Vasuki Kaal Sarp Dosha: Rahu in the 3rd House, Ketu in the 9th

Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha is the type in which Rahu occupies the third house, Ketu the ninth, and the seven planets all sit on one side of that line. In the story of the churning of the ocean, Vasuki is the serpent king who served as the rope, pulled back and forth until the ocean gave up both poison and nectar, and it is a fitting name for an axis that runs between effort and fortune. The third house is courage, initiative, skills, communication, siblings and short journeys; the ninth is luck, faith, higher learning, teachers, the father and long journeys. Because Rahu is traditionally at its best in the third, many astrologers regard the vasuki kaal sarp yoga as one of the milder types. This article explains why, and covers what Ketu in the ninth does, where the lagna falls, the KP check, the periods that bring the axis alive, and two charts from practice.

The site’s main guide to Kaal Sarp dosha discusses the formation as a whole and the doubts about its classical basis, and the Vasuki entry in the overview of the twelve types gives the short version of what follows. The mirror image of this axis, Rahu in the ninth and Ketu in the third, is Shankhachud Kaal Sarp dosha.

Conventions used. The site’s strict Kaal Sarp test applies: every planet from the Sun to Saturn between the nodes by degree, with the type taken from Rahu’s whole-sign house. Mean nodes and the Lahiri ayanamsa, as in Jagannatha Hora. To study the type, 250,000 randomly timed births from 1950 to 2010 were cast for Delhi with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Vasuki charts among them analysed.

What Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha is

Place Rahu in the third house and Ketu is always in the ninth. If every planet then falls in the half of the chart running one way from Rahu to Ketu, the chart is given the Vasuki label, the third of the twelve Kaal Sarp types, sometimes written Vasuki kalsarp dosh. Like all the type names, it is a modern classification rather than a classical one.

The formation’s effect, where it has one, is emphasis. Rahu enlarges and restlessly pursues the matters of its house, Ketu withdraws attachment from the matters of its house, and a chart with everything to one side tends to make that pull a recurring theme. In a Vasuki chart the pull is between what a person achieves by their own effort and what comes to them through fortune, faith and the people who guide them.

How rare the full formation is

A full Vasuki formation by the strict degree test is uncommon, about one birth in 170, since strict Kaal Sarp charts of any type are about 7 percent of births and Vasuki takes a twelfth of them. Calculators that count partial formations flag Kaal Sarp in roughly a fifth of all charts and would show Vasuki in something under 2 percent. As with every type, the births cluster in certain years and come and go within them as the Moon crosses the nodal line.

Rahu in the 3rd: one of its strongest houses

The third is an upachaya, one of the four houses that improve with effort and time, and Rahu is widely regarded as performing well in all of them. In the third it tends to give courage, initiative, a flair for media, marketing, writing, sales and technology, and a willingness to take risks others avoid. The shadow side is recklessness or a tendency to overstate, and relations with younger siblings can be competitive. Rahu in the 3rd house covers the placement in detail.

That strength is why the site’s article on cancelling Kaal Sarp dosha notes that some astrologers consider the dosha’s effects naturally reduced when Rahu occupies the third, sixth or eleventh house. Vasuki is therefore one of the three types most often described as manageable, alongside Mahapadma, with Rahu in the sixth, and Vishdhar, with Rahu in the eleventh.

Ketu in the 9th: faith on one’s own terms

Ketu in the 9th house tends to loosen the person’s ties to inherited belief, orthodox religion and received authority, while leaving a strong inner sense of right and wrong. People with it often question the faith they were raised in, find teachers outside the usual channels, or arrive at a philosophy of their own; pilgrimage, retreat and serious study frequently appear. Luck, the ninth house’s other meaning, tends to arrive less through inheritance or patronage and more as the result of effort. Ketu in the 9th house describes the placement in general.

Ketu here can also describe some distance from the father or from mentors, in the sense of independence rather than loss: the person learns from them and then goes their own way. That is one of the placement’s quieter gifts, and many people with it become teachers of an unorthodox kind themselves.

Effort against fortune

The Vasuki axis sets the third house, what you make happen, against the ninth, what life hands you. With Rahu on the effort side and Ketu on the fortune side, the typical pattern is a self-made life: results come from initiative, skill and persistence rather than from inheritance, connections or good timing handed down. It can feel as though luck is always somewhere else, and the vasuki kaal sarp dosha effects people describe usually come down to that feeling. The same pattern, looked at from the other side, produces people who are unusually resourceful and who value what they have because they built it.

The axis also runs between short journeys and long ones, and between the practical mind of the third house and the philosophical mind of the ninth. Many people with it are good communicators who become interested in ideas larger than their trade, and who travel widely for work, a theme that connects with the ninth house’s role in foreign travel and settlement.

Which side the lagna falls on

With Rahu in the third house, the lagna sits two signs behind it, always on the same side of the axis. In the ascending form, where the planets run from Rahu through houses 4 to 8 toward Ketu, the lagna lies outside the planets’ half; in the descending form, with the planets in houses 10 to 2, it lies inside. In the sample 44 percent of Vasuki charts were ascending and 56 percent descending. Those astrologers who count an unhemmed lagna as breaking the formation would therefore regard more than four Vasuki charts in ten as cancelled on that ground alone, before Rahu’s strength in the third is even considered.

The KP check: the 3rd and 9th cusps

In KP the formation is never read on its own. The sub-lord of the third cusp governs siblings, communication, courage and short travel; the sub-lord of the ninth cusp governs fortune, the father, higher learning and long journeys, and the 3rd, 9th and 12th houses together govern travel and residence abroad. Rahu is read through its sign lord, which in a Vasuki chart is the third lord, then its star lord and the planets joined to it; Ketu through the ninth lord and its own star lord. Only if those chains tie the axis to difficult houses for the matter in question does the label add anything, and the running dasha decides whether any of it comes due.

