The Moon in Relationships: What You Need to Feel Safe, and What Your Partner Needs

Venus is how a native loves, and the Moon is what they need in order to feel safe while loving, and most of what two people who love each other cannot explain to each other lives in the second. A man with Venus in Leo gives warmth and display and needs, by his Moon in Cancer, to be held and fed and let alone in his moods; a woman with Venus in Gemini gives conversation and needs, by her Moon in Capricorn, to be able to rely on him absolutely; each gives what their Venus gives and waits for what their Moon needs, and neither has been told that the two are different planets. The chart reads the Moon for relationships in the four layers every planet page in this cluster uses. The house the Moon rules for the ascendant, one house for each, which decides what the Moon’s period brings: the partner for Capricorn, the romance for Pisces, the home for Aries. The sign, which is the need itself: to be felt in the water signs, to be safe in earth, to be admired and left free in fire, to be talked to in air. The house, which is where the need is met and by whom. And the condition, exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio, with Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or Mars, waxing or dark, which decides how easily the need is felt and said. This article gives the four layers, Moon-to-Moon compatibility, which is what the classical matching was measuring all along, the Moon period’s seasons of the heart, and a pair of charts whose Moons were four signs apart.

It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. The Moon’s whole profile is on the Moon page, its period on the Moon mahadasha page, and its part in a native’s steadiness in the Moon and emotional resilience; how a native loves, which the Moon’s need sits underneath, is the earlier planet page, Venus and Relationships.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha; the Moon as the significator of the heart, the need and the feeling of home in every chart, taken in the order lordship, sign, house, condition; the waxing and waning Moon by its distance from the Sun, and the dark Moon within about twelve degrees of it. Emotional need is read as a description of what a native’s Moon asks for, never as a diagnosis of anyone; a heart that is in real trouble is for a counsellor, and the chart’s contribution is the sentence about what it needs. Nothing here is a remedy for the Moon.

What you need to feel safe, what your partner needs, and where the two go past each other.

A relationship consultation reads the house your Moon rules and what its period brings, the sign that is your emotional need and the one your partner's Moon speaks, the house where the need is met and the condition that decides how easily it is felt and said, and lays the two Moons side by side for the compatibility the classical matching was measuring.

The need and the love: the Moon against Venus

The distinction this page rests on is the one most readers have never been given: Venus is the loving and the Moon is the needing, and they are different planets in different signs in almost every chart. Venus is what the native gives and is drawn to, the style and the pleasure of it; the Moon is what the native must have from a relationship in order to be at ease inside it, the condition under which the loving can happen at all. A native whose Venus is warm and whose Moon is afraid loves freely and cannot rest; a native whose Venus is cool and whose Moon is steady loves quietly and is at home. The reading of the Moon for relationships is therefore a reading of the condition: what must be true for this person to feel safe with someone, and what happens when it is not, since an unmet Moon does not stop loving, it starts guarding. The Moon is also the mind as the classical texts have it, the manas, and the mood, the daily weather of the heart, which its transit gives; and it is the mother, the fourth house’s planet, so that what a native needs from a partner is often, plainly, what the Moon’s sign describes them as having needed from home. The reading says all of that in a sentence or two, and the sentence is the one couples most often repeat back.

The first layer: the house the Moon rules for your ascendant

The Moon rules Cancer alone, so for each ascendant it owns one house, and that house decides what the Moon’s period brings and what the Moon’s need is attached to. For Capricorn the Moon rules the seventh, and the need is the partner: the Moon’s period marries, and the native cannot feel safe without a bond. For Pisces it rules the fifth, and the need is the romance and the child; for Aries the fourth, the home and the mother; for Cancer the first, the self, and the Cancer native’s need is their own; for Gemini the second, the family and the table; for Taurus the third, the siblings and the words; for Virgo the eleventh, the friends; for Libra the tenth, the standing; for Scorpio the ninth, the tradition and the far; for Sagittarius the eighth, the depth and the crisis; for Aquarius the sixth, the work and the service; for Leo the twelfth, the private and the far. The cluster’s rule applies: a planet’s period gives by lordship first, so that the Moon’s ten years bring a partner to Capricorn, a romance to Pisces, a home to Aries, and, for Leo, ten years in which the heart lives somewhere private or abroad, with the Moon’s own nature, the need for safety, laid over all of it. The table gives the twelve, and a Leo native told that the Moon period is a time of emotional fulfilment has been read without the first layer, since for Leo it is the twelfth lord’s period and the fulfilment, if it comes, is far away or out of sight.

