Vosi Yoga: The Planet That Rises Before the Sun

Vosi yoga is the name the kundali calculator gives when a chart has planets in the sign just before the Sun and none in the sign just after it. The older spelling is Vasi, and some books write Voshi; all three are the same yoga. It is half of a pair, and its other half, Vesi, is the mirror image. With a planet on only one side, the Sun has company behind it but an empty sign ahead, and the classical texts read that as a particular kind of support: skill, generosity and learning that stand behind a person rather than in front of them. The yoga is common, and its value in any chart depends on which planet forms it and where, so this page works through those questions and ends with two readings from practice.

When planets occupy both signs beside the Sun, the chart has the fuller Ubhayachari yoga instead, and when they occupy only the sign after the Sun it has Vesi yoga. The Moon’s counterpart, formed by planets in the sign before the Moon, is Anapha yoga. The Sun’s own significations are on the Sun page.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, the Lahiri ayanamsa and Vimshottari dasha, the Jagannatha Hora settings. Positions are taken sign by sign from the Sun, never counting the Moon, and Rahu and Ketu are left out, as most classical authorities require. The frequencies below were computed from the Swiss Ephemeris over 21,900 daily charts, 1950 to 2010.

What Vosi yoga is

Find the sign the Sun occupies and look at the sign immediately before it, the twelfth counted from the Sun. If one or more planets other than the Moon sit there, and the sign after the Sun is empty of planets, the chart has Vosi yoga. A planet in the twelfth from the Sun is the defining feature, so the yoga is sometimes described simply as a planet in 12th from Sun, and the twelfth’s themes of giving and expense, covered on the 12th house page, colour its reading. The position is judged by sign, so a planet at the very beginning of that sign counts as much as one a few degrees from the Sun.

The rule excludes the Moon because the Moon has its own yogas counted from its own position, and it excludes Rahu and Ketu in most classical versions. A planet sharing the Sun’s own sign does not count. Where software includes the nodes, a node alone in the sign before the Sun can produce a Vosi label that a classical reading would not give, so it is worth checking which planet actually sits there.

The planet that rises before the Sun

Any planet in the twelfth from the Sun sits west of it along the zodiac, and so it clears the eastern horizon ahead of the Sun. When it is far enough from the Sun’s glare it is a morning planet, visible in the dawn sky and gone from view once the Sun is up. The Vosi planet is, quite literally, the one that goes ahead of the Sun into the day, and that image carries through its reading: preparation, early work and the ground laid before the Sun appears.

The astronomy also shapes the planets’ condition. When Mercury forms Vosi yoga it is retrograde in about 13 percent of cases and combust in about 19 percent; Venus is retrograde in about 8 percent. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are never retrograde in this position, because they only turn retrograde when they stand far from the Sun, but each is combust in 10 to 18 percent of cases when it sits close to the sign boundary. A retrograde Mercury behind the Sun adds the reflective, second-draft quality described in retrograde Mercury to the yoga.

How often Vosi yoga forms

Vosi yoga on its own, with planets before the Sun and none after it, appears in 28.7 percent of charts, a little more than one in four. In six of those charts in ten a single planet forms it; in three in ten there are two planets in the sign before the Sun, and occasionally three or four. Programs that add Rahu and Ketu to the count report it alone slightly less often, about 25 percent, because some charts that would be Vosi become Ubhayachari once a node on the other side is counted.

The frequency sets the right expectation. A yoga present in a quarter of charts is not a mark of an exceptional life by itself. It describes a kind of support, and the reading turns on its quality: the nature of the planet behind the Sun, its dignity, the houses it rules, and how strong the Sun it supports is.

What the texts say about Vasi yoga

The classical descriptions of Vasi, as the older texts spell it, are short and generous. With benefic planets in the sign before the Sun, the native is described as skilful, charitable, learned, strong and well known, liked by those in power and happy in their work. With malefic planets there, the same verses turn the qualities around, and the person may work in the service of others, struggle to be recognised, or give away more than they can afford. Saravali and Phaladeepika both treat the yoga this way, as a question of whether the planet behind the Sun helps or hinders.

