“Commitment phobia” is not a term the chart uses, but the thing it names is in every chart that has a seventh house, and the reading’s first job is to separate three conditions the phrase runs together. Not ready is a period: a native in a Ketu, Saturn or twelfth-lord sub-period, or three sub-periods away from the seventh lord’s, does not commit because the season does not carry bonds, and the season passes. Not able yet is a natal condition: a seventh house held by Saturn, Ketu or Rahu, or a seventh lord in the twelfth, retrograde or combust, that cannot carry a bond until the planet has finished with it, which takes years and usually a Saturn return. And not this person is neither a fear nor a fault: the seventh house is open and the person in front of it does not match, which the earlier pages of this cluster read. The partner waiting for a commitment needs to know which of the three they are facing, because waiting is the answer to the first, patience with a date is the answer to the second, and the third has no answer that waiting gives. This article reads all three, from the reluctant native’s own chart and from the waiting partner’s side of it.
It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. Whether a particular relationship reaches its marriage window is Will I Marry the Person I Love?; the partner who seems to want the relationship kept outside marriage altogether is read in the KP page on live-in relationships; and Saturn’s whole relationship with bonds, the delay, the test and the late reward, is in Saturn and Relationships.
Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha; the seventh house and its lord as the capacity for a bond, the fifth as the romance that does not need one, the twelfth as distance and the eighth as the fear of the bond’s cost; transits of Saturn and Jupiter over the seventh. Reluctance is read as a tendency of the houses and a season of the periods, never as a diagnosis; a fear that persists in every relationship and harms the native is for a counsellor, and the chart’s contribution is to name its shape and its season. The other person is read only from their own chart.

Not ready, not able yet, or not this person: the chart says which.
A relationship consultation reads the reluctant chart, yours or your partner's, for the signature behind the hesitation and the sub-period in which the seventh house begins to carry a bond, and tells you plainly whether the wait has a date, whether the fear lifts with Saturn's test, or whether the door is open and the match is the problem.

Three conditions the phrase runs together
The waiting partner experiences one thing, a person who will not commit, and the chart finds three. Not ready is read from the dasha: the reluctant native is in a sub-period that does not carry bonds, Ketu’s, Saturn’s, the twelfth lord’s, the eighth lord’s, or is several sub-periods from the seventh lord’s, and the reluctance has an end date, which is the arrival of the seventh lord’s or Venus’s sub-period. Not able yet is read from the natal seventh: a house held by a planet that closes it, Saturn, Ketu, Rahu, or a seventh lord in a condition that cannot carry, retrograde, combust, in the twelfth, and the reluctance lasts until the planet’s work is done, which for Saturn is the first return around twenty-nine to thirty and for the others a major period, so that the not-able chart is the one that commits after thirty, often to the person it refused at twenty-six. Not this person is read from the match: the seventh is open, the period is right, and the person does not fit the spouse the chart describes, so that the reluctance is accuracy rather than fear, and the reading of it is the double-window test on the earlier page. The three look identical from across the table and are as different as a season, a structure and a fact, and the reading that does not separate them tells a partner to wait for a structure or to leave a season.
The seventh house as capacity, and what holds it shut
The seventh house is the capacity for a bond, and its lord’s condition is the capacity’s state: a dignified seventh lord in a kendra or trikona gives the native who can commit and does when the period allows; a seventh lord in a dusthana, in the sixth, the eighth or the twelfth, gives the native for whom the bond is a cost, a crisis or a distance, and who hesitates at the door because the door leads somewhere the chart marks as difficult. What holds the house shut is the planet on it. Saturn on the seventh delays and tests, and the native commits late and once; Ketu on it detaches, and the native does not feel the need; Rahu on it wants and is not satisfied, and the native commits and un-commits; Mars on it fights at the threshold; the Sun on it puts the self before the partner and commits when the self is secure; the Moon on it needs and fears needing. The twelve placements of the lord are in the seventh lord in the twelve houses, and the occupants in their own pages; what this page adds is the reading of them as a capacity with a season, since every one of these placements commits eventually, in the sub-period that carries it, and the reluctance the partner is facing is the chart’s before-time.