Twelve ascendants: the Moon’s house and its period’s gift

AscendantThe Moon rulesWhat the Moon period brings, and what the heart is attached to
AriesThe 4thThe home and the mother; the need is to belong somewhere, and the period settles the heart at home
TaurusThe 3rdSiblings, words and short journeys; the need is to be spoken to, and the period is talkative and restless
GeminiThe 2ndThe family and the table; the need is to be fed and included, and the period builds the household
CancerThe 1stThe self; the need is the native’s own and changes with the Moon, and the period is the native’s own heart, whole
LeoThe 12thThe private and the far; the need is kept out of sight, and the period’s heart lives abroad or in solitude
VirgoThe 11thFriends and the wish; the need is the circle, and the period gains through it, the friend who becomes the partner
LibraThe 10thStanding and work; the need is to be seen and respected, and the period’s heart is in the public life
ScorpioThe 9thThe tradition and the far; the need is to believe in the partner, and the period brings the far one
SagittariusThe 8thDepth and crisis; the need is intensity and secrecy, and the period transforms the heart
CapricornThe 7thThe partner; the need is the bond itself, and the period marries or remakes the marriage
AquariusThe 6thWork and service; the need is to be useful, and the period’s heart is in the daily labour, tested
PiscesThe 5thRomance and the child; the need is to be adored, and the period brings the love and the children

One house each; for Capricorn and Pisces the Moon’s own house is a relationship house and its period is a relationship period, and for the other ten the Moon’s need attaches to something else and the partner is asked to supply it.

The second layer: the sign as the need itself

The sign the Moon occupies is the need, what the native must have in order to feel safe with someone, and it is the layer that explains the sentence “you don’t understand what I need” in almost every couple. The Moon in the water signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, needs to be felt: to have the mood noticed, the silence read, the feeling shared before it is discussed, and it is hurt by a partner who solves instead of feeling. The Moon in the earth signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, needs to be safe: reliability, routine, the promise kept, the partner who is where they said they would be, and it is hurt by surprise more than by neglect. The Moon in the fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, needs to be admired and left free: enthusiasm, warmth, the partner who is glad to see them and does not fence them, and it is hurt by being managed. The Moon in the air signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, needs to be talked to: conversation, fairness, the feeling explained and understood, and it is hurt by silence and by being told to just feel. A couple whose Moons are in water and air has one who needs to be felt and one who needs to be told, and each gives the other what they themselves need, which is the mismatch section’s subject. The twelve Moon-sign pages give each need in full; what this page adds is the naming of it as a need rather than a trait, since “you are sensitive” is a description and “you need your mood noticed before it is discussed” is an instruction a partner can follow.

Exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio, at home in Cancer

The Moon exalted in Taurus is the steady heart: it needs safety and finds it easily, it is not easily thrown, and its natives are the partners who are the calm in the house, whose need is met by ordinary reliability and who therefore give the sense of home to everyone else; the risk is the steadiness that will not move when it should. The Moon in its own sign, Cancer, is the full heart, needing to be felt and feeling everything, the partner who nourishes and who needs to be nourished in turn, with moods that come and go like the tide and are not to be argued with. The Moon debilitated in Scorpio is the heart that needs most and trusts least: intensity, depth, the total bond, and underneath it the fear that the bond will be taken, so that the Scorpio Moon tests the partner, withholds, and is wounded by what a Taurus Moon would not notice; its natives love with a completeness other Moons do not have, and need a partner who does not flinch. The debility is cancelled, in the classical way, by Mars in a kendra or by the Moon in a kendra from the lagna, and the cancelled Scorpio Moon is the heart that learned to trust by surviving what it feared, and is the deepest of the twelve when it has. The reading names the dignity as the depth and the sign as the need, and tells a partner of a Scorpio Moon what a partner of a Taurus Moon never needs to hear: that the testing is the need showing, and that meeting it once is worth a year of reassurance.

