven and eight signs from the Moon. Those three signs, the sixth, seventh and eighth from the Moon, form a band on the far side of the zodiac from it. When natural benefics occupy that band, the chart has Adhi yoga, and because it is counted from the Moon it is often called Chandra Adhi yoga to distinguish it from the variant counted from the lagna. The classical wording asks for benefics in the sixth, seventh and eighth, and different authorities read that as requiring one, two or all three benefics there, which is the main reason programs disagree.

The version most software uses, and the one the calculator’s figures match, requires at least two of the three benefics to fall anywhere within those three signs. People often look it up simply as benefics in 6th 7th 8th from Moon, which is the rule in a phrase. Checking for Adhi yoga in kundli software therefore means counting the benefics in that band, noting which signs they occupy, and seeing what else sits there with them.

A full-Moon yoga

The band six to eight signs from the Moon is the part of the sky opposite the Moon. Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun, and both are present in more than three Adhi charts in four, so for them to stand opposite the Moon the Sun usually stands opposite it as well. In 92 percent of Adhi charts the Moon is within sixty degrees of full, and in 80 percent the Sun itself sits in the same band as the benefics.

This matters for the reading. A Moon near full has high paksha bala, the strength the Moon draws from its distance from the Sun, so Adhi yoga almost always comes with a bright, strong Moon. Part of what the texts attribute to the yoga, confidence, good health, success over rivals, belongs as much to that bright Moon as to the benefics facing it.

Adhi yoga rules, and how often each is met

How many charts carry Adhi yoga depends almost entirely on how strictly the rule is read. The table gives the share of charts for each version in use.

Version of the ruleShare of chartsHow it is usually treated
At least one benefic in the 6th, 7th or 8th from the Moon49 percentToo common to count as Adhi in most readings; at most the weakest form

So is Adhi yoga rare? Under the usual rule it is not; one chart in five has it. In its full forms, all three benefics facing the Moon or a band free of malefics, it is rare, about one chart in twenty, and those are the charts in which the classical promise is worth taking seriously.

Commander, minister or king: what the texts promise

The classical verses say the native with this yoga becomes a commander, a minister or a king according to the strength of the benefics forming the yoga, and add that the person is polite and trustworthy, happy and comfortable, long-lived, and successful against opponents. Many later writers map the three grades onto the number of benefics, one for the commander, two for the minister and three for the king, though the older texts speak of the benefics’ strength rather than their count.

Read in modern terms, Adhi yoga effects describe authority exercised with support and goodwill: a person who rises to responsibility because others trust them, who leads without much friction, and who tends to prevail in disputes. The grade corresponds to scale, a team, an organisation or a wider public, and depends on the dignity of the benefics as well as their number.

Why the sixth, seventh and eighth from the Moon

The three houses have a logic of their own. The seventh from the Moon faces it directly, so a benefic there aspects the Moon with its full glance and supports the mind openly. The sixth and eighth from the Moon are difficult houses counted from it, the houses of rivals and of upheaval, and a benefic in either one protects the mind where it is most exposed, softening conflict and sudden change. A band of benefics across all three describes a mind supported from the front and shielded on both flanks. A benefic in the seventh from the Moon also sits in a kendra from it, which is one of the conditions the site’s Kemadruma guide lists among that yoga’s cancellations.

That is also why the yoga is linked with success over opponents and with long life in the texts. The sixth is the house of enemies and the eighth the house of longevity, and benefics there are read as protection in exactly those matters, always as tendencies rather than guarantees.

Which benefics form it

Under the usual rule, Mercury and Venus together form 54 percent of these yogas, all three benefics 23 percent, Jupiter with Mercury 12 percent and Jupiter with Venus 11 percent. The Mercury-Venus form is the common one and tends to show as diplomacy, communication and social ease in positions of responsibility. Forms that include Jupiter carry more authority and counsel, and Jupiter takes part in about 45 percent of Adhi charts, divided evenly between the sixth, seventh and eighth from the Moon.

When Jupiter is in the seventh from the Moon, the chart has Gaja Kesari as well, and the two labels describe the same support from different angles. Mercury needs the usual check: it counts as a benefic only when it is not joined by malefics, and a Mercury beside Mars or Saturn in the band weakens the yoga it helps to form.

When Jupiter also forms Shakata

There is a real tension in the tradition here. Jupiter in the sixth or eighth from the Moon is one of the conditions for Shakata yoga, a yoga of fluctuating fortune named after a cart wheel that rises and falls. About 30 percent of Adhi charts have Jupiter in one of those two positions, so they carry both labels at once.

Practitioners generally resolve this by weight. Where Jupiter is strong, the Moon is bright and other benefics share the band, the Adhi reading usually dominates and the Shakata tendency shows only as periods of uneven fortune from which the person recovers. Where Jupiter is weak and alone with Venus or Mercury, the ups and downs are more pronounced. Shakata is also cancelled by several classical conditions, Jupiter in a kendra from the lagna among them, and those should be checked before the tension is read into the chart.

Malefics in the same houses

Because Mercury and Venus usually travel with the Sun, the Sun sits in the band of benefics in about four such charts in five. Most practitioners do not treat the Sun’s presence as spoiling the yoga; it is simply the price of a Moon near full, and the Sun’s own dignity and lordship are read on their own terms. Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are a different matter. When one of them shares the band, the support the benefics give comes with friction, rivalry or disruption in the matters of that house.

