Every page in this cluster has used the fifth and the seventh as if the difference between them were obvious, and this page makes it exact. The fifth is romance: the feeling, the pleasure, the choice, the thing that happens to a native and is enjoyed. The seventh is the bond: the partnership as a commitment, the other person as an equal and an obligation, the marriage as an institution whether or not there is a wedding. They are separate houses, two signs apart, and the geometry between them decides most of what the earlier pages read. Counted from the fifth, the seventh is the third house, so the bond is the romance’s effort, courage and communication, the thing the romance has to do rather than feel. Counted from the seventh, the fifth is the eleventh, so the romance is the bond’s gain and fulfilment, the thing the bond wishes for and receives. No ascendant has one planet ruling both, so the join between them is always a meeting of two planets. Only Saturn’s third aspect from the fifth reaches the seventh, and nothing in the seventh reaches the fifth by aspect at all. And four houses mean something to both at once: the eleventh, the ninth, the twelfth and the first. This article gives the geometry, a ten-house table counted from each, the exchange as the strongest join, the Navamsa’s version of both, the four charts the geometry makes, and a worked chart in which Saturn in the fifth reached the seventh by the one aspect that can.
It belongs to the complete relationship astrology guide. The two houses’ own pages are the fifth house and the seventh house, and their lords’ twelve placements are in the fifth lord in the twelve houses and the seventh lord in the twelve houses; the join between the two as the love-marriage signature is the earlier page, Love Marriage in the Chart, and this page is the geometry under it.
Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa; houses counted from the fifth and from the seventh by the derived-house method, bhavat bhavam, in which the nth house from a house is that house’s own nth matter; the special aspects of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn as the classical texts give them; the D9 Navamsa for the marriage layer. The fifth and seventh are read as two subjects and never as one, and the geometry is a description of how the two subjects meet, not a prediction about any relationship. Nothing here is a remedy.

Feeling and bond, and the exact geometry between them in your chart.
A relationship consultation reads your fifth and seventh as two houses, the join between them by lords, occupants and the one aspect that crosses, the four shared houses that decide where the two meet and where they lose each other, and the Navamsa's version of both, so that a romance and a bond are never mistaken for each other again.

Two subjects: what the fifth is and what the seventh is
The fifth house is the house of what the native enjoys and creates: children, intelligence, speculation, the arts, and romance, which in this list is the pleasure of another person, the feeling that arrives unbidden and is enjoyed for itself. It is a trikona, a house of fortune, and its matters come to the native as gifts rather than as work. The seventh is the house of the other: the partner, the spouse, the business associate, the open enemy, and the bond with any of them, which is a commitment that binds two people as equals. It is a kendra, a house of action, and its matters are made rather than received. The two are as different as a feeling and a contract, and a chart can have either without the other: the strong fifth with the weak seventh is the native who feels much and binds little, the serial romance; the strong seventh with the weak fifth is the native who binds well and feels little, the good arranged marriage. Most readings of love blur the two into one thing called a relationship, and the blur is the source of most of the wrong predictions in this subject, since the fifth’s activation is promised as a marriage and the seventh’s as a romance. The whole cluster rests on keeping them apart, and this page is where the keeping is made explicit.
Counted from each other: the third and the eleventh
Bhavat bhavam, the house from the house, says that the seventh counted from the fifth is the third, and the third is effort, courage, communication and initiative: the bond is the romance’s work, the thing the romance has to do rather than feel, the courage to say it and the effort to keep it. A romance that never reaches the seventh is a romance that never made its third-house effort, which is a reading of the romance rather than of the bond, and it explains the natives who feel deeply and never act. The fifth counted from the seventh is the eleventh, and the eleventh is gain, fulfilment, the wish granted: the romance is the bond’s reward, the pleasure the partnership wishes for and receives, which is why a marriage without romance feels like a partnership without its gain and why the romance inside a marriage returns in the eleventh lord’s sub-period more often than in the fifth’s. The two directions are not symmetrical. From the romance, the bond is work; from the bond, the romance is reward; and a couple who understand that the feeling has to be worked into a bond and that the bond then pays the feeling back has understood the geometry better than most readings do. The derived-house method itself, with its rules for rotating the chart, is set out in the page on rotating the chart.
