Which planet buys which kind of vehicle
The planet that leads the fourth, or whose period is running at the purchase, decides the kind. A Mars purchase is a two-wheeler or a car chosen for power, red more often than the buyer admits; a Mercury purchase is the small car, practical, replaced every few years; a Venus purchase is the comfortable one, chosen for the interior and the way it looks outside the house; a Jupiter purchase is the large one, the seven-seater, the car for the family and the pilgrimage; a Saturn purchase is the used one, the commercial one, or the one that will be driven for fifteen years; a Rahu purchase is the imported one, the brand the neighbourhood has not seen, bought a little before it was affordable; a Moon purchase is the car for the mother and the household. The kind matters to the reading because the native whose fourth is led by Saturn and who buys a Rahu car is unhappy with it, and because the reading can say, before the showroom, which kind the chart will be content with.
Timing: the sub-periods that buy, and the month
Vehicles arrive in Venus’s periods, in the fourth lord’s, and in those of any planet occupying the fourth, and the sub-period gives the year. Paired with a money lord it is the car paid for from savings; paired with the sixth lord, the car on instalments; paired with Venus, the comfortable one; paired with Mars, the motorcycle or the car chosen for speed. Because a vehicle is a smaller purchase than a house it also arrives in sub-periods that would be too weak for property, a Venus sub-period inside any major period being enough for the ordinary car, which is why most natives buy a vehicle more often than the fourth lord’s own periods would allow. The transit gives the month. Jupiter over the fourth is the year of the family car; Venus’s transit over the fourth or the fourth lord, about a month in each sign, is the month the vehicle is bought in more often than any other; and Mars over the fourth is the month of the two-wheeler and of the impulse purchase. A vehicle bought under Saturn’s transit over the fourth tends to be the one bought from necessity, the old one having failed, and it should be bought for durability rather than pleasure.
The loan behind the vehicle
Most vehicles are financed, and the vehicle loan is the sixth house serving the fourth with Venus rather than Saturn as its planet, which makes it shorter and lighter than the mortgage and more easily taken in the wrong period. The purchase in a fourth-lord or Venus sub-period with the sixth lord as the major period is the classical financed car, and it is sound when the second lord can service it. The purchase in a sixth-lord sub-period on a loan the eleventh cannot support is the car that is repossessed, and the reading says, before the sanction, whether the chart is in a season of borrowing easily and repaying hard. The rule from the debt article applies: no new borrowing in sixth-lord sub-periods whatever the offer, and the vehicle loan taken in one is the one the native regrets.
The company car and the vehicle abroad
The fourth lord in the tenth, or the tenth lord in the fourth, gives the vehicle that comes with the job, the company car, the official vehicle, and the native who is driven rather than drives; its periods are the tenth lord’s, and it is lost with the position. The fourth lord in the twelfth gives the vehicle abroad, bought in the foreign country and left there, and in its other sense the vehicle lost, stolen, or written off; the twelfth lord in the fourth is the same reading from the other direction. Ketu in the fourth gives the native who does not care to own one, who walks, takes the train, and keeps the old scooter until it stops, and who is not unhappy about it, which is worth saying to the family who think it a lack.
Periods for extra care on the road
The chart marks stretches in which the ordinary care of driving deserves more attention, and it marks them the way a doctor marks a season: as vulnerability, not as prediction. They are Mars’s transit over the fourth or the eighth, a few weeks at a time; Saturn’s transit over the fourth, eighth or the natal Mars; the sub-periods of the eighth lord when it is afflicted and connected to the fourth or to Mars; Rahu’s transit over the fourth or eighth; and the eclipses that fall on the natal Mars or the fourth. A chart with Mars afflicted in the fourth or eighth, or the fourth lord afflicted by Mars and Saturn together, is one whose native should treat these stretches seriously, avoid night driving in them, and keep the vehicle serviced; a chart with Mars dignified and the fourth clean can note them and drive. Nothing in the chart predicts an accident, and a reading that says otherwise has left the method. What the chart offers is the calendar of the months in which the margin for error is thinner, and that is useful exactly to the extent that the native drives more carefully in them.
The D16 Shodasamsa read for vehicles
The Shodasamsa, the sixteenth divisional chart, is the chart of vehicles and comforts, and a reading of a large vehicle purchase opens it beside the rashi chart. A strong D16 lagna, Venus dignified in the D16, and the fourth lord of the birth chart comfortably placed when carried into the D16 confirm the promise; benefics in the D16 fourth give the vehicle that brings the comfort it promised; malefics there, Mars and Saturn in particular, give the vehicle with repairs and trouble attached, and the reading of the care periods above is taken more seriously in such a chart. A fine rashi fourth with a weak D16 gives the car that is bought and does not satisfy; a modest rashi fourth with a strong D16 gives the native who is always comfortably driven whatever they own. A worked chart: three cars in one Saturn period
A Libra lagna chart, particulars altered. Saturn, lord of the fourth and fifth and the yogakaraka, is exalted in Libra in the lagna with Venus, the lagna lord in its own sign: the fourth lord and the vehicle significator together in dignity in the ascendant, the first row of the table in its strongest form, and Malavya yoga with it. Mars, lord of the second and seventh, is exalted in Capricorn in the fourth: the engine in the house of vehicles, and the second lord there to pay. Jupiter, lord of the third and sixth, occupies its own sign Sagittarius in the third, with Ketu beside it. The Sun, lord of the eleventh, and Mercury, lord of the ninth and twelfth, sit in Scorpio in the second. The Moon, lord of the tenth, is in Taurus in the eighth. Rahu is in Gemini in the ninth.
Read the vehicle signatures. Fourth lord with Venus in dignity: good vehicles, early and often. Saturn’s major period, the exalted fourth lord’s, ran from his twenty-seventh year to his forty-sixth, and the vehicles arrived in its sub-periods. Saturn-Venus, the lagna lord with the fourth lord, was the first car, a comfortable one bought in his own name in the month Venus transited Capricorn, his fourth; the two-wheeler had come earlier, in a Mars sub-period of the previous major period, as Mars in the fourth reads. Saturn-Mars, the exalted second lord in the fourth, was the larger and faster car, bought outright from savings, and the one month in the whole period that the reading had marked for care, Mars transiting his fourth over its own exalted natal position, brought a collision in which only the car was damaged, which he mentions now as the month he drove slowly for the first time in his life.
