Debt in the Chart: Loans, Repayment and the 6th House

Three questions arrive about debt and they are three different readings. Will the loan be sanctioned is a question about the sixth house and the eleventh, a loan being a gain that arrives with an obligation attached. Will I be able to repay is a question about the sixth against the twelfth, and about Saturn’s condition. When will I be free of it is a date, read from the dasha table and the transits like any other event. The classical texts treat debt, rina, as one of the sixth house’s three burdens with disease and enemies, and the modern chart is full of it in forms the texts did not imagine, the card, the personal loan, the mortgage, the business line, the money lent to a brother. This article reads all of them through the same houses, and it keeps to the chart’s side of the subject: which charts borrow and which lend, when debt is taken and when it clears, and where the trap is.

It belongs to the complete wealth astrology guide. Debt as part of a structural money problem is in Money Problems in the Chart, and the sixth-lord sub-periods as loss seasons in Financial Loss Periods; this page is the sixth house read on its own.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha, transits of Saturn and Jupiter. Debt is the sixth house, repayment the twelfth, the loan as gain the eleventh, and Saturn and Mars its significators. Nothing on this page is lending or borrowing advice; whether to take or give a loan is a decision for the native and a planner, and the chart reads only tendency and timing.

In this article

The sixth house as debt, and the houses around it

The sixth house is debt: money owed, the obligation that has to be serviced, the burden carried and, on its better side, the capacity to carry it. A strong sixth gives the native who can borrow, service and clear; a weak or afflicted sixth gives the one for whom every loan becomes a weight. Around it, the twelfth is repayment, the outflow that clears, and also the loss when the outflow clears nothing; the eleventh is the loan as it arrives, a gain with a string attached; the second is the savings that debt eats or protects; the eighth is money owed to the native by others and the debt of others generally; the fourth is the mortgage, debt secured on the home; and the seventh is the partner’s debt and the debt of a business. A debt reading walks these in order, sixth, twelfth, eleventh, second, and it reads the sixth lord’s placement first because that placement says whether the native carries debt or is carried by it.

The planets that borrow, and the planet that lends

Saturn and Mars are the significators of the sixth, and they borrow in different ways. Saturn’s debt is long, institutional and secured, the mortgage and the business loan, serviced over years; its dignity decides whether the long debt is a structure or a sentence. Mars’s debt is quick, the loan taken in haste for a purchase or a fight, and Mars on the sixth or the second is the native who borrows on impulse and repays with effort. Mercury is the paperwork and the card, the small debts that multiply; Rahu is credit at scale, the loan taken for a surge, the leverage that works until it does not; Venus is consumption debt, the money borrowed for comfort and appearance; the Moon is emotional borrowing, the loan taken in a crisis of the family. Jupiter is the other side: the lender, the bank as institution, the trust on which credit is extended, and Jupiter’s aspect on the sixth or the eleventh is what gets the loan sanctioned and what protects the native from the worst of it.

Borrower or lender: what the chart says

The sixth lord dignified, in its own sign or exalted, in a kendra or trikona, gives the chart of the lender, the native who works in credit, who extends it wisely, who carries debt as a tool; Jupiter in the sixth is close to a definition of the banker. The sixth lord afflicted, debilitated or combust, and placed on the second or the eleventh, gives the chart of the borrower, whose savings and gains are routed through obligation. The sixth lord on the second is income that arrives owed; the second lord in the sixth is savings that service debt; the sixth lord on the eleventh is the gain that is a loan; and the sixth lord in the twelfth is the Vipreet formation, debt that dissolves or is written off, which sounds like a blessing and in practice gives both the escaped debt and the reputation that goes with it. The placements of the sixth lord, house by house, are read in the sixth lord in the twelve houses.

The three questions and their three readings

Will the loan come is the eleventh and the sixth together: a loan is sanctioned in a sub-period of the sixth or eleventh lord, with Jupiter’s transit over the sixth, the eleventh or the fourth for a home loan, and a chart with the sixth lord and the eleventh lord in connection gets credit easily all its life, which is a mixed gift. Will I repay is the sixth against the twelfth: a dignified sixth lord with a working twelfth lord repays, a weak sixth lord with an afflicted twelfth lord struggles, and Saturn’s condition is the tie-breaker, because Saturn dignified carries the long obligation and Saturn afflicted buckles under it. When will I be free is a date: debt clears in the twelfth lord’s sub-periods when the twelfth lord is dignified, since the outflow that clears is the twelfth’s business; in Jupiter’s transit over the sixth or the twelfth; and, most reliably, when the sixth lord’s major or sub-period ends and a money lord’s begins. The three questions are asked together and answered separately, and the reading that answers the first without the third has sanctioned a loan without saying when it will be gone.

