Durudhara Yoga: The Moon Held From Both Sides

Durudhara yoga is the fullest of the Moon’s three accompanied conditions. The kundali calculator names it when planets other than the Sun stand on both sides of the Moon, one or more in the sign before it and one or more in the sign after it, so that the Moon sits between company. The classical texts give it the most generous description of the three: wealth, comfort, vehicles, generosity and a good name. It appears in about one chart in nine, and its real value depends heavily on which planets hold the two sides, since a Moon flanked by benefics and a Moon flanked by malefics are very different things. This page reads it from the rule to two charts from practice.

Durudhara combines the Moon’s other two yogas: Sunapha, with planets only after the Moon, and Anapha, with planets only before it. Its counterpart around the Sun is Ubhayachari yoga, and its opposite, a Moon with nothing on either side, is the condition behind Kemadruma yoga. What the Moon itself signifies is set out on the Moon page.

Conventions used. The reading is Parashari, with whole-sign houses, Vimshottari dasha, and the Lahiri ayanamsa as Jagannatha Hora applies it. The five planets from Mars to Saturn are the only ones that count beside the Moon; the Sun, Rahu and Ketu are excluded, the rule the calculator’s figures follow. Percentages are drawn from a 60,000-moment Swiss Ephemeris sample covering 1950 to 2010.

What Durudhara yoga is

The rule has two parts, both counted by sign from the Moon. At least one of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn must occupy the sign immediately after the Moon, and at least one must occupy the sign immediately before it. When both conditions hold, the chart has Durudhara yoga, planets on both sides of the Moon. The number of planets on each side does not matter, and neither do the degrees.

The Sun is excluded, as it is from all the Moon’s yogas, so a chart with the Sun on one side of the Moon and a planet on the other has Sunapha or Anapha, not Durudhara. Rahu and Ketu are excluded under the classical rule, which is also the rule the calculator’s own frequencies match.

Sunapha and Anapha together

Because Durudhara is Sunapha and Anapha at once, it carries both sets of themes. From the planet after the Moon it takes the drive to build and earn; from the planet before the Moon it takes composure, conduct and the capacity to rest. The mind in a Durudhara chart is supported in both directions, toward what it reaches for and in what it has already absorbed.

That balance is the yoga’s practical signature. People with a clean Durudhara often seem both capable and settled, able to work hard without being consumed by it, and able to enjoy what they have without losing the wish to build more. Where one side is much stronger than the other, the reading leans toward Sunapha or Anapha accordingly.

How common Durudhara yoga is

Durudhara forms in 10.9 percent of charts, about one in nine, which makes it the rarest of the three accompanied conditions; Sunapha and Anapha each appear in about 22 percent. Each of the five planets takes part in between 43 and 53 percent of Durudhara charts, with Venus, Mercury and Mars slightly ahead of Jupiter and Saturn.

Its relative rarity is one reason the texts praise it more than the other two, and in practice a Durudhara formed by well-placed planets is a genuinely useful feature. It is still common enough that the label alone settles little, and the planets on the two sides decide most of the reading.

What the classical texts promise

The verses describe the Durudhara native as wealthy, well provided with vehicles and servants, generous in giving, fond of comfort and good things, and well known. It is the richest description among the Moon’s yogas, and it combines the earning promised by Sunapha with the comfort and good conduct promised by Anapha. Some versions add eloquence and a capacity to support many people.

Read practically, the classical Durudhara yoga effects describe a person whose resources and whose composure support each other: someone who earns and keeps, spends generously without anxiety, and becomes a support for others. The scale again comes from the rest of the chart. A Durudhara in a modest chart gives a comfortable, generous life rather than great wealth.

The commonest pairings across the Moon

Every Durudhara chart has at least one planet on each side, and the pair across the Moon gives the yoga its particular colour. The six commonest pairs, with the share of Durudhara charts that contain each, are these.

