Some people earn well all their lives and are never out of trouble. The salary is decent, the business turns over, and at the end of every year there is less than there should be and a reason for it that was nobody’s fault. The chart shows why, and it shows it in a small number of placements that a wealth reading checks before it looks at a single yoga: the money lords in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, the twelfth lord sitting on the second, Ketu or an afflicted Saturn on the money houses, a Moon that cannot hold what it receives. This article is about that shape, how to tell it from a bad period and from a habit, which placements leak and what each leaks through, and what, in the chart’s own terms, helps.
It belongs to the complete wealth astrology guide, and it is the reverse of Wealth Yogas in the Kundli: the denials that sit against the promises. The seasons of loss, as distinct from the structure of it, are in Financial Loss Periods.
Conventions used. Parashari astrology, whole-sign houses, Lahiri ayanamsa, Vimshottari dasha. Money problems are read as structure, period and habit, and the chart is used to name which is operating and when it eases. Nothing on this page is financial advice, and nothing on it is fatalistic: a leak in the chart is a tendency to be managed, and the management is part of the reading.

Chart, period or habit: the diagnostic
Money trouble comes from three places and the reading separates them first. If the trouble is new, after years in which money behaved, it is a period: a sub-period of the twelfth, eighth or sixth lord, Saturn’s transit over the second or eleventh, Rahu on the money houses, and it has a start date and an end date the chart gives. If the trouble has been lifelong, present in every period whatever the income, it is the chart: the placements below, and the response is management rather than waiting. And if the chart is clean and the periods are ordinary and the trouble persists, it is a habit, which the chart also shows, usually through the Moon and the fifth house, and which no period will fix. Most consultations are a mixture, a structural leak that a bad period has widened, and the reading that names both tells the native which part will pass and which part they will carry into the next period unless they change how they handle it.
The money lords in the sixth, eighth and twelfth
The second lord in the sixth gives money that goes to debt and to the daily struggle, earned and immediately owed. In the eighth it gives wealth that depends on others and on the unexpected, the family money that is never quite the native’s, the savings that a crisis takes; and in the twelfth it gives savings that are spent, given, or held abroad, the classical placement of the person who cannot accumulate. The eleventh lord in the sixth gives gains through service and debt, income that arrives with obligations attached; in the eighth, gains that come and reverse; in the twelfth, gains dispersed, the income that flows out as fast as in, which is one of the forms of Daridra yoga. These six placements are not a sentence. A second lord in the twelfth with dignity gives the native who saves abroad and comes home wealthy; an eleventh lord in the eighth in dignity gives gains through inheritance and insurance. But without dignity they are the structural leaks, and they are read house by house in the second lord in the twelve houses and the eleventh lord in the twelve houses.
The twelfth lord on the second: the leak in the wall
Of all the placements on this page, the twelfth lord in the second is the one most often behind the chart of the good earner who keeps nothing. The house of expense sits inside the house of savings, and whatever the second receives, the twelfth spends: on the home, on the foreign, on hospitals, on giving, on the thing that always comes up. Its nature says where the money goes; a twelfth-lord Venus on the second spends on comfort and others, a twelfth-lord Saturn on obligations, a twelfth-lord Mercury on paper and schemes. The twelfth lord in the eleventh is the same leak on the income side, gains that disperse before they are counted. Which planet is the twelfth lord is fixed by the ascendant, and the leak for each lagna is named in Wealth by Ascendant. The management is the same in every case: the native with this placement has to build the wall the chart did not, by putting money where the twelfth cannot reach it before the twelfth reaches it, which is the whole of the practical advice in Why Can’t I Save Money?.
Ketu, Saturn and Rahu on the money houses
Ketu in the second gives the native who does not hold savings and does not mind, detached from accumulation, generous, and periodically broke without distress; Ketu in the eleventh gives gains that come without being sought and go without grief. Saturn on the second gives lean years and slow accumulation, and it is a problem only when Saturn is afflicted, debilitated or combust, in which case the leanness does not end; Saturn on the eleventh, similarly, delays gains and does not deny them unless afflicted. Rahu on the second gives money that arrives strangely and leaves the same way, and Rahu on the eleventh the surge and the reversal; both are problems only when the second lord cannot hold what they bring. The commonest of these in trouble charts is the afflicted Saturn on the second, because it combines the leanness with the sense that nothing will ever change, which is the part the reading can correct: an afflicted Saturn on the second is a slow chart, not a denied one, and its periods after forty are usually the good ones.
The Moon and money: the mind that cannot hold
The Moon is liquidity and it is also the mind, and an afflicted Moon is behind more money trouble than any placement of the money lords, because it governs how the native handles what they have. The Moon with Saturn gives the fear that spends on security; with Rahu the appetite that spends on more; with Ketu the indifference that does not track; with Mars the impulse. A debilitated Moon in a money house gives the income that fluctuates with the mood, and the Moon in the twelfth or the eighth gives the emotional expense, the money that goes on the crisis of the month. The reading of the Moon here is the reading of the habit, and it is the part of the diagnostic that does not wait for a period: a native who knows that their Moon spends on fear or on appetite can arrange the money so that the Moon does not get to decide, and that arrangement is worth more than any relief window.