No shared lord: why the join is always two planets
Two houses two signs apart are never ruled by the same planet, because no planet rules two signs two apart: Mars’s signs are seven apart, Venus’s five, Mercury’s three, Jupiter’s three, Saturn’s adjacent, and the Sun and Moon rule one each. So for every ascendant the fifth lord and the seventh lord are different planets, and the join between romance and bond is always a meeting of two: conjunction, mutual aspect, exchange, or one in the other’s house. This is not a technicality. It means the love marriage is never a single planet’s gift and always a relation, and it means the reading of the join is the reading of how two planets get on, which the planet pages have given: Venus and Jupiter, the fifth and seventh lords for Gemini, meet as attraction and sanction; Mercury and Mars, the fifth and seventh lords for Taurus, meet as words and desire; so that the join’s flavour is the two planets’ natures as much as their houses. The one-directional joins, in the fifth lord in the seventh and the seventh lord in the fifth, are the romance walking into the bond’s house and the bond walking into the romance’s, and they read differently for that reason: the first is a feeling that commits, the second a commitment that stays a feeling.
The one aspect that crosses: Saturn from the fifth
The special aspects decide which planets can reach across the two-house gap, and the answer is narrower than most readers expect. A planet in the fifth throws its full aspect on the eleventh, not the seventh; a planet in the seventh throws its full aspect on the first. Mars from the fifth aspects the eighth, eleventh and twelfth; Jupiter from the fifth aspects the ninth, eleventh and first; Saturn from the fifth aspects the seventh, the eleventh and the second, so Saturn’s third aspect is the only full aspect that crosses from the romance to the bond. From the seventh, Mars aspects the tenth, first and second, Jupiter the eleventh, first and third, Saturn the ninth, first and fourth: nothing in the seventh reaches the fifth at all. The consequence is a rule this cluster has used without stating: Saturn in the fifth is the one placement that makes a romance into a bond by aspect alone, slowly, the feeling held for years and then committed, which is the late-starter romance the commitment and no-love-life pages describe, in Saturn in the fifth; and a planet in the seventh, however strong, does nothing for the romance by aspect, so that a chart with Jupiter in the seventh and an empty, unaspected fifth has a fine bond and no feeling before it. The general rules of aspect are in the aspects guide, and the Rahu-Ketu axis, which is not an aspect but an opposition, sits across the fifth-eleventh or first-seventh pair rather than across the fifth and seventh, which is the karmic relationships page’s reading.
Four houses that belong to both: the 11th, the 9th, the 12th and the 1st
Four houses mean something to the fifth and the seventh at once, and they are where the two subjects meet and part. The eleventh is the seventh from the fifth and the fifth from the seventh: the romance’s own partner and the bond’s own romance, so that the eleventh is where the lover becomes a partner and where the spouse becomes a lover, which is why the eleventh house’s activation brings the friend who becomes more and the marriage that rediscovers its pleasure, read in the eleventh house and the fulfilment of love and in the fifth lord in the eleventh and the seventh lord in the eleventh. The ninth is the fifth from the fifth and the third from the seventh: the romance of the romance, its deepest form, and the bond’s courage and effort, so that the ninth is where a great love and a brave commitment both live, and the far, the sanctioned and the traditional enter both. The twelfth is the eighth from the fifth and the sixth from the seventh: the romance’s death and the bond’s quarrel and illness, the house that ends the feeling and sickens the partnership, which is why the twelfth lord’s sub-period ends relationships by two routes at once. And the first, the native, is the ninth from the fifth and the seventh from the seventh: the romance’s fortune and the partner’s partner, so that the native is what the romance is lucky in and what the spouse is bound to, and a strong lagna is the best thing either house can have. Four houses, four meanings each way, and a reading that has found the fifth and seventh sound and the relationship still failing looks at these next.