Saturn on the seventh: the long test
Saturn on the seventh, or aspecting the seventh lord, or with Venus, gives the reluctance the phrase was invented for, and it is not a phobia; it is a test with a length. The Saturn native does not commit until the bond has been tested for duty, time and reliability, until they are sure of the other and of themselves, and until, usually, Saturn’s own first return has passed, around the twenty-ninth to thirtieth year, after which the same native who refused at twenty-six proposes at thirty-one to the same person or a similar one. Before the return, every relationship reaches the door and stops there; after it, the door opens once and stays open, since Saturn’s bonds, when made, are the longest the chart makes. The placement is read in Saturn in the seventh and the conjunction in Venus with Saturn, and the late marriage that results, with what is and is not worth doing about it, in Late Marriage and Saturn. The partner of a Saturn native should be told the return’s date and the seventh lord’s next sub-period, because a wait for Saturn has a calendar, and a Saturn native pressed before the calendar leaves rather than commits, which the partner reads as fear and the chart reads as Saturn refusing to be hurried.
The seventh lord retrograde, combust or in the twelfth
Three conditions of the seventh lord give a reluctance that is not a planet on the house but the house’s own ruler unable to carry. The seventh lord retrograde gives the native who revisits: commits, withdraws, returns, the bond made and unmade in cycles, and the commitment that holds is made in the seventh lord’s own sub-period or when the lord is direct by transit over its natal place; the general reading of retrogression as delay against denial is in the retrogression page. The seventh lord combust, within the Sun’s degrees, gives the native whose self overrides the partner, who cannot see the other clearly because the Sun outshines the seventh’s planet, and who commits when their own standing is secure, in the Sun’s sub-period or after a tenth-house achievement; the mechanics are in the combustion page. The seventh lord in the twelfth gives the native who loves at a distance and commits abroad or to someone far away, who hesitates at a bond that would be near, and who is, in the Aquarius chart worked below, the type of this whole page. None of the three is a refusal; each is a seventh lord that carries the bond in its own way and in its own time, and the reading names the way and the time.
Ketu’s detachment and Rahu’s next one
Ketu on the seventh, in Ketu in the seventh, gives the native who does not feel the need for the bond, who is in the relationship and content to leave it undefined, and whose partner experiences the contentment as a refusal. It is the hardest reluctance to wait out because there is nothing to wait for, no fear that lifts and no test that ends; what changes it is a sub-period that activates the seventh from outside, Venus’s, Jupiter’s, the seventh lord’s, in which the Ketu native commits without drama and often without quite deciding to. Rahu on the seventh, in Rahu in the seventh, gives the opposite: the native who wants the bond intensely and is not satisfied by any particular one, for whom every partner is the wrong one once they are the partner, who commits and un-commits, and whose reluctance is an appetite for the next. The Rahu native commits when Rahu’s sub-period ends or when the dispositor’s sub-period gives the appetite a form, and commits well when the partner is Rahu’s kind, the outsider, the unusual one. The partner of a Ketu native should know that the calm is not a no; the partner of a Rahu native should know that the intensity is not a yes.
