Ask which planet gives wealth and every book answers Jupiter, and every book is right about the principle and wrong about most charts. Jupiter is the dhanakaraka, the natural significator of wealth, the planet of abundance and increase, and in a chart where it rules or occupies the money houses it is the planet the money comes through. In the other charts, which are most of them, the money comes through whichever planet holds the second and eleventh houses, and the exalted Jupiter sitting in the third does something else entirely. This article is about telling the two apart: what each of the nine planets means for money by nature, and the test that finds the one planet in a given chart that actually carries it.

Money is read as tendency and timing, never as figures, and nothing on this page is investment, trading or lending advice. The second house is what is kept, the eleventh what is gained, and a planet is called the money planet only when the chart, not the textbook, says so.

The money planets by nature
Four planets carry money by their nature. Jupiter is abundance: wealth as increase, the fortune that grows because the native is trusted and generous, the money of teachers, advisers, bankers and anyone paid for judgment. Venus is wealth enjoyed: comfort, luxury, the money that comes through beauty, pleasure and the things people pay to feel good. Mercury is money moved: trade, calculation, commerce, the profit between buying and selling, the fee for a skill. The Moon is liquidity: cash rather than assets, the public’s money, the flow that rises and falls with the tide of a business or a career. The other five carry money in their own ways, which the table below sets out, but a chart with none of these four connected to the money houses is a chart in which wealth, if it comes, comes slowly and through work.
The four-step test that finds your money planet
The textbook names Jupiter. The chart names its own planet, and it is found in four steps. First, the lord of the second house: the planet that rules what is kept, the savings, the accumulated wealth, the family’s money; the placements of that lord are worked through in the second lord in the twelve houses. Second, the lord of the eleventh: the planet that rules what is gained, income, returns, the network that money comes through; those placements are in the eleventh lord in the twelve houses. Third, the strongest planet occupying the second or the eleventh, since an occupant of a money house delivers that house’s results in its own periods. Fourth, the evidence: the planet whose major or sub-period coincided with the years in which the native’s money actually changed, upward or downward.
The planet that appears twice in the four answers is the money planet. A second lord that also occupies the eleventh, an eleventh lord whose period brought the first real income, a Venus that rules the second and sits in the eleventh: these are the charts in which the question has a clean answer. When the four answers name four different planets, the chart’s money is divided among them, and each delivers its share in its own period, which is a different reading and an ordinary one.

