Relationship Transits: Jupiter Over the 5th and 7th, Saturn’s Test, and the Nodes’ Eighteen Months

Transits do not make relationships. The period does, and the transit gives the season inside it, which is the rule every timing page in this cluster has kept and this page makes exact. Jupiter, a year to a sign, gives the year within a carrier’s sub-period, and its twelve-year cycle has six years in which it stands on or aspects the fifth or the seventh and six in which it does not. Saturn, two and a half years to a sign, gives the test, over the seventh, the fifth, the first and the tenth, and the seven and a half years of Sade Sati as the review. The nodes, eighteen months to a sign and always opposite each other, give Rahu’s appetite and Ketu’s fade in two houses at once. Venus gives the month, and Venus retrograde the reconnection window; Mars gives the six-week quarrel; the eclipses give the month of the crisis on the relationship axes; Mercury retrograde gives the weeks the message goes wrong. This article reads each of them for relationships, without a year in it, with Jupiter’s twelve houses in a table, the rule that a transit without a carrier’s sub-period is a year of offers the native cannot take, and the four-step method for building a five-year relationship calendar from the ephemeris that names each year’s season for a given chart.

It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. The periods the transits time are the previous page, Which Dasha Gives Love?; the general method of reading transits over the natal chart is the gochara guide; and Saturn’s transit over the natal Moon in full is the complete Sade Sati guide.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha; transits read by sign from the lagna and from the Moon, with Jupiter’s fifth, seventh and ninth aspects and Saturn’s third, seventh and tenth counted from the transiting position; the nodes as the mean node, moving backward; combustion and retrogression from the ephemeris. A transit is a season inside a period and never an event on its own; nothing on this page is tied to a calendar year, since the cycles repeat and the reading is meant to be used for any year the reader opens the ephemeris. Nothing here is a remedy.

The rule: the period makes, the transit times

The order of reading is fixed and the whole page depends on it: first the dasha, which says whether a relationship can begin, change or end in a given stretch of years, and then the transit, which says in which year and month inside that stretch. A transit read alone produces the commonest error in this subject, Jupiter over the seventh promised as a marriage to a native in a sixth lord’s sub-period, and the marriage does not come, because Jupiter cannot deliver what the period has not permitted. The transit’s real power is inside a permitting period, where it is decisive: a carrier’s sub-period is two or three years wide and Jupiter’s year inside it is the year, Venus’s month inside that is the month, and a reading that has both layers names a window a few months wide and is usually right. The transit also has a second power, which is the test: Saturn’s and the nodes’ transits do not need a permitting period to be felt, since they test whatever exists, and a relationship under Saturn’s transit over the seventh is under weight whatever the dasha says. So the transits divide into the ones that deliver inside a period, Jupiter and Venus, and the ones that test regardless, Saturn and the nodes, with Mars, the eclipses and Mercury retrograde as the short seasons of quarrel, crisis and confusion that every relationship passes through several times a year.

Jupiter’s twelve-year cycle for relationships

Jupiter spends about a year in each sign and returns to the same sign every twelve, so every native has a twelve-year relationship cycle in Jupiter’s transit, with six years in which Jupiter touches the fifth or the seventh and six in which it does not. Jupiter touches a house by standing in it or by its aspects on the fifth, seventh and ninth from its position, so that Jupiter in the first aspects the fifth, seventh and ninth, all three relationship houses at once, which is why the year of Jupiter’s return to the lagna sign is a relationship year in most charts; Jupiter in the third aspects the seventh; in the fifth stands on it; in the seventh stands on it; in the ninth aspects the fifth; in the eleventh aspects the fifth and the seventh. Those six years, the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth and eleventh, are the years in which a carrier’s sub-period delivers, and the other six are the years in which even a carrier’s sub-period waits. Jupiter’s own pages give each house in its full range, in Jupiter through the first, the third, the fifth, the seventh, the ninth and the eleventh; the table below reads all twelve for relationships alone.

Jupiter house by house: the twelve years read for love

Jupiter transitingTouches the 5th or 7th?The year, for relationships
The 1stAspects the 5th, 7th and 9thThe relationship year of the cycle; the native is offered, the bond is sanctioned; a carrier’s sub-period delivers here first
The 2ndNoThe family’s year; a relationship is brought home, or the family’s view of it is settled
The 3rdAspects the 7thThe year of the message and the courage; the partnership approached in words; a proposal made
The 4thNoThe home’s year; a couple settles, a house is made; not a beginning
The 5thStands on the 5thThe romance year; the feeling arrives; children in a marriage
The 6thNoThe quarrel’s year, or the workplace romance; disputes sanctioned and settled
The 7thStands on the 7thThe bond year; the classical year of marriage inside a carrier’s sub-period
The 8thNoThe intimacy and crisis year; the relationship deepens or is transformed; not a beginning
The 9thAspects the 5thThe year of the far romance and the sanctioned love; the partner met on a journey
The 10thNoThe standing’s year; the couple seen, the relationship made public; the workplace
The 11thAspects the 5th and 7thThe fulfilment year; the friend becomes more, the wish is granted, the engagement
The 12thNoThe far and private year; the relationship abroad or out of sight; a season of loss or of retreat

Six of twelve touch the relationship houses, and the six are not consecutive; the calendar section shows how to find which of the next five years fall in them for a given chart.