Eleven signatures, the shape of each, and when it lifts
| Signature | The shape of the reluctance | When it lifts |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn on the 7th, or aspecting the 7th lord | The long test; commits late and once | After the first Saturn return, in the 7th lord’s or Saturn’s sub-period |
| Venus with Saturn | Fear of losing freedom and pleasure to duty | Saturn’s sub-period, once the duty is chosen |
| 7th lord retrograde | Commits, withdraws, returns; cycles | The 7th lord’s own sub-period, or its direct transit over its natal place |
| 7th lord combust | The self before the partner; cannot see the other clearly | The Sun’s sub-period, or after a 10th-house achievement |
| 7th lord in the 12th | Loves at a distance; the bond that is near feels like loss | The 7th lord’s sub-period, often with a partner from far away |
| 7th lord in the 6th or 8th | The bond as a cost or a crisis; hesitates at the door | Jupiter’s transit over the 7th, in a Venus or 7th lord sub-period |
| Ketu on the 7th | Does not feel the need; content undefined | A sub-period activating the 7th from outside: Venus, Jupiter, the 7th lord |
| Rahu on the 7th, or with the 7th lord | Wants intensely, satisfied by none; commits and un-commits | The end of Rahu’s sub-period, or the dispositor’s; with Rahu’s kind of partner |
| Mars on the 7th | Fights at the threshold; the quarrel before the bond | Venus’s or Jupiter’s sub-period, when the fight has been had |
| The Moon afflicted in the 7th or 4th | Needs and fears needing; insecurity dressed as independence | The Moon’s or 4th lord’s sub-period, with a partner who is steady |
| 5th strong, 7th weak and unoccupied | Romance without the bond; the fifth-house lover | Only when the 7th lord’s sub-period arrives; before it, the romance is the whole of it |
Two signatures together make the not-able chart; one signature with a period that does not carry bonds is the not-ready chart; none, with an open seventh, is the not-this-person chart, and the third column is the reason the reading is worth having, since every row on it has a season.
The fifth-house lover: romance without the bond
One reluctance is not a fear at all but a preference of the houses. A native with a strong fifth, Venus, Jupiter or the Moon there, or its lord dignified, and a weak, unoccupied seventh has a chart built for romance and not for the bond, and lives a series of loves that are complete in themselves and do not ask to become anything else. The partner of such a native mistakes the quality of the romance for the promise of a bond, since the romance is real, and waits for a seventh house that is not being used. The reading here is honest in both directions: the fifth-house lover is not deceiving anyone, and is not going to commit until the seventh lord’s sub-period arrives, which may be years, and when it does the commitment is often to someone else, because the fifth and the seventh in this chart are not joined. The fifth-house lover’s own reading is that the seventh will have its season and that the romances before it are not failures; the partner’s reading is the date of that season and the question of whether the relationship can hold until it, which the double-window test on the earlier page answers. The fifth house’s romance and the seventh’s bond as two different things is the subject of the technical page in this cluster, The 5th and 7th Houses Together.
Reading your own pattern
The native who recognises themselves on this page, who has ended three relationships at the door and does not know why, reads their own chart for two things. The signature, from the table, which names the shape of the reluctance and gives it a planet, so that the native who has been told they are afraid of intimacy can be told instead that they have Saturn on the seventh and a test with a length, or Ketu there and a contentment the partners misread, or a seventh lord in the twelfth and a bond that wants distance. And the season: the sub-period in which the seventh begins to carry, which is a date on the dasha table and usually the most useful sentence the native hears, because it converts a self-description that has no end into a calendar. The pattern is not a sentence on the native. Every signature on the table commits in its season, and the natives who commit late by Saturn make the longest marriages the chart records; the native’s task is to know their season and not to force a bond before it, since the forced bond is the one this chart breaks. What the chart cannot do is distinguish a Saturn seventh from a harm the native carries from before, and a reluctance that comes with dread in every relationship, not just at the door, is the one to take to a counsellor with the chart’s reading in hand rather than instead of it.