Siblings, father and teachers

Because the third house covers siblings and the ninth the father and teachers, Vasuki is often said to disturb family relationships. What the axis more usually describes is a particular style of relationship: competitive or independent with brothers and sisters, respectful but separate with the father, and selective with mentors. Whether those relationships are warm or strained is decided by the house lords and the KP sub-lords, not by the formation. Nothing in a Vasuki chart predicts illness or loss for a sibling or parent, and such predictions have no place in a responsible reading.

The periods that activate the axis

Several traditions hold that Kaal Sarp effects are dormant outside the periods of the nodes, a view the cancellation article records as a time limit rather than a cancellation. Whether or not one accepts that, the Vasuki axis is certainly most visible in particular periods, set out in the table.

PeriodWhat tends to come forwardWhat to check
Rahu Mahadasha, 18 yearsInitiative, self-promotion, media work, risk-taking, moves for workRahu’s sign lord, the 3rd lord, and its star lord
Ketu Mahadasha, 7 yearsQuestioning of beliefs, distance from mentors, study, pilgrimageKetu’s sign lord, the 9th lord, and its star lord
Rahu sub-periodsShort bursts of effort, courses, campaigns, travelWhether the Mahadasha lord supports the 3rd house
Ketu sub-periodsShort spells of stepping back from authority or routine faithWhether the Mahadasha lord supports the 9th house
Periods of the 3rd and 9th lordsThe axis activated through its own lordsTheir dignity and KP significations
Nodal return years, about 18 to 19, 37 and 56Transiting nodes back across the 3rd and 9th housesThe dasha in force at the time

The general accounts of Rahu Mahadasha and Ketu Mahadasha describe those periods for any chart; in a Vasuki chart they are simply more pointed.

Partial formations and remedies

In 53 percent of Vasuki charts in the sample, at least one planet shared the third or ninth sign with a node, a partial formation in the site’s terms, explained in partial Kaal Sarp dosha. Add the ascending charts with the lagna outside, and Rahu’s strength in the third, and a clean, full, unsoftened Vasuki formation turns out to be a small subset of the charts given the name.

The usual list of vasuki kaal sarp dosha remedies runs from temple pujas to gemstones. Anyone who performs a ritual out of devotion should feel free to; the chart itself does not demand one, and the remedies review separates practices with a reasoned basis from those sold on fear. For this axis the most useful practical step is to channel Rahu’s third-house energy into sustained work rather than scattered starts.

Two charts with the Vasuki axis

First, a woman with Aries rising, particulars changed. Her Rahu occupies Gemini, the third house, and her Ketu Sagittarius, the ninth, with all seven planets in houses 4 to 8: an ascending Vasuki formation with the lagna outside the hemming. She comes from a family of temple priests. Born with the Moon in Hasta, she had eight years of its period to run and Mars’s seven after that, which brought her into Rahu’s Mahadasha at fifteen. At twenty-three, in Rahu-Mercury, with Mercury her third lord, she started a science video channel, and by twenty-eight, in Rahu-Venus, it had a million subscribers. Her family, uneasy at first about a daughter who questioned tradition in public, came round to it over the years. Rahu in the third gave her the platform; Ketu in the ninth, the independence of mind.

A man with Cancer rising, details altered. Rahu is in Virgo in the third and Ketu in Pisces in the ninth, with all seven planets in houses 10 to 2: a descending Vasuki formation with the lagna inside. His Moon in Punarvasu left four and a half years of Jupiter’s period, then Saturn’s nineteen, Mercury’s seventeen from twenty-three and Ketu’s seven from forty. Through Mercury’s Mahadasha, Mercury being Rahu’s sign lord and his third lord, he was his company’s top salesman and travelled constantly. At forty-one, as Ketu’s Mahadasha began, he took a year’s sabbatical to study philosophy, and at forty-five, in Ketu-Jupiter, with Jupiter his ninth lord, he left sales to lead small-group pilgrimages in the Himalayas.

Frequently asked questions

What is Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha?

The Kaal Sarp type with Rahu in the 3rd house and Ketu in the 9th, all seven planets lying to one side of them. Its theme is effort and initiative set against fortune, faith and mentors.

Is Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha considered mild?

Often, yes. Rahu is regarded as strong in the 3rd, one of the upachaya houses, and some astrologers consider Kaal Sarp effects reduced whenever Rahu occupies the 3rd, 6th or 11th house.

How rare is Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha?

Under the strict degree test about one birth in 170 has a full Vasuki formation. Calculators that include partial formations show it in just under 2 percent of charts.

Does Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha affect the father or siblings?

It usually describes independence rather than harm: competitive or separate siblings, a respectful distance from the father, selective mentors. The warmth of those relationships is judged from the house lords and sub-lords, and no reading should predict illness or loss for a relative.

Does it block luck?

It tends to describe luck earned rather than handed down. Results come through initiative and skill, which is why many people with this axis are resourceful and self-made.

What are the remedies for Vasuki Kaal Sarp dosha?

None is required. A puja performed in devotion is a personal choice. The practical remedy for this axis is to turn Rahu’s energy in the 3rd into sustained work.

When is the Vasuki axis most active?

In the periods of Rahu and Ketu, especially their Mahadashas, in the periods of the 3rd and 9th lords, and around the years when the transiting nodes return to their natal positions.