The same cycle from the Moon, and the years both agree

The transits are read a second time from the Moon, with the houses counted from the Moon’s sign, and Jupiter over the fifth or seventh from the Moon is the year the heart is offered what the lagna’s year offers the life. The two readings agree in some years and not in others: a native whose Moon is in the third from the lagna has Jupiter’s transit over the seventh from the lagna falling in the fifth from the Moon, the bond’s year and the romance’s year at once, which is the year the reading is surest of; a native whose Moon is in the sixth from the lagna has the same transit falling in the second from the Moon, the bond’s year in the life and the family’s in the heart, which is the year the native marries and the family is pleased and the native is not swept away. The rule the cluster’s dasha page gave for periods holds for transits: the lagna decides the event and the Moon decides the feeling, and a year in which Jupiter touches a relationship house from both is the year the event and the feeling coincide. The calendar method below reads both and marks the years of agreement, since those are the years to plan around and the others are the years to expect the event without the feeling or the feeling without the event.

Saturn’s tests: the seventh, the fifth, the first and the tenth

Saturn spends about two and a half years in a sign and touches a house by standing in it or by its aspects on the third, seventh and tenth from its position, so Saturn tests the seventh house from the seventh itself, from the first, from the fifth and from the tenth, and tests the fifth from the fifth, the third, the eighth and the eleventh. Its transit over the seventh, in Saturn through the seventh, is the relationship’s own test, the two and a half years in which a bond is asked whether it can bear weight, the ones that cannot end, and the ones that can become permanent; a relationship that survives it is usually the one that becomes the marriage. Over the fifth, in Saturn through the fifth, it cools a romance and tests whether the feeling is a bond; over the first, in Saturn through the first, it aspects the seventh and tests the native’s own capacity for partnership while remaking the self; over the tenth, in Saturn through the tenth, it aspects the seventh from the work’s house, the season in which the work strains the bond; over the fourth, in Saturn through the fourth, it aspects the tenth and the first and sits on the home, the season in which the home is heavy. Saturn’s tests do not need a permitting period; they test whatever exists, and the reading of Saturn’s transit for a couple is always a date and a description: the two and a half years, the house, what it asks, and the sentence that endings under it hold and bonds that come through it last.

Sade Sati as the relationship’s review

Saturn’s transit over the sign before the natal Moon, the Moon’s sign and the sign after is Sade Sati, seven and a half years, and the Saturn page of this cluster has read it as the relationship’s review; here it is placed in the transit calendar. The first phase, Saturn in the twelfth from the Moon, is the withdrawal, the two and a half years in which the native’s heart pulls inward and the partner feels the distance; the second, Saturn on the Moon, is the weight, the phase in which every bond is what it actually is and the wrong ones end; the third, Saturn in the second from the Moon, is the rebuilding of the household on what survived. In the calendar, Sade Sati is marked as a seven-and-a-half-year stretch with its three phases dated, and the reading of any relationship transit inside it is coloured by the phase: Jupiter over the seventh in Sade Sati’s second phase is the bond offered under weight, which is the bond that is sober from the start and holds; a Rahu transit over the fifth in the first phase is the obsession that the withdrawal makes worse. Everyone has Sade Sati about three times in a life, roughly thirty years apart, and a native in their late twenties and a native in their late fifties are usually in one, which is one reason those two ages are the ages of the relationship audits the Saturn page describes.

