Padma Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 5th House, Ketu in the 11th

Padma Kaal Sarp dosha is the type in which Rahu stands in the fifth house, Ketu in the eleventh, and all seven planets fall within one half of the chart between them. The fifth house covers children, creativity, romance, intelligence, study, and speculation; the eleventh covers gains, income, friendships, networks, elder siblings and the fulfilment of wishes. The axis therefore runs between what a person creates and what returns to them from the world. Padma, the lotus, is one of the eight great serpents of tradition. Of all the types, this is the one people ask about most anxiously, because the padma kaal sarp yoga is widely said to deny or delay children. This article takes that question first and answers it the way KP does, then looks at Rahu in the 5th house and Ketu in the 11th house, the popular claims against what actually decides them, where the lagna falls and when the axis comes alive, closing with two consultation charts.

Background on Kaal Sarp dosha as a whole, and why its classical basis is doubted, is in the site’s Kaal Sarp guide; the overview of the twelve types gives each a short entry. Reverse the nodes, with Rahu in the eleventh and Ketu in the fifth, and the type becomes Vishdhar Kaal Sarp dosha.

Conventions used. A chart is counted as Kaal Sarp here only when the seven planets all sit between Rahu and Ketu measured by degree, the strict rule the site’s main guide uses, and the type follows Rahu’s whole-sign house. Nodes are mean and the ayanamsa Lahiri, as in Jagannatha Hora. The Padma charts studied were drawn from 260,000 randomly timed Delhi births spanning 1950 to 2010, calculated with the Swiss Ephemeris.

What Padma Kaal Sarp dosha is

Rahu in the fifth means Ketu in the eleventh. When the Sun, the Moon and the five planets from Mars to Saturn all lie in one of the two halves the nodes create, the popular scheme calls the chart Padma, the fifth of the twelve types, often written Padma kalsarp dosh. The type names are modern, and the formation as marketed is not described in Parashara’s text.

What the formation does, when it does anything, is make the nodal axis a recurring theme. Rahu brings appetite, originality and restlessness to the fifth house, while the eleventh, under Ketu, is held with a feeling of sufficiency. A Padma chart therefore tends to put creative drive, love, children and intellectual ambition in the foreground, and to hold gains and social networks more lightly.

The children question

The padma kaal sarp dosha children fear deserves a direct answer: Rahu in the fifth does not by itself deny children, and neither does the formation. In KP, the promise of children is read from the sub-lord of the fifth cusp, as the 2-5-11 connection for children explains. Signification of the 2nd, 5th and 11th houses promises children; the 4th without that support, or heavy signification of the 6th, 8th and 12th, points to difficulty. The timing then comes from the dasha, as with any chart. Many Padma charts show a clear promise, and in those children come in their periods.

Where a chart does show delay, the sensible response is medical as well as astrological. Fertility is a medical question first, and the site’s pages on delay in childbirth and timing IVF and assisted conception treat astrology as a guide to timing alongside treatment, never a substitute for it.

Rahu in the 5th: creativity, romance and appetite for risk

Rahu in the 5th house tends to give an original, restless intelligence and a strong creative drive, often toward film, design, technology, writing or anything new. Romance can be intense and unconventional, and the person is often drawn to what is foreign or forbidden. The fifth is also the house of speculation, and Rahu here frequently brings an appetite for trading, gambling or high-risk ventures, which can pay or cost depending on the rest of the chart. Rahu in the 5th house covers the placement generally.

In a Padma chart Rahu occupies the fifth lord’s sign and works as its agent. The fifth lord’s strength and condition, along with where that lord sits, usually says more about children, study and romance than Rahu’s presence does.

Ketu in the 11th: gains without clinging

Ketu in the 11th house tends to separate gain from attachment. Income can arrive in bursts, through unusual channels, or through work the person values for its own sake rather than for the money; friendships tend to be few and deep rather than wide; ambitions are often achieved and then outgrown. Relations with elder siblings may be distant. Ketu in the 11th house describes the placement.

Ketu here is read through the eleventh lord, whose sign it occupies. A strong eleventh lord keeps income steady even when the person’s attitude to it is detached; a weak one makes the eleventh house the part of life that needs deliberate attention.

Popular claims and what actually decides them

Most of what is said about this type comes as a list of warnings. The table sets each common claim against what the chart actually uses to decide the matter, with the house groups the site’s KP guides apply.

Popular claimWhat actually decides itHouses to look for
“Padma type means no children”The 5th cusp sub-lord, then the dasha2, 5 and 11 promise children; the 4th without support, or heavy 6, 8 and 12, show difficulty
“Speculation will ruin you”The 5th cusp sub-lord together with the 11thLinks to 11 and 2 favour gains; strong 8 and 12 point to losses
“Love affairs will fail”The 5th cusp for romance, the 7th cusp for marriage5 and 11 for love; 2, 7 and 11 for marriage, with 6, 10 and 12 obstructing
“Income will never grow”The 2nd and 11th cusp sub-lords2, 6, 10 and 11 support gains; 8 and 12 drain them
“Studies will be interrupted”Cusps 4, 9 and 11 read togetherSchool through the 4th, degrees through the 9th, results through the 11th

In every row the decisive factor is a cusp and a dasha, not the formation. The Kaal Sarp label adds emphasis to the fifth and eleventh houses; it does not replace the reading of them.