The cleanest form of the yoga, two or more benefics facing the Moon with none of those four among them, occurs in about 23 percent of Adhi charts, roughly one chart in twenty overall. That is the form in which the classical promise of easy authority and success over opponents most often holds. In the other charts the yoga still works, but its authority tends to be exercised through negotiation and effort rather than simply granted.

Lagna Adhi yoga: the same rule from the ascendant

Some texts and programs apply the same rule from the lagna: benefics in the sixth, seventh and eighth houses counted from the ascendant. This lagna Adhi yoga forms in about 21 percent of charts under the two-benefic rule, almost exactly as often as the Moon version, and the two are independent, so a chart may have either, both or neither. The lagna version speaks more directly to the person’s own circumstances, their rivals, partnerships and resilience, while the Moon version, Chandra Adhi yoga, speaks to the mind’s confidence and the goodwill others extend.

Where a chart has both, the benefics protect the person and the mind at once, and practitioners give that combination considerable weight. Where it has only the lagna version, the reading leans toward partnerships and the handling of competition; the seventh house from the lagna, the house of partners, then carries a benefic in many cases.

When Adhi yoga gives results

The yoga comes to life in the Mahadasha and sub-periods of the benefics that form it, and the benefic in the seventh from the Moon, which aspects the Moon directly, is often the most active of them. The Moon’s own ten-year period, covered in Moon Mahadasha, brings the yoga’s confidence into daily life. Periods of the planets ruling the tenth and the lagna are when the authority the yoga describes usually becomes formal, an appointment, a promotion or a position of trust.

Where the chart also carries Shakata, the fluctuation it describes tends to show in the periods of Jupiter or the Moon, and the Adhi support in the periods of the other benefics. Jupiter’s transit over the natal Moon or through the band commonly marks the year in which a responsibility is offered.

Two charts with Adhi yoga

A Cancer ascendant man, particulars altered. The Moon, his lagna lord, in Aries in the tenth, in Ashwini, a public Moon of the kind Moon in the 10th house describes; Mercury in Virgo, the sixth from the Moon; the Sun and Jupiter together in Libra, the seventh from the Moon; Venus in Scorpio, the eighth from the Moon. Each of the three houses holds a benefic, the rarest and most literal form of the yoga, with Gaja Kesari as well, and a Moon at full strength opposite the Sun. Ketu’s short remainder and Venus’s twenty years came first, then the Sun’s six from twenty-one and the Moon’s ten from twenty-seven. He joined a district cooperative bank as a clerk at twenty-two, was a branch manager at thirty-two in the Moon’s own period, and at thirty-nine, in Mars-Jupiter, Mars being his yogakaraka and Jupiter his ninth lord, he became the bank’s managing director, the minister of the texts in a modern form.

A Virgo ascendant woman, particulars altered. The Moon in Sagittarius in the fourth, in Purva Ashadha; Jupiter in Taurus, the sixth from the Moon, and Venus in Gemini, the seventh from it and in her tenth house, as Venus in the 10th house describes, with Mercury outside the band in Aries: a two-benefic Adhi yoga, and because Jupiter is sixth from the Moon, Shakata yoga as well. Venus had ten years left at her birth, then came the Sun, the Moon and Mars, and Rahu’s eighteen began at thirty-three. At twenty-seven, in Mars-Rahu, she started a travel company with a partner. At thirty, in Mars-Ketu, it collapsed, the Shakata wheel at its lowest. From thirty-six, in Rahu-Jupiter, with Jupiter both the Adhi planet and her seventh lord of clients and partners, she rebuilt it on her own, and it has grown steadily since.

The first chart shows the full yoga, benefics in all three houses and a bright Moon, delivering a steady rise to authority. The second shows the usual form carrying Shakata with it: a fall, and then a recovery in the period of the very planet that formed both yogas.

Frequently asked questions

What is Adhi yoga?

Adhi yoga forms when natural benefics, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury, occupy the sixth, seventh and eighth houses from the Moon. Most software requires at least two of the three benefics in that band. It is associated with authority exercised with goodwill, comfort, long life and success against opponents.

How many benefics are needed for Adhi yoga?

Two in the version most programs use, including the calculator. Some authorities count a single benefic as a weak form, and the strongest form has all three benefics in the band. The classical grading of commander, minister and king follows the benefics’ strength.

Is Adhi yoga rare?

Under the two-benefic rule it appears in about 21 percent of charts. Its full forms are rare: all three benefics in the band in about 5 percent, and a band of benefics free of Mars, Saturn and the nodes in about 5 percent.

Why is the Moon usually near full in Adhi yoga?

Because Mercury and Venus, which form most Adhi yogas, stay close to the Sun. For them to stand in the band opposite the Moon, the Sun is usually opposite the Moon too, and in 92 percent of Adhi charts the Moon is within sixty degrees of full, a bright and strong Moon.

What if Jupiter also forms Shakata yoga?

Jupiter in the sixth or eighth from the Moon forms Shakata as well, which happens in about 30 percent of Adhi charts. The two are read by weight: with a strong Jupiter and other benefics in the band, Adhi usually dominates, and Shakata shows only as periods of uneven fortune followed by recovery.

What is Lagna Adhi yoga?

Lagna Adhi yoga applies the same rule from the ascendant, with benefics in the sixth, seventh and eighth from the lagna. It forms about as often as the Moon version, independently of it, and speaks more to partnerships, rivals and resilience than to the mind’s confidence.

When does Adhi yoga give results?

In the Mahadasha and sub-periods of the benefics forming it, especially the one in the seventh from the Moon, and in the Moon’s own period. Formal authority usually arrives in the periods of the tenth lord or lagna lord while the yoga’s planets are active.