The generosity in the classical list is worth noticing. The twelfth from any point in the chart is the house of giving and expense, and the Vosi planet sits in the twelfth from the Sun. The texts read that as a person whose skills and resources flow outward in the service of their position: the craftsman who trains apprentices, the official who spends on the office rather than on themselves. These Vosi yoga effects are about what a person gives before they receive.

Preparation, background and what comes first

In consultation, the yoga is most useful as a description of how a person’s position is prepared. The planet before the Sun works ahead of the self: the study done before the examination, the years of training before the first public role, the counsel given privately before a decision is announced. People with a strong form of it are often better prepared than their peers and more generous with their preparation, and they are frequently the ones who brief the person in charge rather than the person in charge themselves, at least early in life.

The quality of that background depends on the planet. With a benefic behind the Sun, the preparation is supported and the reputation that follows is steady. With a malefic, the preparation is hard-won, sometimes through difficult service, isolation or work far from home, and the reputation arrives later but tends to rest on real competence. In both cases the yoga describes foundations more than appearances.

The planets that form it

Venus takes part in 57 percent of Vosi charts and Mercury in 45 percent, because they are the planets most often found close to the Sun. Venus behind the Sun gives grace, diplomacy and artistic preparation, often a good eye trained over years. Mercury gives study, analysis and written groundwork, the person who has read everything before the meeting. Mars takes part in 19 percent and brings energy spent in advance, training, physical preparation or competitive groundwork. Jupiter, in 15 percent, gives counsel and teaching, frequently a mentor or teacher who stands behind the person’s rise. Saturn, in 14 percent, gives discipline and endurance, and a long apprenticeship.

When two planets share the sign before the Sun, their natures combine, and the pairings are read as they would be in any conjunction. Mercury with Venus, the commonest pair, gives preparation that is both careful and attractive; Mars with Saturn gives groundwork done under pressure.

Benefic, malefic and mixed Vosi

The benefic form, with only Mercury, Venus or Jupiter in the sign before the Sun, is by far the commonest form, found in 69 percent of Vosi charts. Malefic-only Vosi, with Mars or Saturn alone there, accounts for 11 percent, and mixed forms, a benefic and a malefic together, for the remaining 20 percent. The benefic form is the one closest to the classical promise, and it tends to give a background that others can see and value.

Two refinements matter more than the label. Mercury is benefic only when it is not joined by a malefic, so a Mercury behind the Sun beside Saturn reads as mixed. And a planet’s functional role for the ascendant can outweigh its natural nature: a Saturn behind the Sun that is the yogakaraka for a Taurus or Libra ascendant can give a stronger Vosi than a Venus that rules the sixth.

Vosi yoga in kundli houses: where the planet falls

The planet behind the Sun always sits one house before the Sun counted from the lagna, and the pair of houses shapes how Vosi yoga in kundli terms actually shows. The table gives the usual reading for each position of the Sun.

The house the Sun rules for the ascendant matters as well. Leo ascendants have the Sun as lagna lord, so the yoga there supports the person directly, while for Virgo the Sun rules the twelfth and the yoga’s support tends to flow into foreign work, institutions or private life.

Vosi, Vesi and the full Ubhayachari

The three Sun yogas differ only in which side of the Sun is occupied, but the difference shows in charts. Vosi, with planets before the Sun, tends to describe support that prepares and stands behind: background, training, private counsel. Vesi, with planets after the Sun, tends to describe support that follows and carries forward: speech, resources, the people who act on a person’s decisions. Ubhayachari, with both, describes support on both sides and is read in its own article.

For a person with this yoga alone, the practical implication is that the sign after the Sun is empty, and whatever follows through on their plans often has to come from elsewhere in the chart: a strong second or eleventh house, a well-placed Moon, or partners. Many people with a strong form of it do their best work when they pair their preparation with someone else’s delivery.

When Vosi yoga gives its results

The yoga comes to life in the dasha periods of the planet that forms it and of the Sun. The Mahadasha of the Vosi planet is usually when the preparation it describes is laid down, and a sub-period of the Sun within that Mahadasha is often the moment it pays off, because the planet behind the Sun is then delivering to the Sun itself. The Sun’s own six-year Mahadasha, read in Sun Mahadasha, can bring the recognition the preparation earned, especially when the Sun is strong.