The nodes’ eighteen months: appetite and fade in two houses at once

Rahu and Ketu move backward through the signs, about eighteen months to a sign, always opposite each other, so that a node’s transit is always two transits at once: Rahu over the fifth is Ketu over the eleventh, Rahu over the seventh is Ketu over the first, Rahu over the first is Ketu over the seventh, Rahu over the eleventh is Ketu over the fifth. Rahu over the fifth, in Rahu through the fifth, is the obsession, the romance with the unfamiliar, with Ketu over the eleventh detaching the native from the friends who might have advised; Rahu over the seventh, in Rahu through the seventh, is the outsider partner or the wandering eye, with Ketu over the first detaching the native from themselves; Ketu over the fifth, in Ketu through the fifth, is the fade of a romance, with Rahu over the eleventh wanting the circle; Ketu over the seventh, in Ketu through the seventh, is the fade of a bond or the companionable stretch, with Rahu over the first wanting for the self. The nodal transits do not need a permitting period to be felt, and their reading is the Rahu and Ketu pages’ with a date: what begins under Rahu’s transit is real and reverses when it leaves the sign unless a carrier holds it, what fades under Ketu’s has completed, and a couple given the dates survive both, since a wandering that is a transit passes with the transit and a fade that is a transit is the season to choose each other on purpose. The nodes return to their natal positions every eighteen and a half years, and the nodal return, around eighteen or nineteen, thirty-seven, and fifty-five or fifty-six, is the season in which the natal Rahu-Ketu axis is activated, which the karmic relationships page reads.

Venus’s month, Venus retrograde, and Mars’s six weeks

Venus crosses a sign in three to four weeks, and inside a Jupiter year inside a carrier’s sub-period, Venus over the fifth, the seventh or the first is the month the meeting or the decision most often falls in; alone it is weather, and it is used only inside the two heavier layers. Venus retrograde, about six weeks every nineteen months, is the reconnection window the cluster’s pages have referred to: the past returns to be reconsidered, the ex writes, the old feeling surfaces, and what begins under it is a return rather than a beginning; a couple should not make their large decision inside it, and a native in a carrier’s sub-period with Venus retrograde over the seventh should expect the past before the future. Mars crosses a sign in about six weeks, and its transit over the seventh, the fifth, the fourth or natal Venus is the quarrel window, the weeks in which the relationship’s heat rises and the underground fight comes up; it is a testing transit in the breakup page’s terms, and a fight under it in a sound period passes with it. Mars retrograde, about two months every two years, lengthens the window and turns the heat inward, and Mars’s transit over the eighth or twelfth is the season of the anger that cannot be spoken. Venus and Mars together, transiting in the same sign over a relationship house, is the month of chemistry, and the same over the sixth or the twelfth the month of the quarrel that is really desire.

Eclipses on the relationship axes, and Mercury retrograde

Eclipses fall in the signs the nodes occupy, so an eclipse season lands on whichever house pair the nodes are transiting, and the eclipses that matter for relationships are the ones on the first-seventh axis, the native and the partner, and the fifth-eleventh axis, the romance and its fulfilment. An eclipse on the seventh, or on the natal Moon, Venus or the seventh lord, is the month of the crisis in a relationship, the revelation, the sudden decision, the thing that was underground brought into the light; the eclipse itself decides nothing, but the month around it is the one in which whatever the period is doing is done suddenly, and the reading gives the dates and the sentence that decisions made in an eclipse month are revised in the months after. The eclipse calendar and its reading are on the site’s eclipse pages, beginning with the eclipse guide, and the eclipse’s effect on the native’s own energy in the eclipses and health page. Mercury retrograde, three or four times a year for about three weeks, is the smallest transit on this page and the most often felt: the weeks in which the message is misread, the plan is changed, the conversation goes wrong, and a hidden relationship is found through its channel, as the secret relationships page says; over the seventh, the third or the natal Mercury it is strongest, and a couple who know the dates postpone the conversation that matters. The dates for any year are in the ephemeris, and the site’s own retrograde calendar, in the Mercury retrograde dates page, gives one year’s as an example of how to read them.

The year of offers: a transit without a carrier

The sentence this page exists to state plainly is that Jupiter over the seventh in a sub-period that does not carry relationships is a year of offers the native cannot take. It happens in every chart several times in a life: the fine Jupiter year, the introductions, the proposals, the person who was right, in a sub-period of the twelfth lord or the eighth lord or Ketu, and nothing comes of it, or something comes of it and does not last past the sub-period, and the native concludes that the transit was wrong. The transit was not wrong; it was read alone. The reading that has the dasha first says, of such a year, that the offers will come and the native should notice who they are, since the same people often return in the carrier’s sub-period two years later, and that the year is for meeting and not for deciding. The reverse case is as common: a carrier’s sub-period in a year when Jupiter touches neither relationship house is a season of readiness with no date in it, and the native who is told “this is your period” and given no year waits three years for the Jupiter year that the calendar would have named. The two layers together are the whole method, and the calendar section is the method made into a table for one chart.