Ten houses counted from the fifth and from the seventh
| House | Counted from the 5th | Counted from the 7th | What it means for love and marriage |
|---|---|---|---|
| The 1st | The 9th: the romance’s fortune | The 7th: the partner’s partner | The native is what the feeling is lucky in and what the spouse is bound to |
| The 2nd | The 10th: the romance’s work and standing | The 8th: the bond’s crisis and depth | The family’s table: where a romance is made public and a marriage is transformed |
| The 3rd | The 11th: the romance’s gain | The 9th: the bond’s fortune and tradition | Communication pays the feeling and blesses the bond; the message and the sanction |
| The 4th | The 12th: the romance’s loss | The 10th: the bond’s standing | The home ends the private romance and gives the marriage its public place |
| The 6th | The 2nd: the romance’s speech and sustenance | The 12th: the bond’s loss | The quarrel feeds the feeling’s talk and empties the bond; the workplace romance and the marriage’s drain |
| The 8th | The 4th: the romance’s home | The 2nd: the bond’s family and wealth | Intimacy is where the feeling lives and where the marriage’s shared substance is |
| The 9th | The 5th: the romance of the romance | The 3rd: the bond’s courage | The great love and the brave commitment; the far and the sanctioned enter both |
| The 10th | The 6th: the romance’s quarrel | The 4th: the bond’s home | Work is where feeling is contested and where the marriage settles; the couple seen together |
| The 11th | The 7th: the romance’s partner | The 5th: the bond’s romance | Where the lover becomes a partner and the spouse becomes a lover; the friend, the wish, the gain |
| The 12th | The 8th: the romance’s death | The 6th: the bond’s quarrel and illness | The house that ends the feeling and sickens the partnership; the loss and the distance |
The fifth and seventh themselves are left off the table since each is the other’s third and eleventh, which the section above gives; the ten rows are the houses a reading turns to when both are sound and something is still wrong.
The exchange: the strongest join
The fifth lord in the seventh with the seventh lord in the fifth, the Parivartana, is the strongest join the two houses can make, because each house then holds the other’s ruler and neither can act without the other: the romance is in the bond’s keeping and the bond in the romance’s, and the native cannot feel without committing or commit without feeling. It is the placement behind the love marriage in almost every case, as the love-marriage page says, and its geometry is worth stating: the two lords have crossed the two-sign gap in opposite directions, so the exchange is the third and the eleventh made into one movement, the romance’s effort and the bond’s reward exchanged, which is why the exchange’s marriages are both worked at and enjoyed. Its weaker forms are the join by conjunction, in either house or elsewhere, in which the two lords meet but do not exchange houses; the join by mutual aspect, across the two-sign gap only possible when one lord is Saturn aspecting from the fifth or when the two lords are opposite each other elsewhere in the chart; and the one-way placements. The exchange’s one risk is the one every exchange has, that the two lords carry each other’s afflictions: a seventh lord in the fifth that is also the twelfth lord brings the twelfth’s loss into the romance, and the love-marriage page’s denial rules apply to the exchange as to any join.
The Navamsa’s fifth and seventh
The D9 has its own fifth and seventh, and they refine the birth chart’s in the way the Navamsa always does, by saying what the promise becomes in the marriage itself. The D9 seventh and its lord are the spouse’s nature and the marriage’s quality, read in the Navamsa marriage guide; the D9 fifth is the romance inside the marriage, the pleasure the bond keeps or loses. The geometry holds in the D9 as in the D1: the D9 seventh is the third from the D9 fifth, so the marriage’s commitment is the work of its romance, and a D9 with a strong seventh and a weak fifth is the marriage that is well kept and little enjoyed. The join in the D9, the D9 fifth and seventh lords connected, confirms a birth-chart join and gives the love marriage that settles; a D9 join without a birth-chart join is the arranged marriage that becomes a love, which the love-marriage page names. The birth-chart fifth lord’s position in the D9 says what the romance becomes once married, in the D9 seventh becoming the bond, in the D9 twelfth becoming a loss; and the birth-chart seventh lord’s position in the D9 fifth is the spouse who stays a romance. A reading of the two houses that has not opened the D9 has read the promise and not the marriage.
