The question is asked as love or arranged, and the chart answers it as a relation between two houses. The fifth is where romance lives, the feeling, the pleasure and the choice; the seventh is where the bond is made, the partnership, the commitment, the marriage as an institution. A love marriage is the two joined: the fifth lord and the seventh lord in connection, by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange; or Venus, Mars or Rahu standing on one of the two houses; or the Navamsa repeating the connection. An arranged marriage is a seventh that works without the fifth, the bond formed through the family houses, the fourth and the ninth, rather than through the romance. And the commonest case, the love-cum-arranged marriage in which the couple chose and the families agreed, is both at once. This article reads the join, the ten signatures that make it and the two that deny it, the partner each signature describes, the timing when the fifth and seventh lords’ periods meet, and what the family’s consent looks like in a chart.
It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. Whether marriage is promised at all is the marriage cluster’s question, in Is Marriage Promised in My Chart?; whether the particular person will be the spouse is the next page, Will I Marry the Person I Love?; and the KP reading of love against arranged, through the fifth and seventh cusp sub-lords, is a separate instrument in love versus arranged marriage in KP.
Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha, the fifth house as romance and the seventh as the bond, the fourth and ninth as the family’s houses, the D9 Navamsa as the marriage chart. Love and arranged are read as the fifth joined to the seventh or not, without any view on which is better, and the caste, community and religion of a partner are read only as the family’s reaction in the fourth and ninth. Nothing here is a remedy to bring a marriage about.

Love, arranged, or both: which does your chart carry, and when?
A relationship consultation reads the fifth-seventh connection in your chart and your Navamsa, names the signature and the partner it describes, tests it against the denials, and marks the period in which the fifth and seventh lords meet, with the family's consent read from the fourth and ninth.

The two houses, and why the join is the whole reading
A chart can have a strong fifth and a strong seventh and no love marriage, because the two are separate: the romance is lived and the marriage is arranged, and the native is the person who had a great love at twenty-two and a good marriage at twenty-eight to someone else. A chart can have a modest fifth and a modest seventh and a love marriage, because the two are joined: the little romance the fifth allows is the one the seventh marries. The join is therefore the whole reading, and the strength of either house is the second question. The fifth lord’s twelve placements and the seventh lord’s twelve placements are read first for the join, which is to say for the two placements in which each lord sits in the other’s house, and only then for the rest. A reader who takes one thing from this page should take that: look for the connection before the strength, because a love marriage is a connection and not a quantity.
The lords in connection: conjunction, aspect, exchange
The fifth lord and the seventh lord conjunct, in any house, is the plainest join: romance and bond in one place, and the marriage that comes out of a relationship. The two in mutual aspect, opposite each other or Mars, Jupiter or Saturn throwing their special aspects across, is the join at a distance, love and marriage that take longer to find each other and do. The exchange, the fifth lord in the seventh and the seventh lord in the fifth, is the strongest form, since each house then holds the other’s ruler and neither can act without the other; it is the Parivartana of love marriage, and in charts that carry it the marriage is a love marriage in almost every case, read in the fifth lord in the seventh and the seventh lord in the fifth. Either lord alone in the other’s house, without the exchange, is the join in one direction: the fifth lord in the seventh gives the romance that becomes the marriage, and the seventh lord in the fifth gives the spouse met through the romance, the partner who was first a lover. When the two lords are one planet, which happens for no ascendant in the whole-sign scheme since the fifth and seventh are never ruled by the same planet, the join has to come from occupation, which is the next section.
Venus, Mars and Rahu on the fifth or seventh
Venus is the significator of love and of marriage both, and Venus in the fifth or Venus in the seventh is the planet of one house standing in the other’s business, the romance in the house of the bond or the bond’s planet in the house of romance; either is a love-marriage indicator on its own, and both together, which cannot happen, would be the strongest. Mars on the fifth or seventh gives the desire that insists, the passionate choice, the marriage made against advice, and Mars in the fifth is the placement of the native who chose early and chose hard. Rahu on the fifth or seventh gives the unconventional choice, the partner from another community, religion, country or generation, the love that the family did not expect, and Rahu in the seventh is the placement most often behind the marriage the relatives talked about; its shadow is that Rahu’s choice can be an appetite, and the reading checks the dispositor. The Moon in the fifth gives the emotional choice and the love that feels like home, in the Moon in the fifth. Jupiter on the seventh, by contrast, is the arranged signature: the bond made through elders, teachers and the family’s judgment, the marriage that is sanctioned, in Jupiter in the seventh, and Saturn on the seventh the bond made late and by duty.