Building a five-year relationship calendar from the ephemeris

With the chart and an ephemeris, the calendar is built in four steps, and it names each year’s season without naming a year, so the method works whenever the reader opens it. First, list the next five years’ sub-periods from the dasha table and mark each as a carrier’s, a breaker’s or neither, using the dasha page’s rule for the ascendant. Second, from the ephemeris, list Jupiter’s sign for each of the five years and translate it into a house from the lagna and from the Moon; mark the years in which Jupiter is in the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth or eleventh from either, and mark the years in which it is so from both. Third, list Saturn’s sign for the five years and the nodes’ signs, translated into houses; mark Saturn’s years over the first, fifth, seventh or tenth as tests, mark Sade Sati if the Moon’s sign or its neighbours are in Saturn’s path, and mark the nodes’ eighteen months over the fifth-eleventh or first-seventh axes as the appetite-and-fade seasons. Fourth, read the columns together, year by year: a carrier’s sub-period with Jupiter touching a relationship house from both charts and no Saturn test is a making year, and the reading names the month by Venus; a carrier’s sub-period under Saturn’s test is a slow making year, the bond made under weight; a breaker’s sub-period with Ketu over the seventh is an ending season; and a year with Jupiter’s touch and no carrier is a year of offers. The result for a Libra lagna with the Moon in Gemini, to take one shape, is a five-year column in which the year Jupiter is in Aries, the lagna’s seventh and the Moon’s eleventh, is marked from both charts, and the year Jupiter is in Aquarius, the lagna’s fifth and the Moon’s ninth, is marked from both again, so that those two years are the ones to check against the sub-periods first. That is the calendar the consultation gives, with the three things the four steps cannot: the carrier’s dignity, the Navamsa, and the practitioner’s reading of which of two marked years is the one.

Frequently asked questions

Which transit brings a relationship?

None on its own; the dasha brings it and the transit times it. Inside a carrier’s sub-period, Jupiter’s transit over the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth or eleventh from the lagna or the Moon gives the year, since from those houses Jupiter stands on or aspects the fifth or seventh, and Venus’s transit over the fifth, seventh or first gives the month. Jupiter over the seventh in a sub-period that does not carry relationships is a year of offers the native cannot take.

What does Jupiter transit do for love and marriage?

Jupiter’s twelve-year cycle has six years that touch the relationship houses: over the first it aspects the fifth, seventh and ninth at once, the relationship year of the cycle; over the third it aspects the seventh; over the fifth and seventh it stands on them, the romance year and the bond year; over the ninth it aspects the fifth; over the eleventh it aspects both, the fulfilment year. In the other six it settles the home, deepens the intimacy or takes the relationship abroad, and even a carrier’s sub-period waits.

What does Saturn transit over the 7th house do to a relationship?

It tests it for two and a half years, asking whether the bond can bear weight; the ones that cannot end and the endings hold, and the ones that can become permanent, so that a relationship which survives Saturn over the seventh is usually the one that becomes the marriage. Saturn also tests the seventh from the first, the fifth and the tenth by aspect, and the fifth from the third, the eighth and the eleventh. Saturn’s tests do not need a permitting period; they test whatever exists.

What happens during Rahu or Ketu transit over the 5th or 7th house?

Eighteen months of appetite or fade, always in two houses at once, since the nodes are opposite: Rahu over the fifth is the obsession with Ketu over the eleventh detaching the friends; Rahu over the seventh is the outsider partner or the wandering eye with Ketu over the first; Ketu over the fifth is the fade of a romance; Ketu over the seventh the fade of a bond or the companionable stretch. What begins under Rahu’s transit reverses when it leaves the sign unless a carrier holds it, and a couple given the dates survive both.

Does Venus retrograde affect relationships?

For about six weeks every nineteen months it is the reconnection window: the past returns to be reconsidered, the ex writes, the old feeling surfaces, and what begins under it is a return rather than a beginning. Couples should not make their large decision inside it, and a native in a carrier’s sub-period with Venus retrograde over the seventh should expect the past before the future. Venus direct over the fifth, seventh or first is the month inside a Jupiter year inside a carrier’s sub-period, and alone it is weather.

How do eclipses affect relationships?

An eclipse on the first-seventh axis, the native and the partner, or the fifth-eleventh axis, the romance and its fulfilment, or on the natal Moon, Venus or the seventh lord, marks the month in which whatever the period is doing is done suddenly: the revelation, the decision, the thing underground brought into the light. The eclipse decides nothing itself, and decisions made in an eclipse month tend to be revised in the months after; the reading gives the dates as a month to act carefully in.

How do I make a relationship transit calendar for my own chart?

List the next five years’ sub-periods and mark each as carrier, breaker or neither; list Jupiter’s sign for each year from the ephemeris and translate it into a house from the lagna and the Moon, marking the years it is in the first, third, fifth, seventh, ninth or eleventh from either and from both; list Saturn’s and the nodes’ signs the same way, marking the tests, Sade Sati and the appetite-and-fade seasons; then read the columns year by year. A carrier’s sub-period with Jupiter’s touch from both charts and no Saturn test is a making year, and Venus’s transit gives its month.
