Reading the D2 Hora and D4 for Wealth: Worked Examples

The birth chart promises money and the divisional charts say what the promise is made of. The D2 hora divides every sign into two halves, the Sun’s and the Moon’s, and sorts every planet into one or the other, wealth that is earned against wealth that is received; the D4 Chaturthamsa divides every sign into four and says whether the money the birth chart promises becomes land, a home and fixed assets. Both are read beside the birth chart and never instead of it, which is the rule that most divisional-chart readings break. This article gives the two charts in their rules, the order in which the three are read together, and then three charts worked with their degrees shown, so that a reader with Jagannatha Hora open can follow every placement: a Libra lagna with strong money lords that the hora would not support, a Virgo lagna with a modest birth chart carried by the divisions, and a Capricorn lagna in which all three agree.

It belongs to the complete wealth astrology guide, and it is the last of its spokes because it assumes the others: the money planet from Which Planet Gives Wealth?, the promise from Wealth Yogas in the Kundli, and the timing from When Will I Become Rich?. The construction and full rules of the two divisions are on their own pages, the D2 hora guide and the D4 Chaturthamsa guide, and this page applies them.

Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, the Parashari D2 in which odd signs give their first fifteen degrees to the Sun’s hora and their second to the Moon’s and even signs the reverse, so that every planet in the D2 falls in Leo or Cancer; the Parashari D4 in which the four quarters of a sign fall in the sign itself and the fourth, seventh and tenth from it. Jagannatha Hora’s default settings for both. The D2 and D4 are read after the birth chart and never override it; money is tendency and timing, never figures, and nothing here is financial advice.

The two charts, and what each answers

The D2 hora answers one question about a chart’s money: what is it made of. The Sun’s hora is wealth earned, through authority, effort, position and the day’s work, the money that is made; the Moon’s hora is wealth received, through nurture, ease, the public and the family, the money that flows. A planet in the hora that suits its nature delivers its money in full and in its own way; a planet in the other hora delivers less and with strain, or through a channel foreign to it. The D2 does not say how much money there is, which is the birth chart’s second and eleventh, and it does not time anything; it says whether the promise the birth chart makes has the texture to be kept. The D4 answers a different question: does the money become fixed. Property, the home, land and the settled comforts are the D4’s subject, and a birth chart with a strong fourth and a weak D4 gives property that is bought and does not settle the native, while a modest fourth with a strong D4 gives the late purchase that becomes the family’s anchor. The property reading in its own right, with the D4 as its second opinion, is in When Will I Buy a House?.

The hora rule by planet

PlanetStrong inWhen in its own horaWhen in the other hora
SunThe Sun’s horaMoney through authority and position, earned and heldPosition without its pay; standing spent on
MarsThe Sun’s horaMoney through force, land and initiativeEffort that pays others; impulse without return
JupiterThe Sun’s horaMoney through judgment and reputation, keptGenerosity without accumulation; the adviser unpaid
MoonThe Moon’s horaMoney through the public, nurture and flow, receivedLiquidity that does not settle; income felt and not held
VenusThe Moon’s horaMoney through comfort, partnership and easeComfort that has to be earned; pleasure paid for twice
SaturnThe Moon’s hora, in most readingsSlow money that is received and kept; land through patienceLabour that builds for others; the delay without the reward
MercuryEitherTrade and calculation deliver in both halvesNot applicable; Mercury is at home in either

The assignment is Parashara’s: the Sun, Mars and Jupiter to the Sun’s hora, the Moon and Venus to the Moon’s, Mercury to either, and Saturn to the Moon’s in most readings of the text, with the tradition not unanimous on Saturn. Rahu and Ketu take the hora of their sign lord. A money lord in its own hora is the confirmation a wealth reading looks for; a money lord in the other hora is the reason a fine birth chart delivers less than it promised, which is the first example below.