Ten signatures: love, arranged, and both
| Signature | Reads as | The marriage it gives |
|---|---|---|
| 5th and 7th lords in each other’s houses | The strongest join: romance and bond exchange rulers | Love marriage, almost always |
| 5th and 7th lords conjunct | Romance and bond in one place | Love marriage |
| 5th lord in the 7th, or 7th lord in the 5th | The join in one direction | Love marriage, or the spouse met as a lover |
| 5th and 7th lords in mutual aspect | The join at a distance | Love marriage after a long courtship |
| Venus in the 5th or 7th | The love significator on the bond, or the bond’s on the romance | Love marriage, often with the families’ consent |
| Rahu in the 5th or 7th | The unconventional choice | Love marriage outside the community, religion or country |
| Mars in the 5th or 7th | The desire that insists | Love marriage made against advice, sometimes in haste |
| 7th lord with the 4th or 9th lord, Jupiter on the 7th, 5th quiet | The bond through the family houses | Arranged marriage |
| Join present and 7th lord also with the 4th or 9th lord | Both at once | Love-cum-arranged: the couple chose and the families agreed |
| Join present but through the 6th, 8th or 12th | The romance that cannot become the bond | Love without marriage, or marriage after a break |
One signature from the first seven rows gives a love marriage as a tendency; two make it likely; and the eighth row alone, with the fifth quiet, is the arranged chart, which is not a lesser chart and is a different one.
The partner each signature describes
The signature says more than love or arranged; it says who. The fifth lord in the seventh gives the spouse who was a lover first, met young or met through pleasure, the arts, a friend’s circle, a college. The seventh lord in the fifth gives the spouse who is also the romance, the marriage that stays a love affair, and often a spouse connected to children, teaching or the creative. Venus on either gives the spouse chosen for beauty, comfort and ease, and a marriage in which the pleasure lasts. Mars gives the spouse chosen for force, the partner who is a match rather than a complement, and a marriage with heat in it. Rahu gives the spouse from outside, the other community, the other country, the older or younger partner, the one the family did not expect, and a marriage that is unconventional in its arrangements as well as its origin. The Moon gives the spouse who feels like home. And Jupiter on the seventh, the arranged signature, gives the spouse of standing, chosen by judgment, and a marriage that is a household before it is a romance. The general reading of the spouse’s nature is in the spouse prediction guide; this page reads only the part of it that the love-marriage signature carries.
The denial: the join through the sixth, eighth or twelfth
The join can be present and still not produce a marriage, and the reason is always the same: the connection is made in or through a dusthana. The fifth and seventh lords conjunct in the twelfth is the love that ends in departure, the partner abroad, the relationship that dissolves before the wedding; in the eighth, the love that is broken by a crisis and sometimes returns as a second attempt; in the sixth, the love that becomes a dispute, with the two families or between the two people. The fifth lord in the seventh with the twelfth lord beside it, or Ketu on the seventh with the join present, gives the same result by another route. This is the reading behind the commonest love-marriage disappointment, the chart with a fine fifth-seventh connection whose native did not marry the person they loved: the connection was real and the house it was made in took it. The reading says so, and says where the marriage does come from instead, since a denied join usually leaves the seventh free to make an arranged bond, which is what happens; the general reading of why marriages are delayed in good charts is in Marriage Delayed Despite a Good Chart.
What the Navamsa confirms
The D9 is the marriage chart, and a love-marriage signature in the rashi chart is confirmed when the Navamsa repeats the join: the D9 fifth and seventh lords connected, Venus or Rahu on the D9 fifth or seventh, or the rashi fifth lord landing in the D9 seventh. A rashi join without a Navamsa join gives the love marriage that happens and does not settle, the romance that became a marriage and stayed a romance in its instability; a Navamsa join without a rashi join gives the marriage arranged by the families that becomes a love in its living, which is the arranged marriage the couple describe as a love marriage ten years on. The Navamsa also refines the partner: the D9 seventh and its lord describe the spouse’s nature more closely than the rashi seventh, and a Rahu on the D9 seventh confirms the outsider that a rashi Rahu suggested. The Navamsa’s reading for marriage is in the Navamsa marriage guide, and a love-marriage reading that has not opened it has given half the answer.