The waiting partner: reading the other’s chart
The partner who is waiting reads the other’s chart for the three conditions and gets three different instructions. If the reluctant chart is not ready, in a sub-period that does not carry bonds, the instruction is to wait for the named sub-period and to expect nothing before it; the waiting has a date and the date is the whole of the answer. If the chart is not able yet, with a signature from the table, the instruction is patience with a longer date, Saturn’s return or the seventh lord’s major period, and a decision about whether that date is one the partner can wait for, which is the partner’s to make and the chart cannot make for them. If the chart is not this person, an open seventh with a period that carries and a partner who does not match its description, the instruction is the hardest and the most useful: nothing the waiting partner does changes the match, and the relationship is a fifth-house one for the other whatever it is for them. The partner’s own chart is read beside it, for their own season and their own pattern, since a waiting partner in their seventh lord’s sub-period facing a not-able chart is the commonest mismatch of windows in this subject, and it resolves the way the earlier page describes; the other person’s feelings, as opposed to their capacity, are the subject of Does He Love Me?.
What waiting does, and does not do
Waiting works on the not-ready chart, because the reluctance is a season and the season ends; a partner who waits through a Ketu sub-period for the Venus sub-period that follows it has waited well. Waiting works on the not-able chart only when the partner can wait until the date, and the date is real: a Saturn native at twenty-five will commit at thirty and not before, and a partner who can hold five years holds a marriage at the end of it, while a partner who cannot should not be told they can. Waiting does nothing on the not-this-person chart, and the reading says so plainly, because the partner waiting for a match that is not there is waiting for the other’s seventh lord’s sub-period, which will arrive and commit to someone else. What waiting never does is change the signature; no amount of patience turns a Rahu seventh into a Saturn one, and the partner who thinks their steadiness will cure the other’s appetite is reading their own chart. The transits give the waiting its seasons, Saturn over the reluctant native’s seventh, in Saturn’s transit through the seventh, being the two and a half years in which no commitment should be expected and after which one may, and Jupiter over it, in Jupiter’s transit through the seventh, the year in which the not-able chart most often crosses the door.
A worked chart: three endings at the door, a marriage at thirty-seven
An Aquarius lagna man, particulars altered. The Sun, lord of the seventh, sits in Capricorn in the twelfth with Saturn, the lagna lord and lord of the twelfth: the seventh lord in the twelfth, with Saturn, in Saturn’s sign; the bond at a distance and under test. Jupiter, lord of the second and eleventh, sits in Leo in the seventh: the house of the bond occupied by the sanctioning benefic, the capacity for a good marriage, its lord unable to carry it yet. Venus, lord of the fourth and ninth, sits in Sagittarius in the eleventh with Rahu. Mars, lord of the third and tenth, sits in Aries in the third, its own sign. Mercury, lord of the fifth and eighth, sits in Aquarius in the lagna, the romance and the crisis in one planet on the self. The Moon, lord of the sixth, sits in Scorpio in the tenth, debilitated. Ketu sits in Gemini in the fifth. Two signatures from the table, the seventh lord in the twelfth and Saturn with it, and a third from Ketu’s presence on the romance house rather than the bond.
Saturn’s major period ran from his twelfth year to his thirty-first, the lagna and twelfth lord’s period with the seventh lord in its sign: nineteen years in which the bond was the twelfth’s distance. Three relationships ended at the door. The first, in Saturn-Venus, a four-year relationship that ended when marriage was raised; the second, in Saturn-Moon, with a woman abroad, the twelfth’s distance literal, that ended when she asked him to move; the third, in Saturn-Rahu, the Rahu that sits with Venus, intense and unsatisfiable, which ended twice. He was not afraid, he said, and the chart agreed: he was in Saturn’s period with the seventh lord in the twelfth, and the door was not yet a door. Mercury’s major period began at thirty-one, the fifth and eighth lord’s, and Mercury-Venus, from his thirty-fourth year, brought a relationship that began, for the first time, as a romance rather than a distance, Venus being the fourth and ninth lord, a woman from his own city and his own tradition. The reading, given in Mercury-Venus when the old pattern was expected to repeat, said: the pattern belonged to Saturn’s period and Saturn’s period is over; the seventh lord’s sub-period, Mercury-Sun, arrives in his thirty-seventh year and is ten months long; Jupiter transits Leo, his seventh, in that year; the door opens then and once. He married in Mercury-Sun, in the seventh month of it, with Jupiter in Leo, at thirty-seven, the seventh-house Jupiter delivering the marriage its capacity had always held, and the reluctance that three women had called a phobia had been Saturn’s period and the twelfth house, both of which have ends.
