Astrology in Investigation
When standard investigative methods reach dead ends, some turn to unusual resources. KP Horary has been applied to forensic questions: Where is the missing person? Are they alive? Who is responsible? These applications push horary into territory that requires both technical precision and profound ethical awareness.
This article examines the methodology while acknowledging the serious limitations and responsibilities involved.
The Horary Framework for Missing Persons
In a missing person horary, the chart is cast for when the astrologer receives and understands the question. No birth data of the missing person is required.
House assignments:
1st house (Ascendant): Represents the missing person.
4th house: Their current location or condition.
7th house: The other party (if abduction is suspected, the abductor).
8th house: Danger, death, transformation.
12th house: Hidden places, confinement, isolation.
Will They Return?
The primary question. Examine the 1st cusp Sub-Lord:
Return indicated: 1st cusp Sub-Lord signifies 2nd (family reunion), 8th (return, as 8th is also house of longevity and coming back), 11th (desire fulfilled).
Return not indicated: 1st cusp Sub-Lord signifies Badhaka house (obstruction), Maraka houses (2nd and 7th as death-inflicting), combined with 8th and 12th (death and loss).
The 8th house’s dual signification is important here. It represents both danger/death AND return/revival. Context from other significations determines which meaning applies.
Alive or Deceased
This is the question families most want answered, and it is the one a responsible practitioner declines. The classical literature does contain combinations claimed to separate the living from the dead in a missing person chart. I do not publish them and I do not use them. Horary carries a real error rate, and on this question every kind of error is devastating. A wrong indication of death can end a search that would have succeeded. A wrong assurance of life prepares a family for a second loss. Even an accurate reading, delivered by an astrologer instead of the authorities, causes harm that cannot be repaired.

What horary can responsibly offer is covered elsewhere in this series, the timing of return and the recovery of what is lost. On the question of life and death, the only sound counsel is continued investigation through police and official channels. If a chart makes you privately pessimistic, the correct response is to encourage the search to continue, not to pronounce a fate.
Location Clues
Traditional horary offers location guidance through planetary and sign symbolism:
Direction:
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): East
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): South
Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): West
Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): North
Type of location:
Fire signs: Near heat sources, engines, fireplaces
Earth signs: Ground level, gardens, storage areas, basements
Air signs: Upper floors, near windows, open areas, communication equipment
Water signs: Near water bodies, bathrooms, damp areas, underground
The 4th cusp sign and the Moon’s sign provide primary location hints. These are approximations, not GPS coordinates.
Voluntary vs Involuntary Absence
Distinguishing whether someone left voluntarily affects interpretation:
Voluntary departure (runaway):
Strong 12th house signification (desire to escape)
3rd house activation (short journey by choice)
7th house not prominently involved (no “other party” forcing the situation)
Involuntary absence (abduction):
7th house strongly activated (another party involved)
Malefics (Mars, Saturn, Rahu) connected to the 1st and 7th houses
8th house activation (danger to the person)
Characteristics of the Other Party
If abduction or foul play is indicated, the 7th house and its lord describe the perpetrator:
Planetary ruler of the 7th: General characteristics
Sign on the 7th cusp: Physical attributes and temperament
Aspects to 7th house: Circumstances of involvement
This information is highly speculative and should never be treated as identification. It might, at most, suggest a general profile if authorities request astrological input.
Timing of Events
When will they be found? When will they return?
Ruling Planets at the question moment suggest timing:
Events tend to occur when the Moon transits nakshatras ruled by the Ruling Planets.
Cardinal signs suggest days to weeks; fixed signs suggest weeks to months; mutable signs suggest variable timing.

Victory in litigation: 6th cusp Sub-Lord signifying 6th and 11th (defeating opponent, gaining)
Defeat: 6th cusp Sub-Lord signifying 5th (opponent’s gain, as 5th is 11th from 7th) and 12th (own loss)
Imprisonment: 6th cusp Sub-Lord connected to 2nd (separation from family), 3rd (leaving home), 8th (restriction), 12th (confinement)
Planetary Roles in Forensic Analysis
Sun: Authority figures, government involvement, judges
Mars: Violence, weapons, aggression, police/military
Mercury: Evidence, documents, communication, witnesses
Saturn: Delays, death, imprisonment, restriction
Rahu: Deception, false evidence, unusual circumstances, foreigners
These associations help interpret the chart’s story but remain general rather than specific.
Ethical Boundaries
Forensic horary demands the highest ethical standards:
Never identify individuals. Saying “the perpetrator is a Mars-type person” is irresponsible. It could lead to false accusations.
Never replace investigation. Horary insights, if used at all, should supplement, never replace, proper investigative work.
Never deliver death predictions to families. The psychological harm of a wrong prediction is devastating. The harm of a correct prediction delivered inappropriately is also severe.
Acknowledge uncertainty. Horary is a tool with significant error rates. Treat all forensic conclusions as hypotheses, not facts.
Refer to authorities. If you genuinely suspect criminal activity, the correct response is contacting law enforcement, not playing detective with astrology.
Limitations
Forensic astrology is not:
Evidence admissible in court
Reliable enough for definitive conclusions
A substitute for professional investigation
Appropriate for public predictions in active cases
It may, at best, offer a perspective when other avenues are exhausted, and even then, its conclusions should be held loosely.
Historical Applications
Horary has been consulted in notable cases, sometimes with apparent accuracy, sometimes not. The cases where it appeared to work are remembered; the failures are forgotten. This selection bias makes claims of forensic horary efficacy unreliable.
Responsible practitioners neither dismiss the technique entirely nor oversell its capabilities.
When to Decline
Decline forensic horary questions when:
The querent seeks to harm someone based on your analysis
Active police investigation is underway and your input could interfere
You sense the question is not genuine
You are not confident in your horary skills
The emotional stakes are too high for the accuracy horary can provide
Conclusion
Forensic astrology represents horary’s most challenging application. The stakes are highest, the margin for error most damaging, and the ethical pitfalls most severe. KP Horary offers a framework for analyzing these questions, but that framework’s reliability does not match its ambition. Practitioners who engage with forensic questions must do so with humility, restraint, and absolute commitment to causing no harm.