The family’s consent in the chart: the fourth and the ninth
The family’s part in a love marriage is read from the fourth, the mother and the home, and the ninth, the father and the tradition, and their relation to the fifth and seventh. The fourth and ninth lords in connection with the seventh lord give the family that agrees, and the love-cum-arranged marriage; the fourth or ninth lord in the sixth from the seventh lord, or afflicting the fifth, gives the family that opposes; Saturn on the fourth or ninth gives the family that consents late and after a long argument; Rahu on the ninth gives the family whose tradition the marriage breaks. The consent has its own timing, in the sub-periods of the fourth and ninth lords, and a love marriage that waits for the family usually waits for one of those; the full reading of opposition, its shapes and its resolution, is in Family Opposition to Love Marriage, and the inter-caste and foreign spouse in particular in the inter-caste and foreign spouse reading in KP.
Timing: when the fifth and seventh lords’ periods meet
A relationship begins in the fifth lord’s period or sub-period, or Venus’s, or that of a planet in the fifth; a marriage happens in the seventh lord’s, or Venus’s, or that of a planet in the seventh; and a love marriage happens when the two meet, the fifth lord’s major period with the seventh lord’s sub-period or the reverse, or Venus’s sub-period inside either, which is the classical timing rule for it. A chart with the join whose fifth and seventh lords’ periods never coincide in the marrying years has the love and the marriage in different periods, and the reading says whether the relationship of the fifth lord’s period will still be there when the seventh lord’s arrives; often it is, and the wait is the courtship, and often it is not, and the seventh lord’s period marries someone else. Jupiter’s transit over the seventh, the fifth or the natal Venus gives the year within the period, and the general timing of marriage, with the transits and the sub-period pairs, is in Marriage Timing by Dasha and Transits.
The same reading from the Moon
The fifth and seventh from the Moon are the romance and the bond as the native feels them, and the reading is done twice. A rashi chart with the join and a Moon chart without it gives the love marriage that the native does not experience as a choice, the relationship that simply became the marriage; the reverse gives the arranged marriage the native experiences as a love. When the two agree the reading is firm, and when they disagree the Navamsa decides. The Moon chart also reads the emotional side of the family’s consent, since the fourth from the Moon is the mother as the native feels her, and a mother who opposes in the rashi chart and consents in the Moon chart is the mother who objects and gives way.
A worked chart: the fifth and seventh lords in each other’s houses
A Leo lagna woman, particulars altered. Jupiter, lord of the fifth and eighth, sits in Aquarius in the seventh; Saturn, lord of the sixth and seventh, sits in Sagittarius in the fifth: the fifth and seventh lords in each other’s houses, the exchange, the strongest love-marriage signature the chart can carry. Venus, lord of the third and tenth, in Libra, its own sign, in the third. Mars, lord of the fourth and ninth, in Leo in the lagna. The Sun, the lagna lord, in Virgo in the second with Mercury, lord of the second and eleventh, in its own sign. The Moon, lord of the twelfth, in Gemini in the eleventh. Rahu in Pisces in the eighth, Ketu in Virgo in the second with the Sun and Mercury.
Read the signatures. The exchange, first row of the table: love marriage, almost always. The denial check: the fifth lord also rules the eighth and sits in the seventh, which adds a crisis to the join but does not make the join in a dusthana; Rahu in the eighth is the shadow of a break in the courtship. The family: Mars, lord of both the fourth and the ninth, in the lagna, the family’s two houses ruled by one planet standing on the native herself, which reads as a family that is formidable and that agrees once the native stands her ground; Saturn, the seventh lord, in the fifth aspects the seventh, the eleventh and the second from there, so the family’s consent is slow. The Navamsa, from her chart: the D9 fifth lord in the D9 seventh, the join repeated.
