The 5th lord in the 10th house turns the creative and judging faculty into the profession. What these natives are naturally good at is what they are paid and known for, which is a closer alignment between aptitude and occupation than most charts manage.
This is the strongest position in the 5th lord series. No ascendant lands debilitated, one lands exalted, three gain directional strength, and three carry a yogakaraka, one of which holds four separate advantages at once and is the single best cell this lord produces anywhere.
It is also where the Raja Yoga question, denied on the 5th lord in the 9th house page, genuinely applies.
This page belongs to the 5th lord in all 12 houses guide. For how house lords are read at all, see the house lords complete guide.

Find your 5th lord
The 5th lord is the planet ruling the fifth sign from your ascendant. Aries has Leo, so the Sun. Taurus has Virgo, so Mercury. Gemini has Libra, so Venus. Cancer has Scorpio, so Mars. Leo has Sagittarius, so Jupiter. Virgo has Capricorn, so Saturn. Libra has Aquarius, also Saturn. Scorpio has Pisces, so Jupiter. Sagittarius has Aries, so Mars. Capricorn has Taurus, so Venus. Aquarius has Gemini, so Mercury. Pisces has Cancer, so the Moon.
If that planet sits in your 10th house, this page is your placement. The kundali calculator gives the ascendant and every house position from the Swiss Ephemeris.
Where Raja Yoga actually forms
Raja Yoga arises from association between a kendra lord and a trikona lord. The kendra supplies power and the trikona supplies grace, and the combination is what the yoga names. Association means conjunction, mutual aspect, exchange of houses, or a single planet holding both rulerships.
That last case is the yogakaraka, and the word means exactly what it says: the producer of the yoga. A planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona carries the Raja Yoga condition within itself, without needing a second planet to associate with.
Three ascendants have a yogakaraka as their 5th lord. For Cancer and Capricorn the two houses are the 5th and the 10th, so a 5th lord placed in the 10th is sitting in the other house it rules, which is the most concentrated form the arrangement takes. For Libra the yogakaraka rules the 4th and 5th, so the condition is satisfied and the planet is visiting rather than at home.
Two qualifications that matter more than the label. A yogakaraka in poor dignity delivers considerably less than a well placed ordinary lord, as the debilitated cases elsewhere in this series show. And a yoga that never runs during a favourable dasha delivers nothing at all, which is why the timing section is not an afterthought.
For the other nine ascendants this remains a good placement and the Raja Yoga language does not apply, unless their 5th and 10th lords associate by some other route.
The placement itself
The first thing this placement does is make the aptitude the occupation. These natives are doing for a living the thing they would have been good at anyway, which is more unusual than it sounds and accounts for a great deal of their effectiveness.
The second is that judgement is performed publicly. The 5th’s discrimination placed in the most visible house means these natives are known for their views, and the views are on record. That raises the cost of being wrong and generally improves the quality.
The third is that creative output is the reputation. Where the 5th lord in the 1st makes work identity, this makes it standing: what these natives have produced is what their name means to other people.
The fourth is that authority arrives early. The combination of visible faculty and visible position means these natives are given responsibility ahead of their years, and generally handle it.
The fifth is the upachaya schedule. The 10th improves with time, so this configuration compounds: each piece of work raises the standing that makes the next one possible.
All twelve ascendants
The 5th lord is a different planet for every ascendant and lands in a different sign here. Every row below is computed rather than quoted. The Sun and Mars both take their directional strength in the 10th, and the yogakaraka column reflects lordship of both a kendra and a trikona.
| Ascendant | 5th sign | 5th lord | Sits in | Dignity | Digbala | Yogakaraka | Also rules |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Leo | Sun | Capricorn | neutral | yes | no | only the 5th |
| Taurus | Virgo | Mercury | Aquarius | neutral | no | no | 2nd |
| Gemini | Libra | Venus | Pisces | exalted | no | no | 12th |
| Cancer | Scorpio | Mars | Aries | own sign, moolatrikona | yes | yes | 10th |
| Leo | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Taurus | neutral | no | no | 8th |
| Virgo | Capricorn | Saturn | Gemini | neutral | no | no | 6th |
| Libra | Aquarius | Saturn | Cancer | neutral | no | yes | 4th |
| Scorpio | Pisces | Jupiter | Leo | neutral | no | no | 2nd |
| Sagittarius | Aries | Mars | Virgo | neutral | yes | no | 12th |
| Capricorn | Taurus | Venus | Libra | own sign, moolatrikona | no | yes | 10th |
| Aquarius | Gemini | Mercury | Scorpio | neutral | no | no | 8th |
| Pisces | Cancer | Moon | Sagittarius | neutral | no | no | only the 5th |
Cancer ascendant is the strongest cell the 5th lord produces anywhere in the chart. Mars sits in Aries, its own sign and moolatrikona, gains directional strength since the 10th is Mars’s own quarter, and is Cancer’s yogakaraka ruling the 5th and the 10th. Four separate advantages on one planet, in one of the two houses it rules, with the Raja Yoga condition satisfied within it.