Frequently asked questions
Which planet causes fear of commitment?
Saturn on the seventh house or aspecting its lord gives the long test, the native who commits late and once; Ketu on the seventh gives detachment, the native who does not feel the need; Rahu on it gives the appetite that no particular partner satisfies; Mars fights at the threshold; and a seventh lord retrograde, combust or in the twelfth cannot carry the bond in the ordinary way until its own sub-period. Each is a shape of reluctance with a season, not a phobia, and each commits when the season arrives.
How do I know if my partner has commitment issues from their chart?
Read their seventh house for the signatures: Saturn, Ketu or Rahu on it, Venus with Saturn, the seventh lord retrograde, combust or in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, or a strong fifth with an empty seventh, which is the romance without the bond. Then read their current sub-period, since a native in a Ketu, Saturn or twelfth-lord sub-period does not commit whatever their seventh looks like. Two signatures make the not-able-yet chart; a bond-averse sub-period alone makes the not-ready one; neither, with an open seventh, means the reluctance is about the match.
Will a person with Saturn in the 7th house ever commit?
Yes, late and once, and the marriage is usually the longest the chart makes. The Saturn native commits after the bond has been tested for duty and time and usually after the first Saturn return around twenty-nine to thirty, in Saturn’s or the seventh lord’s sub-period; before the return every relationship reaches the door and stops. A partner who presses the Saturn native before the calendar gets a departure rather than a commitment, and the useful reading gives the partner the return’s date and the next carrying sub-period.
Is fear of commitment permanent according to astrology?
No. Every signature of reluctance has a season in which it lifts: Saturn’s after the return, the retrograde seventh lord’s in its own sub-period, the combust one’s when the self is secure, Ketu’s when Venus, Jupiter or the seventh lord activates the house from outside, Rahu’s when its sub-period ends. What does not change is the signature itself, so the native commits in their own way and not in a different one. A reluctance that comes with dread in every relationship and not only at the door is the one to take to a counsellor with the chart’s reading in hand.
Should I wait for a partner who will not commit?
It depends which of three conditions their chart shows. Not ready, a sub-period that does not carry bonds, is worth waiting for because it has a date. Not able yet, a natal signature, is worth waiting for only if you can wait until its real date, Saturn’s return or the seventh lord’s period, which is your decision and not the chart’s. Not this person, an open seventh in a carrying period with a partner who does not match its description, is not changed by waiting, because their seventh lord’s sub-period will arrive and commit to someone who does.
What is the difference between not ready and commitment phobia?
Not ready is a period and passes: the native is in a Ketu, Saturn, twelfth-lord or eighth-lord sub-period or is sub-periods away from the seventh lord’s, and the reluctance ends when the carrying sub-period arrives. What people call commitment phobia is usually the natal signature, a seventh house held by Saturn, Ketu or Rahu or a seventh lord that cannot carry, which lasts until the planet’s work is done, often a Saturn return or a major period. Both have ends; the first is months and the second years.
Can a person with commitment issues be pushed into marriage?
The chart’s answer is that a bond forced before its season is the bond this chart breaks, since a Saturn native pressed before the return leaves, a Rahu native pressed commits and un-commits, and a retrograde seventh lord pressed withdraws. The reading gives the season instead, the sub-period and the Jupiter transit in which the door opens on its own, and the partner’s choice is whether to wait for it, which the chart cannot make for them and does not try to.

A season, a structure, or a fact: the wait has a different answer for each.
A relationship consultation reads the reluctant chart, yours or your partner's, names the signature and the sub-period in which the seventh house begins to carry, distinguishes not ready from not able from not this person, and tells the waiting partner whether the wait has a date and what it is.