The D4 in four lines

Each sign is divided into four quarters of seven and a half degrees; the first quarter falls in the sign itself, the second in the fourth sign from it, the third in the seventh, the fourth in the tenth, so that a planet at Taurus 20 degrees, in the third quarter, sits in Scorpio in the D4. The D4 lagna is read as the native’s relation to fixed assets, and its lord’s condition as whether property is held. The D4 fourth house and its lord are the home and land specifically, and benefics in the D4 kendras, the first, fourth, seventh and tenth, give property that settles the native, malefics there property with a burden. And the birth chart’s fourth lord carried into the D4 says whether the property the birth chart promises is confirmed: in a D4 kendra or trikona, in dignity, it is; in the D4 sixth, eighth or twelfth, or debilitated there, the property is bought and does not stay, or stays and does not comfort. The four lines are the whole of the D4 for money; the rest is in the D4 guide linked above.

The order of reading: D1, then D2, then D4

The birth chart first, always: the second and eleventh lords, their dignity and placement, their connection, the planets in the money houses, the twelfth as the leak, and the dasha table for the periods. That reading produces the promise and the timing, and it stands on its own. Then the D2: take the money lords and the money planet and note which hora each falls in, and note the D2 lagna’s hora as the native’s own relation to money, earned or received. A money lord in its own hora confirms the promise; in the other hora, the reading of that lord’s period is reduced, delivered with strain or through a foreign channel. Then the D4: take the fourth lord and the second lord and see where they fall, read the D4 lagna lord and the D4 fourth, and decide whether the money becomes property. The order matters because each chart refines the one before it and none of them replaces it; a reader who begins with the hora and finds Venus in the Moon’s hora has learned nothing until the birth chart has said what Venus rules and where it sits. The divisional charts in general, their construction and the family of them, are in the divisional charts guide.

The four questions a divisional reading settles

The three charts together answer four questions that the birth chart alone leaves open. Is the promise real, which the D2 answers by whether the money lords sit in their own horas. Is it earned or received, which the D2 lagna and the hora of the money planet answer, and which changes the practical advice, since the native whose money is received should not be told to build a business and the native whose money is earned should not wait for a legacy. Does it become property, which the D4 answers. And which period the divisions favour, which is read from the dasha table against the D2: a money lord’s period delivers in full when that lord is in its own hora and less when it is not, so that two natives with the same Venus period and the same Venus placement in the birth chart, one with Venus in the Moon’s hora and one in the Sun’s, spend the same twenty years differently. The four answers are the reason a wealth reading opens the divisions at all; a reading that opens them and does not ask these has opened them for show.

Example one: a Libra lagna with money lords the hora does not support

A Libra lagna at 12 degrees, particulars altered. Mars, lord of the second and seventh, at Scorpio 5 degrees, its own sign, in the second. The Sun, lord of the eleventh, at Leo 20 degrees, its own sign, in the eleventh, with Mercury, lord of the ninth and twelfth, at Leo 10 degrees. Venus, the lagna lord, at Virgo 25 degrees, debilitated, in the twelfth. Jupiter, lord of the third and sixth, at Cancer 22 degrees, exalted, in the tenth. Saturn, lord of the fourth and fifth and the yogakaraka, at Libra 4 degrees, exalted, in the lagna. The Moon, lord of the tenth, at Taurus 18 degrees, exalted, in the eighth. The birth chart’s money promise is strong: both money lords in their own signs in their own houses, a Sasa yoga in the lagna, an exalted Jupiter on the tenth. The reading from the birth chart alone would call this a wealthy chart.