The table describes the planet’s nature. Which of the nine is the money planet of a particular chart is decided by the test above, and a Saturn that rules the second and eleventh for an Aquarius lagna is a better money planet in that chart than a Jupiter that rules the eighth.
Jupiter: the dhanakaraka and when it is not the money planet
Jupiter is the natural significator because abundance is its nature, and in any chart a strong Jupiter is a general blessing on the money houses whatever it rules. Its periods bring increase, its transit over the second and eleventh is the classical season of gain, and its aspect on the second lord or the eleventh protects what they give. But Jupiter also rules two houses in every chart, and for several ascendants those houses are not the money houses. For Scorpio and Aquarius lagnas Jupiter rules the second or the eleventh and is the money planet by lordship as well as by nature; for Taurus it rules the eighth and eleventh, gains with a shadow; for Libra it rules the third and sixth, for Cancer the sixth and ninth, for Leo the fifth and eighth. In those charts an exalted Jupiter gives wisdom, children, faith and fortune of other kinds, and the money still comes through the second and eleventh lords. The commonest disappointment in wealth readings is the chart with a magnificent Jupiter and modest means, and the explanation is always the same: the dhanakaraka was not the money planet, and nobody checked the lords. Venus, Mercury and the Moon: money that flows
Venus makes money the way water finds a level, through comfort and other people. A Venus ruling or occupying the second or eleventh gives wealth that arrives with a marriage, a partnership, a talent for beauty or a taste the market shares, and it gives the native the enjoyment of money as much as the money; its risk is that the same pleasures spend it. Mercury makes money in pieces: the trade, the commission, the fee, the margin, repeated until it is a fortune, and a Mercury money planet gives the chart of the merchant and the professional whose wealth nobody saw accumulate; its risk is scatter, money in many places and none of it kept. The Moon is liquidity, and a Moon money planet gives cash flow, the shop, the restaurant, the trade in things people need daily, and popularity that turns into income; its risk is the tide, the feast and famine of a business that depends on the public’s mood. These three deliver in their own periods and in their transits over the money houses, and they deliver fastest of the nine.
Saturn, Mars and the Sun: money that is built
Saturn’s money is late and lasts. A Saturn money planet, which it is by lordship for Sagittarius and Capricorn lagnas, where Saturn rules the second, for Aries and Pisces, where it rules the eleventh, and for anyone with Saturn on the second or eleventh, gives wealth built through labour, land, long service and institutions, arriving after thirty-five and rarely leaving; the price is the years before it, which are lean. Mars makes money by taking it: property, engineering, the courage to start and the force to hold, wealth in bursts, and a Mars money planet gives the chart of the builder and the person who bought land when nobody else would; the price is the impulse that loses in one deal what three deals made. The Sun’s money is position: salary, authority, the state’s pay, gold, the father’s standing, and a Sun money planet gives wealth that arrives as rank and disappears with it; the price is the status the native spends to keep looking like the rank. Rahu and Ketu: money that arrives and leaves
Rahu is the fortune nobody predicted: foreign income, speculation, the new industry, the deal that made more in a year than the family had in a generation, and a Rahu on the second or eleventh, or a Rahu period, is the classical setting for sudden wealth. It is also the classical setting for sudden loss, because Rahu’s money leaves the way it came, and the honest reading of a Rahu fortune says to convert it into Saturn’s kind, land and institutions, while it is there. Ketu does not make money; it releases it. Ketu on the second gives the native who cannot hold savings and does not mind, Ketu on the eleventh the gains that come without wanting and go without grief, and a Ketu period is when money leaves for a reason that later looks wise. Dignity, house and dasha: when the money planet delivers
Finding the money planet is the first half; the second is whether it can deliver. A money planet in dignity, its own sign, exaltation or a friend’s sign, delivers its nature in full; debilitated or combust it delivers late, less, or through a cancellation. A money planet in a kendra or trikona delivers openly; in the sixth, eighth or twelfth it delivers through debt, inheritance or foreign lands, or it delivers to someone else. A money planet in the D2 hora placed in the Sun’s or Moon’s hora according to its nature, read in the D2 hora guide, delivers more reliably than one placed against its nature. And a money planet delivers in its own major or sub-period and in the periods of planets connected to it, so that a chart with a fine money planet and no period of it for forty years is a chart whose wealth is real and late; the period-by-period reading is in Which Mahadasha Brings Money?. When two planets claim the money
Most charts have two claimants: a second lord and an eleventh lord that are different planets, or a lord and an occupant. The rule is that each delivers its own house’s kind of money in its own period, the second lord what is kept and the eleventh lord what is gained, and the chart’s wealth is the sum of two careers rather than one. When the two are in connection, by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange, they form the classical Dhana yoga, treated in the Dhana yoga guide, and the money comes through both at once. When they are in the sixth, eighth or twelfth from each other, the chart earns through one and loses through the other, and the reading names which period does which. The chart with a single planet ruling both houses, which happens for Leo (Mercury rules the second and eleventh) and Aquarius (Jupiter rules the second and eleventh), has the cleanest money reading in the zodiac: one planet, one period, one answer.
A worked chart: Mercury’s money, Jupiter’s inheritance
A Taurus lagna chart, particulars altered. Mercury, lord of the second and fifth, sits in Capricorn in the ninth with Venus, lord of the lagna and sixth. Jupiter, lord of the eighth and eleventh, is exalted in Cancer in the third. The Moon, lord of the third, is in Taurus in the lagna. Saturn, lord of the ninth and tenth and the yogakaraka, sits in Libra in the sixth. The Sun, lord of the fourth, and Mars, lord of the seventh and twelfth, sit together in Aquarius in the tenth. Rahu is in Virgo in the fifth, Ketu in Pisces in the eleventh.
Apply the test. The second lord is Mercury, in the ninth with the lagna lord: what is kept comes through fortune, learning and the father, and the native’s own effort is bound to it. The eleventh lord is Jupiter, exalted, but ruling the eighth as well and sitting in the third: what is gained comes through the eighth house’s channels, inheritance and other people’s money, and through the third’s, effort and siblings. The occupants of the money houses are Ketu in the eleventh, which releases rather than gives, and nothing in the second. The evidence, taken from him at forty-one: the money years were Mercury’s. The money planet is Mercury, twice named, and the exalted dhanakaraka is not.
Mercury’s major period ran from his twenty-third year, the second lord with the lagna lord in the ninth. Mercury’s own sub-period was the first job in a trading firm and the first savings. Mercury-Venus, the lagna lord, was the commission income that became the real money, and a house bought in his thirtieth year. Mercury-Sun and Mercury-Moon, the fourth lord on the tenth and the third lord in the lagna, added the second property and a business of his own. By the end of Mercury’s period, in his fortieth year, he was, by the family’s standard, wealthy, through trade and fees, exactly Mercury’s kind of money. Ketu’s period, running now, Ketu in the eleventh, has already released some of it: an investment written off without much grief, which is Ketu’s signature. Venus’s period, from his forty-seventh year, keeps what Mercury made, the lagna lord holding the second lord’s gains. Jupiter’s turn comes only as a sub-period inside Venus’s, in his late fifties, and the reading has already said what it will bring: the eighth lord exalted delivers the eighth house’s money, an inheritance, and the eleventh lord in the third delivers gains through a sibling’s enterprise, with a loss in the middle because the eighth is also a loss. He had been told by three astrologers that Jupiter would make him rich. Jupiter will make him something, in his late fifties; Mercury made him rich at thirty-five, and nobody had looked at the second lord.
What the money planet does not tell you
It does not tell you how much, and a reading that names a figure is guessing. It does not tell you to buy, sell, borrow or invest anything; the chart reads tendency and timing, and the decisions belong to a planner and the native’s own judgment. It does not override a Daridra yoga or the denial of the sixth, eighth and twelfth, which are read in their own right in Money Problems in the Chart. It rests on the birth time, since the second and eleventh are whole signs and a lagna one sign wrong hands the money to a different planet. And it should be said to the native with a weak money planet that wealth is not the only thing the chart promises, and that the same chart usually carries something the wealthy chart lacks.