What that produces is a native whose creative and professional lives are the same project, pursued with force, and recognised. Mars supplies the execution the 5th does not, which addresses the standard weakness of this lord. For a Cancer native, this planet’s periods will be the defining stretches of the life.
Capricorn ascendant carries the same lordship structure. Venus rules the 5th and the 10th and sits in Libra, its own sign and moolatrikona, which is the 10th house itself. Three advantages rather than four, and Venus’s character rather than Mars’s: the professional expression is aesthetic, relational and persuasive where Cancer’s is forceful.
Gemini ascendant is the exaltation. Venus is exalted in Pisces, which is the 10th from Gemini, producing a career built on taste and refinement. Venus also rules the 12th here, which gives the work a private or otherworldly quality.
Libra also has a yogakaraka 5th lord, Saturn ruling the 4th and 5th, neutral in Cancer. The Raja Yoga condition is satisfied by lordship even though the planet is neither dignified nor at home.
Aries and Sagittarius gain directional strength without sign dignity. The Sun for Aries and Mars for Sagittarius both operate at full effect in the 10th, invisible to a dignity-only reading. For Aries the Sun rules only the 5th, so the creative authority is undivided and at full directional force, which is a cleaner configuration than the table suggests.
No ascendant lands debilitated here, one of only three positions in this series where that holds.
Aries and Pisces carry no second lordship. Taurus and Scorpio carry the 2nd, Leo and Aquarius the 8th, Gemini and Sagittarius the 12th, and Virgo the 6th.
Children and career
The 5th governs children and the 10th the profession, so this placement puts them in direct competition for the same hours.
The commonest pattern is a native whose working life and whose children are both central and who is continually adjudicating between them. Unlike placements where one absorbs the other, this one keeps both live, and the adjudication does not resolve.
A second pattern is children being brought into the professional world: the family business, the child who follows the same field, the work that is visibly explained to them.
Two qualifications. This placement does not indicate whether a person will have children, which no single placement establishes and which is a medical question where it is a question at all. And it does not adjudicate anybody’s choices about balancing work and family, which is not what a chart is for.
Where it strains
The work is always being assessed. Creative output in the most visible house is output with an audience attached at every stage. These natives lose the ability to make something badly in private, which is where most good work begins.
Being wrong is expensive. Judgement on public record raises the cost of revision, so these natives defend positions longer than the evidence warrants. The mechanism is reputational rather than intellectual and it operates without their noticing.
The aptitude gets professionalised out of enjoyment. Doing for a living the thing you were naturally good at is a genuine advantage and it removes the thing as a refuge. When the work goes badly there is nowhere else to go.
Early authority outruns experience. Responsibility arriving ahead of one’s years is generally handled, and it means these natives make consequential decisions before they have seen enough to make them well. The confidence is real and the sample is small.
Career and work
The natural fit is work where the native’s judgement is the visible product. Consulting and advisory practice at a senior level, creative direction, editorial leadership, architecture and design, teaching and academic work, law, and any profession where a considered view carries a name attached to it.
Creative industries suit this placement structurally, with the qualification that it supplies the faculty and the standing rather than the craft or the output volume. Where the 3rd house is also strong these natives produce a great deal; where it is not, they direct.
Independent practice generally works better than institutional employment, since the placement connects the faculty directly to the standing without an intermediary.
The second lordship shapes direction. Cancer and Capricorn have the 10th doubled with yogakaraka status, the strongest professional configuration in this series and one where the career and the aptitude are structurally the same thing. Taurus and Scorpio have the 2nd, connecting standing to earning. Leo and Aquarius have the 8th, pointing at research-led professional work. Gemini and Sagittarius have the 12th, which frequently means a career conducted abroad or in a specialist enclave.
Health
This placement links the 5th’s regions, the stomach and upper abdomen, with the 10th’s, the knees and joints.
The practical content is ordinary. Persistent digestive trouble belongs with a doctor rather than a chart, and knee and joint complaints warrant attention rather than tolerance. This site does not predict illness or longevity from placements.