Eight placements that leak, and what each leaks through
| Placement | How the problem shows | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd lord in the 12th | Savings spent, given, or held abroad; nothing accumulates | Assets that cannot be spent easily; the foreign as a place to keep, not lose |
| 2nd lord in the 8th | Money depends on others; a crisis takes the savings | Own name on what is owned; insurance in the plain sense |
| 2nd lord in the 6th | Earned and immediately owed; debt as a way of life | Clearing the smallest debt first; no new borrowing in 6th-lord periods |
| 11th lord in the 12th | Income disperses before it is counted | Income routed to a place the 12th does not reach |
| 12th lord in the 2nd | Expense sits inside savings; the thing always comes up | A wall built before the money arrives |
| Ketu in the 2nd | Detached from accumulation; periodically broke, rarely distressed | Someone else keeping the accounts |
| Afflicted Saturn in the 2nd | Lean years that feel permanent | Patience with a date on it: the periods after forty |
| Afflicted Moon in a money house | Income and spending follow the mood | Arrangements that take the decision away from the mood |
“What helps” is the chart’s practical side, the response the placement’s nature suggests; it is not financial advice and it is not a remedy in the ritual sense. It is the part of a wealth reading that the native can act on the same week.
Daridra yoga against Saturn’s lean years
Two things look alike from inside and read differently. Daridra yoga, the combinations of the eleventh lord and the money houses with the dusthanas that the texts describe as deprivation, is a structural denial: the money channel routed through loss, and its periods bring loss whatever the income. Its full conditions, and the partial forms that are far commoner than the full one, are in the Daridra yoga guide. Saturn’s lean years, Saturn on the second or eleventh or a Saturn period early in life, are a delay: the money channel intact and slow, with the accumulation arriving after thirty-six and lasting. The native cannot tell them apart by how they feel, and the reading can, by looking at whether the money lords themselves are afflicted or merely slowed. A Daridra chart needs management for life; a Saturn chart needs patience with a date on it, and telling a Saturn native they have a Daridra yoga is one of the more damaging mistakes in this branch of the subject.
Debt as the sixth house
Debt is the sixth house, and a money-problem chart usually has the sixth involved somewhere: the sixth lord on the second or eleventh, income that arrives as loans; the second lord in the sixth, savings that service debt; Mars or Rahu in the sixth, the loan taken in haste. The sixth-lord sub-periods are when borrowing is easiest and most dangerous, and the reading marks them as the periods in which no new debt should be taken whatever the offer. The full reading of loans, repayment and the periods in which debt clears is in Debt in the Chart; here the point is only that the sixth is part of the structure, and a chart with a leak and a strong sixth is a chart in which the leak is financed.
The relief windows
Structural leaks do not close, but they narrow in the periods of the planets that hold. The second lord’s own period, whatever its placement, is the time in which the native accumulates most against the leak; the period of a dignified planet aspecting the second, Jupiter above all, is the second window; and Jupiter’s transit over the second and the eleventh gives each year inside those periods its best months. Saturn’s transit over the fourth and the eighth, oddly, often helps a leak chart, because it fixes what money there is in property and clears the unexpected before it arrives. The reading of a money-problem chart therefore ends with dates: the sub-periods in which the native should push accumulation because the chart is helping, and the ones in which the twelfth lord or the sixth lord is running and the only aim is to hold. A chart with no relief window in the next ten years is rarer than the native fears, and when it occurs the reading says so and turns to management. The general timing of money, of which these windows are the defensive side, is in When Will I Become Rich?.
What the chart says actually helps
The chart’s practical side has four parts and none of them is a gemstone. First, put the money where the leak cannot reach it: the placement names the leak, and assets of the kind the leaking planet cannot spend, land for a Venus leak, a locked instrument for a Mercury leak, are the wall the chart did not build. Second, keep the sixth quiet: no new borrowing in sixth-lord and twelfth-lord sub-periods, and the smallest debt cleared first, which changes the sixth house’s habit of feeding the leak. Third, take the Moon out of the decision: whatever the Moon’s affliction, arrangements made in a calm month that run without the mood’s approval are the answer to the habit half of the diagnostic. Fourth, use the relief windows for accumulation and the leak windows for holding, which is the timing half. Remedies of the traditional kind are a separate matter, and this site’s position on them, that they support the native’s effort and never replace it, is set out in the honest remedies guide; the four parts above are what a wealth reading recommends because they follow from the placements themselves.
A worked chart: a good earner who kept nothing
A Virgo lagna chart, particulars altered. Venus, lord of the second and ninth, is debilitated in Virgo in the lagna with Rahu. Mars, lord of the third and eighth, is in Aries, its own sign, in the eighth. The Moon, lord of the eleventh, sits in Leo in the twelfth. The Sun, lord of the twelfth, is debilitated in Libra in the second, with Mercury, lord of the lagna and tenth. Saturn, lord of the fifth and sixth, is in Cancer in the eleventh. Jupiter, lord of the fourth and seventh, is debilitated in Capricorn in the fifth. Ketu is in Pisces in the seventh.
