Venus and Relationships: What You Need From Love, by Lordship, Sign, House and Condition

Venus is the planet of how a native loves and how they need to be loved, and most of what goes wrong between two people who care for each other goes wrong there, in the difference between what each gives without thinking and what each needs without asking. The chart reads Venus for relationships in four layers, in the same order every planet page in this cluster uses. What Venus rules for the ascendant, which decides what the Venus period brings: a bond for Aries and Scorpio, where it rules the seventh; a romance for Gemini and Capricorn, where it rules the fifth; and something else entirely for the ascendants where it rules the sixth or the twelfth. The sign, which is the love language, the way the native gives and the way they need to receive. The house, which is where the love lives and where it is met. And the condition, exalted in Pisces or debilitated in Virgo, combust, retrograde, or in the company of Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or Mars, each of which changes what the native’s love is like from inside. This article gives the four layers with the twelve-ascendant table, the Venus period for relationships, Venus retrograde in transit, the weak Venus and what does and does not help it, and a chart in which an exalted Venus in the sixth loved through service.

It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. Venus’s whole profile, beyond relationships, is on the Venus page, its period on the Venus mahadasha page, and the physical layer it shares with Mars in Venus, Mars and sexual compatibility; the desire and conflict that Mars brings to a relationship is the next planet page, Mars and Relationships.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha; Venus as the significator of love, attraction and pleasure in every chart, read first by lordship for the ascendant, then by sign, house and condition; combustion within about eight degrees of the Sun, retrogression, and conjunctions read with the usual orbs. The classical assignment of Venus as the spouse significator in a man’s chart and Jupiter in a woman’s is noted where it matters; for the way a native loves, Venus is read the same for everyone. Nothing here is a remedy to strengthen Venus.

What you give without thinking and need without asking: Venus, read in four layers.

A relationship consultation reads what Venus rules in your chart and what its period brings, the sign that is your love language and the one your partner's Venus speaks, the house where your love lives, and the condition that shapes it from inside, so that the next relationship is read against what you actually need rather than what you have been told to want.

What Venus is in a relationship, and what it is not

Venus is attraction, in both directions: what the native is drawn to and what draws others to them. It is pleasure, the part of a relationship that is enjoyed rather than worked at. It is the way the native loves, the shape their affection takes when they are not thinking about it, and the way they need to be loved, the shape they cannot do without and rarely name. And in the classical texts it is the spouse significator in a man’s chart, the wife’s nature and the marriage’s comfort, with Jupiter taking that role in a woman’s, an assignment that still matters for reading the spouse and matters less for reading the native’s own way of loving, which Venus carries for everyone. What Venus is not is the bond itself, which is the seventh house and its lord, or the romance itself, which is the fifth: a chart can have a magnificent Venus and a silent seventh, the native who loves beautifully and is not partnered, and a plain Venus with a strong seventh, the native who is married well and has never been swept away. Venus is the quality of the loving, and the houses are whether and when, and a reading that confuses the two tells a native with exalted Venus that they will marry happily when what the chart says is that they will love well, which is a different promise and one the seventh may or may not keep.

Layer one: what Venus rules for your ascendant

Before its sign or house, Venus is read for what it rules, because the same Venus brings a bond in one chart and a quarrel in another according to which houses it owns. Venus rules two signs, Taurus and Libra, and for each ascendant those two signs fall in two houses: for Aries the second and seventh, so Venus is the bond’s own lord and its period marries; for Scorpio the seventh and twelfth, the bond and the distance in one planet; for Gemini the fifth and twelfth, the romance and its privacy; for Capricorn the fifth and tenth, the romance and the public life, the love met at work; for Taurus the first and sixth, the self and the service; for Libra the first and eighth, the self and the crisis; for Sagittarius the sixth and eleventh, the quarrel and the friend; for Pisces the third and eighth, the message and the secret. The rule that follows is the one this cluster’s planet pages all rest on: a planet’s period gives by lordship first, occupation second and nature third, so that the Venus period, which every native has for twenty years at some point, is a period of bonds for Aries and Scorpio, of romances for Gemini and Capricorn, and of the self, the work or the circle for the rest, with love arriving through those. Venus’s nature as the significator colours every one of these, but the colour is not the shape, and the table gives the shape for all twelve.