The observation worth having is about visibility rather than anatomy. With the 5th governing both the discriminating mind and the stomach, and the lord placed in the most exposed house, these natives register professional pressure digestively and continuously, because the pressure is continuous. There is no off-stage. Recognising that pattern saves a good deal of misdirected investigation, though anything persistent still belongs with a clinician.
When it activates
These themes come forward during the 5th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with the mahadasha carrying the weight. The 10th’s upachaya character means later periods deliver more than early ones.
For Cancer, Libra and Capricorn the 5th lord is the yogakaraka, so these periods are the most consequential in the chart. For Cancer and Capricorn they are also unusually well supported, since the planet is in its own sign and moolatrikona in a house it rules, and for Cancer with directional strength on top. Identifying those periods in advance is worth more than most predictions.
The strongest windows come when the 5th lord runs alongside the 11th lord, which converts standing into gains, or the 9th lord for the dharma trine. For Cancer and Capricorn the 5th and 10th lords are the same planet, so its periods carry the faculty and the profession together, which concentrates the timing considerably.
Jupiter transiting the natal 5th lord or the 10th house tends to bring professional advancement and creative openings together. Saturn over the same points restructures the working life, which slows the output and generally raises its standard.
The KP layer
Krishnamurti Paddhati adds timing precision through the sub-lord, stated here as a separate layer rather than mixed into the Parashari reading above.
KP uses neither Raja Yoga nor yogakaraka status, both being Parashari concepts, so a reader working across the two systems should not expect them to agree on what matters here. In KP promotion and professional change are read through the 10th cusp sub-lord signifying the 2nd, 6th, 10th and 11th, and creative output and children through the 5th. A strong 5th lord in the 10th with an unsupported 11th connection is the standard configuration behind recognition arriving without reward. The sub-lord reference tables and the sub-lord theory guide cover the mechanics.
Common misreadings
Raja Yoga applies here for three ascendants and not for the rest. Cancer, Libra and Capricorn have a yogakaraka 5th lord, which satisfies the kendra and trikona condition within one planet. For the other nine this is a good placement and the label does not apply.
A yoga is not a guarantee. It indicates a structural feature that activates during specific periods. A yogakaraka in poor dignity delivers less than a well placed ordinary lord, and a yoga whose dasha never runs delivers nothing.
Recognition is not income. The 10th gives standing. Whether it converts into retained money is a 2nd and 11th house question, and in KP an 11th cusp one.
The dignity column understates a third of this page. Three ascendants gain directional strength and three carry yogakaraka status, several with neutral dignity. A reading based on exaltation and own sign alone would miss most of what is here.
Questions people ask
Is the 5th lord in the 10th house good?
It is the strongest position in this series. No ascendant lands debilitated, the placement aligns aptitude with occupation more closely than most charts manage, and the 10th’s upachaya character means it compounds over time. The main strain is that the work is always being assessed, so the private space where most good work begins is not available.
Which ascendant has the strongest version?
Cancer, and it is the best cell this lord produces anywhere. Mars is in Aries, its own sign and moolatrikona, gains directional strength in the 10th, and is Cancer’s yogakaraka ruling the 5th and 10th. Four advantages on one planet in a house it rules.
Is this a Raja Yoga?
For Cancer, Libra and Capricorn ascendants, yes. Their 5th lord is a yogakaraka, meaning one planet holds both a kendra and a trikona, which satisfies the Raja Yoga condition without needing a second planet. For the other nine ascendants it is a favourable placement and the label does not apply.
Why do I defend positions I no longer believe?
Because your judgement sits in the house of public record, so revising a view costs standing rather than merely costing effort. The mechanism is reputational and it operates without your noticing, which is precisely why naming it helps.
Why is my work never enjoyable any more?
Because the thing you were naturally good at became the thing you are paid and assessed for, so it stopped being available as a refuge. That is the cost attached to an otherwise excellent alignment, and it is worth deliberately keeping some practice that carries no professional stake.
Does this mean career will come before children?
It means both will be central and you will be adjudicating between them continuously rather than resolving the question once. This placement does not indicate whether a person has children, and it certainly does not adjudicate anybody’s choices about how to balance the two.
When will this placement give results?
During the 5th lord’s mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha, with later periods delivering more given the 10th’s upachaya character. If you are Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, the 5th lord is your yogakaraka and those periods are the most consequential in your chart, which makes identifying them in advance genuinely useful.
Want this read in your own chart?
If your 5th lord is a yogakaraka, its condition and its dasha periods matter more than any other single factor in your chart, and both are worth establishing precisely. Beyond that: the exact degree, anything conjoined or aspecting it, the second house it rules, and which period you are running.