Run the diagnostic. The chart, not the period: the second lord debilitated in the lagna with Rahu, the eleventh lord in the twelfth, the twelfth lord on the second, the sixth lord on the eleventh, and the eighth lord in its own house ready to take what the others let through. Four leaks in one chart, and a partial Daridra form in the eleventh lord’s placement. The earning is real, the lagna and tenth lord on the second gives income from work and a good salary, and every rupee of it has three exits: the weak second lord cannot hold, the twelfth disperses the gains, and the sixth lord on the eleventh means the gains arrive as loans. The habit half: the Moon in the twelfth, the emotional expense, the money that goes on the crisis of the month. He came at forty-two, a well-paid engineer with two loans and no savings, convinced he was cursed.
The reading said he was not cursed and was leaking, and named the exits. Venus’s major period, the second lord’s, had run through his twenties and thirties, and it had delivered exactly what a debilitated second lord with Rahu delivers: money that came in surges and went in the family’s crises, the eighth lord in its own house collecting them, a father’s illness, a brother’s business, a wedding. The sixth lord’s sub-periods inside it were the two loans. The Sun’s period, the twelfth lord’s on the second, was running, six years in which expense sat inside savings, and the reading marked it as a holding period, no new debt, the smaller loan cleared first. The Moon’s period from forty-eight, the eleventh lord in the twelfth, would disperse gains unless routed, and the reading said where to route them, into property in his own name, which the debilitated second lord had never managed. Mercury’s period, the lagna and tenth lord on the second, from fifty-eight, was the relief window, the one planet on the money house that held. He had been told by two readers that Daridra yoga was his fate. It was a leak, four exits and a Moon, and by the end of the Sun’s period the smaller loan was gone and the first plot was in his name, in the year Jupiter transited his second house, as the reading had said to aim for.
Frequently asked questions
Which planet causes financial problems?
Not a planet by itself but placements: the lords of the second and eleventh in the sixth, eighth or twelfth, the twelfth lord sitting on the second or eleventh, Ketu or an afflicted Saturn on the money houses, Rahu on a money house with a weak second lord, and an afflicted Moon in a money house, which governs the habit rather than the structure. Saturn alone on the second gives lean years, not loss, and its periods after forty are usually the good ones.
Why does money never stay with me?
Because the chart has a leak, and the commonest one is the twelfth lord sitting in the second, the house of expense inside the house of savings, so that whatever arrives is spent on the thing that always comes up. The second lord in the twelfth, the eleventh lord in the twelfth and Ketu on the second are the other three. The management is to put money where the leaking planet cannot reach it before it reaches it.
Is there a poverty yoga in the kundli?
Daridra yoga, the eleventh lord and the money houses routed through the sixth, eighth and twelfth, is the classical combination for deprivation, and its full form is rare while partial forms are common. It is a structural denial, different from Saturn’s lean years, which are a delay with an end date. Telling a native with a slow Saturn chart that they have Daridra yoga is a damaging mistake, and the reading separates the two by whether the money lords are afflicted or merely slowed.
How do I know if my money problem is my chart or my period?
Ask whether it is new. Trouble after years of money behaving is a period, a sub-period of the twelfth, eighth or sixth lord or Saturn’s transit over the second or eleventh, with a start and an end date. Trouble that has been present in every period whatever the income is the chart, and the response is management. Trouble with a clean chart and ordinary periods is a habit, read from the Moon and the fifth house. Most cases are a structural leak that a bad period has widened.
Which house is responsible for financial problems?
The twelfth, the house of expense and loss, when its lord touches the second or eleventh; the eighth, the house of the unexpected, when a money lord sits in it; and the sixth, the house of debt, when its lord touches the money houses or a money lord sits in it. The second and eleventh themselves cause trouble only when their lords are placed in those three houses or afflicted there.
Does Saturn cause money problems?
Saturn on the second or eleventh gives lean years and slow accumulation, and that is a delay rather than a denial: the money channel is intact and the accumulation arrives after thirty-six and lasts. Saturn causes loss only when it is afflicted, debilitated or combust on a money house, or when it rules the twelfth for the ascendant and sits on the second. Saturn’s transit over the second is a two-and-a-half-year squeeze, not a structural problem.
What helps money problems according to the chart?
Four things that follow from the placements: putting money in assets the leaking planet cannot spend, before it arrives; no new borrowing in sixth-lord and twelfth-lord sub-periods and the smallest debt cleared first; arrangements that take the spending decision away from an afflicted Moon; and using the second lord’s periods and Jupiter’s transit over the second for accumulation while holding in the leak periods. Traditional remedies support the native’s effort and do not replace it.

A leak has a placement, a period and a fix. Which is yours?
A one-to-one consultation runs the diagnostic on your chart, names the placements the money leaves through and the habit the Moon adds, and marks in your dasha table the periods to hold and the windows to accumulate.