Venus’s lordship for all twelve ascendants, and what its period brings

AscendantVenus rulesWhat the Venus period brings in love
AriesThe 2nd and the 7thThe bond and the marriage; the family joined; the strongest Venus period for partnership
TaurusThe 1st and the 6thThe self first; love through work, service or a dispute; the native chooses
GeminiThe 5th and the 12thRomance, private or far; the love kept out of sight, or abroad
CancerThe 4th and the 11thLove through the home and the circle; the family’s introduction, the friend who becomes more
LeoThe 3rd and the 10thLove through communication and the workplace; the colleague, the correspondent
VirgoThe 2nd and the 9thLove through the family and the far; the partner from another tradition, sanctioned
LibraThe 1st and the 8thThe self and the transformation; love that changes the native; intensity
ScorpioThe 7th and the 12thThe bond at a distance or in private; the partner abroad; the marriage that moves
SagittariusThe 6th and the 11thLove through the workplace and the friends; a bond with disputes in it, and gains
CapricornThe 5th and the 10thRomance and the public life; the love met at work, seen by everyone
AquariusThe 4th and the 9thLove through the home and the tradition; the arranged shape, or a partner from far
PiscesThe 3rd and the 8thLove through messages and secrets; the private, intense, communicative bond

Two ascendants have Venus as the seventh lord and two as the fifth; for the other eight, the Venus period brings love through the house Venus rules, and the reading says which door before it says what walks through it.

Layer two: the sign as the love language

The sign Venus occupies is the love language, what the native gives without thinking and needs without asking, and it is the layer that explains most of the friction between two people who love each other. Venus in the fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, loves by pursuit, warmth and freedom, gives generously and needs to be admired and left room; Venus in the earth signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, loves by constancy, service and provision, gives reliably and needs to be able to trust; Venus in the air signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, loves by conversation, fairness and friendship, gives attention and needs to be talked to; Venus in the water signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, loves by feeling, depth and devotion, gives itself and needs to be felt. A Venus in Taurus with a partner whose Venus is in Gemini has constancy meeting conversation, and each thinks the other does not love them because each is looking for their own language; the reading names the two languages and the mistranslation, which is the single most useful thing a synastry reading does, and the twelve sign pages give each language in full. The sign is also read from the Moon’s chart, where Venus’s house from the Moon says how the love is felt rather than how it is given, and a Venus in the same sign for both partners is the couple who never have to explain.

Exalted in Pisces, debilitated in Virgo, at home in Taurus and Libra

Venus exalted in Pisces loves completely and without calculation, the devotion that gives everything and idealises the beloved, and its risk is exactly that, the partner who cannot be the ideal and the native who loves the idea; its natives love well and are sometimes loved badly because they do not notice. Venus in its own signs, Taurus and Libra, loves comfortably and well, Taurus by constancy and pleasure and Libra by fairness and grace, and these are the Venuses that make the ordinary happy marriage. Venus debilitated in Virgo loves by criticism, of the self first and the partner second, the native who finds fault with every possibility and cannot believe they are loved, and its natives are loved more than they know and love more than they show; the debility is cancelled, in the classical way, by Mercury in a kendra or by Venus in a kendra from the Moon, and the cancelled debility gives the native who learned to love by first learning to stop correcting, which is a late and durable love. The dignities are the depth of the well, and the sign is its taste; a debilitated Venus in a chart with the fifth-seventh join still marries for love, and an exalted Venus in a chart without it still does not, which is the houses deciding and Venus colouring, as the first section said.

Layer three: the house where the love lives

The house Venus occupies is where the native’s love lives and where it is met, and the cluster’s earlier pages have used the placements that matter most: Venus in the fifth, in Venus in the fifth, the love that lives in romance and pleasure; in the seventh, in Venus in the seventh, the love that lives in the bond and gives the partner who is the native’s comfort; in the twelfth, in Venus in the twelfth, the love that is private or far. The rest are read in their own pages: Venus in the first, in Venus in the first, gives the native who is loved for themselves and knows it; in the second the love that lives in the family and the table; in the third the love that lives in words; in the fourth the love that lives at home, and the mother’s blessing; in the sixth the love that lives in service and is tested by daily life; in the eighth the love that is intense and transforming; in the ninth the love that is far and sanctioned; in the tenth the love that is public; in the eleventh the love that begins as friendship. The house is also the meeting place, by the same logic the timing page uses, and Venus’s house is the one meeting place that applies whether or not Venus is the carrier, since Venus is always the significator.