Pair across the MoonShare of Durudhara chartsHow the pairing tends to read
Mercury and Venus19 percentA refined, sociable mind with a talent for trade or the arts; usually born near the new moon
Mars and Mercury19 percentQuick, sharp and enterprising; good at negotiation, sometimes argumentative
Mars and Venus17 percentWarm, energetic and pleasure-loving; drive and charm in the same person
Jupiter and Venus15 percentThe two benefic ministers around the Moon; the classic generous, prosperous Durudhara
Saturn and Venus14 percentComfort built through discipline; wealth that grows steadily and lasts
Jupiter and Mars14 percentPrincipled courage; leadership backed by conviction

Other pairs, Jupiter with Mercury or Saturn, Mercury with Saturn, and Mars with Saturn, each appear in 12 to 13 percent of cases. Which side each planet occupies adds nuance, the planet after the Moon shaping what is built and the planet before it shaping how the person carries themselves, but the pair is the first thing to read.

Benefics on both sides, or malefics on both sides

A second classical idea sits on top of Durudhara. A planet or house hemmed in between two planets is said to be in kartari, literally between the blades of scissors. When the planets on both sides are benefics, it is shubha kartari, a protected position; when both sides are malefics, it is papa kartari, a pressured one. For the Moon, that means a Durudhara with Jupiter, Venus or Mercury on both sides is also a shubha kartari Moon, which happens in 22 percent of Durudhara charts, and this is the form in which the classical promise holds most fully.

The reverse case, Mars or Saturn on both sides with no benefic among them, is rare, about 5 percent of Durudhara charts. It still counts as Durudhara, but most practitioners read it through papa kartari first: a mind under pressure from two directions, often carrying heavy responsibilities, whose resourcefulness is real but hard-won. The remaining charts, about three in four, have a mix of benefic and malefic, and the benefic side usually decides the tone.

The new-moon Durudhara

One Durudhara chart in five has the Moon within twelve degrees of the Sun, which means a birth on Amavasya or Shukla Pratipada. The reason lies in the commonest pairing. Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun, so for them to stand on opposite sides of the Moon, the Moon itself must be close to the Sun, in the dark of the month. A Mercury-Venus Durudhara is therefore very often a new-moon birth.

In these charts the yoga is read together with the Moon’s combustion, as described in combust Moon and in the site’s article on the Amavasya birth, the Sun-Moon conjunction. The planets on both sides still support the Moon, but the mind they support works close to the Sun’s purposes, and its comfort and generosity often show through duty or a public role rather than privately.

The opposite of Kemadruma

Durudhara and Kemadruma are the two ends of the same scale. Kemadruma’s basic condition is a Moon with no planet on either side, and under the classical rule that condition applies to nearly half of all charts, which is why the calculator flags it so often and why the site’s Kemadruma guide spends most of its length on the conditions that cancel it. Durudhara is the Moon with company on both sides, the fullest protection from isolation the Moon can have.

So a Durudhara chart can never have Kemadruma, and a person worried about Kemadruma who finds planets on both sides of their Moon has nothing to worry about on that score. Between the two ends lie Sunapha and Anapha, where the Moon has company on one side only, and that is also enough to rule Kemadruma out.

Durudhara yoga in kundli: reading the three houses

Counted from the lagna, a Durudhara yoga in kundli terms always occupies three consecutive houses: the Moon’s house in the middle and the houses on either side. The trio shows what the supported mind sits between. A Moon in the tenth flanked by the ninth and eleventh places the career between fortune and gains, one of the strongest arrangements for public success. A Moon in the lagna flanked by the twelfth and second places the self between spending and saving, a classic form for wealth that circulates. A Moon in the fourth flanked by the third and fifth places home between effort and creativity.

The lordships of the two flanking planets matter at least as much as the houses. A Durudhara whose flanking planets rule the lagna, the ninth, the tenth or the eleventh carries its promise into the parts of life that matter most for prosperity; one whose flanking planets rule the sixth, eighth or twelfth brings those houses’ demands into the yoga alongside its support.

When Durudhara yoga gives results

With two sides, the yoga has two sets of periods. The Mahadasha of either flanking planet activates it, and a sub-period of one flanking planet inside the other’s Mahadasha is often the most productive stretch of all, because both sides of the Moon are then active together. The Moon’s own ten-year period, covered in Moon Mahadasha, brings the yoga’s comfort and security into daily life.