The third layer: the house where the need is met

The house the Moon occupies is where the need is met, and by whom. The Moon in the seventh, in the Moon in the seventh, needs the partner in order to feel whole, and gives the native who is at home only in a bond; in the fourth, in the Moon in the fourth, the need is met at home and by the mother’s kind of care, and the partner is asked to be a home; in the fifth, in the Moon in the fifth, the need is met in romance and play and the children, and the partner is asked to keep the romance alive; in the first, in the Moon in the first, the need is the native’s own and visible to everyone, the person whose face shows the mood. Three placements make the need harder to meet: the Moon in the sixth, in the Moon in the sixth, needs to be useful and is met in service and daily work, the partner who is cared for rather than loved outright; in the eighth, in the Moon in the eighth, the need is intense and secret and met only in crisis or depth, the partner who is trusted with the hidden; in the twelfth, in the Moon in the twelfth, the need is private and often unmet, the heart that keeps its own counsel and is met, when it is, far from home or in solitude. The house also says where the native goes when the need is not met, which is the useful part: the seventh-house Moon goes to the partner and the twelfth-house Moon goes away, and a partner who knows which has been given the map of the bad weeks.

The fourth layer: the Moon in company, waxing, waning and dark

The Moon’s condition decides how easily the need is felt by the native and said to the partner. The Moon with Saturn, in the Moon with Saturn, is the withheld heart: the need is there and is not said, the native who does not ask and is not given, and whose partner is told, plainly, that the silence is the need and not its absence. The Moon with Rahu, in the Moon with Rahu, is the restless heart, the need that changes shape and is never quite met, and the partner who is asked for something different each month. The Moon with Ketu, in the Moon with Ketu, is the detached heart, the need that is not felt as a need, and the partner who wonders whether they are needed at all. The Moon with Mars, in the Moon with Mars, is the heated heart, the need that becomes a fight when unmet and a protectiveness when met, the Chandra-Mangal that the yoga page reads for its other meaning. The Moon with the Sun, in the Sun with the Moon, the dark Moon within about twelve degrees, is the heart the native cannot see, the need that is real and unknown to its owner, so that the partner knows it first. The waxing Moon feels its need and says it; the waning Moon feels it and doubts it. The condition is the layer a partner needs most and the native can least supply, and a reading that gives a couple the sentence “her Moon is with Saturn, she will not ask, ask her” has done what the four layers are for.

Moon to Moon: the compatibility the classical matching measures

The classical kundali matching, the ashtakoota with its thirty-six points, is built almost entirely on the two Moons: their signs for Bhakoot and Graha Maitri, their nakshatras for Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi, and it is read in full on this site in the complete ashtakoota guide. What the matching measures, underneath its points, is whether two hearts’ needs are compatible, and the reading of two Moons for relationships is that measurement made plain. The two Moons in the same sign or element never have to explain their needs; the Moons in complementary elements, water with earth, fire with air, meet each other’s needs without trying, since the earth Moon’s reliability is what the water Moon needs to feel safe and the water Moon’s feeling is what the earth Moon needs to feel alive; the Moons in the crossed elements, water with air, earth with fire, each give what they themselves need and miss what the other does, which is the mismatch. The Bhakoot rule, the two Moon signs six and eight apart or two and twelve apart, is the classical name for the crossed needs, read in the Bhakoot dosha guide, and its exceptions are the cases where the crossed Moons share a lord or a friendship, read in the Graha Maitri koota. The reading of two Moons is the one part of matching that a love couple should have done even if they have done nothing else, because it names the need each will have to learn to supply, and a couple who know it are ahead of most.