Layer four: combust, retrograde, and in company

Venus combust, within the Sun’s degrees, gives the native whose capacity for love is real and unseen, outshone by their own self, who is told they are cold when they are only invisible to themselves; the combust Venus loves in the Sun’s sub-period, when the self is secure enough to be set aside, and the mechanics are in the combustion page. Venus retrograde, in about seven charts in a hundred, gives the native who loves in revisits, whose relationships go back before they go forward, who returns to an ex more than once, and whose bond is made on the second attempt; the retrograde is read as delay rather than denial, as the retrogression page sets out. Venus in company is Venus changed by its neighbour: with Saturn, in Venus with Saturn, the love that waits, is tested and lasts, and fears losing its freedom; with Rahu, in Venus with Rahu, the love that wants what it cannot have and is not satisfied by what it can; with Ketu, in Venus with Ketu, the love that gives without asking and detaches without pain; with Mars, the love that is desire first and is read on the Mars page; with the Moon, the love that is feeling first, tender and changeable; with Jupiter, the love that is sanctioned and generous and sometimes more dutiful than passionate; with Mercury, the love that talks. The condition is the layer the native feels most from inside and can least name, and a reading that gives them the word for it, “your Venus is with Saturn, which is why you wait”, usually explains a decade.

The Venus period for relationships

Venus’s major period is twenty years, and everyone who lives to see it lives inside the significator of love for two decades, in which the whole of what Venus rules for the ascendant is delivered: the bond for Aries and Scorpio, the romance for Gemini and Capricorn, the door for the rest. Its sub-periods run through every planet, and each is read by the pair: Venus-Venus, in the Venus-Venus page, the opening three years and four months, the classical first love or the marriage in an Aries chart; Venus-Saturn, in the Venus-Saturn page, the three years in which love is tested and made permanent or ended; Venus-Rahu the three years of the unusual partner; Venus-Jupiter the sanctioned bond and often the marriage; Venus-Ketu the year of detachment inside the period of love. Venus’s sub-periods inside other major periods are the shorter form of the same, and are the carriers the timing page marks: Venus’s sub-period is one of the seasons in which a relationship begins, in every chart, and its length, about three years in most major periods, is a relationship’s first season. A native entering the Venus period is told what Venus rules for them, since a native who expects twenty years of romance and receives twenty years of the sixth house has been misread by someone who forgot the first layer.

Venus retrograde in transit

Venus turns retrograde for about six weeks every nineteen months, and the six weeks are the reconnection window this cluster’s pages have referred to: the past returns to be reconsidered, an ex writes, an old feeling surfaces, a relationship that was closed is reopened for inspection. What begins under Venus retrograde tends to be a return rather than a beginning, and what is decided under it tends to be revised when it turns direct; the honest use of the transit is to expect the past and not to decide the future in it. Over the native’s fifth or seventh, or over natal Venus, the retrograde is strongest, and a native in a carrier’s sub-period with Venus retrograde over the seventh is the one whose ex calls in that sub-period, which is the ex-return page’s reading. Venus retrograde also marks the six weeks in which a couple should not make the decision they are about to make, and a reading that gives a couple those dates has given them something they can use without believing anything.

The weak Venus: what does and does not help it

A weak Venus, debilitated, combust, in the sixth or twelfth, or afflicted by Saturn and Rahu, is the placement most often sold a remedy, and the reading owes the native a plain account of what does and does not help it. What does not help is the stone, the ritual and the promise, which change nothing in the chart and cost the native the money and the hope; this site sells none of them. What helps, in the chart’s own terms, is three things. The route: a weak Venus is made good by the seventh lord, the Moon and the family, so that a native with a weak Venus and a strong seventh finds love by the seventh’s route, the introduction, the bond that becomes the love, and the reading names the route. The season: a weak Venus is called on in its own sub-period, and even a debilitated Venus delivers in Venus’s sub-period, so that the native who has felt unloved has a season in which they are loved; the reading names it. And the language: a weak Venus in Virgo loves by criticism and needs to learn its own sign’s other gift, service, so that the native who cannot stop correcting learns to give in the form Virgo gives well, which is care; that is not a remedy, it is a description of the native’s own Venus read to its strength, and it is the only kind of help this cluster offers.

A worked chart: exalted in the sixth, loving through service

A Libra lagna woman, particulars altered. Venus, the lagna lord and lord of the eighth, sits in Pisces in the sixth, exalted: the self’s own planet and the significator of love, at its best, in the house of service, work and the daily test. Mars, lord of the second and seventh, sits in Capricorn in the fourth, exalted, aspecting the seventh from there, its own house, and the tenth and eleventh. Saturn, lord of the fourth and fifth, sits in Libra in the lagna, exalted, with the Moon, lord of the tenth. Jupiter, lord of the third and sixth, sits in Cancer in the tenth, exalted. The Sun, lord of the eleventh, sits in Aquarius in the fifth with Mercury, lord of the ninth and twelfth. Rahu sits in Gemini in the ninth, Ketu in Sagittarius in the third. Four layers: Venus rules the first and the eighth for Libra, the self and the transformation; the sign is Pisces, devotion, complete and idealising; the house is the sixth, service; the condition is exalted and unafflicted, with the Sun a sign away and no conjunction.