The table gives the tendency of each placement and the period in which it acts; the individual chart’s dignity and denials decide how strongly.

Good debt and bad debt in the chart

The chart distinguishes debt by which house it serves. The mortgage is the fourth financed through the sixth, and with Saturn dignified it is the good debt of the zodiac, the obligation that builds an asset, cleared in Saturn’s own sub-periods and in the fourth lord’s. The business loan is the seventh or tenth financed through the sixth, and it is good when the seventh and tenth lords are strong enough to earn the interest, bad when they are not. The education loan is the ninth or fourth through the sixth, and it is read by whether the ninth lord’s period follows. Consumption debt is the sixth serving Venus and the Moon, comfort and mood, and it is the debt the chart marks as bad in almost every case, because nothing on the other side of it earns. And the speculation loan is the fifth financed through the sixth, the worst of all, the credit taken to bet, and a chart with the fifth lord and the sixth lord connected should be told plainly never to borrow to speculate. The reading of the fifth house’s risk, who can afford it and who cannot, is in Risk Appetite in the Chart.

The debt trap: borrowing in sixth-lord sub-periods

The trap has a mechanism, and it is the sixth lord’s sub-period. In that period credit is easiest to get, the offers arrive, the sanction is quick, and the native who borrows then borrows at the top of the sixth’s tide, so that repayment falls in the sub-periods that follow, which belong to other planets with other agendas. The native with the sixth lord on the second or eleventh feels this as a cycle: a loan in each sixth-lord sub-period, serviced through the next two, refinanced in the next sixth-lord sub-period, the total never falling. Rahu with the sixth lord adds scale to the cycle, and Saturn afflicted adds the sense that it will never end. The reading breaks the cycle by naming it: no new borrowing in sixth-lord sub-periods whatever the offer, the smallest debt cleared first in the twelfth lord’s, and the surplus of a money lord’s period sent to principal rather than to the next purchase. It is unglamorous advice and it follows from the placements, which is why it works.

Timing: taking the loan, repaying it, being free of it

A loan taken in a sixth or eleventh lord sub-period with Jupiter transiting the sixth, eleventh or fourth is sanctioned easily and, in a strong chart, serviced easily; the same loan taken in a twelfth-lord sub-period is the one that becomes a weight. Repayment goes best in the twelfth lord’s sub-periods when that lord is dignified, in Saturn’s sub-periods for long debt, and in the second lord’s when the savings are strong. The debt-free moment, the question most often asked, has three signals like every recovery: the sixth lord’s period giving way to a money lord’s, Saturn’s transit leaving the sixth or twelfth, and Jupiter’s transit over the sixth or the twelfth, which is the transit under which the last instalment is usually paid. A reading of a native in debt should produce a year, not a hope, and the year is read from those three. The general logic of money periods, which the debt periods sit inside, is in Which Mahadasha Brings Money?.

Standing guarantor and lending to others

Money lent by the native is the eighth house, other people’s debt, and whether it comes back is the eighth lord’s condition and the sixth lord’s: a dignified eighth lord returns what was lent, an afflicted one does not, and Ketu on the eighth or the eleventh is the money that was never coming back and the native who knew it. Standing guarantor is the seventh and the eighth together, the partner’s debt made the native’s, and a chart with the seventh lord afflicted and connected to the sixth should be warned, in the plainest terms, against signing for anyone; the sub-periods of the seventh lord in such a chart are when the guarantee is called. Lending to a brother is the third with the eighth, to a child the fifth with the eighth, and in both the reading names the period in which the loan should be treated as a gift, because the chart already has.

A worked chart: income that arrived as loans

A Sagittarius lagna chart, particulars altered, an ascendant for which Venus rules both the sixth and the eleventh, so that gains and debts belong to one planet. Venus sits in Capricorn in the second with Rahu: the loan and the gain inside the savings, at scale. Saturn, lord of the second and third, is in Aquarius, its own sign, in the third. Mars, lord of the fifth and twelfth, is in Aries, its own sign, in the fifth. Jupiter, lord of the lagna and fourth, is in Pisces, its own sign, in the fourth. The Sun, lord of the ninth, and Mercury, lord of the seventh and tenth, sit in Sagittarius in the lagna. The Moon, lord of the eighth, is in Leo in the ninth. Ketu is in Cancer in the eighth.

Read it by the table. The sixth lord on the second with Rahu: income that arrives owed, credit that comes easily and at scale, and the cycle in every sixth-lord sub-period. The twelfth lord in its own sign in the fifth: repayment is possible but the outflow also goes to speculation and children. The lagna lord in its own sign in the fourth, aspecting the eighth, the tenth and the twelfth from there: Jupiter’s protection on repayment and on other people’s money, the lender’s trust, and the mortgage as the good debt available to him. Ketu on the eighth: money lent to others does not return and he does not chase it.