The four charts the geometry makes
The fifth and seventh, each strong or weak, make four kinds of chart, and the earlier pages have read each. Strong fifth, strong seventh, joined: the love marriage, the feeling that commits and the bond that enjoys, the chart the love-marriage page reads. Strong fifth, strong seventh, unjoined: the native who has a great love and a good marriage to different people, the romance lived in the fifth lord’s period and the bond made in the seventh lord’s, which the double-window page reads for the couple who want the two to be one person. Strong fifth, weak seventh: the serial romance, the fifth-house lover of the commitment page and the one-sided love of its own page, feeling without binding, whose bond comes late and in a sub-period that activates the seventh from outside. Weak fifth, strong seventh: the good arranged marriage, the no-love-life page’s silent fifth with the full seventh, binding without feeling, whose romance arrives inside the marriage in the eleventh lord’s sub-period, the bond’s gain. The four are not ranked; each is a life, and the reading’s use is to say which one the native has so that they stop waiting for the other, since the serial-romance native waiting for a great bond and the arranged-marriage native waiting for a great feeling are both waiting for a house their chart has put elsewhere, and both can be told where it is.
Reading order: the seventh before the fifth
A relationship reading reads the seventh before the fifth, whatever the native has asked about, because the seventh is a kendra and a commitment and decides the shape of a life, while the fifth is a trikona and a gift and decides its pleasure. The seventh lord’s dignity, placement and period give whether and when a bond forms; then the fifth’s give whether and when a feeling comes; then the join gives whether the two are the same event; then the four shared houses give where they meet and part; then the Navamsa gives what it all becomes. A reading that begins with the fifth, because the native asked about love, produces the commonest error in the subject, the romance promised as a marriage, and a reading that begins with the seventh and reaches the fifth second produces the sentence the native actually needs, which is usually one of the four charts above. The order also protects the reader from the fifth’s other meanings, since a strong fifth may be children or intelligence or speculation and not romance at all, and the seventh read first says whether the fifth’s strength is being spent on a person; the fifth house’s own page gives its whole range, and the Rahu and Ketu pages have shown how a node on either house changes the reading without changing the geometry.
A worked chart: Saturn in the fifth, reaching the seventh
A Taurus lagna woman, particulars altered. Saturn, lord of the ninth and tenth and the yogakaraka, sits in Virgo in the fifth: the romance house held by Saturn, the slow, undeclared feeling, and Saturn’s third aspect falling on Scorpio, her seventh, the one full aspect that crosses from the romance to the bond. Mars, lord of the seventh and twelfth, sits in Capricorn in the ninth, exalted: the bond’s lord in the ninth, which is the fifth from the fifth, the romance of the romance, and the third from the seventh, the bond’s courage; the bond’s own planet standing in the house both houses share. Mercury, lord of the second and fifth, sits in Cancer in the third, which is the eleventh from the fifth, the romance’s gain, and the ninth from the seventh, the bond’s fortune. Venus, the lagna lord and lord of the sixth, sits in Leo in the fourth, the twelfth from the fifth and the tenth from the seventh. The Sun, lord of the fourth, in Leo with Venus; Jupiter, lord of the eighth and eleventh, in Pisces in the eleventh, its own sign, the house both call their partner and romance; the Moon, lord of the third, in Scorpio in the seventh, debilitated, in the bond’s house; Rahu in Aries in the twelfth, Ketu in Libra in the sixth. The geometry: no direct join between the fifth and seventh lords, Mercury in the third and Mars in the ninth being opposite each other, which is the mutual aspect, the join at a distance; Saturn crossing from the fifth to the seventh by the one aspect; and the seventh lord in the house both houses share.
The reading of the two houses: a romance held slowly by Saturn, felt for years and undeclared, and a bond whose lord is exalted and courageous, standing in the ninth, so that the bond, when it came, would be brave and sanctioned and far, and the romance and the bond would meet at a distance and through the ninth, a journey or a teacher’s circle or another tradition, with Saturn’s aspect turning the slow feeling into the commitment by its own weight. She had loved a man from her postgraduate course, the ninth house, for four years without saying so, Saturn on the fifth exactly, and the reading, given in Saturn’s major period, in Saturn-Saturn, said: the feeling is Saturn’s and reaches the seventh by aspect, so this romance is one that becomes the bond, slowly; the bond’s lord is in the house both houses share, the ninth, and the two lords aspect each other across the chart, the join at a distance; it commits in Saturn-Mars, the seventh lord’s sub-period, with Jupiter transiting Scorpio, your seventh, and it is a marriage that is brave before it is easy. Saturn-Mercury, the fifth lord’s, was the declaration, in the third house’s way, a letter; Saturn-Ketu the year the ninth-house man went abroad and the feeling detached without ending; Saturn-Venus the lagna lord’s three years in which the romance became a correspondence across a distance, the bond’s fortune in the third; and Saturn-Sun and Saturn-Moon the return and the courage; and Saturn-Mars, the seventh lord’s, exalted in the ninth, was the marriage, in his country, with Jupiter in Scorpio, at thirty-four, a bond made brave and far and sanctioned by the ninth, out of a romance Saturn had held for a decade and reached across to the seventh with the only aspect that can. The romance’s work, the third from the fifth, had been ten years of it; and the bond’s reward, the eleventh from the seventh, was the Jupiter in the eleventh in its own sign, the pleasure the marriage kept.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the 5th house and the 7th house in astrology?