The D2 says otherwise. Mars at Scorpio 5 degrees, an even sign, first half, falls in the Moon’s hora; the Sun at Leo 20 degrees, an odd sign, second half, falls in the Moon’s hora. Both money lords, male planets that need the Sun’s half, sit in the Moon’s: the money they promise is to be earned through force and authority, and the hora says it will be received rather than made, through the family and the public, and delivered with strain. Venus, the lagna lord, at Virgo 25 degrees, an even sign, second half, sits in the Sun’s hora, the wrong half for Venus and the wrong half for a debilitated lagna lord in the twelfth. The D2 lagna, Libra 12 degrees, first half of an odd sign, is the Sun’s hora, the native’s own relation to money being earning; but the earning planets are in the receiving half. The D4 lagna is Capricorn, from the second quarter of Libra; Saturn, the birth chart’s fourth lord, falls in Libra in the D4, the tenth house, exalted, so that the property side holds; Mars falls in Scorpio, the D4 eleventh, in its own sign. The reading: property will be held, and money will be smaller and slower than the birth chart promised, received through the family and the public rather than made by the native’s own force, and Mars’s and the Sun’s periods will deliver a modest version of two fine placements. He is a man with a good family business that he has never quite made his own, comfortable and frustrated, and the frustration is the hora.

Example two: a Virgo lagna carried by its divisions

A Virgo lagna at 20 degrees, particulars altered. Venus, lord of the second and ninth, at Scorpio 4 degrees, in the third. The Moon, lord of the eleventh, at Capricorn 6 degrees, in the fifth. Mercury, the lagna lord, at Libra 2 degrees, in the second, with the Sun, lord of the twelfth, at Libra 14 degrees, debilitated. Jupiter, lord of the fourth and seventh, at Aquarius 24 degrees, in the sixth, with Saturn, lord of the fifth and sixth, at Aquarius 10 degrees, in its own sign. Mars, lord of the third and eighth, at Sagittarius 28 degrees, in the fourth. The birth chart’s money promise is modest: the money lords in the third and fifth, neither dignified, no yoga between them, the fourth lord in the sixth, the lagna lord in the second as the one good placement. The reading from the birth chart alone would call this a comfortable chart at best.

The D2 carries it. Venus at Scorpio 4 degrees, an even sign, first half, sits in the Moon’s hora, its own; the Moon at Capricorn 6 degrees, even, first half, sits in the Moon’s hora, its own. Both money lords in the half that suits them: the money they promise, modest by placement, is confirmed by texture, received rather than earned, and delivered in full in their periods. Mercury at Libra 2 degrees, an odd sign, first half, is in the Sun’s hora, where Mercury is at home either way, and the Sun, the twelfth lord, at Libra 14 degrees, is in the Sun’s hora too, so that the leak of this chart is at least purposeful. The D4 lagna is Pisces, from the third quarter of Virgo, and its lord Jupiter falls in Scorpio in the D4, the ninth house, a trikona; Venus falls in Scorpio too, the D4 ninth, and the Moon in Capricorn, the D4 eleventh. The birth chart’s fourth lord, that Jupiter, sits in a D4 trikona, so that the property the birth chart’s fourth barely promises is confirmed by the D4, and the D4 fourth house, Gemini, has its lord Mercury in the D4 eighth, which says the property comes through others’ money, late. The reading: a modest chart whose money is real and received, through the family and the partner, arriving in full in Venus’s and the Moon’s periods, becoming property late and through an estate. She is a schoolteacher whose Venus period brought a marriage into a family with land, and whose Moon period, running now, has brought her share of it, and the birth chart alone would have missed both.

Example three: a Capricorn lagna in which all three agree

A Capricorn lagna at 5 degrees, particulars altered. Saturn, lord of the lagna and the second, at Capricorn 3 degrees, its own sign, in the lagna, with Mars, lord of the fourth and eleventh, at Capricorn 26 degrees, exalted: both money lords in the lagna in dignity, the Dhana yoga of the hardest pair, with Sasa and Ruchaka yogas. Venus, lord of the fifth and tenth and the yogakaraka, at Pisces 3 degrees, exalted, in the third, with Jupiter, lord of the third and twelfth, at Pisces 20 degrees, in its own sign. The Sun, lord of the eighth, at Aquarius 5 degrees, and Mercury, lord of the sixth and ninth, at Aquarius 2 degrees, in the second. The Moon, lord of the seventh, at Taurus 5 degrees, exalted, in the fifth. The birth chart’s money promise is as strong as the system makes: the reading from the birth chart alone would call this a wealthy chart, and it would be right.