Venus’s major period, the sixth and eleventh lord’s, ran twenty years from his twenty-eighth: a good salary, a card and then two personal loans, refinanced in each Venus sub-period, the total never falling, exactly the cycle. Venus-Rahu was the peak of it, a loan for a venture that was Rahu’s kind of surge and the sixth’s kind of weight. The reading, done in Venus-Rahu, named the mechanism and the way out: no new borrowing, the smallest debt first in Venus-Jupiter, and the consumer debt replaced by the one good debt his chart carried, a home loan on the fourth house that Jupiter rules and sits in, at a fraction of the cost. Venus-Jupiter did that; Venus-Saturn, the second lord in its own sign, was the repayment discipline, the savings sent to principal for the first time in his life. The Sun’s major period, the ninth lord in the lagna, began at forty-eight, the sixth lord’s period over and a fortune lord’s begun, and the reading had marked the debt-free year as the one in which Jupiter transited Taurus, his sixth house, inside it. The last instalment of the home loan is not due yet, but the debt that had never fallen in twenty years was gone in that year, and the mortgage that replaced it is Saturn’s kind, the kind that builds.

What the chart does not decide

It does not decide whether to borrow, lend, guarantee or refinance; the chart reads tendency and timing and the decision belongs to the native and a planner, and nothing on this page is advice about any loan. It does not sanction a loan, and a sixth-lord window is a season in which the sanction is likelier, not a promise of one. It does not clear debt; the twelfth lord’s sub-period is when the outflow clears most, provided the native sends it to principal. It rests on the birth time, since the sixth, twelfth, second and eleventh are whole signs. And the KP system reads the same questions through the sub-lords of the sixth, eleventh and twelfth cusps, a separate instrument set out in debt, loans and recovery in KP, and the two are not combined in one reading.

Frequently asked questions

Which house is for loans in astrology?

The sixth house is debt, the obligation carried; the eleventh is the loan as it arrives, a gain with a string attached; the twelfth is repayment, the outflow that clears; the second is the savings that debt eats or protects; the fourth is the mortgage; the eighth is money owed to the native by others. A debt reading walks them in that order, and the sixth lord’s placement is read first.

Which planet causes debt?

Saturn and Mars are the significators of the sixth house. Saturn’s debt is long, institutional and secured, the mortgage and the business loan; Mars’s is quick and impulsive. Rahu adds leverage at scale, Mercury the card and the paperwork, Venus consumption debt and the Moon the emotional loan taken in a family crisis. Jupiter is the lender, and its aspect on the sixth or eleventh is what sanctions and protects.

Will I get a loan according to astrology?

A loan is sanctioned most easily in a sub-period of the sixth or eleventh lord, with Jupiter transiting the sixth, the eleventh or, for a home loan, the fourth, and a chart with the sixth and eleventh lords in connection gets credit easily all its life. The reading names the season in which sanction is likelier; it does not promise one, and it answers the question about repayment in the same breath.

When will I be debt free?

On three signals: the sixth lord’s major or sub-period giving way to a money lord’s, Saturn’s transit leaving the sixth or twelfth house, and Jupiter’s transit over the sixth or the twelfth, under which the last instalment is usually paid. Repayment itself goes best in a dignified twelfth lord’s sub-periods and in Saturn’s for long debt. The reading produces a year from those three, provided the surplus of the money periods is sent to principal.

Does Rahu cause debt?

Rahu with the sixth lord, or on the sixth or second, gives leverage at scale, the loan taken for a surge, and it works until Rahu’s second half, when the surge reverses and the debt remains. A Rahu sub-period is the peak of the borrowing cycle in such a chart, and the defence is to convert what Rahu’s credit built into something durable before its reversal.

Is taking a loan good in Saturn dasha?

For Saturn’s own kind of debt, long, secured and productive, the mortgage above all, a dignified Saturn’s period is the right time, and the loan is serviced with the discipline the period brings. For consumption or speculation debt it is the wrong time in any period. An afflicted Saturn’s period is the one in which long debt buckles the native, and no new obligation should be taken in it.

Which dasha is good for repaying loans?

The twelfth lord’s sub-periods, when that lord is dignified, because the outflow that clears is the twelfth’s business; Saturn’s sub-periods for long and secured debt; and the second lord’s when the savings are strong. The sixth lord’s own sub-periods are for holding, not repaying: they are when credit is easiest and the cycle of refinancing begins, and the first rule of a debt reading is no new borrowing in them.