The mismatch: one needs to talk, the other needs quiet

The commonest shape of a couple in trouble who still love each other is a mismatch of Moons, and it has three forms. The water Moon with the air Moon: one needs to be felt and the other to be told, so that when the water Moon is hurt the air Moon explains, and when the air Moon is hurt the water Moon holds, and each is giving the wrong thing with the right intention. The earth Moon with the fire Moon: one needs safety and the other freedom, so that the earth Moon’s reliability reads to the fire Moon as fencing and the fire Moon’s enthusiasm reads to the earth Moon as unreliability, and each feels unloved by the other’s best quality. The steady Moon with the Scorpio Moon: one needs little and the other everything, so that the Taurus Moon’s calm reads to the Scorpio Moon as not caring and the Scorpio Moon’s testing reads to the Taurus Moon as an accusation. The reading of a mismatch is not that the couple are incompatible, which is what the points say; it is the two sentences, what each needs and in what form, and the instruction that follows from them, which is to give the other what their Moon needs rather than what one’s own would want. Couples do this once they have the sentences, and most of the mismatched Moons in long marriages are couples who worked it out without the chart, slowly; the chart’s use is to make it fast.

The Moon period and the Moon’s transit: seasons of the heart

The Moon’s major period is ten years, and it brings the house the Moon rules for the ascendant, the partner for Capricorn and the romance for Pisces and the home for Aries, with the Moon’s need running through all of it: ten years in which the heart is the theme, in which the native feels more, needs more and is more easily hurt, and in which relationships are made and broken on whether the need is met. Its sub-periods run through every planet, Moon-Moon, in the Moon-Moon page, being the opening ten months of the full heart; Moon-Saturn the withheld year and a half, Moon-Rahu the restless one, Moon-Venus the year in which the need and the love coincide and a relationship is made, Moon-Ketu the detachment. The Moon’s sub-periods inside other major periods are the seasons of the heart, ten to twenty months, in which the need is loudest and the native most in need of the partner’s reading of it. And the Moon’s transit, two and a half days in each sign, is the daily weather: the Moon over the native’s own Moon sign is the day the native is most themselves, over the twelfth from it the low day, over the eighth the day of the sudden feeling; it is too fine to time a relationship by and exactly fine enough to time a conversation by, and a couple who know each other’s Moon signs can read each other’s weather from the calendar, which is the smallest and most used thing this page offers.

A worked pair: Moons four signs apart

Her chart: Taurus lagna, particulars altered. The Moon, lord of the third, sits in Scorpio in the seventh, debilitated: the need is the partner, since the Moon occupies the bond’s house, and the need is Scorpio’s, intensity, depth, the total bond, and underneath it the fear of losing it; Mars, the seventh and twelfth lord, sits in Cancer in the third, debilitated, so the debility is not cancelled by Mars in a kendra, and the Moon is in a kendra from the lagna, the seventh, which cancels it by the other rule, the heart that learned to trust by surviving. Venus, the lagna lord, sits in Gemini in the second: the loving is conversational and light, the giving is words and company. The Sun, lord of the fourth, in Gemini with Venus; Mercury, lord of the second and fifth, in Taurus in the lagna; Jupiter, lord of the eighth and eleventh, in Virgo in the fifth; Saturn, lord of the ninth and tenth, in Aquarius in the tenth, its own sign; Rahu in Leo in the fourth, Ketu in Aquarius in the tenth with Saturn. Four layers: the Moon rules the third for Taurus, so its period brings words and restlessness and the heart attached to being spoken to; the sign is Scorpio, the need for depth and the fear; the house is the seventh, the need met only in the bond; the condition is debilitated, cancelled by the kendra, waning, and unafflicted by conjunction, though Saturn aspects it from the tenth, the tenth aspect from Saturn falling on the seventh, so that the need is withheld as well as intense.

His chart: Aquarius lagna. The Moon, lord of the sixth, sits in Cancer in the sixth, its own sign: the need is to be useful and to nourish, met in service and daily care, the man who shows love by doing. Venus, lord of the fourth and ninth, in Pisces in the second, exalted: the loving is devotion, complete. Their Moons, Scorpio and Cancer, are four signs apart, both water, the same element: she needs to be felt and he feels; he needs to be useful and she, in the seventh-house Moon’s way, needs the partner to be there, which is a form of usefulness. The mismatch was not the element but the depth: her Scorpio Moon tested and withheld, Saturn’s aspect adding the silence, and his Cancer Moon in the sixth read the testing as a task he was failing, and worked harder, which is what a sixth-house Moon does, and the harder he worked the less she believed it, which is what a Scorpio Moon does. The reading, given four years into the marriage, was the two sentences and the instruction. Hers: the need is depth and the fear is loss, and the testing is the need showing; what meets it is not more doing but one plain answer to the question she never asks. His: the need is to be useful and the doing is the love; what meets it is being told the doing was seen. And then the Moon-to-Moon sentence, that two water Moons four signs apart, a trine, are the classical good match, Bhakoot clean, and that the trouble had been Saturn’s aspect on her Moon and the sixth house on his, the withheld and the overworked, not the hearts. They are the couple whose Moons were compatible and whose conditions were not, and a reading that had stopped at the thirty-six points would have said thirty and sent them away with the sum.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Moon represent in relationships?