The D2 agrees. Saturn at Capricorn 3 degrees, even, first half, in the Moon’s hora, where Saturn is read as strong; Mars at Capricorn 26 degrees, even, second half, in the Sun’s hora, its own. Both money lords in the halves that suit them. Venus at Pisces 3 degrees, even, first half, Moon’s hora, its own; Jupiter at Pisces 20 degrees, even, second half, Sun’s hora, its own; the Sun at Aquarius 5 degrees, odd, first half, Sun’s hora, its own; the Moon at Taurus 5 degrees, even, first half, Moon’s hora, its own. Every planet in its own hora, a chart in which the earning half and the receiving half are both supplied. The D4 agrees too. The D4 lagna is Capricorn, from the first quarter of the sign, and Saturn at Capricorn 3 degrees falls in Capricorn in the D4, the D4 lagna, in its own sign; Mars at Capricorn 26 degrees, the fourth quarter, falls in Libra, the D4 tenth; Venus at Pisces 3 degrees falls in Pisces, the D4 third, exalted; the Moon at Taurus 5 degrees falls in Taurus, the D4 fifth, exalted; the Sun and Mercury in Aquarius fall in the D4 second. The birth chart’s fourth lord, Mars, sits in the D4 tenth, a kendra, and the D4 lagna lord sits in the D4 lagna in its own sign. The reading: the money is real, made and received both, kept in the lagna, and fixed in property, and Saturn’s and Mars’s periods deliver it in full. He is a builder whose Mars period bought the land and whose Saturn period, running now, has put three generations’ worth of buildings on it, and the three charts said the same thing in three ways, which is what agreement looks like.

Reading the two charts in Jagannatha Hora

In Jagannatha Hora the D2 and D4 are two of the divisional charts shown beside the rashi chart, and for wealth the reading takes four steps at the screen. Open the D2 and note which of its two occupied signs, Leo for the Sun’s hora and Cancer for the Moon’s, each planet stands in, and check the money lords against the table above. Open the D4 and note the D4 lagna sign, the sign the birth chart’s fourth lord has moved to, and which quarter of the sign each money lord occupies, which the degree column of the rashi chart gives at a glance: below seven and a half is the first quarter, below fifteen the second, below twenty-two and a half the third, and above it the fourth. Check the birth chart’s fourth lord and second lord for their D4 house, kendra, trikona or dusthana. And confirm that the software is set to the Parashari hora, since Jagannatha Hora offers alternative hora schemes and the twelve-sign horas read differently from the two-sign one used here; the settings are described in the divisional charts in Jagannatha Hora guide. A planet near a quarter boundary, within a quarter of a degree, changes its D4 sign with a small correction of the birth time, which is the last of the three mistakes below.

Three mistakes in divisional wealth readings

The first mistake is reading the divisions instead of the birth chart: opening the D2, finding the money planet in its own hora, and calling the chart wealthy without having asked the birth chart what the planet rules and where it sits. The D2 confirms or denies a promise the birth chart makes; it makes no promise of its own, and a Venus in the Moon’s hora in a chart where Venus rules the twelfth is a purposeful spender, not a wealthy native. The second mistake is reading the D4 as a second birth chart, with its own yogas and its own dasha, when it is a chart of one subject, fixed assets, and its houses are read for that subject only; a D4 with three planets in its second house says nothing about speech or family and something about property. The third mistake is trusting the divisions on an uncertain birth time. The D2 changes at every fifteen degrees of the ascendant and of every planet, which is about an hour of birth time for the lagna, and the D4 at every seven and a half, about half an hour; a chart whose birth time is uncertain by that much has a D2 and D4 that may belong to a different native, and the honest reading either rectifies the time first or reads the birth chart alone. The rectification method is set out in the birth time rectification guide.