She met him at twenty-four, in Saturn-Venus, the seventh lord’s period with the marriage significator’s sub-period, at the college the third house’s Venus describes, a love that began as friendship. Saturn-Sun and Saturn-Moon were the years of the relationship as a relationship, and Saturn-Mars, the fourth and ninth lord’s sub-period, was the family’s discovery and refusal, the Mars in the lagna holding both parents’ houses and saying no, with a break in the courtship in the same sub-period, Rahu in the eighth’s crisis. Saturn-Rahu was the three years in which the relationship continued at a distance and the families were worked on; and Saturn-Jupiter, the seventh lord’s major period with the fifth lord’s sub-period, the two lords of the exchange meeting in the calendar, was the marriage, at thirty-four, with both families present, the consent arriving in the same sub-period as the marriage because the seventh lord in the fifth aspects the eleventh, the house of the wish fulfilled. Love marriage by the exchange, a long courtship because the exchange’s two lords took a decade to meet in the dasha, denied for a season by the fourth-and-ninth lord’s sub-period, and timed by the two lords’ periods meeting, which is the whole of this page in one chart.
Frequently asked questions
Which combination indicates love marriage in a kundli?
The fifth house of romance joined to the seventh house of the bond: the fifth and seventh lords conjunct, in mutual aspect or in each other’s houses, which is the strongest form; or Venus, Mars or Rahu standing in the fifth or seventh; with the Navamsa repeating the join as confirmation. One signature gives a love marriage as a tendency and two make it likely. The join matters more than the strength of either house, since a love marriage is a connection and not a quantity.
How do I know if I will have a love marriage or an arranged marriage?
Look for the join between the fifth and seventh houses. If their lords are connected or Venus, Mars or Rahu sits in one of them, the chart inclines to love marriage; if the seventh lord is connected to the fourth or ninth lord, or Jupiter sits on the seventh, with the fifth quiet, the chart inclines to an arranged bond made through the family houses; if both are present, the couple choose and the families agree, the love-cum-arranged marriage that is the commonest case. The reading is done from the lagna, from the Moon and in the Navamsa.
What denies love marriage even when the 5th and 7th are connected?
A join made in or through the sixth, eighth or twelfth house: the two lords conjunct in the twelfth give the love that ends in departure, in the eighth the love broken by a crisis, in the sixth the love that becomes a dispute; the fifth lord in the seventh with the twelfth lord beside it, or Ketu on the seventh, does the same. The connection is real and the house it is made in takes it, and the seventh is usually left free to make an arranged bond instead.
Does Rahu in the 7th house give love marriage?
Rahu on the seventh or fifth gives the unconventional choice, the partner from another community, religion, country or generation, the love the family did not expect, and it is the placement most often behind the marriage the relatives talked about. It reads as a love marriage outside the community, with the caution that Rahu’s choice can be an appetite rather than a bond, which the dispositor and the Navamsa decide.
When does a love marriage happen according to dasha?
When the fifth and seventh lords’ periods meet: the fifth lord’s major period with the seventh lord’s sub-period or the reverse, or Venus’s sub-period inside either. The relationship begins in the fifth lord’s or Venus’s period and the marriage happens in the seventh lord’s, and a chart in which the two never coincide in the marrying years has the love and the marriage in different periods, which the reading then separates. Jupiter’s transit over the seventh, the fifth or natal Venus gives the year.
Will my family agree to my love marriage as per astrology?
The family is the fourth house, the mother, and the ninth, the father and the tradition. Their lords connected to the seventh lord give the family that agrees; the fourth or ninth lord afflicting the fifth or sitting in the sixth from the seventh lord gives the family that opposes; Saturn on the fourth or ninth gives consent that comes late and after argument; Rahu on the ninth the tradition that the marriage breaks. Consent arrives in the fourth or ninth lord’s sub-periods, and a love marriage that waits for the family usually waits for one of those.
Is love marriage or arranged marriage better according to astrology?
Neither; the chart reads which the native inclines to and not which is better, and the arranged chart is not a lesser chart but a different one, with the bond made through the family houses and often becoming a love in its living, which the Navamsa join shows. What the chart does say is which arrangement suits a particular native’s houses, and a love-marriage chart pushed into an arranged bond, or the reverse, is the mismatch that some later unhappiness comes from.

The join, the denial, the consent and the year: one reading.
A relationship consultation reads the fifth-seventh connection in your chart and Navamsa, names which of the ten signatures you carry and the partner it describes, checks it against the dusthana denial, reads your family's consent from the fourth and ninth, and marks the period in which the two lords meet.