The fifth is romance, the feeling, the pleasure and the choice, a trikona whose matters come as gifts; the seventh is the bond, the partnership as a commitment between equals, a kendra whose matters are made. A chart can have either without the other: a strong fifth with a weak seventh is the serial romance, a strong seventh with a weak fifth the good arranged marriage. Most wrong predictions in this subject come from blurring the two into one thing called a relationship.
How are the 5th and 7th houses connected?
They are two signs apart, and by the derived-house method the seventh is the third from the fifth, so the bond is the romance’s effort and courage, while the fifth is the eleventh from the seventh, so the romance is the bond’s gain and reward. No planet rules both for any ascendant, so the join is always a meeting of two planets by conjunction, mutual aspect, exchange or one in the other’s house, and only Saturn’s third aspect from the fifth crosses from one house to the other.
Which houses affect both love and marriage?
The eleventh, which is the romance’s partner and the bond’s romance, where the lover becomes a partner and the spouse a lover; the ninth, the romance of the romance and the bond’s courage, where the great love and the brave commitment both live; the twelfth, the romance’s death and the bond’s quarrel, which ends the feeling and sickens the partnership; and the first, the native, who is the romance’s fortune and the partner’s partner. A reading that finds the fifth and seventh sound and a relationship still failing looks at these four.
Can a planet in the 7th house aspect the 5th house?
No. A planet in the seventh throws its full aspect on the first; Mars from the seventh reaches the tenth, first and second, Jupiter the eleventh, first and third, Saturn the ninth, first and fourth, and none of them reaches the fifth. From the fifth, only Saturn’s third aspect reaches the seventh. So Saturn in the fifth is the one placement that turns a romance into a bond by aspect alone, slowly, and a strong planet in the seventh does nothing for the romance by aspect.
What does the exchange between the 5th and 7th lords mean?
The strongest join the two houses can make: each house holds the other’s ruler, so the native cannot feel without committing or commit without feeling, and it is the placement behind the love marriage in almost every case. Its geometry is the third and the eleventh made into one movement, the romance’s effort and the bond’s reward exchanged, which is why the exchange’s marriages are both worked at and enjoyed. Its one risk is that the two lords carry each other’s afflictions, and the love-marriage denial rules apply to it as to any join.
What are the four types of chart the 5th and 7th houses make?
Both strong and joined, the love marriage; both strong and unjoined, the great love and the good marriage to different people, lived in different periods; a strong fifth with a weak seventh, the serial romance whose bond comes late and from outside; a weak fifth with a strong seventh, the good arranged marriage whose romance arrives inside it in the eleventh lord’s sub-period. They are not ranked; the reading’s use is to say which one the native has so that they stop waiting for the house their chart has put elsewhere.
Should the 5th or the 7th house be read first for relationships?
The seventh, whatever the native asked about, because it is a kendra and a commitment and decides the shape of a life, while the fifth is a gift and decides its pleasure; then the fifth, then the join, then the four shared houses, then the Navamsa. Beginning with the fifth produces the commonest error in the subject, the romance promised as a marriage, and it also risks reading a strong fifth as romance when its strength is being spent on children, intelligence or speculation instead.

Two houses, one geometry, and the sentence that says which of the four charts you have.
A relationship consultation reads your seventh before your fifth, the join between them and the one aspect that crosses, the four shared houses where feeling and bond meet and part, and the Navamsa's version of both, and tells you which of the four charts the geometry makes is yours and where the house you have been waiting for actually is.