How many charts carry it

Under the strict rule a full Padma formation is uncommon, found in roughly 0.6 percent of births, since strict Kaal Sarp charts of every type make up about 7 percent and each type about a twelfth of those. Calculators that also mark partial formations flag Kaal Sarp of some type in around a fifth of charts and would show Padma in something under 2 percent. Such births bunch together in certain years, because the formation is only possible while Jupiter and Saturn both sit on the same side of the nodal axis.

The lagna and the two forms

With Rahu in the fifth, the lagna sits four signs before it and so always on the same side of the axis. The ascending form, planets running from Rahu through houses 6 to 10, always leaves the lagna unhemmed; the descending form, planets in houses 12 to 4, always encloses it. The sample split 46 to 54 percent between the two. Astrologers who treat an unhemmed lagna as breaking the formation would count nearly half of Padma charts as cancelled for that reason; others judge only the planets.

Speculation and trading

Rahu in the fifth is often found in the charts of traders and people drawn to markets, and the Padma label frequently arrives with a warning to avoid them. Speculation is a matter of risk and discipline for anyone, and astrology can only describe tendencies and timing, never guarantee an outcome. In KP the question is read from the fifth cusp sub-lord together with the eleventh: links to the 11th and 2nd favour gains, whereas a chain dominated by the 8th and 12th warns of losses, as speculation in KP astrology and the 5th cusp guide to intraday trading explain. The dasha then shows when the appetite is best indulged and when it is best restrained.

Periods that bring the axis forward

Rahu’s Mahadasha usually brings the fifth house forward: creative projects, romance, decisions about children, study, and the temptation of risk. Ketu’s Mahadasha tends to bring the eleventh-house themes of letting go, changing friendships and a changed relationship with income. Sub-periods of the nodes inside other Mahadashas work the same way on a smaller scale, and the fifth and eleventh lords bring the same houses forward in their own periods. When the nodes’ own transit brings Rahu back to the fifth house and Ketu to the eleventh, roughly once in eighteen and a half years, those themes often return for another round.

Partial Padma charts and remedies

In the sample, 55 percent of Padma charts had at least one planet sharing the fifth or eleventh sign with a node, a partial formation by the site’s definition, discussed in partial Kaal Sarp dosha. Taken with the ascending charts whose lagna is outside the hemming, the clean, full formation is a minority of the charts given the name.

People searching for padma kaal sarp dosha remedies will find pujas, mantras and gemstones on offer. Anyone who chooses a ritual from faith should feel free to; the chart does not require one, and the site’s remedies review separates practices with some reasoning behind them from those sold on fear. For a couple hoping for a child, the most important step is good medical care, with astrology used, if at all, for timing.

Two charts with the Padma axis

A man born with Capricorn rising, with details changed. His Rahu sits in Taurus in the fifth house and his Ketu in Scorpio in the eleventh, and every planet falls in houses 6 to 10, the ascending form, which leaves his lagna unhemmed; Rahu there acts for Venus, his yogakaraka. The Moon in Hasta gave him five years of its own period, then Mars’s seven, and Rahu’s Mahadasha from twelve to thirty. He made short films through college, and at twenty-four, in Rahu-Venus, his first independent feature won a festival prize. The eleventh-house Ketu showed in what he did with the money: at thirty-three, in Jupiter-Saturn, with Saturn his lagna lord, he put most of what his films had earned into a free film school.

A woman born with Cancer rising, with details changed. Rahu sits in Scorpio in her fifth house and Ketu in Taurus in her eleventh, with all seven planets in houses 12 to 4, the descending form. She had been told that Padma meant no children. Her 5th cusp sub-lord signifies the 2nd, 5th and 11th houses, the promise, together with the 4th, which explained the delay. Her Moon at the start of Chitra meant almost the whole of Mars’s period, then Rahu’s eighteen and Jupiter’s sixteen from twenty-five. She and her husband went through several years of fertility treatment, and their son was born when she was thirty-six, in Jupiter-Sun, with the Sun her second lord.

Frequently asked questions

What is Padma Kaal Sarp dosha?

The fifth Kaal Sarp type: Rahu occupies the 5th house, Ketu the 11th, and every planet lies on the same side of them. Its themes are children, creativity, romance and intelligence against gains, friendships and wishes.

Does Padma Kaal Sarp dosha deny children?

No. The promise of children is read from the 5th cusp sub-lord: the 2nd, 5th and 11th houses promise them, and the 4th without support or heavy 6th, 8th and 12th signification shows difficulty. Fertility itself is a medical matter, and treatment should never wait on a chart.

Is Padma Kaal Sarp dosha bad for trading or speculation?

Rahu in the 5th often brings an appetite for risk, not a verdict on it. The 5th cusp sub-lord’s links to the 11th and 2nd favour gains and to the 8th and 12th point to losses, and no chart guarantees a market outcome.

How common is Padma Kaal Sarp dosha?

About 0.6 percent of births have a full Padma formation under the strict degree rule, and a little under 2 percent of charts show it when partial formations are counted.

Does Ketu in the 11th stop income?

No. It tends to make a person detached about gains, with income arriving in bursts or through unusual channels. How much comes in is a question for the sub-lords of the 2nd and 11th cusps.

What are the remedies for Padma Kaal Sarp dosha?

None is required. A ritual performed out of faith is a personal choice. For couples hoping for children, medical care comes first, with astrology at most a guide to timing.

When does the Padma axis become active?

Mostly in Rahu’s and Ketu’s periods, Rahu’s for fifth-house matters and Ketu’s for the eleventh, and in the periods of the 5th and 11th lords, with the nodes’ return to the same houses every eighteen and a half years or so.