Within those periods, Jupiter’s transits over either flanking sign or over the natal Moon commonly mark the years of growth. A Durudhara formed by slow planets such as Jupiter and Saturn tends to build over long stretches; one formed by Mercury, Venus or Mars tends to show sooner and in shorter bursts.

Two charts with Durudhara yoga

A Taurus ascendant man, particulars altered. The Moon in its own sign Cancer in the third, in Ashlesha, a strong Moon of the kind Moon in Cancer describes; Jupiter, his eleventh lord, in Gemini in the second, the sign before the Moon; Venus, his lagna lord, in Leo in the fourth, the sign after it. That is a shubha kartari Durudhara, the two benefic ministers holding the Moon from both sides. Six years of Mercury and Ketu’s seven came first, and Venus’s twenty began at thirteen. He joined his family’s small jewellery shop at twenty. At twenty-four, in Venus-Jupiter, with both flanking planets active together, he opened a second store, and by thirty-one, in Venus-Mercury, Mercury ruling his second house of wealth, he had five and had begun paying for a girls’ school in his grandparents’ village, the generosity the classical verses attach to this yoga.

A woman with a Capricorn ascendant, details changed. The Moon in Libra in the tenth, early in Swati, a public Moon as Moon in the 10th house describes; Saturn, her lagna lord, in Virgo in the ninth, the sign before the Moon; Mars in its own sign Scorpio in the eleventh, the sign after it, with no benefic beside either: a papa kartari Durudhara, the Moon pressed from both sides by malefics. Rahu’s period ran to thirteen and Jupiter’s to twenty-nine, when Saturn’s nineteen began. At twenty-six her elder brother emigrated and she took over the family’s grain wholesale business, heavily in debt and under pressure from creditors and competitors. Through Saturn’s period she worked it back to health. At thirty-seven, in Saturn-Venus, Venus being the yogakaraka for Capricorn, she cleared the last of the loans, and at forty-two, in Saturn-Mars, with Mars ruling her eleventh house of gains, the business had doubled.

The first chart is Durudhara as the texts describe it, prosperity and generosity with benefics on both sides. The second shows the malefic form honestly: pressure from both directions for years, and a resourcefulness that won through because the malefics were her lagna lord and a strong eleventh-house Mars.

Frequently asked questions

What is Durudhara yoga?

Durudhara yoga forms when at least one of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn stands in the sign before the Moon and at least one stands in the sign after it. The Sun and the nodes do not count. It is the Moon held from both sides, Sunapha and Anapha together.

Is Durudhara yoga good?

Is Durudhara yoga good in most charts? Yes, and it is the most praised of the Moon’s yogas, associated with wealth, comfort and generosity. It is at its best with benefics on both sides, a shubha kartari Moon. With malefics on both sides it becomes a pressured position whose results come through effort.

How rare is Durudhara yoga?

It appears in about 11 percent of charts, one in nine, making it the least common of the three conditions in which the Moon has company. Sunapha and Anapha each appear in about 22 percent.

What is the difference between Durudhara and Ubhayachari yoga?

Both describe a luminary with planets on both sides. Ubhayachari is counted around the Sun and speaks of support around identity and authority; Durudhara is counted around the Moon and speaks of support around the mind, comfort and resources.

What if both planets beside the Moon are malefics?

Then the Moon is also in papa kartari, hemmed in by Mars or Saturn on both sides. The yoga still forms, but it tends to describe pressure from two directions and responsibilities carried for long periods. Where the malefics rule good houses for the ascendant, the results can still be strong.

Does Durudhara yoga cancel Kemadruma?

Yes. Kemadruma requires the Moon to have no planet on either side, so a chart with Durudhara cannot have it. Sunapha or Anapha alone are enough to rule it out as well.

When does Durudhara yoga give results?

In the Mahadasha of either flanking planet, and most strongly when a sub-period of one flanking planet falls inside the other’s Mahadasha, since both sides of the Moon are then active. The Moon’s own period brings its comfort and security into everyday life.