Where the divisions stop

The D2 and D4 refine and do not replace; they answer their four questions and no others, and a reading that has found the money lords in their own horas and the fourth lord in a D4 kendra still has to go back to the birth chart for the periods, the capacity and the leak, which the divisions do not carry. They depend on the birth time more than the birth chart does, and the examples above assume times that have been checked. They are read in the Parashari scheme here and other schemes exist, which give different answers and are not mixed with these. And they say nothing about figures or about any decision, since nothing in this cluster does. What they add, when the birth time is sound and the birth chart has been read first, is the difference between a promise and a promise with texture and a place to settle, which is the difference between the first example and the third, and the reason the cluster ends here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read the hora chart for wealth?

Read the birth chart first for the money lords, their placement and the periods. Then note which hora each money lord falls in: the Sun’s for the first fifteen degrees of odd signs and the second fifteen of even signs, the Moon’s for the rest, so that in the D2 every planet stands in Leo or Cancer. The Sun, Mars and Jupiter are strong in the Sun’s hora, the Moon and Venus in the Moon’s, Saturn in the Moon’s in most readings, Mercury in either. A money lord in its own hora confirms the promise; in the other hora it delivers less and with strain.

What does the D2 chart tell about money?

What the money is made of: the Sun’s hora is wealth earned, through authority, effort and position, and the Moon’s is wealth received, through nurture, ease, the family and the public. It says whether a birth-chart promise has the texture to be kept and whether the native’s money is made or flows, which changes the practical advice; it does not say how much money there is, which is the birth chart’s second and eleventh, and it does not time anything.

What does the D4 chart tell about wealth?

Whether the money becomes fixed: property, the home, land and settled comforts. The D4 lagna lord’s condition says whether property is held, the D4 fourth house and its lord give the home and land specifically, benefics in the D4 kendras give property that settles the native, and the birth chart’s fourth lord carried into a D4 kendra or trikona confirms the property the birth chart promises, while in a D4 dusthana it gives property that is bought and does not stay.

Should the D2 and D4 be read before the birth chart?

Never. The birth chart makes the promise and gives the timing; the D2 says what the promise is made of and the D4 whether it becomes property, and neither makes a promise of its own. A Venus in the Moon’s hora in a chart where Venus rules the twelfth is a purposeful spender, not a wealthy native, and a reader who begins with the divisions has learned nothing until the birth chart has said what the planet rules and where it sits.

Which planets are strong in the Sun’s hora and the Moon’s hora?

Parashara assigns the Sun, Mars and Jupiter to the Sun’s hora and the Moon and Venus to the Moon’s, with Mercury at home in either and Saturn in the Moon’s in most readings of the text, the tradition not being unanimous on Saturn. Rahu and Ketu take the hora of their sign lord. A planet in the hora that suits it delivers its money in full and in its own way; in the other hora it delivers less, or through a channel foreign to it.

Why does a strong birth chart give less money than expected?

Often because the money lords, strong by sign and house in the birth chart, sit in the wrong hora, so that the promise is real and its texture is missing: the money to be earned through force is received instead, with strain and in smaller measure. The first worked example on this page is such a chart, both money lords in their own signs in their own houses and both in the Moon’s hora, comfortable and frustrated. The other usual reasons are the dasha, the bindus and the leak, read elsewhere in this cluster.

Does the D4 change with a small error in birth time?

Yes; the D4 sign of the lagna and of every planet changes every seven and a half degrees, which is about half an hour of birth time for the lagna, and the D2 every fifteen degrees, about an hour. A planet within a quarter of a degree of a boundary changes its D4 sign with a small correction of the time, and a chart whose birth time is uncertain by that much has divisions that may belong to a different native. The honest reading rectifies the time first or reads the birth chart alone.