Transits help locate the year. Jupiter moving over the natal Sun or over the Vosi planet’s sign commonly coincides with the step from background to foreground, but only within a supporting dasha. Where a slow planet such as Saturn forms it, the timing tends to run late, with the reward arriving in the second half of a long period rather than at its start.

Two charts with Vosi yoga

A Gemini ascendant man, particulars altered. The Sun in Pisces in the tenth house, where it has directional strength; Jupiter, his seventh and tenth lord, placed in Aquarius in the ninth, one sign behind the Sun, with no planet in Aries after it: a benefic Vosi yoga with a teacher’s planet behind a tenth-house Sun. The Moon in Libra in the fifth, at the start of Swati, so almost all of Rahu’s eighteen years ran first and Jupiter’s sixteen began at seventeen. He trained in classical music under one guru for eleven years, the ninth-house Jupiter behind the career, a placement read more fully in Jupiter in the 9th house. He performed only in his teacher’s ensemble until twenty-eight, when in Jupiter-Sun, the Sun’s own sub-period inside the Vosi planet’s Mahadasha, he gave his first solo concert and was signed by a festival circuit the same season.

A Leo ascendant man, particulars altered. The Sun in its own sign in the lagna; Saturn, his sixth and seventh lord, placed in Cancer in the twelfth, one sign behind the Sun, with no planet in Virgo after it: a malefic Vosi yoga, Saturn working behind a strong Sun from the house of foreign lands. The Moon in Libra in the third, late in Swati, so the end of Rahu’s period and Jupiter’s sixteen came first, and Saturn’s nineteen began at twenty. At twenty-one, in Saturn-Saturn, he took a job as a site supervisor in the Gulf, long hours in hard conditions for nearly nine years, much as Saturn in the 12th house describes. At thirty, in Saturn-Sun, he came home with his savings and set up a small contracting business of his own, the preparation done far away finally serving the Sun in his own lagna.

The first chart shows the benefic form as it usually works, a long apprenticeship under a teacher that turned into a public career in the Sun’s sub-period. The second shows the malefic form: harder, lonelier preparation, and a reward that came only when the dasha turned to the Sun.

Frequently asked questions

What is Vosi yoga?

Vosi yoga forms when one or more planets other than the Moon occupy the sign just before the Sun and no planet occupies the sign just after it. It belongs to the Surya yogas and describes support that stands behind a person: preparation, training and counsel.

Is Vosi yoga the same as Vasi yoga?

Yes. Vasi yoga is the older spelling used in many translations of the classical texts, and Voshi is a third spelling. All three names refer to planets in the twelfth sign from the Sun with the second sign from the Sun empty.

Is Vosi yoga good?

Is Vosi yoga good depends on the planet forming it. With a benefic such as Venus, Mercury or Jupiter it describes skill, learning and generous support, and the benefic form is the commonest. With Saturn or Mars it describes harder preparation and later recognition. The Sun’s strength and the houses involved decide how much it gives.

How common is Vosi yoga?

Vosi yoga alone appears in about 29 percent of charts under the classical rule, and slightly less often in software that counts Rahu and Ketu. It is common enough that its quality matters more than its presence.

What is the difference between Vosi and Vesi yoga?

Vosi has planets in the sign before the Sun, which rise ahead of it and describe preparation and background. Vesi has planets in the sign after the Sun, which set after it and describe follow-through and resources. With planets on both sides the yoga becomes Ubhayachari.

What if the planet before the Sun is a malefic?

A malefic Vosi yoga, with Saturn or Mars behind the Sun, tends to describe preparation done under pressure, in service or far from home, with recognition arriving later. It is not a curse. Where the malefic is a functional benefic for the ascendant, such as Saturn for Taurus or Libra, it can give a strong and lasting result.

When does Vosi yoga give results?

Mainly in the Mahadasha and sub-periods of the planet forming it, and in the Sun’s own periods. The Sun’s sub-period inside the Vosi planet’s Mahadasha is a frequent turning point, when preparation becomes recognition.