What a native needs in order to feel safe with someone, which is not the same as how they love: Venus is the loving and the Moon is the needing, and they are different planets in different signs in almost every chart. The Moon is also the mind and the mood, the daily weather of the heart, and the mother, so that what a native needs from a partner is often what the Moon’s sign describes them as having needed from home. An unmet Moon does not stop loving; it starts guarding.

How is the Moon read for relationships?

By four layers taken in turn: the house the Moon rules for the ascendant, one house each, which fixes what its period delivers, the partner for Capricorn and the romance for Pisces; the sign, which is the need itself, to be felt in water, safe in earth, admired and free in fire, talked to in air; the house, where the need is met and by whom; and the condition, exalted or debilitated, with Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, Mars or the Sun, waxing, waning or dark, which decides how easily the need is felt and said.

Which Moon signs are compatible in love?

Moons in the same sign or element never have to explain their needs; Moons in complementary elements, water with earth and fire with air, meet each other’s needs without trying, the earth Moon’s reliability being what the water Moon needs and the water Moon’s feeling being what the earth Moon needs; Moons in the crossed elements, water with air and earth with fire, each give what they themselves need and miss what the other does. The classical Bhakoot rule names the crossed Moon signs, and its exceptions are the cases where the crossed Moons share a lord or a friendship.

What does a debilitated Moon mean for love and marriage?

The Moon in Scorpio needs most and trusts least: intensity, depth and the total bond, with the fear of losing it underneath, so that it tests the partner and withholds, and is wounded by what a Taurus Moon would not notice. It loves with a completeness other Moons do not have and needs a partner who does not flinch. The debility is cancelled by Mars in a kendra or by the Moon in a kendra from the lagna, and the cancelled Scorpio Moon is the heart that learned to trust by surviving what it feared.

What does the Moon mahadasha bring for relationships?

Ten years of the house the Moon rules for the ascendant, the partner for Capricorn, the romance and the child for Pisces, the home for Aries, the private or far for Leo, with the Moon’s need running through all of it: a decade in which the heart is the theme, the native feels and needs more and is more easily hurt, and relationships are made and broken on whether the need is met. Moon-Venus is the sub-period in which need and love coincide and a relationship is made; Moon-Saturn the withheld one; Moon-Rahu the restless one.

What does the Moon with Saturn mean in relationships?

The withheld heart: the need is there and is not said, the native who does not ask and is not given, and whose partner mistakes the silence for the absence of need. The sentence for that partner is that the silence is the need showing, and to ask; the Saturn Moon answers when asked and almost never volunteers. With Rahu the need changes shape and is never quite met, with Ketu it is not felt as a need, with Mars it becomes a fight when unmet, and with the Sun, the dark Moon, the native cannot see their own need and the partner knows it first.

Can the Moon’s transit be used for relationships?

Not to time a relationship, since two and a half days in a sign is too fine, but exactly to time a conversation: the Moon over a native’s own Moon sign is the day they are most themselves, over the twelfth from it the low day, over the eighth the day of the sudden feeling. A couple who know each other’s Moon signs can read each other’s weather from the calendar, and choose the day for the conversation that matters, which is the smallest and most used thing the Moon offers a relationship.

Two Moons, two needs, and the sentence each partner can actually follow.

A relationship consultation reads your Moon in four layers, the house it rules, the sign that is your need, the house where it is met and the condition that decides whether it gets said, then lays your partner's Moon beside it for the compatibility the classical matching measures and the mismatch it misses, and gives each of you the sentence about the other that a reading is for.