The reading from the four layers: this native loves by devotion and service, gives completely, needs to be felt, meets love in the workplace or in caring for someone, and is changed by every relationship because her Venus rules her eighth; her risk is Pisces’s, the partner who is an idea, and her strength is the exalted significator, the well as deep as the chart makes it. Her Venus period began at twenty-two. Venus-Venus, the lagna lord’s own opening, was the years of the self, study and the first work, in the sixth house’s setting, a hospital; Venus-Sun, the eleventh lord in the fifth, was the first romance, through a friend, a year, light and unreturned in the way Pisces loves the idea; Venus-Moon, the tenth lord in the lagna, was the work becoming a vocation and the love that lived in it, since exalted Venus in the sixth loves through service and she loved her patients before she loved anyone; Venus-Mars, the seventh lord’s sub-period, exalted in the fourth and aspecting its own house, was the bond, a colleague, met in the sixth house’s own setting, and the marriage in the fourth lord’s house’s way, with both families and a home, in the month Jupiter transited Aries, her seventh. The reading, given in Venus-Moon, had said: the bond is in the next sub-period, the seventh lord’s, met at work, a man of discipline, since exalted Mars in Capricorn describes him, and the marriage is a domestic one; and the one caution was Pisces’s, that she would love him for what he could be and should look, in the first year, at what he was, which the exalted Venus makes hard and the exalted Saturn in the lagna makes possible. That is Venus read in four layers and one sentence each, and the sentence that mattered was the last.

Frequently asked questions

What does Venus signify in relationships?

Attraction in both directions, pleasure, the way a native loves without thinking and the way they need to be loved without asking, and in the classical texts the spouse in a man’s chart, with Jupiter taking that role in a woman’s. It is not the bond itself, which is the seventh house, or the romance itself, which is the fifth; a chart can have a magnificent Venus and a silent seventh. Venus is the quality of the loving, and the houses are whether and when.

How is Venus read for relationships?

In four layers, in order: what Venus rules for the ascendant, which decides what its period brings, the seventh for Aries and Scorpio, the fifth for Gemini and Capricorn, and a different door for the other eight; the sign, which is the love language, fire by pursuit, earth by constancy, air by conversation, water by feeling; the house, where the love lives and is met; and the condition, exalted, debilitated, combust, retrograde, or with Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or Mars, which shapes the love from inside.

What does a weak Venus mean for love life?

Debilitated in Virgo, Venus loves by criticism and cannot believe it is loved; combust, its capacity is real and unseen; in the sixth or twelfth, love lives in service or in private; with Saturn it waits, with Rahu it wants what it cannot have, with Ketu it gives without asking. A weak Venus does not deny love; it makes love come by other routes, the seventh lord’s, the Moon’s, the family’s, and it delivers in its own sub-period. No stone or ritual strengthens it; the reading names the route, the season and the sign’s own gift.

Which Venus sign is best for love?

None is best; each is a language. Exalted in Pisces loves completely and idealises; at home in Taurus and Libra loves comfortably by constancy and by fairness, the ordinary happy marriage; debilitated in Virgo loves by service once it stops correcting. Two partners with Venus in the same element never have to explain themselves, and two in different elements, constancy meeting conversation for instance, need the mistranslation named, which is the most useful thing a synastry reading does.

What does the Venus mahadasha bring for relationships?

Twenty years of whatever Venus rules for the ascendant: the bond and marriage for Aries and Scorpio, romance for Gemini and Capricorn, and love through the ruled house for the rest, the workplace for Leo and Capricorn, the friends for Cancer and Sagittarius, the home for Cancer and Aquarius. Its sub-periods are read by the pair, Venus-Venus as first love or marriage, Venus-Saturn as the test that makes a bond permanent, Venus-Rahu as the unusual partner, Venus-Jupiter as the sanctioned bond. A native expecting twenty years of romance and getting the sixth house was misread on the first layer.

What does Venus retrograde do to relationships?

Natal, in about seven charts in a hundred, it gives the native who loves in revisits, whose relationships go back before they go forward and whose bond is made on the second attempt; delay, not denial. In transit, six weeks every nineteen months, it is the reconnection window: the ex writes, the old feeling surfaces, what begins is a return rather than a beginning, and what is decided is revised when Venus turns direct. Couples should not make their big decision in those six weeks.

Is Venus the significator of the spouse for everyone?

The classical texts make Venus the spouse significator in a man’s chart and Jupiter in a woman’s, and that assignment is used when the spouse’s nature is being described. For the native’s own way of loving, what they give and need, Venus is read the same for everyone, and the pages of this cluster read it so. A woman’s chart is read for her spouse through the seventh lord, the Navamsa, the Darakaraka and Jupiter, and for her own loving through Venus, and the two readings answer different questions.
